The only thing that makes me feel better about MiG's demise is that the MiG-29K currently in service is a navalized MiG-29M2, which is pretty fucking cool.

DCS has a really fucking stupid way of dealing with AI health: a literal health bar.
You can see it in ground vehicles, but I suspect aircraft which lack flight models have the same healthbar. It basically means that until it reaches 0%, it's just as good as it is when it's at 100%. Holes in the engine, shrapnel in the pilots, and literal parts missing be damned.

Ground attack in DCS should only be done by one type of aircraft: Ground attack aircraft.
It seems stupid, but so many planes in this game have multirole options and they're all terrible. The M2000 is maybe the only multirole fighter that has anything remotely usable for ground attack, and even that is pretty awful.

The f5 is fucking worthless at ground attack because they made it out of paper mache to the point where I've been shot down by AK-47 fire, and because none of the armaments besides the GBU-12 has enough effect to kill anything unless you hit dead-on. The Mig-21 is the same way, except it has a few good ground-attack weapons.

Can I just start modding full-fidelity modules into Falcon BMS so I don't have to put up with DCS anymore?

Buddy lasing is just that though: BUDDY lasing.
It's the only way to make these multirole fighters capable of ground attack because of the fucked damage models.

Meanwhile, M2000 gets eight different kinds of bombs, F-5 gets bombs and rockets in almost two dozen flavors, Mig-21 gets a multitude of rockets, bombs, and gun pods, A10 gets tons of bombs, and so does the Viggen, and so does all of the FC3 aircraft.

All of it worthless. All of it has the effectiveness of pissing in the wind unless it's guided and/or precision. Occasionally you may be able to saturate-bomb something and get

You or the mission maker is making a critical mistake here: The F5 and Mirage are very capable ground attackers, The mig 21 is so-so, but still does the job.

However NONE of those are good against TANKS, especially not heavily armored main battle tanks. If your mission only contains tank ground targets, of course you're gonna have a bad time. Precision bombing is not a third gen thing.

So that's the Crux. If you want enjoyable ground targets, adding trucks, infantry and soft targets is the way to go. Atleast until we get better multirole planes that can deal with tanks better (F18).

Su-33 PFM is almost done, and they aren't just updating the flight model, but also adding a lot of systems and updating cockpit with animated switches. Basically a full round of polish with extra goodies thrown in.

Once they are done with that they begin work on the same for the MiG-29. So PFM, and hopefully fixed cockpit animations and lights, etc.

I think it has more to do with the Soviet doctrine of firing an IR and a Radar missile at a target that way it has to spoof 2 different things. Also how later when the Soviets got really into the IRST and how they figured that WWIII would be such a jam heavy environment that radar missiles would fail.

Any good resources on setting up optical headtracking?
I've been using an Edtracker (home made) for a while and its rock solid but has no translation (X,Y,Z).
I converted a PS3 cam and put some IR leds on a cap.
I've got OpenTrack and while I can get pitch and yaw to work fine, I seem to be getting translation in roll and in particular can't look at left or right instrument panels without it flipping about.
What am I doing wrong?

Fun fact about the MiG-29:

Soviet MiG-29's were equipped with data link equipment that was missing on all export versions. Basically what the data link was, was the GCI/AWACS could assign you a specific target and your only purpose in life was to go kill that bitch.

That target would be on your hud and you'd have all his info. Range, heading, speed, altitude, even though he is out of your sensor range. You'd fly towards that target on a computed route, and the datalink/computer would even tell you when to zoom climb and when to fire.

The MiG-29 really was nothing more than a very aerodynamically advanced 3rd gen plane. In terms of maneuverability, speed, acceleration etc, its still considered world class even today, but avionics wise it was very lacking. It's radar and IRST were obviously a massive upgrade over MiG-21/23's, but not good enough to be a standalone air superiority fighter, like the Su-27 was.

Pic related is what the interface looked like. Now I know the SU-33 is getting some system updates like in-flight refuel mode, terrain avoidance mode, but how cool would it be if the MiG-29 got this in the update?

