Why none of you guys ever told me that Raymond Chandler was a great poet?

>“He looked about as inconspicuous as a tarantula on a slice of angel food.”

>“She smelled the way the Taj Mahal looks by moonlight.”

>"I was as hollow and empty as the spaces between the stars."

>"The white moonlight was cold and clear, like the justice we dream of but don't find."

>"He had a face like a collapsed lung."

>“I needed a drink, I needed a lot of life insurance, I needed a vacation, I needed a home in the country. What I had was a coat, a hat and a gun. I put them on and went out of the room.”

>"I belonged in Idle Valley like a pearl onion on a banana split."

>“From 30 feet away she looked like a lot of class. From 10 feet away she looked like something made up to be seen from 30 feet away.”

>“The streets were dark with something more than night.”

>“The girl slept on, motionless, in that curled-up looseness achieved by some women and all cats.”

>"She's a charming middle age lady with a face like a bucket of mud... "

>“Dead men are heavier than broken hearts.”

>“She gave me a smile I could feel in my hip pocket.”

>"To say she had a face that would stopped a clock would have been to insult her. It would have stopped a runaway horse."

>“I’m an occasional drinker, the kind of guy who goes out for a beer and wakes up in Singapore with a full beard.”
>“Some days I feel like playing it smooth. Some days I feel like playing it like a waffle iron.”

>“He had a battered face that looked as if it had been hit by everything but the bucket of a dragline.”

>“Alcohol is like love. The first kiss is magic, the second is intimate, the third is routine. After that you take the girl’s clothes off.”

>“It was a blonde. A blonde to make a bishop kick a hole in a stained-glass window.”

>“When in doubt, have a man come through the door with a gun in his hand.”

>“A city [Los Angeles] with all the personality of a paper cup.”

>“I felt like an amputated leg.”

>“On the dance floor half a dozen couples were throwing themselves around with the reckless abandon of a night watchman with arthritis.”

>“His smile was as stiff as a frozen fish.”

>“Please don’t get up,’ she said in a voice like the stuff they use to line summer clouds with.”

>“The detective must be a complete man and a common man and yet an unusual man.”

>“She was as cute as a washtub.”

>“The kid’s face had as much expression as a cut of round steak and was about the same color.”

>“The voice got as cool as a cafeteria dinner.”

>“I was neat, clean, shaved and sober, and I didn’t care who knew it.”

>“The corridor which led to it had a smell of old carpet and furniture oil and the drab anonymity of a thousand shabby lives.”

>"There was a desert wind blowing that night. It was one of those hot dry Santa Anas that come down through the mountain passes and curl your hair and make your nerves jump and your skin itch. On nights like that every booze party ends in a fight. Meek little wives feel the edge of the carving knife and study their husbands' necks. Anything can happen. You can even get a full glass of beer at a cocktail lounge."

I was ignorant of his work. I am very pleased to have discovered that he was a natural poet. He really had a gift for linguistic fireworks.

What are your personal favorite novels with existential themes? I'm looking for depressing stuff.

Could get some input on this please?

Oh column cut like gear-
shaft stuck to roof and ground--

how you did turn the earth
and moon, and were you wound

by hands to track and keep
place your timeless shadow.

True to test you stand, in
rest--your shade by your side.

Today, vines small and thin
twist round stone and quiet.

Grass, trees, violets, and weeds
sit within you shadow

as sunlight beams to you:
Monarchs oscillate the grove--

Luna's coop in granite groove.

You, in my eyes, perfect
as is. A monolith

telling time to none which
care. And should this soft woods

be dozed, and grasses razed,
for pages stained in lampblack

that ignite the glories
of this old column's past--

these eyes would not read them.
For green round chipping stone

is all I've ever known
you to be; not of then--

Oh pillar of man, pinned
forever to the land,

stand always!, left as is.

Look you are not being very fair here. Our brains work mainly subconsciously, only about three per cent of our thought is even concious. Can a man ever be honest if man doesn't even know his own mind's dephts. Helpless poor souls we are struggling against this monster of our mind. Neuron activity is over 50% subconscious, only 3 % concious. Even think of being 'honest' with that. Son of a bitch!.. i just realised.. Seemingly unnoticed my brain's subconscious was actually a monster asking for tree fifty...just read the first letters of each sentence.

>I'm gargamel, they're my animals
>one of them falls off the slide

"So hey like what's your story man?" - the quote popped to my mind.

Is this book gonna haunt me like this forever? I should reread it someday.

What is /lit/'s opinion on The Witcher series?
I am almost done with them (I finished the 2 short story novels and the main 5 novels) but I haven't read Season of Storms yet.

I liked the characters and their dialogue, but the books felt really uninspired and generic in places. The stories weren't exactly masterpieces either.

I read Last Wish and am about to finish Sword of Destiny. Bretty good so far, compelling characters and good dialogue, like you said, but not too narratively compelling (there are exceptions where everything comes together). Often seems like the word is an homage to fantasy rather than a fantasy world itself. I probably won't go on to read the novels.

The reason I bothered was because I liked the game Witcher 3 so much and wanted more of the characters, but maybe that was only so impressive because it was a video game, and video games tend to have laughably shitty writing and characterization.
>>
>>9910377
I am looking forward to playing them. I wanted to read the books first though. Is the dialogue on par with the books?
>>
>>9910391
It is, although because of the nature of the beast they can't indulge in the dialogue at quite the length they do in the books. There's still plenty of it, and the most interesting difference is that you have a hand in how it and the stories in general proceed, depending on your dialogue decisions (which are woven into the game much better than in, say, Mass Effect or Fallout). One thing I really like is that Geralt is not a blank canvas and you cannot do whatever you want, so all choices are within a certain range determined by his established personality/character -- and sometimes he will just react without 'consulting' you -- which makes for a unique RPG experience.

The funny thing is I got this book when I was in like first grade, so I've known about Infinite Jest and David Foster Wallace almost my entire life. I remember noticing it in bookstores when I was very young and thinking "Hey, it's that book."

Rothfuss just finish the trilogy. We all know it's going to be a disappointing over hyped mess without any actual conclusion. Just be done with it, we can't have two fat, bearded fucks with overhyped, unfinished fantasy series.

I would like to become a better writer. English has never been my strongest subject. Sure, I can write research papers and I've earned top marks in my required English courses my freshman year in college; however, I want to practice and learn how to write powerful and meaningful things. I want to be able to convey my ideas and thoughts as if they were a work of art. I don't know, there were times when I've read other people's shit and it was just euphoric and thought-provoking and I want to be able to do that too. I was hoping you lads would be able to share some tips/advice/etc. I-I hope this is the right board for this.
