Hence the presence of Snowball and Iwanko next to Satoshi with no Kukui around.

It's pretty clear they used it in Corocoro because it was the "coolest" art they had lying around and they needed to present the show in a different light.

Well episodes are animated months in advance, it's obvious the current crop of eps were already in production before they saw how people reacted to the first few episodes. It is possible the series will have a name change in the second year, and it's bound to get more serious when Lusamine and the Ultra Beast starts.

Also since Ash has his old face in Movie 20, I wonder if they'll go back to his original design at some point before SM even ends.

While on vacation in Alola, Satoshi comes across the Pokemon School and decides to enroll because he finds it cool. Later that night he is approached by the guardian deity Kapu-Kokeko, which gives him a Z-Ring and an Electric crystal for unexplained reasons. The next day it challenges him and Pikachu to a battle and teaches him how to do the Electric Z-Move, but Satoshi's inexperience with it makes the crystal break in the process. Satoshi then says he wants to take on the Island Pilgrimage in order to gain more crystals and properly master the Z-Moves, and after he passes the first grand trial, Kapu-Kokeko intervenes again and gives him a new Electic crystal instead of the Fighting one he was supposed to get.

That's where we are now.

Not quite. You win crystals by completing trials, which are more or less just a different take on gym battles, but the crystals serve no overall purpose beyond powering specific Z-Moves, there's no given reason why someone would want to collect a certain number of them, and Satoshi hasn't really expressed any interest in getting more than the two he already has.

It feels pretty directionless at the moment. There's no traveling, no companions (but a bunch of recurring characters) and no real goal to anything beyond Satoshi wanting a rematch with Kapu-Kokeko, which he's getting in episode 19 anyway.

Alright thanks anons. I can read out from your posts what I have already seen elsewhere: SM is rather a slice of life anime, right? It's strange seeing "meh" reactions to this, I have wished for Pokemon to go into this direction while watching XY. Those few episodes that didn't have a pokemon in focus, but some of the main cast were very interesting in my opinion - they reminded me of the first season. So what is the problem in SM? Boring characters or just bad execution? I know I should just watch it myself but I won't have time for that any time soon.

Despite what people might believe, the SoL format doesn't really fit well with Pokemon. Add to that the fact that characters have as much development in their episodes as CotDs from previous seasons (except for Lillie and a little Kiawe) and you have a pretty boring series. All the Pokemon series are technically slice of life - they follow a small group of characters that run into episodic events. What SM does differently is mostly just drop the traveling portion and have the characters in a static place, then double the amount of them and severely reduce their screentime. It's still the same rough plots as before - this week we had a "some of the Pokemon get separated from their trainers and need to find their way back" plot and some weeks ago we had a "the group hears about a Pokemon race and decide to enter it" plot. It's not some radically different type of storytelling.

Well that will certainly be a problem when I get to watch this. A bloated cast gives me bad memories, too many animes in recent past do this and waste potential. I don't know about you, but I think as you're getting older it just doesn't work anymore with seeing some new pokemon every week and calling it a day. It's mostly because until XY, all the series followed the rough formula of "small group travels the region", and they were able to tweak it a bit here and there for each series to improve on it. The writers have largely run out of good reasons for old characters to cameo anyway. Dawn's BW cameo always felt forced and rather random. If it weren't due to Dawn and Piplup's popularity she probably wouldn't have gotten a cameo either because there was no story reason for it.

This is my biggest problem with SM right now. There's no tangible end game goal for Ash. Not to mention he's got the two most important Z Crystals and can master them with no problem.
He'll collect a few more but what the hell is he going to do with them in the end? There's just nothing. And considering how Mega Evolutions weren't carried over from XY into SM (in the anime), don't think it's likely that Z moves carries over to the next series either, so you can't set that as a 'goal' for the Z move collecting.

The majority of the time she was the typical companion, with a slight hint of immaturity that most of Ash's friends displayed at some point. Other than the kid nickname (which was honestly around once every other episode or so, usually teasingly) she was actually fun.

Axew is probably the cutest main traveling Pokemon in the anime.
