Why are the Sun, the Moon and the Earth often called Sol, Luna and Terra in English-language sci-fi? I know these are their Latin names, but why use them instead of English ones? Also, some English speakers for some reason think these are their 'official names'. Official where? There's no Solar System Inc.

Sol and Luna sound better than the Moon or the Sun, especially in sci-fi settings where people live around different suns or moons
Old maps and scientific classifications both tend to name things with Latin/Greek names, because the scholarly community still used Latin as a lingua franca until very recently in Western history, and universally KNEW Latin and liked to show it off until even more recently. Most of the features on other planets and celestial bodies are named after things from Classical Antiquity.
One of the reasons might just be because it allows them to have proper names, without articles ("The"). It's weird to think "the moon" or "the sun" when many planets have many moons, and our sun is just one star of many. You look for the moon's or sun's "real" proper name, and the closest thing you find is in Latin, which also conveniently provides a consistent scheme: Luna, Sol, Terra.
Probably a confluence of factors that just led to it becoming convention.

Moon sounds better it is asoft monosyllable
So why does nobody use Helios/Selene? Gaia and Terra are pretty trite, Earth is a single unique concept unlike a Sun or Moon

Well, when you're dealing with more than one sun or moon a way to specify that you mean the one that orbits Earth or the one Earth orbits(other than just Significant Capital Letters) is handy.
Solar and Lunar are already used as descriptors for most things relating to the Sun or Moon, so it's a very easy jump.
As for Terra, Earth works fine for anything dealing with the planet, but when you're dealing with something originating FROM the planet what adjective are you going to use?
>Earthen
That already means something else.
>Earthly
Better.
>Earthish
Now you're just being silly.
Terran just tends to be easier though.
