I've become interested in 'studying' chess. As a child I never liked the game, my father would always beat me. This past semester I started playing online often. Tactics training, games on lichess, youtube videos. My college does not have a chess club but I tried to play with as many people as I could. Online ratings rose, undefeated in person.

After dinner one day I asked my father if he wanted to play. He still won easily. To my knowledge, my father never plays. He devotes no energy or thought to the game, mentioning as we started that he hadn't taken out the board in at least a year.

Not to say that I reached the level of some grandmaster or even that of a good amateur but I was almost stunned to be beaten. Sore for a day or two, then I began to wonder whether my father is meant to be a chess player.

It is attractive to believe that certain people are meant to be do a few things above all else. I see this with athletes especially, beautiful because they seem to be doing what they exist to do. I don't know.
By the back door, leading out to the yard we always had a small wooden folding table. The kind with scaffolded legs that form two opposing triangles when it stands. It was only ever used when one of my fathers friends would visit, once or twice a year. The table would be set in roughly the middle of the yard, along with two folding chairs. All afternoon they'd play chess. After dinner the board would still be on the table but their chairs faced away. Talking and drinking, in the morning the chess pieces would still be out in the yard waiting to be brought in.

Ah, hello Anon. I see your mind is not so dulled by the cyborg hybridization as the market lapses into the spheres of influences. Does my knowledge of the direction of this age un nerve you? Oh yes, have you read my works? Merely a warning of sorts, not meant to fall in the hands of those who are seduced by machinic singularities. The alt right? Merely pawns that only accelerate us to the inevitable reckoning of organic life, aided by there not much different leftist counter parts.
What is to be done Anon?

What's your opinion on Mark Helprin?
I have read A soldier of the great war and Winter's Tale, and both are great.
Infact A Soldier of the Great War is one of the best book I have ever read, very mesmerizing.

He's good. An aunt gave me an exceptionally frightening children's book by him when i was a kid and I wound up reading Winter's Tale in my teens. Remember enjoying but will have to reread it before presuming to comment.

Hey /lit/, I will be applying to uni as a classics major soon, and would like to read several books before then. However, I want to know where to begin from an academic standpoint; I already read light literature for leisure. I am somewhat competent in Latin and novice at Greek, but I would like to postpone the Roman and Greek literature until I am fully capable of reading it in their respective languages. Therein lies my issue: I cannot start with the Greeks! So, if I want to begin reading more major works, but I still want to be able to understand the context, where should I look? English literature? History? Or should I just swallow my pride and read Greek literature in English?

Better become good at Greek pretty soon cause I got bad news. You're going to take an intro to classical Greek mythology class your first year and you will be reading the Greeks in English
>>
You won't be able to easily read Homer (or Demosthenes, or any plays) in the original for at least 2 years of intensive study. You may be able to handle Xenophon or Thucydides after a year, but don't count on it. Reading in original is good, and it certainly helps your understanding, but it's far too much effort to translate anything more than a few chapters at a time. Swallow your pride and read in translation.

At 21, I'm still a dilettante. I study a degree I don't really care about, neither intellectualy nor professionally. I have the feeling that writing is pretty much the only thing I'm actually somewhat good at. Literature has been my main leisure for years, but I have never committed to it. I've never finished a story or poem. I guess reading and maybe writing would continue to be fields of interest even after finishing my studies and finding an unrelated job, but now I really feel like making them my main ocupation and see if can something be made out of it.
I'm considering fleeing from my largely unemployed region to a prosperous country, getting an unqualified job such as kitchen porter and spending all my free time in reading and writing.
Has anyone here ever done something similar? Even if not, all advice is welcome.

Unoriginal. Try a different path other than becoming a poor starving artist. I'm getting a degree that will earn money and a comfortable life so I can do the things I want. I'm not gonna get all sentimental about "mah artistt drive" after reading too many stories.

jk, I'm also 21 and give 0 fuks about my field of study. I may run
>>
>>9915847
I'm considering the poor artist way because it's not like I can choose. My degree is practically useless, I'll struggle to have a decent living in my country only after another couple of years of studying. Useless effort breeds melancholy. I can't trust my degree to give me the adequate pillow for my future literary work and joy. t's not guaranteed that I still have the same dispisition torwards writing after two or three years, so I see the starving artist way as a form of helping these aptitudes and inclinations root. Might be pledging to work as a civil servant and hooked on coke in five years.

Ok Ive been looking for a decent creepy audio book what has a sort of "house of leaves feel" and the audio version of I have no mouth I must scream was perfect.

