/egg/ - Engineering Games General - Formerly /svgg/

This is a blue board which means that it's for everybody (Safe For Work content only). If you see any adult content, please report it.

The thread is dedicated to all games about building machines and systems out of blocks, in space or otherwise. Also, all these games are ded. Only ded games may join, otherwise they must have their own thread.
Whether or not a game belongs in /egg/ is a case by case matter, however games that would belong in /svgg/, space voxel games general, are automatically considered /egg/

WebM for physicians:
>gitgud.io/nixx/WebMConverter.git

List of currently known and vaguely not as dead /egg/ games (this list is not fully inclusive and if you think a game might belong here, feel free to ask):
>Algodoo
>Avorion
>Besiege
>Chode - Children of Ded Earf
>Empyrion - Galactic Survival
>Factorio
>From the Depths
>Garry's Mod
>GearBlocks
>Homebrew - Vehicle Sandbox
>Infinifactory
>Intersteller Rift
>KOHCTPYKTOP: Engineer of the People
>Machinecraft
>REM
>Robocraft
>Robot Arena 2
>Scrap Mechanic
>SHENZEN I/O
>Space Engineers
>SpaceChem
>StarMade

Games that are definitely not /egg/:
>Minecraft
>The general that quite literally cannot be named. The Mexican scam artist one. With the shitposters. Fuck off.
>Hearthstone, found in the hearthstone general, /hsg/, not in this general.

Information about these games, such as where to get them if they're not on steam, trailers, /egg/ conquered/hosted servers, and other shit can be found in this pad:

I've always wondered this and Im'm hoping someone can help me figure this out.

Are there diminishing returns from the weapons in robocrap? Some have max fire rate of 4 or 6 ans others need 8 guns to fire in volley. are the cheaper guns as good at 2000 cpu or what?

I'm trying to figure out how to build my robo for max damage

Background: There was a SENT for Garry's Mod, a cactus that jumped around at random shouting "CACTUS." There was another that hunted players down and smashed into them at light speed.

Dont feel sorry for them. Their game had a chance to be the next big thing, and pull in millions of players and $$$. But the lead devs pissed it all away with their own incompetence.

If it were managed properly by some people with common goddamn sense it would have been insanely popular.

Honestly have no idea why they have so much trouble with this. Even being as colossally retarded as I am, I managed to at least make a craft of any weight be somewhat controllable, regardless of weight distribution. At the very least they don't spin out on the slightest acceleration.

Perhaps its the physics tick? Gravity, maybe? Honestly can't tell. Really wasn't difficult.

Only thing I can think of is that they legitimately think that wheels should behave like they depict them.

Bus of eggineers drive through scrapyard, hits a mine, physics do their magic and surviving players have to cobble together whats left to fend off the horde of kill bots, using the dessicated corpses of their fellow man as bait.

Or something.

Wouldn't it be possible to replace current passive reentry ablation shields with active ones?
Ones that used very high voltage (10-100kV) to heat up and ionize the air around them, expanding it and creating a cushion of plasma between the craft and the compressed air. Of course, that plasma would also be fucking hot, so it'd probably need some cooling itself.
>>
>>173498194
But for what purpose? It would cost less to have a simple ablative ceramic layer at that point. And since it failing would require a passive system to avoid the craft blowing up, you might as well ditch the active one and go full passive

That a perfect question for the creators of:

It's not about achieving anything, it's about the challenge.
>>
Will a programming language or AI ever be developed in which you can type what you want to the computer in plain English, and have it translated to work fine within a game's code?
>>
>>173507124
>c++
I still can't understand why people say it's bad since is pretty much c but expanded, maybe it's because i have only made babby tier programs.
>>
>>173507296
Because it doesn't have a trash collector like Java, for example.

