Hey guys, I mostly hang around /fit/, and this is my first time posting. I recently got a new laptop for school, an asus zenbook, and I was wondering if I should opt for gnu/linux instead of windows. So what are some advantages gnu/linux has over windows 10 for a casual user? should I just stick to windows?
Windows is a botnet
https://www.gnu.org/proprietary/malware-microsoft.en.html
Solution? Install Gentoo
https://www.gentoo.org
>>59162987
Yes, go with Arch, that will surely /fit/ your needs for school and private life.
Don't come back
Why don't they just use the entire wafer for a 2000 core CPU?
Slap a heatsink on the back, make a socket that fits and call it good.

because Muiple chip modules were used for some time but they never gaind sufficient interest.
maybe it'll change with silicon interposers
Like >>59162996 said, 1/2 that wafer probably has imperfections that need to be lasered off anyway.
Daily reminder that your 8-core CPU is utterly useless on anything below ~80% pure parallelization, for example not using at all the computer at the time and waiting for something to encode or render.
It's not even something that will improve over time. CPUs are by definition serial machines. They will always require that speed on any interactive application.
This is because however you beg game or desktop programmers to give you 100% parallelization during interactivity they will never do it because of mutexes.

>AMDahl's Law
moar cores moar cores
Yeah, because everyone uses only one program at a time.
Windows alone has like 30+ system processes running at all times. Saving applications from having to share with these processes means those applications can run faster in theory. Plus speedstep/coolnquiet throttles down cores that aren't being fully utilized and turbo overclocks ones that are.

I'm legitimately sad about windows phone. I would have loved the continuity features and having such a deep rooted ecosystem from a company other than apple, but apparently ms has no faith in its own products

Hey /g/
First time poster here and also incidentally a bit of tech noob.
Recently a friend of mine helped me build a PC (specs are in the picture) and I've been very satisfied with it. Thinking future upgrades I have considered buying a second SSD to use as storage for some of the programmes I use more often.
Now
I'm a noob.
So I honestly would not even know if it would help that much or even be worth it. I know that SSD's have a superior read/write speed, but I would like a second opinion on this.
just get one larger SSD and a mechanical for storage of media/etc you dumbass
>>59162131
But is it worth it? The price of a "larger" SSD is still fairly high, at least where I live, so perhaps having a second one would be the cheaper option.
>>59162116
I have used two 120 GB SSDs in RAID 0 since 2011, with several Terabytes of HDDs for storage. Zero issues. Just ensure you image a backup of your RAID Array every so often.
Hey /g/uys
I'm having a bit of a debate with myself, and I think I'll need some advice from the bunch of you, unfortunately.
Today, I finally gave in to my curiosity, and downloaded Vivaldi. I was just really eager to find out what this thing is all about, since it seems to be a very controversial subject here. Some of you seem to like it, and some of really hate it.
And now I don't know how I should feel about this. Don't get me wrong, I very much like how this looks and feels, and it's really fun to use. I'm having a good time using this browser. But there are some things that kinda bug me.
First off, it's proprietary, and that goes right agains my values.
Then, it's based on Chromium, and I really don't want to support a mono-engine web. I remember what it was like when that last happened, and I'd like to avoid such a situation in the future.
And then my final concern is privacy. It's proprietary, and based on Chromium, so I think my alarms should be ringing.
One thing too, that I feel I should mention. I've been a long-time Firefox user, so thats my other option, if you think I should stay where I am, rather than jump ship. But even though I love Firefox, I'm still a bit tempted, so now all you shills have a great opportunity to talk me out of those couple worries I have about this thing. I really think I could keep using it, I think it feels pretty nice. At least I'll try it out for a couple more days.
So, what do you think?
if you just want chrom*, without the botnet, download iridium. Its exactly what youre asking for
>>59162130
I don't know if that really is what I'm asking for, though. As I said, I'm against a mono-engine web, and the main attraction Vivaldi has for me is the customization and all the settings. Settings and configurations are my fetish.
I believe Iridium isn't really that kind of a browser, more like just a normal Chromium with some of the spying removed. I could be wrong, though, I've never tried it.
>>59162110
I am sort of in the same camp as you, but I've been using it for a while. I'd hate a mono-engine web but for now it's the best alternative and I have no means to change it myself, what can a dog do?
NEW RASPBERRY PI
Same as the $5 Raspberry Pi Zero, which will continue, the new $10 Raspberry Pi Zero W features built in 802.11n wifi and Bluetooth 4.0 using the same wireless combo chip from the Raspberry Pi 3.
>5$ for that piece of shit chip
lmao no
Wouldn't it be better to buy one of the ones with a populated header, more memory, cpu for $20 more to sit on the shelf and do nothing?
Yet these BT/WLAN-related issues of the RPi3 are still unfixed:
