Other thread seems dead, so I'll post it here too.

I spent way too long (like 2 days) modeling and rigging a first draft of the character for my game.

But whatever, I got it workable. Gonna make some key poses to block shit out better.
Also just feels nicer to use a real character instead of a capsule/box even when greyboxing everything else.

AGDG doesn't play games. You are wasting your time trying to shill here.

>its all relative to the dev doing the game
Wrong. Unity is inherently flawed and those flaws cannot be easily fixed because closed source.
>>

I didn't want to shill my game anymore, since whoever in agdg can buy a game anyway. I just argued with that fag that I have a game, I've posted it once and I won't post it again. That fag that thinks programming is only for games and it's something special to program games.

Is it possible to create a timer for a timer in Unreal? Or are there alarms like in Gamemaker?

I want to check a boolean variable every 0.01 seconds for 4 seconds. If that boolean is false I want it to do something. If it is true then I want the 4 seconds to reset back to 4.

I'm trying to make rechargeable shields. Right now in pic-related when the shield takes damage, it delays for 4 seconds and then recharges rapidly back to full. But if I take damage during those 4 seconds of delay, it doesn't keep track so it just recharges back to full even if I took damage just 1 second before it started to recharge automatically. I want that delay to reset the moment I take damage even during the delay.
>>
>>183764697
can't you just make it everytime ur hit, set isHit to true, and countdown to 4?

First time hearing this term. How would I reset it back to 4 in the middle of the countdown? Is it another variable or is it an actual timer/alarm function in the engine?
>>
>>183764697
why would you need another timer for that
if you take damage, at any point in time, set the timer to 0 and start counting, if the timer fills to full, start recharging the shields.
>>
>>183765062
This is what I would like to do, but I'm coming from GameMaker so I don't even know how to access this function/feature or what it was even called. In Gamemaker they were called alarms but googling it for unreal didn't bring up anything. But now I have an idea of where to look. Thanks.

You need to sort out the logic of your system, because you got it backward.

> if shield == shield max
> shield full -> do nothing
> else
> if last damage taken < 4 seconds
> shield not full -> do nothing
> else
> recharge shield

Don't need another timer. Just check for damage in the last four seconds. If there there wasn't any, recharge.

Godot also literally just allows c++ extensions. You're right though that Unity has a far better ecosystem surrounding it. All I know is that I couldn't wrap my head around making a game in Unity and I can wrap my head around making a game in Godot. Its like in Godot no matter what it is I know what I'm looking at. When I watch a tutorial for making a 2D game in unity its like

>import this model with meshes, kinematic body 2D, apply this red marterial etc etc.
>Oh our scenes camera is here let me zoom out so I can show you this orthographic view.
>Time to load up this external code editor
>here's the code split into a million different namespaces and Unity specific syntax, you also need to make sure everything you use has all the components it needs to be useful.

In Godot everything just feels so much better to use for me and its all part of one package. You want a button that has a texture?
>TextureButton, you can apply a texture if you want but the button is fully renderable and functional without one.
>How do I use my own texture. oh theres a texture dropdown, okay I guess I just import a texture and something like a simple png if fine.
>But my button doesn't do anything!
>Oh apply events, ahhh I see, on_press probably does what I want, and on_hover also does what it says I bet too!

pic-related. Have them hooked together with you or even make it like sidescroller sonic games where they just follow you until you tag them in like in Donkey Kong Country. Or maybe control them separately like in GTA V or Resident Evil 0 and just reload the area you left them in when you switch to them. Have them share inventories to avoid the backtracking slog most metroidvanias force you through.

Blueprints are a mistake.

You will suffer long and hard, and make little progress if you don't learn how logic works first. The blueprint you posted shows your lack of logical thinking, mainly due to lack of experience with logic systems. Blueprints won't teach you this.

Stop playing around with UE4 and read this first:
https://mitpress.mit.edu/sites/default/files/6515.pdf

Also, figure out your systems on paper first before putting them to code. Even experienced programmers working on new systems figure things out first before touching a keyboard.

This will greatly increase your efficiency.

My sudoku game is coming along. I can now generate easy puzzles.

Generating harder puzzles will be a struggle since a lot of advanced techniques rely on very strict definitions for rows and columns. I might work on the backdrop instead so that I can start advertising early.
>>

I have no idea what's the blueprint trying to do.
but here's my way of doing a recharging shield
use a float timerCountdown
if(getHit)
{ timerCountdown = 4;}
if(timerCountdown <= 0 && shield <= 100%)
{
shield recharges
}

if(timerCountdown > 0)
timerCountdown -= deltaTime;

why the fuck are there two AGDGs god damnit

these were posted last thread and i didnt see them till thread was dead but

it wasnt just animation; since I had to do animation AND modelling I had no time to do anything else and I was extremely pressured to put out animations for characters while i was modelling other ones which put almost all of the artistic workload on myself

when i realized we needed ~1000 frames of animation per character and at least one character fully complete just for a substantial presentable prototype, I wasn't up to the task.

the new project gives me much more artistic freedom and leniency and I can focus more on modelling while I produce animations that can be reused as placeholder for every developed character.

it's also much more difficult to make a competent fighting game as an indie project considering the standards.

this isnt an issue of me hopping genres and giving up easily, it was just that we picked the wrong genre to start with
>>
>>183766391
I hear you. I'd rather code everything like in GameMaker. But I just want to whip out a 3D game asap right now, been procrastinating for way too many years. No more distractions.

I'm already trying to juggle Blender, texturing in Photoshop, Unreal, and beginner C++, if I keep getting distracted by other stuff I'm never going to finish a game. I still need to go back and reteach myself algebra 1, so I'm not going to be learning proper programming logic or computer science anytime soon. I'm out of time.

You want to sit in a basement for 6 years making a game? Go right ahead.

Game dev is extremely time consuming and having a team makes it that much quicker bringing a product to market. Darkest Dungeon with a team of 6 took 4 years of development from start to finish.

For a single person to bring a game like Darkest Dungeon to market would take more than 2 decades.

Risk of Rain is extremely simple in its design and execution. The majority of games on AGDG are overscoped compared to RoR. Unless you are reskinning a tutorial or completed game, development is going to take 5+ years.

If you are doing a 3D game you are going to need a team. No two ways about it.

>>183769853
>>183769961

Fuck off. It's a unique concept. There was a great deal of research and development required.

This is what you fuckers don't get. Original games take development time. All your fucking castlevania clones, tutorial reskins and shmups aren't new or original. All the groundwork is done for you. All the ideas have been developed for you. You are just putting the pieces together in a different way and calling it something new.

This place is just amateur hour. You guys have no fucking idea. Talk big all the time and show 'progress', but it's only going to be forgotten a few months from now when you lose motivation and drop the project.

Amateur doesn't mean being shit, it means learning how to be good. Stop acting like you know everything, just fucking learn how to do things right.

fucking hilarious you god damned loser. is this your big plan for agdg? everyone just goes and "finds a team". you sound exactly like a stupid baby boomer telling people to just "find a job". collabs almost never fucking work. a lot of people here have 0% experience or knowledge starting out, what team, even if one existed, why would they want the help of a total noob? No. the only way to make a game here is to make it yourself. If you have some other source of help good for you but there is no such thing as "just getting a team".

>Risk of mecha

For music you will need:
>A digital audio work station
I sugest LMMS if you want to not spend money.
FL studio is fine too.
Guitar pro if you want to be able to rip off music you like( Tux guitar freeware option)
These come loaded with a most of midi effects
>Some theory knowledge
Get a book on musical theory, i took guitar and composition in France so i cant really recommend a book first hand thats now in frog eater runes.
>An instrument
You can get a decent little usb keyboard for 20ish bucks. This will help you compose your music since you can hear it first hand.

And a tip. Good artist copy great artists steal. Draw fags call it references i call it plagiarism lawsuits. It wonts stand up in court unless is 4 bars or more even then you can call it a sample or parody

Listen to some lesser know and or very old bands, steal their shit. No ones gonna know and its a decent shortcut. Godspeed hopoo

and i hate the coin tossing game so much.
I don't think i can "steal" any musics besides of cropping them out directly.

I was hoping there's a cheating way to get musics.
like before this, i used a random music generator.
it works okay but i can only keep on randoming musics until i found one suitable, and eventually they all sound almost the same because they follow a certain format/rhytm

HOLY SHIT ANON, WHAT ARE YOU DOING ?!

Keep it as a mech/pilot game, you madman ! This look and feels objectively better. Don't stray from a good concept like that !

Also, you want some ideas ? Here's some :
>only the pilot can fit in small passageways
>only the mech can take on the strongest ennemies
>you have to get out of your mech to reach to, and to crawl inside of tight spaces (ventilation shafts, etc), which will allow you to get to switches and/or puzzles unlocking the way for your mech
>make your pilot significantly weaker than his mech
>make the exploration all about getting out of your mech when needed, and getting back inside of it to fight dangerous opponents

Now write some backstory to justify it all, and publish your goddamn metroid-killer, already. I'd buy it, I'd play it, and I'm sure that I'm not the only one.

Midi to USB is the one thing in the universe that is truly universal. With blew my mind. So even whit a shitti one you'll be fine. If you want to go namebrank Casio, Roland and Yamaha are trusted. But the price goes up. I use a Casio. It was about 160 bucks a few years ago new. Now you could find it for 50$ used. Don't look for super old retro stuff. Hipsters drove the price of that shit way the fuck up. Used to be dirt cheap in the 90s

>>183777209
Shit son. Your game seemed decent figured you where some kind of willpower daemon. The best cheat way to get music is to pay someone to make it. It worked like this for centuries it really the only reason why we bothered to invent a way to write music.

That's where music theory comes in. If I hum a melody or hear one and want to reproduce it, first I find the pitch of the first note, then I since I can recognize the intervals by ear everything comes very quickly.
Recognizing intervals is different from perfect pitch by the way. Perfect pitch is knowing which note is it. Interval recognition is knowing how many semitones of difference there is between two notes.
>>
>>183777304
>Composing != Playing
This is true.
A lot of musician can't think up anything on their own
But i never met a composer who couldn't at least play one instrument, usually a keyboard or piano. Simply so they can riff out the melody out of their head, get it out there so they can actually see if its shit or not. But yeah at the end of the day. Composition is a separate skill that can be learned. But being able to play at least a bit helps a lot
>>
>>183777785
it's also useful to know if a part you're writing is going to be a nightmare to play, if even possible, given the limitations of a certain instrument.

Guys, hear me out.

I know some of you guys like retro things and so you go with 4:3 resolutions, but if your game isn't the best or most attractive game in the world and you still want to make some money from it make sure it looks good in 16:9.

If you can't render at arbitrary aspect ratio and it's too late to make the game 16:9 you can at least put some borders around the game (like Super Game Boy) so that there's no black bars.

What I want to see is a session based game which promotes player deception, backstabbing and paranoia.

Some games do this, but they're mostly confusing and obscure, or just plain unattractive (Town of Salem).

I've been trying to design a simple multiplayer system which involves heavy hierarchy and GoT-like situtations but it's fucking hard.

I think they have the same problem as trying make a new MOBA or fighting game.

To a certain degree they need to be complex to be interesting, which introduces a learning curve, which requires a large/dedicated player base in order to form into a viable game, which a small indie game will struggle to amass with that initial wall. No one wants to spend their time learning a dead game that their friends aren't playing.

I've played magic, but the only reason its fun is because i play it with friends. Commander is fun, moder forces you to spend a lot of money on it if you want to stay competitive. Hearthstone is just the latest wizards of the cost ripoff Blizzard pulled off. Gloom i haven't played. I've played gwent but its only popular since wicher 3 was so successful.

