The former I at least sort of understand, because he likely has some issues, even with minimal headcanon.

The latter makes me sad. A lot of Papyrus fans have grown really tried of him being used as a plot device to kill off, and Sans in general just being absolutely perfect next to him, so in the past half a year or so, they went into overdrive to fix that.

Unfortunately, they're basically doing the same, just with Papyrus, angsting him up to some fucking ridiculous levels (carving his bones etc), not realizing that by piling a metric fuckton of angst, they're losing the character they loved in the first place.

Mettaton's movies may have been panned by critics from time to time, but as sleeping aid, they stood unrivaled.

Sans was already snoring the night away, just about vanishing in the trademark hoodie. Papyrus and Frisk were still up, though gradually fading next to the visual and auditory eundurance test. Papyrus still managed to pay attention and be reasonably engrossed in the nonsensical events, but the same couldn't be said for the child.

Frisk bit their lip, a shiver running down their spine despite the warm set of blankets piled on both of them. They loved the brothers, they really did, and because of that, every day felt harder and harder. Every glance at Papyrus, focused solely on the movie, proved harder to bear. Sooner or later, it threatened to just spill out.

"Papyrus." they spoke up, breaking the thoughts.

"YES?" he immediately looked away from the TV, even though the climax was at hand.

"Let's... s-say you do something bad." they muttered, cheeks reddening in shame. Thankfully, the movie was having a tunnel scene, hiding at least that. "Something really bad to someone."

The skeleton kept listening, though Frisk could swear he scooted a little closer. The gesture was appreciated, and yet only made the lump in their throat larger.

"Something you could fix... and they wouldn't even know. But it was really bad and you remember it. Only you remember it." they mumbled, grabbing at the blanket till their knuckles turned white. "W-what should--"

"HUMAN, YOU'RE TRULY IN LUCK I'M HERE!" he cut in, his indoor voice mercifully subdued for the time being. "OTHERWISE YOU'D SPEND HOURS DANCING AROUND THE EASIEST SOLUTION."

Frisk perked up, unnerved by his large smile.

"JUST SAY YOU'RE SORRY!" he said. "DOESN'T MATTER IF THEY CAN'T REMEMBER. IF YOU MEAN IT, I'M SURE THEY'LL FORGIVE YOU!"

The human couldn't help a tiny scoff. It was just like Papyrus; cutting through the complicated matters of the heart with ease.

If only it really were that simple. And yet, their pounding heart suggested it was better than to continue lying.

"I'm sorry."

His eye sockets burrowed straight through Frisk and stared right into their soul. Their throat felt even tighter, their whole upper body shaking like a leaf. It was barely the whisper of a mouse, and yet he still heard it. The tiny nod forwards confirmed it, along with the unbroken smile.

"YOU ARE FORGIVEN, HUMAN."

The words felt like a caress and a whip crack at the same time. They leaned forward, look firmly aimed at anything and everything that wasn't the kind skeleton. Another tremble ran through them, when they felt his touch. A skeletal hand on top of their head, patting softly.

"THERE WE GO. SEE HOW EASY IT WAS?" he asked. He wasn't exactly sure humans liked to be petted as much as the Dog Patrol, but it was definitely worth a try. "NOW, HOW ABOUT--"

"I'm sorry."

"ALL IS FORGIVEN, FRISK." he said, unfazed. "I HOPE YOU FEEL A LITT--"

"I'm sorry."

The third made him stop. Frisk refused to look up and just kept their gaze locked downwards. Their eyes were very nearly glazed and the trembling has never ceased. They spoke without even giving him the time to respond. To them, Papyrus, Sans, the blankets, the room were barely even there. They felt the cold instead, the crunching sound fresh snow made. A figure beckoned them in the mist, arm stretched outward, inviting them closer. Yet as they approached, everything became red and once it cleared, only dust awaited them.

"I'm sorry."

A slash through the spine, sudden and unexpected.

"I'm sorry."

A punch, strong enough to break ribs.

"I'm sorry."

A cruel answer to kindness.

"I FORGIVE YOU."

Their reply was muffled by his embrace, as Papyrus gently pulled them closer. Every time they spoke, he replied, offering absolution to every admission. Back and forth they conversed, late into the night, joined together on their tearful litany of misdeeds.

I wonder when Sans/Papyrus will show up, if at all. The way things are going it looks like resets only warp time inside the barrier. That's why Chara is 30 years older while it's been 100 years on the surface. If that's the case, then a lot of monsters either haven't been born or will be far younger than shown in the game.
