I saw a bit of that discussion and it did pique my interest. I think it would be neat to have a recap site where you can search for specific games, progress, and devs. Might be a bit far out and in the end not even come to fruition, but I've already started experimenting with the HTML recap generation at least

Remove every trace of waifus and faggotry from stardew, improve the mining and add some solid dungeon bashing. I pay you $20 for it at least.
>>
>>183674430
true. stardew boy started in like 2011 or 2012. the landscape is so different now, and it'll be even worse by the time you finish a game in 2020 or so. the "clone a popular game" trick has been known since 2012ish so any game worth cloning will have several attempts by now.

that said, you don't need to worry about all of them, only the 2-3 highest quality ones.

honestly, if you want to make millions and you have 2-4 years to work with, you might as well not try to make one good game but 8-12 meme games and hope one sticks, plus dozens of prototypes along the way.

Yeah it would be pretty awesome to be able to see the evolution of a project, that's imo a huge draw to sharing and sticking around /agdg/. Even when I'm not working on something, I really love catching games that keep improving.

I think it would also encourage devs to keep participating and not just appear out of thin air or disappear too much. They'd be able to call up a big stack of progress and a neat record of history to look at or show anyone interested.

Still not dead, for the maybe one person who cares. Progress is slow, I'm at one of those "oh god there's so much that needs to be done" points where you just end up not doing much. I'm getting the party UI sorted though, it's not going to be a game about anime girls, I was just thought I'd have some fun with the sprite import feature. Also implemented a system for making rooms unique, which will be very important later.

Ah, another one? I took a week away from this place. What exactly is taking so long?

Anyway, JSRF is just too ambitious. Nothing indie scale has the resources. The music comparison alone will make or break your game's sales. Art style, game play, graffiti, boosts, voice acting, unique designs, unlockables, intricate level designs, all that god damn animation and even a multiplayer to live up to.

Making every character do a unique set of dance moves both in & out of skating would drive any animator mad. Graffiti & music is gonna an absolute nightmare since those are the first things you've got to live up to.

No one Indie scale will ever make it. Too many things to live up to

Gameplay isn't the problem. The problem is image & cult following.

Gameplay & coding will be the easiest part. But you've got an instantly recogisable, distinct, meme-able and above all else absolute earworm filled soundtrack that is the number one thing that comes to mind. So you need a talented sound guy. Second is art. While not complex it's distinct, vibrant and varied. So you need a skilled artist who can churn out a ton of really solid assets. But then EVERY FUCKING CHARACTER DANCES, So your animator better know his shit too. Oh and Graffiti. Let alone the fact it had it's own paint editor to make your own it came with hundreds of talented artwork. Many of which several city councils would love to boast about. So that alone is a nightmare to live up to. Good art with a choice.

JSRF isn't a complex game to play. But it'd be a very difficult game to make. You'd be held to a standard most spiritual successor wouldn't be. Since instead of just gameplay you've got to live up to a feeling. A feeling that was made from several different factors. You can't just make 2D Harvest moon or Dark Souls and get a solid comparison. Skimping in any one area would make the "game" feel disappointing. Skimping in more than one just makes it far worse.

It's a too resource intensive dream for indie devs. Only a big studio could manage it. But alas the rights are in limbo

>>
>>183677567
>this one is about male sexuality you moron
There is zero indication that the poll is about male sexuality until you read the answers. And then you just have to assume it's a question for males only.
Why even add the "I'm a female" option at all? Why not put (male) in the question title or something?
Why not make two polls, one for females, one for males?
>>

Well that's the smart thing. But everyone who attempts to make indie JSRF is likely a fan. And marketing to JSRF fans will get you a large enough base just on their hopes alone. There is no best, sorry. If you're shit at art, go super low res but juicy (16x16 or less). If you're better, go up to, say, 64x64, but that will massively increase the scope of your game.

Anything more is just retarded regardless of your skill (unless you're automating the process somehow, or your sprites are extremely undetailed).

Short version:
Unity's user agreement states that "Between you and unity you retain all rights to what you create with Unity".
Sounds dandy right? Except that "Between you and unity" is really vague in legal terms, if you read all the readmes within Unity (5 specifically) (which you really should) you'll find that the SKL that Unity 5 is built on Isn't owned by Unity but by another legal entity (owned by the same company as Unity). And the SKL's user agreement(which you have to literally email Unity to get access to) states that THEY in fact retain the right to all content used within products based on the SKL, so for example music, sprites, models, whole games within Unity 5 etc.
And technically, Between you and unity, yeah you retain the right, but between you and the owners of Unity you loose the right to everything you bake into a project.
This is why most major companies are switching engine or staying with Unity 4 right now.
Lots of huge games on steam that are now having their funds sent to Unity rather then the devs. And made even worse due to the nasty NDA.
>>
>>183680236
Only with simple models for now and limited views. Few tries for more complex things (characters) did not end too well (spend too much time making just one set of sprites look ok).