I think it would be hard to launch a card game without having a large player base already, and the market feels saturated.
Kinda like launching an MMO. WoW already has most of the players hooked, a budget of a star wars movie and is basically holding a monopoly. Unless you have something game changing don't bother, and for a small team, or one man, shit son its an uphill battle and you're Anakin Skywalker

He's right that Unity has an image problem.

But the way to correct it isn't policing what you can or can't do with the engine. They need to invest in making some high quality games in the engine and proudly displaying the Unity logo while advertising them.

UE3 had a lot of garbage but Epic clearly showed what the engine was capable of with Gears of War 1-3. UE4 has the same thing with Paragon and Unreal Tournament 4. Unity has a few third party games like Hearthstone that are ashamed of the Unity name.

Well you see, this animation is a statement about the ephemeral nature of our occidental societies.
Ever since I was a student, I have been fascinated by the endless oscillation of the zeitgeist, which I tried to express here through the nervosity of this poor little pixelated dinosaurian.
As its tail raises, what starts out as yearning soon becomes manipulated into a tragedy of power, leaving only a sense of decadence and the prospect of a new reality as it falls flat yet again. And as this spatial phenomena become distorted through emergent and personal practice, the viewer is left with an insight into the inaccuracies of our world.

It means nothing, it tells nothing, and it's just an animated little dino for the sake of it.

I'm trying to work with an entity component system but it's a bit confusing. Here's the thing, I have animations, and those can change depending on a lot of different things based what kind of entity I'm dealing with. Like for example a player character changes animation when attacking/moving changing direction but I also have enemies that don't change animation based on these things and should only animate in a static loop.

How should I differentiate between these in my animation system? How can my animation system know that an entity should change animation? Should I change the animation from a different system and make the animation system only update my animations? I'm a bit confused with this paradigm.

i am so tired of the constant fucking math i started making gaem to have fun and design shit and play it and not to constantly do hawking tier shit
>>
>>183803015
The arctangent of x is defined as the inverse tangent function of x when x is real (x∈R). When the tangent of y is equal to x: tan y = x. Then the arctangent of x is equal to the inverse tangent function of x, which is equal to y: arctan x= tan-1 x = y.

the actual in-progress comments are more detailed, this is what I had for the edge-of-map one:
---- fix typeless collision checks when rubbing against the edge of the map
-- this has the same issue of collision type being set to "none" while in the block that's supposed to only run when collision type is not set to "none"
-- logically it should only run once but it runs multiple times
-- it always runs exactly 10 times
-- it runs 10 times because the loop that comes after it loops over every structure once
with each one (or two) being a step in solving the problem

No one cares about arctan. arctan2 is the new hotness. arctan 2 takes a signed x and y axis, and returns the angle. Since gamepads return x and y axis values for the thumbsticks, you use arctan2 to get the angle of the thumbstick.

No. You won't. No artist will ever join you unless you pay them. Your idea that good game design will somehow attract them? It's a lie. Also, you aren't good at game design - at all. You simply can't compare to the raw metric power of AAA studios. The fact that you fantasize about a cool world you want to be absorbed in because this one is miserable doesn't make you good at anything.

Like what the hell, I can't just drag a timer into the event graph? It's such a roundabout way of doing something so simple. There's no built in timer that just counts down? You have to set up so much stuff just to get it working that I might as well have programmed timer functionality myself into Unreal's source code. I just need a stupid timer, senpai. I'm sick of having to look up everything and do all these tutorials for simple things, I just want to get to the real action already.

The official documentation for timers doesn't explain anything. It's just a long-ass tutorial for how to add fire damage. What's a delegate? What's a timer handle? Why does it need it's own custom event? Why does it need it's own 'set timer by function'? Why can't I right-click, set timer, and be done with it? Not all of us are programmers, stuff you guys think is obvious isn't obvious to everyone. Gamemaker only needed one line tiny line of code and it worked perfectly. There's nothing like that in Unreal, not even an explanation of why or how things work, it's just the way the engine handles it. That's not good enough. And I'm not the only one complaining. Programmers trying to work outside of Unreal's framework complain about the lack of documentation. My situation is not unique. Unreal can be a pain in the ass.

