One non-fiction, and a novel. Seems a good combo. Just purchased them from amazon, thanks friend.
Feel free to use this thread to discuss him if anyone wants, I just wanted to order two books by him before I went to bed, which I will now do.
I've encountered two Hindu monks at my university that belong to a particular sect of Hinduism, and between the two of them I've gotten a translation of the Bhagavad Gita translated by their leader A.C. Bhaktivedanta, as well as some other books by him. I also had to donate money to their organization.
I haven't dived into any of the books, but I'm wondering, has anyone else encountered these monks? Have you read the books by their leader? Is this a respected sect of Hinduism or is it some sort of weird cult thing?

if someone explained what's wrong with reading for story i would be very grateful.
countless times people called me pleb but never explained why story shouldn't be reason to read a book
There's nothing /wrong/ with reading for the story, it's just not patrician.
Compare a comfy McChicken Sandwich in terms of sating-your-hunger value to having a multiple course fine dining meal.
It's the whole experience of the thing. If you read (or eat) solely for basic entertainment (trashy no effort nutrition), then fine, judge the best pulp (fast food?) based on story.
Most people (/lit/erati?) pretend to be more discerning in taste.
what if I read for the characters? Is that less pleb?
Because the entire story of any book can be described in 1 minute. It's absolutely minuscule, information-wise, compared to every other part of a book.
Do you realise that Alice Liddell is about to celebrate her birthday number 165? Say something nice to her.

I see these Japanese authors pop up a lot. Who are we missing out on, in your experience? Any authors (East Asian in general) that don't show up frequently?
>>9456279
matsuo basho, chikamatsu monzaemon, ikkyu, chuya nakahara, kenji nakagami
read some major chinese classics in several translations each. i ching, classic of history, analects, and the tao te ching to begin with. they make all subsequent readings of east asian art infinitely richer - it's like reading the iliad, some plato/aristotle, and critical selections from the bible for a student of western art.
if anyone can recommend some good modern histories of the warring states period I'd be extremely happy
The japs never produced any lit worth reading.
But if you wanna waste time don't forget Ranpo and the other Murakami.
Best music theory books? Let's make a chart. We are better than /mu/ at their own game.

Reading this was like eating horseshit. Do americans really consider it a good book or have I been meme'd?

Kek.
I always think it's good, but would be way better if they cut some of the bullshit out of it, like toole's agent recommended, which sent him into a suicidal spiral.
Hey,
we talked to each other on Discord (in german) for a while about our shortstories and other stuff after you had posted one of yours on here. I can't access my account anymore, used a throwaway mail for it.
If you read this, reply to the thread please

What was the /lit/ discord again?
Best English translation of pic related?
I just finished Karamazov and loved the Pevear and Volokhonsky translation, but I can't seem to find any Nabokov done by them.
nabokov's own translation, but it isnt as good as original
>>9456146
Oh, I was told always to avoid Nabokov's translations since he tried for literalism over readability or poeticality... I don't know, maybe I'll just go for the Constance Garnett one since it's cheap and in the public domain.

Why is it so hard for some people to understand her philosophy?
or why are abstract concepts like individualism and egoism so hard to understand?
i mean come on, being egoist =/= being an asshole, this isn't 4th Grade guys
>>9456123
was rand autisitic?
>>9456123
In the abstract, being an egoist =/= being an asshole, but Rand's """egoism""" (as elaborated by her throughout her life) is a long way away from the less ideological and more pure egoism you're thinking of. There's a reason people shit on objectivism and Rand without criticizing stirner or nietzsche
>My philosophy, in essence, is the concept of man as a heroic being, with his own happiness as the moral purpose of his life, with productive achievement as his noblest activity, and reason as his only absolute.
What would he reads if he was alive today?
He'd probably be too busy being tested to discover how he lived so long to read much.
>>9456063
He liked Dostoievsky. Even said that Dostoievsky gave him more than Gauss.
i think he reads mystic poetry being alive today
We know that most of philosophy boils down to 'just b urself'.
But is there philosophy that advices against beeing yourself?
>We know that most of philosophy boils down to 'just b urself'.
the fuck
>>9456041
Surely most philosophy says you should actively try to change yourself in some way. You could argue that even the stuff that really does say 'just be yourself' ends up doing it.
>>9456136
Even the change is encouraged, it's still constrained within the naturalistic limits of 'what ought to be'. For example, Aristotle wants you to change to fit your natural mold, be that of a ruler or a farmer.