I feel like a retard but don't seem to understand how this is achieved in Unity.

There's 2 things I want to achieve:
1) Have the game's view maintain always the same aspect ratio. If the screen resolution doesn't match, have black (or other) bars fill the screen.
2) Have the game's view be an exact multiple of a tile (or engine's unit) number. For example, 30x20 or whatever.

Pic related is an example of both, although made in GameMaker.

Every kind of forum thread and tutorial I find regarding this issues is more about having the game's resolution or aspect ratio adapt to numerous mobile devices. I just want to have precise control over the aspect ratio and the width and height of the camera in game units.

Is this even possible in Unity? Can't think of a game mde in it where this is a thing.

Eventually it will. I have to reuse those columns tiles after all
Right now I'm only focusing on finishing the first stage to be able to release a demo as soon as possible, but I have plans to get in at least a forest/swamp and mountain/ruins level after that. I will probably turn that small catacomb area into its own undeground level eventually and I kinda want to work on some sort of laboratory at some point.

Solved the problem I asked about before about not wanting people to solve the entire game before they start clicking on mines (monsters).

Now, the extremely light "story" of the game is that you'll have a little goblin jew companion following you around who is selling out his companions by giving you information about the dungeon in exchange for gold (clicking on tiles). He charges more each time, but it's free if you're revealing tiles next to tiles that are already revealed. Cost indicated by the yellow number on the tile.

Nobody should take anything they read here seriously because the likelihood of it being false or coming from an insane person who doesn't make games is just too high.

I want my RPG game to have a large busy sprawling city with huge buildings, but I havent figured out what perspective my camera should be. Its obviously easier to make huge cities when the game is a sidescroller, but for a top down RPG, you cant really make tall buildings because it will block out the view if characters want to walk behind them. How can one achieve this? Is there any RPGs that do this right that I can reference?

The only workaround I can think of is to make the camera very close to the character instead of it being high up (like most top down RPGS).

Game: Autumn Vale
Dev: Nintendev
Tools: UE4, Blender, Visual Studio
Web: autumn-vale-game.tumblr.com
Progress:
+ Refactored item code. Now easier to add/edit new items and behaviors without a billion blueprints cluttering my project.
+ Item spawning now driven by data from a table rather than entered by hand in the console.
- Gutted majority of blueprints which used to make up the items and inventory.
- Mysterious crashes and Item data table wiped. Attempts to force delete only saw it re-appear in the project for unknown reasons. Replacing references to the table with another table pissed ue4 off even more. A couple editor restarts later, the old table is restored (albeit missing a few rows but OK). A few, but not all, uses of the table in my blueprints broke without notification but compiled fine; some fuckery was afoot.

Progress:

+ UI for the scroll page of the character menu is done.
+ Made a new area ("Blood Temple" for now) and also its entrance in a desert.
+ Improvements on the card encounters (regular ones). Now the shift is done more smoothly from any area and the return from the encounter as well. The basic card template is done. Currently working on the phases and various triggers that they might activate depending on the active cards.
+ Fixed the scene loadings

As I mentioned, I couldn't really code it on Unity, the multiplayer especially is something I can't handle yet.
I have tested it with bits of paper and stuff, and it's working well. The game currently exists as a document, so I'm not sure what I can show.

However, I want to add a few digital board game features which would require a system to manage it.

I'm attempting to code it again from start, this time on Godot. Hoping to find someone who can help me with that...

I know that it has to really stand out from existing card games like Hearthstone, and I'm positive that I've achieved an identity of its own.

One thing you can do is stencil the player so when they're behind a building you can see their silhouette. Ideally you should avoid needing this, but it doesn't hurt to have it just in case the player does walk behind something.

Design your cities so that the player generally walks in front of the buildings not behind them.

Military Oblique is a pretty good perspective for a game where you walk around a lot of buildings. It can have taller looking buildings without covering too much. As a bonus it's also good for indoor scenes.

Thanks! Yeah, I changed the arms recently. I didn't touch the legs though.
It's hard to say about exact time as I don't have actual levels implemented, I'm focusing on movements and separate map elements before doing any content (it would be bad if I had to remake everything after major changes in gameplay).
Time will come down to getting essential upgrades, beating bosses and keeping momentum in between. I don't like long boss fights, and I like non-linear progression so it will be real fucking fast.

