In tests it did good, but im skeptical about being combat proof.
But is the path they taken, so they dont need to worry too much about armor rates and be able to refit them into older tanks.

>Iraqi tanks literally unarmed of their Anti-tank ammunition
>Chieftain meme brigade only manages to disable two of them
Pathetic desu, here's an anecdote from Maj. Gen Ra'ad, the Iraqi who led and planned the invasion
>early in the invasion outside of Jahra, our lead IRG Brigade tanks encountered a Chieftain MBT in a trench defending a government administration building. A T-72 destroyed it and made it's turret fly off with an HE anti-personnel shell fired to the side of its turret
>yfw a T-72 catastrophically killed a Chieftain with HE round

I have more stories of Iraqis shittalking western tanks from their war with Iran, too. They got massive sale offers on Chieftains at a discount, but refused them because of how garbage they were.

If you're gonna shill for western tanks I wouldn't make the Chieftain your rallying point.

>Makki: He was a good division commander, but he had no intelligence background. He could not do the job of the director of intelligence. He refused to pass along the information in order to please the new chief of staff.
Let‘s get back to the battle at Susangard. Some of the Iranians deserted their tanks while their engines were still running. We put the tanks we captured in an exhibition area in Baghdad. Our armor sabot round pierced a Chieftain on one side and the round went through the front armor and came out the backside.
At this time the British approached us to sell us tanks. Salah Askar, director of armor, told me that when the British called and offered to sell him Chieftains he had remarked, ‗We don‘t want your stupid tanks!‘
(Interview with chief of staff of Iraqi 3rd corps)

>Hamdani (IRG maj gen): British weapons were not very good. The 90th Iranian Armored Division had Chieftain tanks; they had a lot of problems and did not fight effectively. The 16th Iranian Armored Division, which was equipped with Chieftain tanks, lost a battle against the 10th Iraqi Armored Brigade with T-62 tanks. It is hard for an armored brigade to destroy a division in 12 hours but it happened; it was a disaster for the Iranians. Kuwait was another disaster. It is hard to compare the Kuwaitis with us, but the result was that the British weapons quickly lost the war. There was a problem with British manufacturing. An order was issued that every tank had to carry two types of ammunition: the first was effective against heavy armor and the second was used against infantry and light armor. We were ordered not to inflict heavy casualties when we entered Kuwait, so we armed our tanks with the less effective ammunition, so the Kuwaiti tanks would be knocked out when we fired on their tanks, but their soldiers would survive. When we fired upon them using this less effective ammunition, I realized that even this ammunition destroyed the Kuwaiti Chieftains.

Yes, direct hits with (125mm) HE rounds are still very dangerous to tanks if you hit them in the right places. The Abrams for example has a glaring weak spot on the upper glacis plate, which is effective against KE due to it's extreme slope but is so thin that you can pop the driver like a balloon if you slap it with HE. Nevermind the other things you can accomplish with HE, like disabling the main gun, or the optics, or radios, or tracks, etc...

The problem with HE is a) it's harder to hit shit with, a huge problem for inaccurate Soviet guns, and b) the off-chance that you hit actual enemy armor like the front of the turret just gives your enemy a free shot at you.

As for 70's tanks in general, the general consensus (learned mostly from Yom Kippurt) was that tank armor wasn't worth diddly since nothing good against then-modern HEAT warheads existed and whoever shot the other guy first was generally guaranteed to win anyway. Thus, western designers started building around the idea that it's better to have equipment that lets you see and shoot the enemy first/faster than to have a thicc wall of armor.

Thermals/TOGs (Which appeared by 85) make such a huge difference in combat that it's not even funny. A platoon of Western tanks can erase a Company of their soviet counterparts before the enemy even knows they're there. See literally any scenario in Steel Beasts, or real world examples like 73 Easting.
>>
>>187413068

On tanks and IFVs? No I do not think, rather, I know.

Thermal equipment for the Warsaw Pact was restricted on the ground to advanced recon vehicles like the BRM (Which already had GSR on them however so they were more or less redundant). As for line units like the BMPs, T-64, T-72, T-80... they were entirely absent until the Berlin Wall had already fallen.

Of course, you could bring up the active IR searchlights that were only effective out to 800m or so and made said tank a big bright target in the night, but they really don't compare to passive FLIR.

