While reading War of the Gods last night I wrote down every named Amazon that is mentioned:

Hippolyte - Queen
Phillipus - captain of the guard
Menallipe - high priestess/oracle
Euboea - general
Myrrha - Queen's handmaiden
Epione - healer
Hellene - senator
Penelope - priestess/cleric
Pythia - warrior, soul-mother of Julia Kapatelis
Mnemosyne - historian
Ipthime - sculptor
Timandra - architect

I was surprised because the first time I read this I never noticed that Perez actually was drawing from a defined well of Amazons, I thought he was just randomly making up new ones as he went along, but all of these appeared in his first arc.

Humorously he does mix up Euboea and Pythia at one point.

Also I found it odd that I couldn't find any place on the internet that just listed all the named Amazons and their roles, so I'm keeping this in my notebook for later because I can only remember five Amazons off the top of my head.

Hey Tex.

I love The Circle. It's one of the stories that got me into the character.

Again, to echo the sentiments of Mark Grundelwald, there's no need to make up new shit when previously existing shit will do.
>>
>>91874405

Absolutely. It just requires a little bit of research.

Again I gotta hand it to Seeley for going back to Dixon's Nightwing and Morrison's B&R for elements to draw from for his Nightwing run.

Well, i don't think Seeley is doing a very good job using Dr. Hurt in the current arc.

Sure, it's always good to use what already exist, but there's a difference between just using something because it's an established thing and basically doing a repeat, and using something established to build something new out of it.

I feel that Seeley's use of Dr. Hurt is just nothing more than a fanservice.

Yeah when he revealed Hurt I kind of lost interest and didn't get the next issue. Hurt is so heavily thematic and meta he doesn't really work as just a random bad guy like that.

Not to mention that he's just redoing Dr. Hurt arc but with him obsessing about Nightwing instead of Batman, with Dr. Hurt trying to sacrifice Damian to a bird-like giant creature associated to Nightwing. Makes no sense.
>>
>>91874538
Diana, why you so sassy? :3

But yeah, it especially applies now, since comics have been going for approaching 80 years now. If you think of a concept you want to use in your story, it's almost guaranteed to already exist somewhere in the archives. All you have to do is google it, because it's equally likely some nerd has drawn up a wiki article about it somewhere.

COMIC BOOKS!

But yeah, I really like this intro scene. Diana rolling persuasion checks is always a good time, and it's a nice showing of how Simone writes her.

The trade of The Circle begins with an intro page by Mercedes Lackey, where she praises Gail for portraying Diana as a goddess. She makes some good points, but I don't know if I agree with her overall sentiment.

I'd compare it to the Truth arc in Action Comics DCYou, it's a really neat direction... just not permanently. And also like Truth it came with a really cool costume.
>>
>>91875217

Diana Prince as a secret agent working for meta-human shenanigans with her black shades was cool. Certainly the best use of the Diana Prince secret identity.

The whole army nurse or army secretary with the big rimmed glasses always felt to Clark Kent-ish.

And Etta is a character so few seem to get, even Perez. Perez made her into this nervous character, and then WML made her super insecure.

Like her entire original point was that she was obese but just did not give a fuck. If you're gonna get rid of the fat, sure, fine, but you gotta keep that aspect of not giving a fuck.

Exactly. She's confident, outgoing, not at all ashamed of who she is. I hate to keep giving Morrison credit, but Etta being Etta was even a major point in Trial. The Amazons were trying to fatshame her, and she laughed it off, showing them how shallow they were being.

A few threads ago, I said we don't have much luck when it comes to newer Wondy villains. Alkyone is one of the exceptions, and these pages are the perfect illustration of why.

I'd love to see her come back, but not necessarily as a straight villain. I think it would be more interesting to have her and her Circle cronies serving in their position of royal guard, and the conflict with them being more political than physical. Tweak them a little to where they're more of a Themysciran CIA/FBI analogue.

With all the time shenanigans we've been seeing in the Superman books now would be a pretty good time to bring back some of these kinda villains.

Yeah, but then you'd have the problem of Darkseid's progeny being a joke, Kalibak's infamous jobbing notwithstanding. It was the same problem with Grayven, nobody liked him so people started writing him as a joke, which was even more embarrassing. However, if she was only a pretender, then that's fine.

It's like, if she's bulletproof, people complain about her using her bracelets. If she's not bulletproof, people complain about her being able to take hits from Kryptonians.

Wonder Woman's a character you just can't win with for some people. That's why I say, when in doubt, just stick to the classic depictions and draw from there. If people don't like it, then they shouldn't be reading Wonder Woman.

