Probably because it is off canon but close enough to usual canon that feels like a innacurately written WW origin rather than a stand alone elseworld. Least that's my guess.

That doesn't really make any sense, since the general public is already familiar with the clay origin.

Also, am I the only one who thinks this movie won't be a total disaster? Sure, it won't be good, but it at least looks like it'll actually be a Wonder Woman movie, and not a Generic Female Badass movie. All I can think of when watching that last trailer is "You Tried".

>>

Wouldn't that be more the current Canon's fault?

Since Cyborg was motherbox built I assumed they were trying to be similar to current comic canon to make it less confusing for people who get into the comics via the movies.

>>
The movie is going for a mix of her origins, actually.

Diana will start believing she was created from clay by her mother and given life by Zeus' magic, but in the end Ares will reveal that she's actually the biological daughter of Queen Hippolyta and Zeus, from an affair.

So far, and I think this was likely the intent, it's towing the line between kinda funny and just a bit grating.

But hey, it makes sense. She is the only kid on the island, and the Queen's daughter no less.

See, that's just dumb. Look, I'll only be that guy who gets pissed when Diana is shown to be an asshole, but just because she's a nice gal doesn't mean she doesn't have flaws. Kinda hard to tell a good story when the protagonist is a perfect person who never fucks up.

If it weren't for the ending I actually would have been fine with this being canon.

One of the things people complain about with Wonder Woman is her origin lacks the tragedy that Batman and Superman and even most other heroes have. Which I think was the impetus behind the Zeus thing, and of course also the thing with Barry Allen's mom.

And I think this story is an attempt to introduce some conflict and development into her early years.

>>
My only problem with Wonder Woman is that DC in their attempt to make the character more like Superman, they ended up robbing the character much of what made her what she was. She became a Superman clone in almost every aspects, thus giving them another problem: how contrast the two, specially if you're shipping them as a couple? That's why then decided to turn her into basically some sort of Faora/Ursa, by depicting her as this vain and elitist cold warrior. So in all coupled with the power boosts and that characterization Wonder Woman lost much of her humanity.

This story here, though, does the opposite for him. She's shown as powerful, yes, but her character flaws comes much from a human-like characteristic. She's spoiled and thus act out without thinking of the consequences.

Just wanted to bring up something someone said in the last LoWW thread that I didn't notice till later.

They said that the way writers always talk about Diana being a warrior to justify certain pragmatic traits is a bit dumb because she's grown up in literal Paradise with no war, her only exposure being tales told to her by the other Amazons and friendly battles like this one.

That's because Batman doesn't have that many negative portrayals, has more different portrayals that people find acceptable, and Batfags are usually more concerned about Batman winning.

Though I am curious what makes some fans so much angrier than others. Diana and Dick probably have some of the most protective comic fans I've ever seen, and Dickfags are going to town on that newly announced elseworld right now

There's a another good reason for why Diana being depicted as a pragmatic warrior who's willing to get down and dirty in a battleground.

Isn't the whole point of the DC amazons that they secluded themselves from Man's World because they think that men are brutish and vile kind? They should abhor that kind of mentality.
>>
>>92237005
The idea of that new Elseworld...maybe it's not the idea itself, but the timing? And the fact that (x) kills the (Y) universe is something more up Marvel's alley?

>>92237052
Nah it's the idea in addition to the timing.

Higgins said he started on it like over a year ago and Dickfags wouldn't have liked it then either.
Rmember, Dick was at his most heroic and competent than he's been in a long time in Grayson, yet he wasn't with the batfamily and Barbara so a very vocal bunch basically ruined everything for everybody.

>That's because Batman doesn't have that many negative portrayals

Sorry, anon, but that's a load of bullshit. Batman has TONS of negative traits and portrayals. The difference is that he's the type of character where that sort of characterization fits and makes him kinda cool.

Batman's always shown as psychotic, paranoid, distrustful, manipulative, controlling, pragmatic, abusive, vindictive, shady, untrustworthy, pessimistic, egocentric, cold, distant, and so on and so on. Recently he has been shown as myopic and clueless a lot. In team books and events is almost a constant thing that the other heroes distrust and hate him.

The thing is, while all of that is bad that shit fits him. It doesn't make him a bad character. The whole point is that he's a tragic character. So you want to pile shit on him. Show the whole world turning its back to him. Show him brooding.

It's such a common thing that doing a story where he's shown as the big bad has no effect. Brother Eye? That's so Batman! Batman aligning himself with Luthor or Ares? Well, of course he world for some nefarious plan. It has no she-bang.

Heck, there are a lot of Batfags that wank to the head-canon of Batman ending as a depressed old man all alone with nothing but regrets to as a company.

