Which translation is superior? Scott Moncrieff? Kilmartin? Lydia Davis's "Swann's Way"?

Obviously Moncrieff.

That depends, if you're reading it in parallel to the French version, I would recommend that you use the Lydia Davis's translation for she sticks very closely to the original. If that's not the case, then definitely go for Moncrieff http://www.newyorker.com/books/page-turner/how-a-flawed-version-of-proust-became-a-classic-in-english

So far I've read pic related, Mindfulness in Plain English, and Eknath Easwaran's translation of the Dhammapada. They're a very good intro to Buddhism taken as a whole, and I'd like to know where to go next (specifically with meditation and philosophy).

What do you recommend, /lit/?

just practice meditation and memorize a nice sutra or something. the deeper you go into buddhist/vedic/far eastern philosophy the worse it gets.

There seems to be a lot of nonsense typical with religions lasting a long time, but the Buddha's core insights are very useful, and the vast majority of it has an element of explicit wisdom through experience. For example, his methods for handling anxiety or worry are very effective.

>>9465469
Is there a useful book for different styles of meditation out there? How about one for the spread of Buddhism throughout Asia?

Hello, /lit/

Recently I've noticed an influx of threads filled with anons claiming to be sad, claiming to have no direction in life, claiming that they've had a raw deal, claiming this and that and the world has brought woe upon them. Here, in this thread, with my best prose, I will put a stop to this nonsense, if you choose to read it. Refute my points if you can, I encourage you to try. I will use God in my arguments, but not in a traditional Christian sense. God here will represent nature.

I shall restore you to good relations with God, who is best to the best of men. For it is not Nature's way to let good ever do harm to good; between good man and God exists a friendship sealed by virtue. Although, it is more than a friendship. No, rather it is a bond of relationship and similarity, since undoubtedly a good man differs from God only in the sphere of time; he is God's pupil and imitator, his true offspring to whom that illustrious parent, no gentle trainer in virtue, rears with severity, as strict fathers do.
And so, when you see good men of whom God approves toiling and sweating, with a steep road to climb, and bad men, on the other hand, enjoying themselves, surrounded by pleasures, consider that our sons please us by their self-control, while our fools please us by their free-spirit, that we restrain the former by tighter discipline, and nurture the latter's boldness of manner. It is no different with God, let me assure you: he does not pamper a good man like a favorite fool; he puts him to the test, hardens him, and makes him ready for service.

>between good man and God exists a friendship sealed by virtue.

Nice prose OP, but citation needed. Your observations rely on estimating and placing value in virtuous men who are virtuous by their acts. But you do not strictly define virtue. Perhaps the bad man, the lazy man, the frivolous man is merely on his own path to God?
>>
Now, some of you may ask:

"Why do many reversals of fortune happen to good men?"

To this I answer: Nothing bad CAN happen to a good man: opposites do not mix. Just as the vast number of rivers, all the rain that falls in showers from above, and the massive volume of mineral springs do not alter the taste of the sea, do not even moderate it, so adversity's onslaughts are powerless to affect the spirit of a brave man: it remains unshaken and makes all evens assume its own color; for it is stronger than all external forces. I do not mean that he is insensible to those forces but that he conquers them, and as a man who in all else is calm and tranquil of mind he rises to face whatever attacks him. All adversity he regards as a training exercise. Who, provided he is a man and intent on what is right, will shirk reasonable toil or show reluctance to face duties involving danger? What man of energy does not find inactivity to be a punishment?

Is this pic a meme, or will it give me a good starting point?

What isn't a meme is reading a book.
SO, if you want to start somewhere, go read a fucking book, instead posting about reading a book on the internet.

>Is this pic a meme

Don't ever seriously use that phrase again. People will assume you're developmentally stunted.
>>
of course it will give you a good starting point, it's enough to just look at the books to understand that

Can I get some recs for books about S&M or more specifically why and how girls enjoy being degraded etc?

My girlfriend insisted we play this game where she writes out two identical lists of fetishes and then we each ticked boxes on our lists as to what we'd like to do to the other person and have done to ourselves. Turns out my gf really wants to try a whole bunch of stuff.

I can post the list if necessary but really I'm looking for books about this sort of thing that'll give me some tips or like show me how to do it in a hot way.

Thanks!