It's very cumbersom and unintuitive when you have to switch from your script to your node every time you want to check or change the timer variables, especially when you're using multiple timers in a single script.
The fact that the devs removed time.time and etc. from their python mod so that you're forced to use the cumbersome visual programing shit for timers says all you need to know about Godot and visual programing.

It's explained in the early tutorials. They're used for binding events.
>What's a timer handle?
A way to reference a certain timer
>Why does it need it's own custom event?
How do you plan on setting a timer for a function without a function.
Why does it need it's own 'set timer by function'?
same as above
>Why can't I right-click, set timer, and be done with it?
It takes three right clicks. Unless you have sever arthritis that shouldn't be hard.
>Not all of us are programmers, stuff you guys think is obvious isn't obvious to everyone.
All I've ever done in programming is like moving a cube in SDL about five years ago, and a shitty algorithm class where the teachers barely explained anything.

A stationary gun fires a bullet at the stationary target two times. The first time there is no gravity and the bullet travels 5 seconds at a speed 10m/s before it hits the target in a straight line
The second bullet (also fired at 10m/s) is pulled down by gravity, so the gun has to tilt up to hit the target, what will be travel time of that second bullet?

So you only need to redraw the map whenever a new room is discovered, and you only need to see your list of which rooms have been discovered when you redraw the map. Doesn't seem like checking an entire grid or array would be a deal in this case, unless you lack the ability to code that sort of thing. Alternatively you could just add every room to a list as it's discovered, but you'd still have to query the entire list to avoid duplicate entries. There's probably a better solution, but neither of those are particularly bad; I think you're just being lazy.

It's amazing how no matter how many times it's done, new collision checks always finds a way to get messed up. After some debugging it's working though.

I feel like something is missing to make picking stuff up satisfying though, maybe it'll feel alright with just a good sfx. Maybe particles but probably not. Maybe show what was just picked up over the player's head for a split second. Don't think I'll bother with it at the moment.

I know who you are faggots, you know who you are, you'd better get the fuck over yourselves, the thread won't improve by you staying out of it

Try being taken seriously on 4chan when you call someone a retarded niggerfaggot. Now do that in your grocery store.

Needs more delay between other birds taking off, and a faster wing flap speed.
Otherwise fantastic, juice is always good.

Unless there's a downside to picking stuff up, the knight should attract meat chunks when they're just a few pixels away, so you don't have to get to their exact Y position.

>people that make money on their games
>people that put out the best demos
>people that get the most praise when they do/did post here
not all of them are the best devs, obviously, and not all the best are on there
the best tend to be on Discord though, and that's not bragging, it fucking pisses me off
we have this thread, the Discord, the board on 8ch, and arguably the /v/ thread and its IRC that are all supposed to be interconnected and one community but it's all splintered, it's not a cohesive community, and people hate each other
I just want impressive people to be around each other so they can drive each other higher and be easier to find

No. The reason is Windows doesn't have any easy way to change the icon of an executable after it's already been compiled.
Every other platform allows for a custom icon, not Windows.

Asking again, but with a video this time, how do I not make the movement super jittery when using IKs ?
The only way I've managed to reduce that jitter is by adding more keyframes but doing that again sounds like the wrong solution.

How can I fix my ground in UE4, when I add a world displacement to it? The individual polygons kinda separate from each other and I can see the gap between them, so they look like they float in the air.

Don't really like the vacuuming items mechanic, I feel it makes pickups feel less meaningful. Plus each enemy will drop either nothing or one pickup item and will almost always be on melee range of the player on death so that wouldn't make much of a difference.

China's one child policy (active until end of 2015) led to a disparity in the ratio of sexes born due to a traditional preference of boys over girls. Peaked at ~118:100 boys:girls if I remember correctly.

That might be a little bit TOO MUCH juice. Some light shake with a nice SE should be more than enough. That sort of shake would be good for taking damage or something, though.