Shit's bound to have memory leaks all over the place unless you design it thoroughly before you start writing the code itself.
>>
>>173507452
But isn't java also bad for different reasons?
>>
>>173507212
So, in essence, a natural language UI with general AI behind it to interpret the context?
Guess it /could/ work without AI, it'll be less flexible, but it should do the trick.
>>
>>173507548
>>173507452
Yeah, Java was the original platform for Minecraft and they completely abandoned that once they reached a certain amount of content due to memory problems. So either it has inherent problems or they're at least easy to cause.
>>
>>173507902
The problem with Java is memory usage. You can't optimize it anymore after a certain point and there's more leeway on other languages, although they require more effort and lines of code to run as well as a Java based program.
>>
>>173508046
In other words, JavaScript and Java are babby's first programming languages because everything you need to make a semi-complicated program is already there.

You can do a lot more with other languages, but Java is so simple so it's a good choice as a designing language which you can later translate into C++ or whatever.
>>
>>173507296
it would be fine if it was
>c but expanded
but sadly they cut a lot of more advanced parts of c before expanding. I used to think c was a subset of c++ when early in my studies, now i try to stay away from c++ plus I have never gotten into the whole vector shite and 15 additional libraries for simple operations
>>173507452
lol pls, GC is one of the problems, not solutions, see >>173508046

>>173508565
It means that if you're new to coding in general, start with Java and move on to C++ when you know how everything works. On the long run, C++ is very useful to learn, but basic program logic etc. are more easily understandable with Java.
>>
>>173508770

on top of that
>JavaScript and Java are babby's first programming languages

>>>/out/

thruth is: java is so streamlined and has so many safety nets it's painful to work with if you know your shit
imo people should be either taught just 1 high level language for a codemonkey positions (with no sci. title) or they should be dragged through most of them, starting from C and assembly, only to reach higher-leveled later. That way if you wanted to go work on microcontrollers or apis for cpus/networking you can, but if you go for some fancy oop, you still know how it's made underneath (though you don't have to reinvent the wheel)
People that are taught high-levels first, then dive deep into C-territory usually make shit code and rarely can understand how things are working under the hood
my alma mater almost does it the right way

I agree with you on the rest of the post, although to be able to teach a person that much, it would require coding lessons from elementary school onwards. So unless you're a coding geek by nature, it's gonna take more than 3 years to learn all this and be able to use it fluently.

Though some countries have already started teaching kids how to code from age 10 and upwards, so maybe we'll see a bright future full of coders.

For base logistics, we've got conveyors, sorters, alternating conveyors, refineries, stockpile machines, etc etc. You can refine your resources and sell them, or you can throw them all in a stockpile and craft your own blocks out of them instead of buying them from the greedy fucks back on Earth. Additionally, there's an, albiet simple, power management system, which you need to generate repair and bubble shields, and you have multiple ways to generate power. And theres mobile refineries and stuff so you don't have to have a static base, but you dont unlock those blocks until later in the game. All in all, nothing compared to factorio, but still bretty autistic.

a "pure" split barrel railgun would definitely be viable, but considering how much other shit is on that specific railgun other than just the rails they might as well have it closed up to better protect the rails and the projectiles.

if it's explained with "well it's a bare bones split barrel railgun because it weighs the ship down less and we are kind of poor" i can accept it but this railgun is clearly just split because it's frickin cool and shit

we can get things up there just fine but we can't get to other solar systems any other way than to send giant colony ships or invent some way to induce suspended animation, meaning that for the thing we can do right now we need to make MASSIVE ships, which takes a lot of things to get up there just fine which is why an elevator would be neat

Problem with this orbital ring is decay of its orbit over time and fatigue of the materials, constantly heating up and cooling down. Not to mention the fact you'd be able to hit it with a fucking f15 using a slightly modified missle.

Orbit decay would likely be something tended to with regular maintenance, material wear would also be a constant maintenance challenge. However a structure like that would indeed be an easy target. Would best be built in a remote location with military fortifications. It would practically be considered a national border.

The CHoDE dev hasn't abandoned it either, our current patch schedule seems to be one major update every other month, and hotfixes spread throughout those months. >>173544587
You could just design it to burn up in atmosphere, so if it collapses or is somehow de-orbited segments of it can either parachute down or simply burn up during re-entry. Same thing for a space elevator, you'd use explosive charges to split the falling tether into multiple segments which would then deploy parachutes. Nanotubes or graphene tethers wouldn't have to be very thick or heavy, so the damage they'd cause if they fell into populated zones would probably be interfering with traffic. The transit pods are already spaceproofed and would include days+ of supplies for exactly such an emergency, if they're too low and bellow the snap they could re-enter like a capsule, if they're higher up they'd just be orbiting, if the pod is climbing the tether than it could probably continue to do so or be recovered by the hub station in the center of the elevator.

