Sonic is the star. He is a cool blue dude with an attitude. he is _not_ a "do-gooding" hero. I don't know what can be considered ugly for Sonic characters. Over the years, for any introduced character, I don't remember pointing to any of them and saying it's ugly. Well, I think Classic Sonic was a perfect Mickey Mouse esque design, and while I love the Adventure Sonic look, I didn't like it as much as the original.
I laughed my ass at Boom's designs, but they've grown on me a hell of a lot. Sonic's long ass legs makes sens for a runner, his scarf suits him, and I think it has a lot to do with it's the best characterisation Sonic's had in years so I'm slowly leaning more towards Boom.

For instance, look at /ink/. Whether if that general went worse over the years or not, the main thing is it ceased to exist in one point because of the lack of news after Splatoon 1 received the last patch and before Splatoon 2 got announced, not because some suspects tried to scare away posters. Actually, shitposting (or unnecessary and off-topic posts, better saying on this context) HELPS on fulfilling the life time of a general. Remember that /ink/ talked about everything related to their general, but rarely spoke anything about Splatoon a while after the game received the last patch.

A big problem with Chris was that he was shoved into the action too much. A child main character would be better sitting on the sidelines most of the time. That way, when they actually did something, it would be more meaningful.

Sonic World, Sonic Fusion (discontinued) and Sonic Advance Revamped are some fangames which I know that lets you to play a good amount of character that's at least more than just Sonic, Tails and Knuckles. You can also look for SRB2 and find wads of characters you want to use.

Despite the negative of the comics ending, I'm pretty positive. Mania & Forces both seem to show the franchise going in a good direction & if the 3D games going forward improves on the Boost formula, keeps Classic Sonic in the 2D 16-bit games, brings back Sonic's friends as playable characters for the Modern games, I'll be very happy.

I think the divide between classic and modern fans has nothing to do with the gameplay itself. Classicfags care more about raw gameplay and skill. Modernfags care more about visuals, story, music, and speed.

I think Mania is guaranteed to carry on with Classic Sonic sequels. Hopefully, Sonic Team keeps Classic out of the Modern games with them around.
Forces could result in created characters to become a permanent feature in future games depending on sales and reception. That's not really something I hope happens.
The comics being dead are a pretty big blow to places like this because if we face a drought of info like we did in 2015, then this place will die.

I'm actually looking forward to both Mania and Forces on their own, but I can't help but think the franchise is basically treading water at this point because they have no clue what to do anymore other than rehash and pander for easy sales. Sega strikes me as incredibly apathetic regarding their mascot, and while I'll probably enjoy both games, I'm not really all that optimistic about the future.

The Taxman & Stealth ports of the classic games & Before/After the Sequel are likely the reasons they're doing Mania & if 3D fangames like GHP or Utopia really take off, I could see SEGA bringing in those people to make a 3D game, one day. Iizuka didn't think Mania would get a good reception. Iizuka thought wrong.
I wonder if SEGA is thinking he's done his lot when they asked someone else to do Mania. SEGA seems to be far more open to listening to fans as of late, it may just be that after Forces and Mania drop, a reshuffle in the ranks might be considered. I imagine the Mania team will stay on a 2D route, but who would they consider for 3D if such a thing were to happen?
With all the different playstyles over the years, they'd be dumb not to only do this, but look at this and say, look, lets give other people the chance to do Sonic games, give Sumo the chance to do Transformed 2 for example.
This is a really crucial moment, we wanted Mania and Forces for years, but Mania is going to do better here. The immediate future is good, but what SEGA learns from this, if they even learn anything, is critical to what we're going to see later. Will we see these games again? We'll certainly see Mania 2 and I'm sure we'll see a repeat of Forces + new gimmick game. But will we see a continuation of games that we want? Hard to tell.