I've looked at it years ago and even researched the background of it (looking at all belgian exports to Iraq in the mid-80's to confirm it), Iraq bought thermal sights for their domestic T-72. There's no sure evidence they were mounted on them or used in large numbers, but they had them
>>
>>187414604
What about that time when M1a1s and bradleys fucked up all those Iraqi tanks during a sandstorm?

Might have been T-55s or whatever.
>>
>>
>>187414930
they were all abandoned. The few that fought were virtually blind and leaderless and had no idea if there was going to be a fight
Also sandstorms affected thermals too. But any vehicle equipped with thermal optics can still detect things at 200-100 meters, while anyone using normal optics sees the sand scraping on his sights.

>There's no sure evidence they were mounted on them or used in large numbers
That's quite the fucking leap from saying that the Warsaw Pact had thermal optics on their tanks, let alone standardization.

Pic related, it's the most advanced sight that the T-72(B, which was exclusive to the Soviets during the Cold War) was equipped with. Thermals were not introduced until the development of SOSNA-U well after the collapse of the Soviet Union, which the Russians had to buy parts from the fucking French (Specifically, Catherine-FC) to have a thermal imaging capability.
>>
>>187415195
Oh, idk they were mostly abandoned.
It makes sense (since we are talking about the middle- east here) I thought it was just night vision they had, but it makes sense that it was thermals during a sandstorm
>>
>>187415207
>only mounted in 1989
>4 year gap between Russians and the west
I don't see anything out of ordinary, I didn't say the Soviets had them standardized on their tanks only that they had access to it + would've been there the same time the west started adopting it if they weren't going through an economical depression and political collapse. I said the Iraqis 100% had thermal optics purchased from belgium between 1982-1988 and it's not known if they were fitted.
>>
>>187415850
Bare-bones prototype imaging systems are a far cry from having them installed on every new tank, which NATO did. The point is that by 1985, the typical Western tank (Be that the M60A3, Chieftain Mk. 11, Abrams, Leo 2) was vastly superior to their Soviet counterparts in this department, overall making the tank itself superior. We haven't even brought up FCS, which the West again had a huge edge in.

>would've been there the same time the west started adopting it if they weren't going through an economical depression and political collapse
If you need to change major historical details in order for it to work, there's no real point even bringing it up. We are looking at the real history of what happened and what was, and the real history is that the typical Western tank was superior to it's Eastern counterpart.

>the Iraqis 100% had thermal optics purchased from belgium between 1982-1988

That depends on what you want to do with it. Rolling over everything in a M1A2 is pretty boring, but using shit armor like t72 or even t62 is pretty funny. And you can do equal matchups with best soviet tanks versus second-grade western stuff like M1s or even older tanks.

Also BMP-2 isn't even that shit, the gun is fairly good and the atgm can do a lot of damage to modern armor, at least from the sides. If anything, the Marder is shit compared to it, since its gun can't penetrate anything.

>If anything, the Marder is shit compared to it, since its gun can't penetrate anything.
The Marder easily frontally penetrates the BMP-2 from any range in SB.

That's not my experience with marders at all. You can do some damage from the front, but usually not disable it. I usually have to immobilize the bemps and circle around to the side to kill them, and even then it takes dozens of rounds.

Hello.

This is the MiG-31 Foxhound. It's maximum speed is mach 2.83, with a cruise speed of mach 2.3. It can reach mach 1.21 at low altitudes.

It uses the worlds first aircraft mounted PESA radar, the Zaslon fire control system and can engage up to 4 targets simultaneously using R-33/37 long range air to air missiles.

A flight of 4 MiG-31's can cover and airspace 900km wide. The WSO can provide GCI support to other aircraft, such as the Su-27.

Neat features include:
>retracable IRST that is mounted below the nose
>a GSh-6-23 gun that is mounted on the right side of the fuselage under the wing
>a wooden control stick that you can pull out of the ground in the WSO spot
>a periscope

dear /tanksim/
I was playing DCS and I wanted to know if it was possible to mod a weapon into the game for a single aircraft.

I love the F-5E, but it seems silly that it doesn't have the Python.
The Python was Israel's answer to the R-73. The Python-3 was the export version that was mounted on almost every countries Tiger ii fleet who was still flying them. It's biggest advantage is that it can be slaved to a radar for BVR firing before its IR seeker takes over.
Do you think adding this would be difficult? How is weapon scripting in this game?

