I see these Japanese authors pop up a lot. Who are we missing out on, in your experience? Any authors (East Asian in general) that don't show up frequently?

matsuo basho, chikamatsu monzaemon, ikkyu, chuya nakahara, kenji nakagami
read some major chinese classics in several translations each. i ching, classic of history, analects, and the tao te ching to begin with. they make all subsequent readings of east asian art infinitely richer - it's like reading the iliad, some plato/aristotle, and critical selections from the bible for a student of western art.
if anyone can recommend some good modern histories of the warring states period I'd be extremely happy
The japs never produced any lit worth reading.
But if you wanna waste time don't forget Ranpo and the other Murakami.

You gaudy, tasteless fucking faggot
Masako BandÅ. She's cited as the main influence for Silent Hill's atmosphere in a Japanese-only booklet for one of the games. Only one of her books is currently in English, and that's Mandala Road. Oh, and despite the relation to a video game her writing is very, very good.