Hmm, well I'll type out what's written on it. She told me it was just a game that she'd read about online and it was just fun etc. Bear in mind she ticked almost ever single one:

>Choking
>Slapping
>Forced / Abduction Fantasy
>Rimming (Give)
>Water sports
>MFF
>DDLG (not sure what this one meant so I left blank)
>Anal
>Throatfucking
>Puke
>Bondage (Rope)
>Dollification
>Spitting
>MFF Bullying
>Pegging (Giving)
>Double Penetration

One she didn't tick were

>Blood Play
>MMF
>Cheating

I ticked like five things but she ticked almost everything. I mean I didn't really expect it, even though she made the list. I figured she wanted to test if I was a pervert or something.

Why is it we Start with the Greeks? I feel for those of us in the Anglosphere, starting with the Greeks is not a bad place to start, but certainly not the best.

Why aren't we starting with the KJV, the common book of prayer, Shakespeare, Milton, etc? These books make up a greater portion of common parlance than the Greeks ever will, and it kicks you off right into more modern and popular stuff like Jane Austen. And when returning to Greek material it could be done initially through Chapman or Pope.

The NT was written in Greek, Shakespeare alludes to the Greeks and miltons paradife loft owes more to homer than the bible.
The Greeks are the foundation of almost all western art.
You can start where you want but lots will go over your head if you don't have a basic understanding of the major Greek myths and philosophy.

all roads lead to Greece. It's true anon, I used to laugh at the Greek meme but it is too damn true. But you're also right about the Bible. Not having read the Bible is a criminal offense if you're a wannabe scholar/intellect/blahblahblah

Religious Texts.jpg

I've never seen a good chart for sacred texts aside from Christian stuff. So I've made one myself, the top editions are mostly the ones I own myself and are all by qualified academics in their respective fields. I haven't read all of the bottom versions, but I researched the translators of each to check they're reasonably qualified, and they were mainly chosen for being easier to get hold of or cheaper (hence the Penguin Classics).

Hopefully you guys find this useful, I learned a fair bit about the wealth (or sometimes dearth) of English translations of various religious texts. I stuck to extant religions so it didn't become massive. Some religions like Baha'i would deserve to get in but they either don't have clearly defined texts or there aren't translations.

So the kid is 14.
I have taken a very keen interest in his education, mostly related to literature & history.
At school he does well in all subjects.
He has a bunch of buddies to fuvk around & play Overwatch with, and we also take him & friends for hikes and camping trips.
A well rounded kid.
Recently he asked me to read Walden with him (we still read together in the evenings), and now he is hoping to take Latin for highschool... Which is not offered at the school, we'll have to work something out.
As his own preferences begin to show a more educated bent & aspiration, I have to say, there is something quite gratifying.

So, do I win /lit/?

The Stoner
I went outside, to smoke a joint, and a blue bird fell from a tree.
I looked it over, it was dead, could it be from me?
I'm no biologist, and I was stoned, but I could still believe,
That this bird had choked to death, on my smoking weed.
Had it been my fault, had I done wrong?
Could my burning plant leaves cause this second-hand harm?
I buried the bird, in a box, once I was sure it had died.
From that day forth, I swore on Blue, I'd only smoke inside.
The Philosopher
The next day, I came to find, a very sour sight.
Two baby Blues, in their nest, alone and filled with fright.
I went to my shrink, for time to think, about the value of a life.
We got high, and he talked about, knowing what's wrong from right.
I took that cue, to think of Blue, and do what Jefferson taught.
The right to life, we all do have, it's why our forefathers fought.
I went back home, fed the birds, and inside they were brought.
I went to sleep, having done right, I was happy at that thought
The Darkness
Bright sun shone, through the window, as I awoke.
I grabbed my bong, packed a bowl, and blew out lots of smoke.
I turned my head, to the nest, and witnessed the cruelest joke.
Stiff as stone, in a smoky room, both the Blues had croaked.
I was distraught, at the thought, that the blame was solely mine.
I'd killed three birds, three innocent birds, in only a day's time.
I chose from that day forth, to rescind any a care,
Some lives are short, some lives are long, it's fucked, but also fair.

Was he the most respectable, least fedora-ish of the New Atheists? I thought Mortality had some genuinely affecting stuff in it, and he at least had a wide range of interests beyond just repeating "religion is bad" like Dawkins.

Yes. He is the beginning and the end of new atheism for all it's worth. Anything after him is just tip top nonsense
>>
>>9461780
They're all respectable in their narrow fields. Dawkins is a highly venerated evolutionary biologist, Hitchens is a very good political essayist and one of the best public speakers in recent history, and Harris has my respect for not dismissing the concept of spirituality entirely in his critiques of religion.