Skyhoods and space elevators are completely feasible projects and could be done if faggots would get their shit in order and be willing to shell out perhaps 60-80 billion dollarydoos. We waste enough money on useless government programs in one year to build a space elevator with full redundancies.

It's just a plain normal motor, except overengineered a little. The magnetic coupling is an interesting idea, and could help with damage related to sudden breaking, but otherwise it's just a normal motor hooked up both as a motor and as a generator. Hell, the magnetic coupling could result in a loss of performance at higher torque. He didn't even use a Halbach array for the stator (at least, the diagram sure as hell didn't show one). I bet the faggot even uses air core windings.

Gears can be used to change the rotation rate from whatever is spinning them, into a lower or higher rotation rate. In the gearing this thing is in, it reduces it so much that it would take 11 million (or whatever it is) rotations on the input crank to equal 1 revolution of the output gear

Not him, but I can offer some insight on why this might not happen until nick does a total reboot on his clusterfuck of a backend.

Unity 4 is a clusterfuck, especially when it comes to physics. Those turrets are physics based, and every time you add on a rigid body attached to another with anything other than a solid weld, you're running an entire order of magnitude slower calculations, rather than just instancing the bodies within their own systems and just making the base weigh more.

Unity 5 is a lot better about this kind of shit and allows for a lot more optimizations and fuckery to be done. Nick is sticking with Unity 4 because he has a fucktonne of hacks done especially for FtD that make everything work. He's tried upgrading before, but that didn't go very well.

When I increased its thrust by another 30% (that's a total of 1700 now) it decided to take off and fly away. Gotta improve the aerodynamics to keep it on the ground, or just angle the thrusters downwards to keep the nose down

Missile launch pads have an "up" direction that is not overly apparent, use a (missile connector or ai connector to show you it with an arrow). All missiles seem to launch forward and slightly up from their gantry, based on the orientation of the launch pad.

Ejectors will add 70m/s straight forward, or in up/down/l/r based off the launch pad orientation.

Getting things to move is easy when you use a mod that lets you punch any number in the block values

Obviously I can still make perfectly functional aircraft and stuff without that kind of mods, but you're not going to push something to mach 6 with vanilla thrust values

Imagine soda in space
Due almost entirely of the surface tension of the water in the soda, a ball would form.
Bubbles in the liquid are forced to the surface of the ball by this same tension.

That said, the surface tension the liquid feels is much weaker than that the gravity it would feel on Earth, so the bubbles would move slower.

Give me a game where you're in charge of designing your country's guns, tanks and airplanes in WW2, and your enemy is given builds from other player's playthroughs or are procedurally generated. You're not in charge of diplomacy--just given a budget depending on how well the country is doing economically and told to win the country the war.

Zirconium copper does nothing, conventional guns can do the same thing for much lower cost per weapon thanks to their laser accuracy. Ammo cost is several times higher but that's made up for by the fact that the ammo actually hits the target.

you can kinda do that in ftd, theres already a mode/campaign where all tech and weapons are limited to pirate era stuff. and you could make youre own world map and factions to fight and such.

It's a dream i had of a game as a kid.

It's for all intents and purposes Robocraft and yes i'm probably the most bummed out about robocraft person you can find, except with a little more demanding build system (you have to put down an engine and a transmission to get wheels to work etc). It's played on a large scale with 32 vs 32 players as a maximum, with two teams duking it out for control over two tiny planets orbiting eachother. One team would start on the one planet, and the other team would start on the other planet, meaning you have to fight over land, sea, air and space all in one big battlefield.

How advanced your robot is dictates how often you get to respawn as it takes exponentially much longer to respawn the bigger your robot is; however, before you join a game you're able to select 3 of your bots that you can then choose from whenever you respawn

One of the key elements of this game would be that one of the modules you can fit on to your robot is a "spawn pad", a huge and heavy block that lets you act as a respawn point for other players but also painting a giant target on you. You could for example be an airborne carrier slowly flying around trying to stay alive while dropping tanks to assault facilities.

