Alright /g/ents, I need some assistance, please and thank you. I'll give you some brief backstory and then explain my question.
My friend's computer wouldn't boot. Through the process of removing components and readding, I determined it was the GPU. He and I have the same GPU, so I put mine into his system and his into mine. His system booted normally, whereas his GPU in my system, one of the control chips on the PCB glowed bright red and emitted a burning smoke.
Obviously his GPU was btfo'd, and he redeemed the warranty. Later that evening, I began to notice that my GPU was randomly cycling to 100% load just while using Chrome. I ticked off hardware acceleration and it went away, and I assumed that it was just a Chrome shadow-update that had been buggy.
Looking into it today, I'm now convinced that something is up with my GPU and/or PCI-E port.
Attached is GPU-Z logs of myself with the Witcher 3 open for the purposes of testing.
On the left is my GPU in a different PCI-E port, whereas on the right, its my GPU in my normal PCI-E port.
Under load, the potentially-damaged port hits 100+ degrees celsius, which is obviously a bad thing.
In the lower PCI-E port, the temperature doesn't really ever exceed 80 degrees, if that.
Is it possible to have a PCI-E port burned out, and fall to regulate heat/temperature? Both ports are Gen 2, x16 ports, so I don't think its performance throttling.
I'm using an old x58 motherboard. I'm not really in a position whereby I'd like to rebuild an entire system.
The GPU is under warranty, but if its performing relatively normally in the lower PCI-E port, then I don't think they're going to declare the card defective.
Attached are my GPU-Z logs, any opinions would be appreciated.
Bumping for some assistance.
Any technology geniuses here?
>Under load, the potentially-damaged port hits 100+ degrees celsius, which is obviously a bad thing.
I presume your GPU never had this issue until you tried your friend's card in your computer? Have you looked into the PCIe ports to see if there is any dis-coloration/burning? Just a guess, but, perhaps there may be something creating more resistance on the port (or golden fingers)
>streaming sites like netflix, spotify etc are apparently unsustainable in the long run
Will physical media ever have a mainstream comeback?
>>60746709
I have gigabit fiber but just bought a new house in another part of town where I can only get Comcast or at&t, both with 1TB caps. For the first time in 10+ years I'm worried about my bandwidth usage and may resort to physical media of some kind.
Probably not, just more ads and then another (shittier) site rises from the ashes of the previous one.
>>60746709
I still buy CDs, spotify only has normalfag shit.
Need some quick help, buying a laptop online and seller will get an ssd for me just asking which one is best to buy? was thinking any samsung 256 gb, is that poor choice?
>need at least 256 gb no more needed
>>60745511
You mean you need at most
at least is the minimum
at most is the maximum
when you say you need at least 256GB you are saying you cannot have any less than that.
But you clarified and stated you do not want any more than that.
Perhaps you should further clarify and state that it must simply be precisely 256GB instead.
>>60745540
i apologize, would this once be a great buy? or should i get a cheap crucial?

Is it possible to install very small CCTV cameras outside in some city places and stream them home ? If so, where should I start ?
You can buy an ip camera and set it up anywhere you can get it a power source. You'll need an available wifi network for it though. You can also chekc to see if there are already unsecured ip camera's that do whetever creepy stalking you're trying to do already.
>>60744850
You can probably stream an IP cam over 3G with a cheap $2 SIM card deal. You'd probably need a DDNS though, which could be hard to configure.
Alternatively you could try crack some near by wifi network and use that.
There's also the power problem which I have no idea how to fix.
>>60744850
power will be the major issue (<6hrs of broadcast on a battery). also, how will you mount it? will people see it? cops will be probably called too. they might even run a sting op to catch you when you try to retrieve it or change the battery.

So I've been wondering about the best permanent backup solution for my data. I've looked into it for a few hours, and I think the best solution for consumers currently is either a bunch of Blue ray disks or some harddrives. I've also read that one could technically stick a lot of sd cards in a reader and refresh their charge every 4 years or so. What do you think about those possibilities?
Also, I've looked into bit rot in both disk and harddrive technology. I think the best solution to that would be to create some parity files with the parchive technology and put that in the same spot the data is. Has anybody already a fully set-up back up system? I completely avoid cloud solutions, since my Internet is not very fast (1mb/s) and I don't want to give my data to other people (even if encrypted)

No such thing. Besides that your storage media are prone to failure over time, who knows if you'll still have a device to read those media in 3 decades?

why ubuntu's software center so much sucks! Nothing is working anymore. I can't install wine, playonlinux.
Do you know any good repositories for them?
>>60742811
Ubuntu's software center is not a repository, it is a poorly coded program used to access the Ubuntu repositories.
>>60742889
yes i know. It just a gui version of "apt-get install"
and yes it is so poorly coded!