I'm not even talking about the equipment, man, that shit is whatever.
There are familiars, shield rod spells, command spells, optional bosses, even half of the upgrades are optional.
All makes you really excited about exploring the game, that one room might have a pointless sword, a piece of meat or a new fucking mechanic, you'll never know. Meanwhile in metroid every upgrade is required to beat the game, once you did it you know for sure there's either a rocket or tank in every other room so why bother.

Hey, friends.
I read my (you)s even if I'm not around at the time - so I'll answer some questions I got.

>1) Why python?
Because I want to get better at python, simple as that. I don't want to use anything else for this project besides maybe Cython if there'll be use for it.

>2) Is the point of the game to destroy all blue cubes?
No. I'm blatantly stealing the concept of game Push Push Penguin, where you have to kill monsters by pushing the blue (ice) cubes at them.

Progress: Implemented hittable objects. These will eventually become the monsters, so they die when you shoot ice cubes at them.

>I'm not even talking about the equipment, man, that shit is whatever.
You only mentioned the energy tanks and shit. Goal post moving is just weak. You could have just made this post without the flail.

Anyway that polish makes the Metroid games. It's a tight solid experience. You may prefer Vania, but it's not as solid a design philosophy. I like the options it has, when those options mean something. Optional bosses are great but everything else metroid either has an equivalent or sadly ended up redundant. Comparing the two is a bit twisted since Castlevania always had rocky development (stupid fucking studio, amirite?) so you can see why it's sloppier than metroids. Metroids play it tight and are good all round, castlevania needs that last bit of polish & you enjoy it despite it's roughness

To not annoy the player who has a full party with healer. Seriously, let him get knocked out so long as the team is still up & at em. Plus it let's you add more tactical control if you add revival mechanics (like one character has to do CPR uninterrupted or something)

The easiest way to make a character unlikeable is to make them Mary Sue, with couple exceptions.

I'm trying to get the normal of a collided wall in Unity, but sometimes the normal has a Y value, as in it slopes downwards. This happens even when the character is grounded and collides, using a CharacterController.

Robotech did this to the MC. You do the final mission hyped to stop the aliens, the credits roll and you discover the entire game has been the mc recounting the events in his last transmission. He has done his duty for humanity. The entire game is in first person dialogue

>Okay so how do I make a character likable enough for this to work?
By spending effort on a little details.
Like having a little girl character who have beloved pet doggie, that doggie beind lame on one leg and girl taking it on hads constantly. And then make her die because of her doggie couldn't run fast enough from wild beast so girl stopped to take it on hands and this was enough time for a beast to catch up with them and slice girl's legs off to eat her alive afterwards.

someone with low morals does terrible shit as subtly as possible because there is nothing gain (individually) from notoriety and rarely gets noticed because they're so common.

someone with medium morals are regular folks who think they're "good" because they've stood in perfect formation their entire life.

someone with high morals can't help but cause shitstorms throughout their life because every wrong they call attention to either angers the terrible people who have no qualms attempting to destroy them if they can get away with it... or even worse, angers the "good" people when theyre shown that their orderly goodboy life has been tacitly endorsing terrible things.

it's easy to get rich with no morals and it's easy to take money from people with no morals when youre not weighed down by high morals.

you're talking about all of the flourish before the substance.

once you have all of the core mechanics in place and can design a level that uses rails, rideable walls, and the player can move and jump properly, youve effectively made JSRF and at that point all you have to do is flesh it out

music isnt a problem, we've got at least one very talented musician on the team who's cabale of producing the same quality and aesthetic as JSRF

Graffiti isnt an issue, we've got several artists who are cabale of and would love to work on graffiti art

the only major roadbump is the dance animations, which is such a minor flourish that it could be done virtually at the end of the development cycle.

No. He can't do it alone. Don't have that mentality, he will need help.

And in all honest JSRF's weakest point was it's simplistic gameplay. You can try but you'll be begging for kickstarter long before the mid point. JSRF is just too bit colossal target to spiritually succeed. That isn't a problem if you can handle getting it Kickstarter ready, but that's the only way you're getting it done.

Good luck, but you're underestimating JSRF. Remember many have already attempted it

Oh shit I just realized Jim isn't aware at all that he is responsible for the poisoned attitude towards Unity.

Everytime he hunted an asset flip he called out Unity and the Unity asset store for it, because yes it is the source of the issue, however the real issue is that devs would use shortcuts like asset flipping to begin with. Everytime the engine and the asset store were blamed, another nail was in the PR coffin. After 6 months of this (and later a year) the meme was set.

