While that is true, it's probably that Serena came at the right time.

The writers abandoned Ash ships after Shudo killed off Pokeshipping in Johto. May was introduced directly after and the writers decided to make Drew a love interest to attract females. Dawn could have been shipped with Ash but the writers made her sisterly with him and then possibly lesbian when Zoey showed up. Iris was not gonna happen.

Marathoning a saga is always easier than watching 1 episode a week when it aired. A lot of people who had negative opinions on DP when it was airing was because they either watched the dub or just watched 1 episode a week and got bored.