Seriously, what the hell is up with that? They're a bunch of Mediterranean lesbians who live on an island off the coast of Florida. Trying to force them into being "alien" will never ever work in any context. Knock it off.

Well, okay, they'll never be alien unless my theory about them becoming the sklarians is true, but that's just bullshit headcanon.

Excuse me, but I fucking hate that absolute nonsense. A "warrior who fights for peace" can describe a police officer, a soldier, and funnily enough A SUPERHERO. How is it contradictory to fight for peace? STOP BEING RETARDED. For fucks sake.

I wonder if Alethea was supposed to be the Steve Trevor of this Wonder Woman. They're both blonde love interests that cause Diana to leave Themyscira for Man's World.
>>
>>92238608

I't just DC's way of trying to portray Superman and Wonder Woman as equals in every regard. So she and her people are shown to be as alien as him and the kryptonians, making her and Superman two unique individuals who are all alone and thus relate over that.

But that makes no sense because Superman grew up surrounded by humans and most of the time only started to show his powers as a teen, and Wonder Woman and the amazons are fucking humans with Wonder Woman gaining powers thanks to her gods' blessing.

But even If they left it at that, it'd be fine, but often in an attempt to create contrast between the two they try to portray Diana being full of herself for being different than the lowly humans and Superman being humble about himself because he wish he was only human. That whole "Kal" bullshit grind my gears.

I just hate seeing Diana as someone who has this entitled sense of self worth due to physicality.
>>
Jill didn't do enough Wondie covers, dammit.

>>92238974
Alethea actually bears the most resemblance to a character called Mala, who since Wonder Woman's very first appearance has kind of been her "partner" if you catch my drift.

Morrison brought her back in Earth One for the same role.
>>
>>92238448
Thanks for posting, Tex.

I quite enjoyed that. Not gonna lie, I kinda wish it was canon. Maybe have her banishment synch up with Steve's crash landing, and it's perfect.

Again, I really like the idea that Diana's compassion comes from life experience, and a desire to make up for her mistakes. The tragedy here is her own fault, making it much different from the other members of the Trinity. Hell, even the upholding of Amazon values of peace and understanding is intact, since her failure to live up to the Amazon ideal is what caused all this. Good shit.

If I had any criticisms, it's that maybe Diana's a little much of a jerk, but's not a deal breaker. Also, maybe it's Thompson's art style, but some of the violent and tragic scenes come off as morbidly funny at times. Like the one poor gal who got brain damaged. Am I a monster for laughing at that? It was just so fucked up it circled around to being kinda funny.

Someone from the Legion. It'd be interesting to see Diana in THE FUTURE.

Probably Saturn Girl, specifically, if just for the contrast. Both are kind, maternal figures, but Imra actually IS very pragmatic, and has done some questionable shit for the greater good.

That's why I don't like the ending. The whole thing is a bit extreme. But I think it's possible for a character to have a heel turn of redemption without it having to be the entire impetus of them being heroic.

Yeah, you're right, Diana should be 100% perfect, have no flaws, and be so good she decides to leave the island all by herself and dedicate her entire life to fighting crime for no reason whatsoever. Also, whenever she's not on-panel, all the other characters should be asking "Where's Diana"?

Right, but the complaint is more that someone raised that way could not develop into someone as kind and selfless as Diana.

It would be mitigated if we got to see more of Diana's development AFTER the turning point, but sadly the story ends then and she goes out into the world. So to some it seems like the implication is that that single event is all she needed to develop into modern Diana, which is unrealistic.
>>
>>92250916
Yeah I suppose I can see that point of view, but personally I thought it was paced reasonably well. It's not just the one fuck up - she decides that she needs to win the favour of the girl who is truly humble, even though she doesn't really understand what that means (see I'LL SHOW YOU HOW FUCKING SELFLESS I AM, above), and is on a path to getting it, which you see when dead blonde starts smiling at the efforts and her kindness to the horses. She's in the middle of that change when a big competition comes along and reminds her what she's all about - the glory. She forgets the lesson half way through learning it and goes back to being her spoiled self, and then gets the lesson shoved in her face when she causes the tragedy and realises its true meaning.

I don't think it's presented particularly well in terms of demonstrating a change over time, but I would still interpret it as a gradual improvement, then a backslide with a consequence terrible and shocking enough to cement her in her selfless ways, terrified that selfish acts would cause another disaster.

All that aside it was a brilliant read and I really enjoyed the story - thanks for sharing

She's not spoiled, she's sheltered. Her mom wanted to spoil the fuck out of her, but Diana was always bucking back "mommy, stop treating me different!! I wanna do all the shit the other girls are doing!". I applaud that. Diana never wanted to be treated differently, but Hipocrytica-er, Hippolyta was always trying to hide her away.