No I'm not. I'm talking the substance JSRF is known for. A simple gameplay with no feel isn't going to work for the JSRF crowd. If you're not attempting the end goal then don't call it JSRF because you'll just disappoint people.

Sounds like your team is small. Too small. Look, dude, I'd suggest something easier. Drop the big ambition and just make a roller skating game. See what you learn and how hard that much was before dedicating yourselves to a challenge far larger than what? 3-5 people? Get some experience before making JSRF. Make JSR-lite or something.

It's too much for a small team. You'll just disappoint with this attitude.

Whatever, this is the seventh attempt I've seen at JSRF on /agdg/ so... I want to say don't be stupid.

Bullshit, Unity themselves are responsible for the image.

They went the route of forcing bad developers to use the splash screen, which simultaneously allowed them to become the de facto game engine while ruining the engine's image because any decent developer removes it.
Epic on the other hand require you to get permission to use their splash screen and went so far as to threaten legal action against Hatred when they used the logo without asking.

They've also become incredibly lazy and basically just assume you're buying assets to make up for core features lacking in the engine

I don't think it's the consumer's fault honestly. Jim was literally the first well known person to say
>LOOK ANOTHER BAD UNITY GAME
while specifically digging for only bad games. He's kind of a shit raker who thinks he's policing game development as a whole but really he's just raking shit over the scene and his viewers minds, making it harder and harder for them to enjoy anything that isn't stamped with his approval.
>>
>>183695426
sorry you think that way, didn't mean to come off that way, Naganuma is by far one of my favorite artists and I listen to his work religiously on the regular

They didn't do that though. Jim Sterling did. That's what's so ironic and frustrating observing Jim put out yet another one of these videos, he already did a

video and now he's going back on it again. No integrity.
>>
>>183695569
Dude, looks like you don't have much clue about music and are getting duped by the guy, he's terrible, I'm sorry.

Why does Unity allow assets that bad on the store in the first place?

Like there's no legitimate reason to use them
>>
>>183695638
>Is that actually him?
No, he clearly knows what he's doing, there's no way that bumbling souncloud shit is made by him.
>>
>>183695796
They don't care. I'm serious. They just don't give a fuck.
>>
>>183695379
You talk like a wide-eyed first timer who never actually worked in a project of this magnitude, honestly if I were in your team I would tell you to shut the fuck up already.
Stop boasting and being so amazed by the early development rush because people with this kind of attitude are always the first to give up once mid development comes around and it's 10x harder and slower than they expected.
>>

He makes money from shit games my dude.
>>
>>183695796
Why not allow them? Steam already showed that having no barrier of entry is the most profitable path.
>>
>>183695367
Name another person besides Jim who brought Unity pissing into the mainstream. He is really the only one to ever make a fuss about Unity and it's because he is a dumpster diver who kept eating Unity turds and exclaiming "this one has familiar wrapping, another Unity game everyone!".

Before him nobody really cared what engine was being used to make a bad game, they just wanted to laugh at the game. He seems to feel guilty in this video and excusing himself more than once for what the that guy on twitter was saying - "hey games journalist (You, Jim Sterling), thanks for ruining engines for everyone"

Guys I posted before but no one help me so I'm trying my luck again. I'm trying to make a japanese mahjong game on Unity.
I got a simple tile model and sprites for the tile's face. But how do I generate my tiles with a different texture on the front face?
I tried to look at uv-maps but that's not what I really want, is it? I have 34 different kinds of tiles, I don't want to use 34 uv-maps.

>>183695894
I'm not boasting nor being amazed, what are you reading from my posts? I know more than well that it's NOT an easy task, but I'm up to it regardless

here's an example of his JSRF style work which was on commission about a year ago, not the most amazing example and it was more or less his first foray into the genre, but he and I both know he can do much better for it in the future and he's more than capable of delivering what we're looking for

Progress:
+ Did a bunch of bugfixing and uploaded a new demo version
+ Got a checkpoint system working. When you die you teleport to the last place you saved instead of just getting a game over
+ Wrote new dialogue for all the NPCs that react to the defeat of the first boss and created new NPCs with the framework for a town rebuilding sidestory
+ Began creating enemies and items for the next dungeon and overworld segment
+ Got a better font

- Uploaded a demo version that had a major text oversight regarding the new font and accidentally left in a playtesting tool that allowed players to level up instantly
- Didn't realize this for an entire day

I'm still not sure about that. Hadn't thought about NPCs before but sounds like it could be a fun idea too.