The MiG-31 is a home defense fighter, and therefore has never been employed offensively or defensively, considering the USSR or Russia has never been attacked.

It's also never been exported, so it most likely will never see combat. Russian equipment that never gets exported is usually because they don't even want the slight chance of it ever falling in enemy hands, like all the rest of their shit has.

T-64 is one that comes to mind. MiG-25 was not going to be exported but after the defection they said fuck it and sold them, and immediately began work on the 31.

Nah. The radar and missile combination will always be a threat. Even if the pk % is low as fuck(i say that because slavshit is still slavshit) just the fact that it can get missiles in the air at targets from that far makes it dangerous. US and NATO doctrine accept no losses, so getting shot at is a huge fucking deal.

Against F-35's and F-22's? Yeah it has no chance, but neither does anything else really.

MiG-31 is still a genuinely dangerous platform.

I see. Chances are the MiG-31 will never fire a missile at another aircraft in anger, and will be retired. I guess its better than getting bodied.

Although the rumors are swirling again about a replacement for the MiG-31 that is going to be mach 4 capable, which I am fucking doubting hard, but would be interesting to see.

Russians might just say fuck it, we can't do stealth or avionics, but we can do fast.

The new meme in missiles is datalink BVR IR. So that might change eventually.
At the same time, that also robs the MIg-31 of its biggest advantage.

thanks, one of the biggest problems I'm having is finding the right target.

I'm used to flying the Ka-50 where I can just use the HMD to point my Shkval at the right area on the ABRIS and look around. Where as it seems really clunky and slow with the TGP and the FCR seems to be useless for picking out targets.

Before I know it, I'm over flying the obj and getting shot at by SAMs.
I suppose I should pre-flight plan more.
>>
>>187490381
Use steerpoints to designate the targets.
Works like a charm with ccrp and gbu12.

True. The Tomcat has the advantage of being able to turn without needing an airspace the size of Texas to do so.

>Professional Flight Model (PFM)

>More detailed and accurate simulation of the wing control surfaces that include the leading and trailing edge flaps and the differential ailerons. In addition to the conventional differential stabilizers, canard behavior has also been improved for more realistic behavior. The Flight Control System (FCS) will automatically reconfigure itself depending on the flight mode.

>The adaptations that make the Su-33 aircraft carrier-capable have been updated and improved to include the wing-fold mechanism, reinforced landing gear struts, and the inclusion of high-gain nose wheel steering for use on crowded carrier decks.

>The physical mechanisms by which the arrestor hook engages the aircraft carrier arrestor wire has been greatly improved. Correct physics have been applied to the arrestor wire and its’ interaction with the aircraft.

>The engines now have a "special mode" that adds up to 12,800 kg of thrust (instead of the normal 12,500 kg of thrust). This mode also includes realistic operating time restrictions.

>A new FCS mode used when aerial refueling has also been implemented. When in this mode and the control stick is released, the aircraft will automatically maintain level flight. This FCS mode allows fine-control and thus making it easier to make contact with the tanker within a pitch range of plus or minus 5 degrees and of a roll angle of plus or minus 10 degrees.

>The Auto-Thrust Control (ATC) is used for automatic speed holding and can be fine-tuned with a set speed switch. This can be useful with landing on the carrier.

>The automatic collision avoidance system ("Uvod" mode) is now included and allows safe nap-of-the-earth flying.

DCS Su-33 is going to be fucking lit senpai

I presume this is the right place for this.

>Sink a Kanin-class Destroyer (left)
>Get the drop on a November class sub
>It panic dives into the sea floor when the torpedo goes active
>Avoids first torpedo with a noise maker which then finds the Kanin wreck as a new target
>Fire another torpedo and when it goes active the November drops another noise maker, this time on it's stationary self sitting at the bottom of the sea floor
>Torp gets thrown off, finds the static Kanin wreck
>Fire a THIRD torpedo and it AGAIN gets thrown off by another noisemaker before finding the Kanin wreck
>All while this is happening the November is launching its own torpedos into the sea floor

This fucker should be dead, I'd have manually guided a Mk48 into it I could get those controls to work but I don't know how.