The Dodsons kinda hit that sweet spot between semi-realistic and cartoony, giving it a lot of range in the types of stories it can be used for. The clean, bold lines make it nice and vibrant.

Plus, another thing I like about them is they manage to do cheesecake without being 12 about it. That's honestly one of the major reasons I generally hate fanservice, because it's almost always framed in such a way that you can practically hear the childish "hurr hurr" giggling. I mean, I appreciate the female form, but I would like for once to not feel ashamed of that because it makes me feel lumped in with a bunch of immature idiots.
>>
>>91877109
Thanks for posting, Tex.

The Circle is just an all around solid story. I haven't actually read the rest of Simone's run aside from the back up story that comes with the trade of this arc, so that's something to look forward to.
>>

I enjoy your posts and usually appreciate your tastes, Texas Anon, but I don't know if I can get into Wonder Woman.
I started with Gods and Mortals, and I only made it like, twenty pages in.
The art is fantastic, truly, but every other page is "aren't men scum? aren't women perfect?"
It's pretty grating.
>>
>>91877733
>every other page is "aren't men scum? aren't women perfect?"
If you didn't get that far in, it sounds like you're still around the parts where Hercules rapes the Amazons. I can guarantee there's no point in the rest of the series that paints men negatively like that.

Diana is the bridge between humanity and the Amazons, because she hasn't been emotionally damaged by men like they have, and the primary theme of Perez's entire run is the healing of the relationship between the Amazons and humanity.

I say definitely keep reading, because throughout the rest of the run anyone trying to be negative about men is treated like a cynic and Diana calls them out on it.

Also, plotwise, the first arc of Perez is definitely not as good as what comes later.

But yeah keep going because things get much better. Wonder Woman is all about love and unity between people, not promoting the superiority or inferiority of any gender.
>>
>>91877939
I'm sticking with it, because I trust you.

Stop living in the 90s, there is fucking plenty of great fanservice that doesn't do that, Frank Cho almost never does that in his Superhero books.

Noticed Byrnes run is getting a release soon, how is it Texas?
>>
>>91894849
I really don't like it. It's actually infamous among Wonder Woman fans for being really bad, which is why it's pretty frustrating it's getting a big nice hardcover collection over lots of more deserving runs.

It does have a decent storyline introducing Cassie, but overall Diana acts like a huge prick to everyone, is very "shoot first ask questions later", and even Byrne's art which I'm usually a big fan of is pretty awful in it, though it gets better after a year or so. He certainly knew how to draw Diana's hair.

It's one of those runs that people who thought Superman sucked before Byrne "fixed" him and who didn't like Wonder Woman were really looking forward to, but proceeded to drop after a couple issues anyway.

If you wanna read it, I'd recommend just getting it from my dropbox and giving it a shot. I'm gonna post it eventually, as well.

Not really following all the storytimes, but over the past few years and from what little I've read of WW, why does it feel like some writers try too hard, one way or another, to prove WW's worth or character by putting her up against the other heroes, especially Supes or Batman.

Perez, and every other WW writer who does SM/WW, for making her nothing more than an average Jane. Ruckas Hiketeia had a shitty premise and relied on an extremely idiotic and out of character Batman and WW to tell a very forgettable story.

If we look at SM and BM's best stories, they're usually standalones with little or no interference from the JL characters. I feel like its hypocrisy from her writers when they undermine her character or of others to tell their story. I also feel like its why writers of other characters use her as they please cause of a lack of solid characterization, a prime example being Kingdom Come, so much so that Waid actually admitted he didn't really plan much for her than to just play second fiddle to Superman.

Honestly I think this complaint is unfounded, since only in actual JLA titles, Hikiteia aside, does Wonder Woman really get any more involved with the rest of the League outside of occasional normal crossovers.

The only problem with Wonder Woman is poor writing outside of her own title, IMO. This has served as essentially bad publicity and causes people to assume she's poorly characterized in her own book, which is absolutely not true.

I think many mistake her incorruptibility for a lack of personality, which is unfair when the same can be said of Superman. In her own book, Diana has been very consistently characterized ever since Perez's run established who she is and her mythos very well, outside of a few outliers.
>>
>>91897535

WW can't escape Superman because of their similarities, and, for a minor extent, Batman because of DCAU. It's just that way.
>>
>>91897535
Also ironically the only Wondie writer I'd call a sellout is Azzerello.

But anyway I think if you really give the character a chance and read through her history, you'll quickly get a feeling for who she is as a character, and when she's being OOC in another writer's book, it'll stand out to you.
