It's not like XY's plot did anything until XYZ, besides Korrina arc. Most episodes were just incredibly bland, even the plot ones.
SM injects way more personality into everything, including the mundane. The overall plots are still predictable, but with far more unexpected details. So far SM has lower highs, but more consistent all around quality.

I just like for the Pokemon Anime to not fall back to status quo, Ash can win a league and move to another to get stronger. Sure he can start if fresh and use his region Pokemon in the gyms/trials, but let him call back some of his old Pokemon to mix things up at the league. SM is alright but it does need some sort of drive, the episodes we have now feel like the ones they'd use for padding midway through the season.

I haven't watched the pokemon anime in almost 2 decades, but lately I find myself getting back into this franchise.

Is the Sun/Moon anime self-contained and can be watched even if I didn't watch the pokemon anime since gen 2?
Does it expect you to know all mons from the prior generations or does Ash/Satoshi still whip out his pokedex for things like gen 4 pokemon he has already encountered in older seasons?

It's really funny how the girls got more girly and demure and sweet as the anime went on, but only because that's how Japan viewed women.

For example Misty's personality actually fits with a lot of 90's era anime girls, and it makes sense because that type of personality was popular at the time Pokemon first came out. Then as we got into the 2000's the writers designed May's personality to be sort of a mix of girly and tomboyish, as anime was heading to more girly and sweet girls as time went on.

Nowadays you either have to be very girly like Serena or Lillie, or a type of energetic girl similar to Mallow. Even May's personality probably would have been toned down more if she was introduced now, May spent a lot of her run bickering with all 4 boys (Ash, Max, Drew and Harley)
