Runes and sigils are basically the same "type" of magic, one just is more well-established than the other.

When one uses runes, they're using a system that's been established with meaning over the past thousand years plus, and thus they don't have to work as hard to imbue them with particular meaning.

Meanwhile, sigils are basically new runes given life via the magus. Here, you have a much more "out of the box" system, at the cost of added effort given to give these sigils meaning and value (assuming you're working with chaote sigils.)

I myself prefer using runes, as they're potent as shit, but sigils also find their way into my work frequently, and I've had success using both.

In regards to runes, there are two answers. One either believes that the rune draws their power from Odin, who earned them via sacrificing himself to himself; or that the runes grew in power from being used over such an extensive period of time. Or both.

With sigils, they're basically minute egregores. There was a handy chart floating around a while back, it basically labeled a sigil as a thoughtform in the same sense as a servitor spirit, an egregore, and eventually a godform.

The progression went in that order as well. Google Fotamecus for a cool story of a sigil experiment. Not that I buy that story completely, but it's still an eye opener in how many sigil mages view their work.