On the planets are capturable facilities that act as spawn points and help you in various ways. Refineries spawn boxes (that are very heavy and require you to fit a certain module to pick up that is, again, very heavy) that you can transport to other facilities to activate their special abilities. Factories give your team a bunch of respawn tickets when fed a box. Labs give your team tech resources which are needed to respawn bots with more advanced modules. Fortresses have heavy defenses and project a large hemispherical shield for a couple minutes when fed a box, and are the final point of defense for a team.

Once a team loses all its fortresses or has 0 respawn tickets for a whole minute, it loses.

no, that's not how you do shit, you make 0 tickets = instalose, but you count them differently
battlefield 2 didn't play the later shit did tickets good: you die, you don't lose a ticket, you can be revived at no cost, but you respawn at base = your team loses 1 ticket
waiting for a whole minute is senseless, waiting at all is senseless. look at how squad has fucked it up. you never want people to wait in the game, they should play (one way or another)

>>

>>
>>173766178
The more information you provide, the easier it is to help.
This always applies, regardless of the topic.

For example, it'd be piss-easy to solve your problem if you were to provide a blueprint string.
But with what you provide, I've no idea of where you're fucking up. For all intents and purposes, you might be too dumb to calculate an average using an arithmetic combinator.
Depending on how you want to do it and unmentioned limitations, your project is between 'babby's first' and 'turboencabulator' in terms of difficulty.
>>
>>173771087
other option is to stop respawns when tickets reack 0, but leave alive players on the field, so they have a chance to wipe out the enemy, but it'll just end with 1 guy hiding somewhere or afking and everyone else will be ded and furious
enemies would be mad as well, the "hunt the last eldar webway gate"
unless you can give players something to do when ded. I personally think it's better to have little to no respawn time and the travel time or construction of next vehicle be the gate that keep them from reentering fight, but it's always an option to let them do shit with base/map while ded

>>173771131

>>
>>173773286
Chode autism on everything is mandatory, I don't just want a generic drill part for my mining system, I want a 25 cm radius 5 meter long boron drill bit with a full twist every 5 cm and grinding protrusions 2.5 cm long and made of vanadium chromium steel. Every single component would need to have this level of autism.

Sounds like you want to play this new game that just came out then!
It's called Real Life, is like Sim Life but waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay better!
No subscription fees, all the detail you might ever want and it's also a MMO with a dedicated server and near zero latency!
The market system is even more detailed than EVE's
>>
>>173773286
Not familiar with aurora and not a fan of chode sliders. Anyone can manipulate sliders it's not as autismo as ftd weapons imo.

If you want a larger caliber in chode you just move a slider. In ftd you need to add parts that make the weapon physically bigger and probably add more parts to compensate for the additional heat, recoil etc which require more room and so on.
>>
>>173773621
In Chode you have to worry about barrel composition, length and ticc so that it doesn't break after firing a single shot
With coilguns you have also to worry about the projectile's casing, magnetic saturation, number of coils, ticcness of the coils themselves, etc.
Also making the radiators because heat doesn't magically disappear, unless you glued a certain idiot to the reactor with lots and lots of heat resistant epoxy but those are in short supply.

Mayybe both? Blocks that in turn have sliders?
>>
>>173773847
It's still more of a spreadsheet problem with chode where ftd has the spreadsheet element combined with a 3 dimensional puzzle.
>>
>>173774282
As i said, both thing
Each block can in turn be tweaked with sliders, this block is ceramic, this other block is steel, this piece of barrel is titanium alloy, this other too but different thickness etc.

Right

I've never actually used the circuit network besides a direct inserter-chest one so I'm probably doing something terribly retarded here but I don't understand why it's not working.

First all chests are taken and divided by 6, which works.

Then the mean (green square signal) is sent to the decider, which checks for every input and compares it to the mean (green square). On the pic I realized the chests might need to be connected as input in the decider but even when I added then it didnt work.

Then the output would be sent to the inserter (0 or 1) and it would work.

What am I missing here?