>quick rundown
Here's the whole enchilada, friend:
/agdg/ is just one facet of the Invisible Army of anonymous alt-gamedev rallying in the public but overlooked corner of the Internet Hate Machine known as 4Chan. But what the elites don't want you to know is that these freedom fighters are making games for themselves, and thus do not bend the knee to the zionist-marxist cabal of elites running the indie scene from BEHIND the scenes at the highest levels of convention staff and private organizations pulling the strings and in the back pockets of every major investor active today. /agdg/ is a freedom-loving, decentralized collective outsourcing talent to RPG Maker and Indie playing generals, as well as operating off-site in various Discord VOIP hiveminds and back-up personnel in the failsafe half+half chan in the unlikely event of subversion or contamination. By seperating game development into discoonected splinter cells, guerilla game dev occurs under the camoflage of "nodev" and sourceposting, with canisbait while polish med students serreptitiously insert themselves into the zeitgeist and mainstream gaming media to prevent transdimensional vampire journalists from sucking the lifeforce from baby's first demos. These reptilian assholes, and I'm saying literal lizardmen or real vampires here, I'm speaking in metaphors, are trying to censor your games and limit the creation of cantraband waifus and imports to control. your. mind. And /agdg/, God bless 'em, are fighting for your freedoms and your right to wank it to any female character you want after your daily dose of Super Male Vitality®.

something I thought of, regarding the logic of those birds getting up and flying away but not all at once, in they shouldn't be on the ground in a circle like pigeons. They'd behave in a more charming way if you had a narrow ledge or a tree trunk bridge to cross, they're on it, and the player is thus motivated to cross it in one go, and all the birds fly away essentially at once. It's a more natural arrangement and behavior pattern for both the birds to be more believable and for the player to act/interact with them. Food for thought! I think they're great

the player needs to pick up a yellow key item like a golden egg or pouch or something visually similar to the birds. The player is told about this item, and you clear away birds to find the item hidden in plain sight, because they fly away and it doesnt.

UV maps define where each pixel of a texture shows up on a 3d model. Since there is only 1 type of majong block, and only 1 location where the image appears, you only need to create 1 mesh and uv that mesh once.
Then create a different texture for each symbol. Your pieces will all be using the same mesh asset with it's single UV, but you will create different instances of the mesh with different textures.

So try to do a few blocks and report back here. There looks to be 140 textures, which is way to much. The solution is to use a single spritesheet texture, but that's too advanced for someone who doesn't know the basics.

At the start of an updater.

You can also make it a function that checks if there is a collision.

You can also call a function when you detect collision, that you can override to put in different code for different entities.

Don't know much about coding.

My player's input controller is getting messy and I thought it would be a good idea to use a Finite State Machine, but from what I'm seeing FSM are used for AI (enemy or otherwise) behavior.

Is that the case? Does it make sense to use a FSM to have the different states a character might be in (idle on the ground, running, climbing a rope, falling, etc) and how it should react to to different inputs in each state?
>>
>>183684397
Probably the fastest way would be the following:
1) Make 3D models
2) Animate their moves
3) Use program to convert the camera feed to a bunch of .PNG images
4) Use image effects on the set of images to get the desired look
5) Touch up individual images that need unique visual appeal

I used this technique to make a dancing lemur game (Planet Earth Promo) for a company I worked at a few years ago.

Whole project took 2-3 weeks!

Check it out: http://appcloud.warnerbros.com/islandoflemurs/lemurleap/

>>

>So it's set to true when a collision happens
This won't work like you think it will. Physics object that are set to uncollidable never actually touch "collide" with each other. As soon as the physics engine detects a movement will result in a collision, it stops the physics object short so the collision hulls never intersect.

What happens instead is the physics engine throws out a "collided" message if two hulls were about to intersect. This collided event will let you know when two objects have effectively collided, even though their hulls never intersected.

Now if two objects can overlap, engines have "overlapBegin" and "overlapEnd" events. You can set an "Overlapping" bool to true on overlap Begin, and false on overlapEnd.

Again, no expert on 3D at all (I actually suck at it) but to me that model looks pretty good for someone with little experience and practice. Hope to see more as you keep practicing.
I know how that feels, I started this project around 2010 as an inside joke between a couple of friends and then forgot about it until you started working on Helleton, because I had a lot of fun playing it and it made me remember how much I enjoyed working on it back then and I was so fucking lost in the code that I ended rewriting most of it, but this time I commented the fuck out of everything to avoid it happening again.
I'll be struggling a lot with the balancing, so as soon as I get a demo done I'll need as much feedback as possible from different kinds of players.
Sprite work is all mine, heavily based on CVIII graphics though. Have an older gif that shows more player's animations and an enemy.
Good to know you are still here.