Pretty safe and fun and forgiving.
The other campaigns are pretty difficult, especially the Angolan one. The afghanistan campaign is pretty easy too but boring as fuck

The tutorial is pretty shit and generalized, find youtuber tutorials they are pretty good.
It's not really that difficult or as hard as some people make it out to be, just put yourself in the seat of an actual officer, someone sitting in the battlefield. Take into considerations things like confusion or miscommunication (command points), units that are suppressed will consume more command points to receive even simple orders (the commander spends a long time trying to communicate properly with their officer and telling him the exact coordinates and answering his questions and so on), units that are chilling and hooked into a telephone wire will cost next to no command points because the leader will relay the orders quickly and smoothly, 'roger' and they start carrying them out. 'complex' orders like telling your soldiers to face a specific direction, drive in reverse, will consume alot of CP even if the unit is hooked into a communication system and is safe/cohesive.

>>187644863
If you're gonna play Operation Star for the WW2 you might be better off with Mius front because of the engine update, but operation star definitely has some extremely brutal winter campaigns (Kampfgruppe Peiper is probably the most hardcore operation in all Graviteam games).

Also forgot to add operation star is the only graviteam command sim where you can play in the cold war (Operation hooper, Zalanashkol 1969, Shield of the prophet webm related), that's why it's my favourite command sim right now even though the engine is older.

More or less. It's really quite enjoyable once you get into it and the UI and controls click. I'm not sure how many of image attached style battles you'd get in SABOW, but they're quite fun in Op Star. Large amounts of infantry, a few half-tracks, forests, small towns, etc.

>>187643405
Youtube tutorials, and the steam forums helped me learn.

Main hurdle was on field artillery crew targeting. If you've 4 mortars, 2 section commanders, and a battery commander - place the section commanders directly next to their batteries ~50m. Keep battery commander in the best and safest position with good views, hidden & firing disabled. Keep cable-layers back with the guns, with AI turned on. They will run a cable out to your battery commander.

Battery commander will phone back coordinates through telephone lines to the battery commanders - battery commanders being directly next to the batteries (shouting distance), will deliver effective fire. Keep battery commander safe at absolutely all cost.

Solving this riddle solved so many of my "WHY AREN'T THEY FIRING OR KILLING ANYTHING?" frustrations.

I played a little, I only have Operation Star and no DLCs so I tried Pavlovka on the German side.
Seems interesting so far but the AI doesn't really want to do all of the stuff I tell them. More than once the half track drove straight out of cover and faced the opposite direction, pretty annoying. Also had a nice position for the STUG and he just kind of drove away after actually sitting there for a few moments.
Is there a way of separating the infantry of the half track unit and only giving them, not the half track, orders?

Pretty neat though, ambushed a number of Soviets as they crossed the river with my half tracks that were hidden in the woods.

Well, like I said. This is a command simulator, not a run-of-the-mill generic RTS, you are the highest ranking man on the battlefield (or outside) in charge of those troops, you're looking at a map and radioing orders to troops. You're not the brains of the soldiers, they won't follow your cursor, they will follow the orders (move to X coordinates, defend treeline, take cover there, etc). They will go there, and do as THEY see fit (StuG moved? the crews had a discussion about a different position, or the driver simply acted independently, normal human behavior). That's what effectively and completely makes graviteam a command sim.

>detaching motorized infantry
Right click on their icon, de-select components of the unit you don't want to command (APC's and trucks or infantry alone or anything else that appears in the list) and click "Apply filter", if you de-select them after doing this the process will be undone and you have to re-do it, so make it easier for yourself by mapping the separate infantry (or half tracks if you want those alone) by assigning them to ctrl+1/2/3/4/etc.
>>
>>187674051
Thanks, I see what I can do.
Guess I'll have to get used to the AI, it's similar in Command Ops but I guess this being proper 3D instead of 2D my microm. autism flares up a lot more.

I have the same problem.
I bought the mig-21, Viggen, M2000, and F-5 all at once.

I still don't know how the Viggen works, the M2000 is collecting dust in my hangar, and the Mig-21 is for "Fun days".

All that + FC3 during the sales must have put me 150 dollars in the hole of which I use the two modules that cost me about 50, and I still haven't really touched the FC3 aircraft.