The only way it would work would be through the comm menu. Basically if GCI or AWACS is available, it would assign you the closest target or something. Might be too advanced though, but not too secret, as all this information is found in readily available MiG-29A manuals.

Couple of reasons

1: MiG-29 was a cheaper, simpler compliment to the big expensive Su-27
2: MiG-29 had a different role. It was a point defense fighter, not a long range interceptor/air superiority fighter.
3: Technology wasn't available at the time when the MiG-29 was made. Sukhoi was actually worried that the avionics would hold the Su-27 back because he didn't think Russia could make good enough radar and shit. Plus the SU-27's radar is too big for the MiG-29, and the MiG-29 based on its role doesn't need all the fancy shit the Su-27 had.

By the time the MiG-29M was about to be put into production, the Soviet Union had good enough avionics for the MiG-29 to make it into a F-16C-esque aircraft with much better radar, plane to plane datalink, but USSR was kill (((

That's mostly due to his techjerk than any American bias. Almost all feats accomplished in RSR for example are the result of advanced technology and doctrine, not skill + initiative.

The inverse is true in Red Army. Specific vehicles aren't even named (ie. We never discover what kind of tank Bezarin's men drove, just that they had ERA, The MiGs are never identified, and we don't know what APC Leonid rode into battle) and the focus is instead almost entirely on the human element from the boots on the ground to the kikes in high command.

I have a TC160000 controller with the TWCS throttle right now. I'm not sure if the upgrade is 100% worth it. I definitely would like the extra buttons and switches, but that's about it.

I just remember sailing for months on end, and seeing absolutely nothing - not even friendlies outside ports that should've been flooded with them. I sailed pretty much to the home islands themselves, and still got no convoy contacts. I think I saw a couple of sampans, but that was about it.

From the manual:

The newer sukhois have a groud radars. The su34 has a internal targeting system. They can also use the eos to target things on the newer models.
Russians arent too big on targeting pods because their electronics are way bugger but they have some developments that can be seen at arms shows.
I think they have some gps bombs but i think they go if you are going to use a gps bomb might as well use a missile. If you need a bomb drop 20

After a brief look into it, it looks like they use some thing called SVP-24 (CBП-24), which is like some sort of GLONASS module on the aircraft itself, to assist in precision dropping of otherwise dumb munitions.

The module sets the parameters to automatically drop the munition once trajectories are in line for it to land exactly on target.

I guess you could say it's less sophisticated than jdams, but it sounds like it is far more economical. It also fits with the Russian mentality of "fuck you and fuck your entire village".

I don't think they've the same desire to spend $25,000 per goatfucker that the USA does. Rather just spend a fraction on a modernisation module on each aircraft, and bank on the re-usable system alongside accurately dropped cold-war leftover bombs. Drop errors must be low enough for it to be valid, anyway.

In contemporary usage (Syria), this system makes a lot of sense too. My understanding is that they're dropping a significantly larger number of bombs due to significantly more relaxed targeting constraints. This SVP-24 system seems like the economical choice, as opposed to each-bomb having their own individual guidance system.

Other than that - lasers too.

Take care of it and transport it in its box and it should last fine, feels amazing in the hand in a way few sticks do.

MiG-29 update is the thing I'm looking forward too the most. I just fucking love how that thing flies. I love it so much that I trade the SU-27's 10 missiles and amazing radar for the MiG's thrust to weight and speed/acceleration.

MiG-21 is my favorite module, but I'm a biased slav/slavaboo. Spotting is an issue that I think will eventually be fixed in 2.5. They seem to be trying different methods every patch. MiG-21 also doesn't have much to fight yet outside the F-5 and Viggen, but with the F-4, A-4, etc coming, it will be more fun.

I'm having a problem with DCS.
I can't see anyone. I'll get a marker from AWACS, even a radar contact, but either the dots aren't appearing like they're supposed to or something else. Everyone else can easily see me, but I struggle to see planes that are right in front of me, even with zoom. I only sometimes get lucky and see them against the blue backdrop of the sky, and even then it's a crap shoot.
