It's had to explain for me properly, but you need to switch on your brain while drawing and keep it at near maximal output.
Random scribbling some lines or trial and error until it looks right doesn't work.
Try to think about why you want to put a line there, where exactly does it need to be, at what angle, with what curve, how you need to move your hand. After you draw the line, check it and think about why it looks wrong.

Not sure if I'm making sense, but basically if your brain doesn't put in the effort there won't be anything saved in your memory.

Also it's a long process so don't be discouraged when you don't notice immediate progress.