From the old war-game general. Krasnaya Polyana is missing, but it's worth buying too. Together this is like ~100$ worth of DLC, but it adds so much content to the game.

I rationalise pirating for a game I love with the fact I paid full for Krasnaya & base, instead of waiting for the sales, oh well.

German Pavlovka is probably the easiest to learn the basics with - it's extremely safe - your enemy is the turn limit really, you need to blitz through, but the battles are forgiving. You get Tiger tanks - they get T-70's, if that explains it well enough.

Rakitnoe is an upscaled Pavlovka - much more balanced, and giving access to a much wider variety of troops. It's a really fun second campaign.

Okay, guys, what the fuck is going on?
I play DCS at 4k, and I am literally fucking incapable of visually spotting planes. It's like, if one goes into burner, I see a giant yellow orb 3-4 pixels wide, but they come off and completely dissapear. If I'm flying something Slavic with IRST, I can zoom in all the way to a contact on the hud, and sometimes there's a faint exhaust trail, but most of the time there's literally nothing there.
Is this a common problem? Or am I just shit? It's to the point where I will be chasing someone in a low loop and lose them in the ground clutter despite looking directly at them.
>>
>>187732437
It's because at range DCS makes planes one pixel big.
>>
>>187732437
DCS spotting is abysmally bad. Is this on 2.1 or 1.5 because people have claimed it's better in 2.1, I don't see it though.

>>187732437
DCS spotting is garbage.
At range planes only take up 1 pixel. If you are using a 4k monitor there's no way in hell you are seeing it.

That and the garbage performance in 1.5.7 has pretty much put me off playing DCS until shit improves.

SSD is 100% worth it, but
What is your HDD? When did freeze start?
>>
>>187775334
It started about two weeks ago, actually. The intermittent freezing only happens on maps that load units in, and it was fine with it for the longest time.

Only recently has it become such an issue that the game would freeze and then not recover. Usually it just freezes for 5-8 seconds and then back to normal. I'm wondering if I'm desyncing and that's resulting in the server just kicking me out.

Someone also gave a good suggestion, I'm on Wifi at the moment. That may result in a problem if it loads units in and their position aren't given to me quickly enough.

But again, this didn't happen before on the same campaigns. This only started happening with the latest patch.
>>
>>187776331
>This only started happening with the latest patch.
Doesn't sound like hardware issue if you ask me, unless they fucked up something big
Sorry, don't know what to suggest

Simg, I have a question about fighter planes.
What's the best way to approach an enemy fighter hot if you lack first-launch capability? Or just approach them in general? Assume I have their position from AWACS, but they have first launch over me (Like I'm flying the Mig-21 or something)

>>
With the Mig-21. What is the criteria to get flares/chaff to deploy from the SPRD? I can't get it to deploy on the ground like I can with the jamming pod.

Assume I've turned on the switches that should give it power.
>>
>>187786417
Perhaps they have the same interlock as the rockets so they don't fire unless you're throttled up?
>>
>>187786683
I didnt' think about it, but that makes a lot of sense. Otherwise it would be powering the rockets on the ground every time I pressed it.

What plane
>>
>>187788690
Sorry Mig21
I just had an instance where a Mig-23 blew me the fuck out because I ran out of flares and we went for a head-on confrontation with R-60s.
>>
>>187788785
On this note, I didn't know a Mig-23 could take an R-60 and live. Is it just that the R-60 is a tiny missile and I should therefore launch them in pairs?
>>
>>187788785
Is this with our without setting the chaff/flare balance beforehand?

And yes, the R-60 is really small, it's why you can fit two of them per pylon. They do have much better launch and tracking stats though.
>>
>>187789439
I set the balance, but for whatever reason; I can't stack more than 40 flares and 20 chaff. Is that by design?
>>
>>187788527
I find myself landing a 21 with less that 1kltrs enough that I feel the gas is a good investment, especially when I consider that I'm probably going to be terrain masking enough anyway that I can terrain-kill any missile fired at me outside of knife-fighting range anyway.
>>
>>187789921
I see. So the extra flares don't really help as much as one would think.
Last question, how do I git gud at hte Mig-21 radar? I had the guy right off my nose, but opted to wait for IR range because the radar wasn't picking him up despite the dot being in my reticle.
