Why are the Sun, the Moon and the Earth often called Sol, Luna and Terra in English-language sci-fi? I know these are their Latin names, but why use them instead of English ones? Also, some English speakers for some reason think these are their 'official names'. Official where? There's no Solar System Inc.

Sol and Luna sound better than the Moon or the Sun, especially in sci-fi settings where people live around different suns or moons

just finished Invisible Cities. First Calvino I have read, one of the prettiest books I've read. It's hard for me to describe what I learned from it beyond how pretty it is, but I just keep thinking about it. What did you think of it? What other books are like it?
18 posts and 1 images submitted.
>>
>>9465252
Start thinking about it instead of making retarded threads. Or share your thoughts beyond 'it's pretty'. Do you need us to tell you what to think?
>>
>>9465252

More or less the same impression than you had! I would suggest you also read the trilogy I Nostri Antenati (Il Barone Rampante, il Visconte Dimezzato, Il Cavaliere Inesistente) - those are also very nice. If you liked the imagery, these are possibly less 'meta' than some of his other books.

If you are interestend in Calvino 'meta-literary' stuff, go for Il Castello dei Destini Incrociati or Se una Notte d'Inverno un Viaggiatore.

Also, le Cosmicomiche if you are interested in his short stories!
>>
>>9465262

He asked what other people think about it and asked for suggestions. Why would the point of the thread be his own opinion? This is /lit/ and you can't read three lines of 'retarted' threads without misinterpreting you inbred mongoloid

Do you count plays as literature or something else entirely? In terms of authorship is it fair to pit Shakespeare up against Joyce or Dostoevsky?
19 posts and 1 images submitted.

Fairness has nothing to do with it but yes it is retarded to pit any writer against another, literature is not a competition.

I plan on going into literature and philosophy for a degree, and I have not read, nor do I plan on reading the bible before hand. If a book can't make it's point without referring to the "waaah please let there be something else after I die" "waaaah I'm a moral person even though I'm just being good because I'm afraid of punishment" then it's probably not a very good book to begin with, unless it's God Is Not Great by Christopher Hitches.

Sola Scriptura is the ideological basis for modern relativism, as well as the rejection of an absolute truth.

Sola Scriptura is also responsible for the dissolution of unity in western europe and has permanently crippled worldwide Christian unity. It is responsible, ideologically, for both democracy and individuality -- both of which bring endless plagues to modern society and is creating generations of degenerates.

I claim, unironically, that the Protestant Reformation is the worst thing to happen in all of Human History due to the untold number of generations it will bring harm to through the philosophies (Both religious and atheistic) that find their roots in it.
