I really hate how I feel under pressure to do millions of things at the same time in millions of different ways. But one of those things is reading. I hate how you're told by the pseudo intellectual masses that you have to read shitloads of "classic" books and are forced to claim you found them entertaining and filled with "profound psychological and philosophical insights".

Firstly, books and reading books all the way through (in contrast with reading as a means to an end, e.g., reading a physics equation) no longer even encompass the huge majority of intellectual activity. 1000 years ago you would be known as a huge genius if you were literate, read the bible, and made up your own 5000 page segment of unfalsifiable theology where you try to work out whether god approves of lightly salted pretzels. These days we have the bullshitty, unfalsifiable philosophising strands of intellectual activity. We also have programming, mathematics, chemistry, and many other things. Stop telling me that reading books all the way through is the only way to be intelligent or do intelligent things.

Stop pretending that the huge, huge majority of books can't be summarised. I hate how "erudition" is praised and I'm threatened with exile if I don't constantly read. It's ironic how erudition is praised by people who love seeming like curmudgeons who want to live back in Ancient Greek or Roman or Medieval times "when scholars weren't so narrowly focused and could grasp the complexities of life, in contrast with out simplistic scientists and so called intellectuals these days, such as Stephen Hawking". Of course it's ironic because erudition is like aspiring to be a really fucking dumb and basic computer database. Beep boop! There are 27 moons of Saturn! Did you know Proust's third novel had 27 deaths? Did you know the Ancient Macedonians worshipped 729 types of cat-like Gods and 729 is 27^2? What's that, you want me to use the information in a non-trivial manner? I'm just a database. Boop beep!

This isn't just non-fiction, it's also fiction where the pseuds are out in full force. Fiction was most likely originally written for fun. These days, "fun" and "enjoyment" are dirty words for the pseudo-intellectuals. All the classic novels are supposedly filled with "profound psychological and philosophical insights". Novels these days are supposed to facilitate an English professor's activity of making unfalsifiable, post hoc inferences or playing spot the allusion. Even though everyone today is supposedly too stupid to know what a good novel is, every surviving novel ("which stood the test of time" supposedly) first had to survive by having some measure of popularity in its own time, where everyone had an IQ of 200.

You can't just call something boring these days and stop reading it. You have to claim that the author's understanding of Sanskrit linguistics as applied to the design of chewing gum wrappers was deficient.

you're just another pussy with no discipline

In my experience, reading a lot is overrated, though finding literature you have difficulty understanding and working hard to understand it is really useful.
Also reading at least just a single book that you can understand on a complete and deep level because you can correlate it with your own personal experience, can really further your general understanding compared to less inspired readings.

>reduction is precisely what a work of art opposes
Any theory has to be shorter than the raw data, otherwise it is useless. So without reduction there can't be understanding. If your art opposes understanding, then it's just obscurantist.

I was reading a random news story...

https://www.theguardian.com/money/2017/jul/22/student-loans-company-punishing-graduates-additional-rate-rise

>“What scares me the most in this whole process is that the SLC is so opaque that an Oxford graduate, my parents – both with Cambridge degrees – and my MP, Lucy Frazer, have been unable to get a satisfactory response from a company that thousands of young people are massively in debt to.”

Jesus, if even they can't do it, then you peons probably die of starvation because you lock yourselves in cupboards!

>B-b-b-b-b-but university doesn't matter! Even though it does! But it doesn't!

Hmmm... Well, as one final test, why don't you google the name of that MP and see which university she went to...

Get a PhD? Open a start-up and earn a lot of money? Create a big family?

Is Jordan Peterson a post-modernist?
He states that he acts as if God exists, arguing that identifying the religious sentiment as a mere made-up narrative is perfectly reasonable, and that in fact one should choose this path in pragmatical manner, for this lifestyle is apparently beneficial for most human beings.

Now, although his prescriptive statements are conservative, his epistemological framework is both nihilist and postmodernist. Not only Peterson is aware of what narratives actually are, but he also factors in phisiological factors such mental health, how balanced lifestyle actually is and so on. This is an extremely cynic and nihilist viewpoint on discourse and humanity at large, which overcoming is still motivated by inherently egoistic reasons, based on benefits and life improvements.

So... is he actually a postmodernist?

He's just not prepared to throw out the Bible like many scholars are today. He simply thinks it's worth reading and analyzing because, with something that's been edited for so long, it can't all be wrong. If it makes him post modernist to admit that it's reasonable to question the existence of god, then we're probably all post modernists.

the fact that this book of "poetry" is a best seller is proof that poetry is dead.

I honestly prefer prose poetry but so many people just post the first paragraphs of a failed novel and call that a prose poem its insane
>>
>>9821792
I used to hate this book because everyone in freshman lit read it. I read the other week, it's bad, but not in the same way I thought. If I were to do a book of poetry it would be similar, just some brief flashes of inspiration but never fully work through the compositions. I felt a lot of sympathy for this book because of that fact, that I felt that I would have produced the same book.

(Some of it is pretty comfy if still a bit cringy)
>>
>>9821792
People don't care about poetry anymore. They just want 5 lines that really makes you think for 10 seconds.

Writing while drunk: yay or nay? I never tried it.
34 posts and 2 images submitted.
>>
Not as fun as it sounds, honestly just about any substance just gets in the way if you're really into your work. Don't rely on them.
>>
>>9821655
Fully drunk? You'll write nothing of merit. If your brain is having a hard time making your mouth work properly, then the higher-reasoning and motor control you need to write is pretty much fucked.
Although have been tipsy and come up with some good pieces. The difference there being that I wasn't really drunk. I had casually had a few pints over the course of an evening. Even then it all need some serious editing the next morning.
Alcohol, in moderate amounts, can be good for quelling your inhibitions so that you just sit down and write, but it shouldn't be a crutch or a necessity for your writing.
>>
>>9821655
It starts to read an awfully lot like a 15 year old retard wrote it if you write while drunk. Nothing but shit. You do not think nearly as much as you should do on what you're writing, and you write needlessly vulgar things you wouldn't of written whilst sober.
