If you want to know how to do interesting world building, play Thief, Dues Ex, System Shock 2, VTMB, that type of stuff.

Open world games ironically enough always have fucking garbage world building. Do not look to them if you want to make an interesting world.

A jungle would be interesting but unless you can make it dense and thick don't bother, otherwise it will barely look like a jungle, and optimizing an actual thick jungle might be hard. Tundra could be okay. I love deserts though. If you want an intersting desert environment, take a look at Tattooine from Star Wars, both prequels, originals and all the video game renditions of it. Never failed to have an interesting desert setting.

I was actually inspired to make a desert from re watching star wars. I love the idea of a rough world where everyone tends to themselves, and large towns like Mos Eisley. But what I'm trying to decide is how to make the desert interesting, how to add some content in between cities. Because I've played some open world games and I hated lots of the environments because there was nothing in between settlements, maybe a few trees and some animals but that's about it.

Just don't make it open world then. Or put in a travelling system that is both fast and fun, but isn't fast travel because that defeats the purpose of open world.

If you had played Stalker Shadow of Chernobyl, that has a good middle between open world and linear with this weird interconnection of mini open maps and hubs.

Hub like systems are generally the most comfy, don't be afraid to have those, and have loading zones leading to other areas, that can be open world, but maybe about the size of Far Cry 1's open world maps.

Also good taste in liking Tatooine.

don't. the game gets less fun the more you play. i'm close friends with everyone in the pro league community and none of the pros enjoy playing the game outside of practice and matches. the game will likely be dead by this time next year unless Operation Health makes some significant improvements, which is looking more unlikely with every announcement.

It's pretty good, make sure you get that version that's $23 instead of the starter edition.

You will probably get your monies worth. I enjoy it
