What went wrong? He took a weak gimmick and got it over at a midcard level. He also knew when to fuck off before he got given an even shittier gimmick like other members of his family.

By 97 Bret was slowing down considerably. He went to WCW - a company his family had no real ties with - for the pay cheque.

From 1982 until 1997 he had worked to have the best cardio and workrate in pro wrestling. He had earned a big money payout. He was on I think $1.5mn with WWF in 97, which Vince said he'd no longer be able to afford. He advised Bret to go to WCW, who were offering something like $2.5mn a year. I think he was happy to take the cash and sit on the bench.

I also believe the Goldberg kick was a work. Bret has taken that same vicious looking big boot for 25 years - it was one of his go-to spots and he could sell it brilliantly. Also, he and Goldberg have worked Legend of Wrestling events together ever since. But a great way to "end your career" and get paid.

tl;dr: Bret just habitually works everyone, at all times, from multiple angles at once. He's the master of the 4D Cerebral Sharpshooter.

I listened to the podcast. Bryan proclaimed it the blackest day in the history of pro wrestling. Dave was shaken up and even more unfocused. All TV and house shows until the end of the year were cancelled. Heyman and Regal were going to run the company until Haitch and/or Steph recovered, or indefinitely, if they died. TNA, ROH and New Japan offered to send some talent to work some shows here and there and The Rock was returning to work full time until Mania for free, out of respect of the company. Brock and Goldberg were the planned Mania main event.