The voice was cool and creepy and it had a weird background sound effect.

what should I listen to next ?

Also thinking of doing 1.5g of shrooms and listening to one.

Short story about Mom's death in June 2017
I want to be a great writer so please tear it up or say something bad.
This has ~ 300 words, I want to end up with >3000.

SILENCE, MORTAL BEINGS ---
VAIN GRANDEURS, SILENCE ---

Her death was surreal. the three of us watched it. It still does not make sense. Maybe it made sense to the nurse: Just another night shift in palliative care. I could say this: what I saw was paranormal. But life after death, NO. The family with their prayers. Everybody adhering to "Destination: Heaven." Well fuck a God that creates us to worship him. God is too human. I filed faith away as myth long, long ago.

When they took the tube out, she flinched. I felt her annoyance somewhere deep inside myself. She tensed as if to puke. Her nose wrinkled and she grimaced. The most active I had seen her all day. I know we all leaned in and braced ourselves. Was she hurting or was that an involuntary response? Could she feel that annoyance? Probably just us.

They tell you all kinds of things to make you feel better like the meds are strong enough. She's comfortable. Someone even said that this bag here -- this is the drug that Michael Jackson couldn't get enough of. I am numb, I am crying, I have been both for hours now.

One cannot know. How can you know? If they say they do they will lie to you with fear and love behind their eyes.

Mom swallowed hard. The nurse lifted her head and rearranged the pillows. For a moment, mom's eyes opened. I had wished for this for hours. She looked right at me. I was still and I remember saying "Ma?" and searching for hope of maybe saying goodbye, or hello, or anything. Her eyes. She wasn't looking at me. Wasn't looking through me. She was in a coma and liver failure. There was nothing behind those eyes. Her eyes opened unnaturally and all that shone back at me was an abyss. Blackness. Void.

Her blood was poisoned. Her brain was awash in toxins. The inevitability had arrived. We were numb. We understood the abstract nature of "passing." Here was that abstraction. Blurry and staticy, with some blind spots. Speak, memory. Tell me again what happened.

Are Death In Venice and The Magic Mountain Mann's worthwhile reads?
7 posts and 1 images submitted.
>>

the magic mountain is an admittedly boring and dry 5/10 until the ending, and then it becomes an 8/10

The Magic Mountain is probably the greatest bildungsroman of all time.
>>
>>9914927
entry level Mann; Stories (Death in Venice etc.) -> Buddenbrooks
advanced: Magic Mountain -> Joseph and his Brothers
endlevel: Dr. Faustus

go this order - thank me l8er
Mann imo is the best prose stylist to ever do it and all the listed works are masterpieces (admittetly I read them in german, don't know about translation, I'd imagine it's pretty hard tho)

Just finished this last night
Am I missing something? The whole thing read like one long philosophical essay disguised as a story, or more specifically a series of philosophical essays loosely connected with a story. They were all concepts I was already very much familiar with, so I don't really feel like I gained anything of value from reading it.
Am I too smart or too stupid to understand this book?

Hey everyone, not sure if this is posted in the right board, so let me know if there's a more appropriate board! Anyway, a friend of mine is looking for translated versions of a trilogy by Agnes Henningsen, but so far she's only been able to find them in Danish. These are the books she's looking for:

• Kaerlighedens Aarstider (Seasons of Love)
• Det rige Efteraar (Luxuriant Autumn)
• Den sidste Aften (The Last Evening)

Do any of you all know any websites where she can find these books translated into English (or Spanish, she's fluent in both)? She's okay with either digital or paperback versions that she can purchase.
Thanks in advance!

No but I have a really good youtube playlist that will make you good.

I will give this to you in exchange for advice.

I also like chess but it is hard for me to play because when I lose or when my plans are intercepted I rage very hard. How do I accept not being able to completely control the external world
>>
>>9914800

Yeah, here's a tip. Examine your opponent before you go up against them. Are they capable? Are they cowardly? Are they determined? What kind of moves will they make? Will they remain unpredictable? Is there any way you can get an edge over them? Do they have any weakness you can exploit during the course of the game?

Just don't get into a game you don't know you can win. And for fucks sake, if you're losing hard, save yourself the embarrassment and just Sue for peace. I mean, offer a tie or something. You'll probably be less mad in the long run.
>>
>>9914809

>Examine your opponent

I only play the computer because otherwise I worry about taking too long with my moves and the shame of losing to another person
