Avorion has woefully bad shipbuilding, at least for me. I get it, that some may like it, but it's all the things I don't want in my spessgaem.
Skywankers has some promise, but faguette won't meet our standards (nothing will, but that's a different discussion). Cool that it has logic gates, but it'll fail when it comes to engineering like abortion, still can be fun trucking game.
Dick unibers - this one I'm cautiously optimistic about, not because of the "voxel EVE" marketing, but how they describe the idea for multiplayer-sever offload. They seem way more competent than keen, even though I haven't seen their game yet. They will ultimately fail, because physics will be subpar. Question is will they die after a while, leaving a comfy warm ded husk of a world, or will it be a stillborn.
I want building guns from parts supposedly.

I'm no magic electronic word book physician but I have an idea for stable infinite speed in Spengies.

For external frames of reference, every object traveling at a havok unstable speed has a simplified collision box drawn around it and a line drawn in the direction of thrust.

Any object approximately one minuet ahead intersecting the line based on trajectory and velocity has an impact precalculated based on a low rez version of the collision boxes of both objects then to compensate for the lower definition impact a randomized volumetric sphere of destruction is applied based on mass and speed of the impacting object


For internal frames of reference over an unstable speed, anything inside the collision box is treated as separate from the game map and stationary from it's own "dimension" until it slows down or impacts something. The game map is projected to it but only the collision box is interacting with the map at speed. To simulate acceleration gravity planetary gravity is applied against the direction of thrust proportional to thruster speed.

some time ago i proposed to them almost the exact same solution, but with slight refinement (a vector and a cone for future collisions), on top of that they could make hyperspace travel (not jumping, but going into dimension of yellow thunders) where everything is scaled differently, so 1m there is 1km normalspace, making possible even faster travel, better ftl than jump and hyperspace battles, where if you don't have a hypersail, or some hyperstabilization on grid it immediately exits to normalspace (imagine getting part of ship blown off, then it immediately vanished because it can't maintain hyperspace presence)

Missiles, lasers and crams really got kicked in the dick. They were already pretty easy to counter, now that different shield types don't interfere with each other those attacks might be useless.

When you're going 250m/s in an evasive pattern you can basically ignore cannons, so you can put all your shield energy into telling the only things that threaten you to fuck off.

The latest revision of my anti-laser missile, cut down the warhead to 25 grams of platinum and 250 mg of nitrocellulose. It's not a very powerful explosion, but at the speeds it gets up to its plenty to rip apart radiators and tear through armor. I also renamed it from the Krakatoa to the Tunguska, since it's more of a kinetic that uses an explosive charge to spread its payload than a proper flak.

So I thought we could make our own weapons in machinecraft, well looks like this isn't the case. So I figured out how to place lasers in space, so it would look just like one of my japanese animes.(pic related)

Well it looks this way client side, but not server side. But it turns out damage is calculated CLIENTSIDE. So you can make your own weapons, it's just that no one else can see them.

Oh and damage is calculated CLIENTSIDE. This is bad.

These are the effects of my redesigned missile. It now has two warheads, one has a very low explosive/casing weight ratio to concentrate the shrapnel onto a very small area and pierce armor more effectively, the other has a much higher explosive/casing weight ratio so the high-angle fragmentation can tear off radiators. This was 20 missiles iirc.

It's mostly trial and error combined with a ship purpose built for it. People have done it in as little as 2 months, 14 days with multi-gigawatt MPD ships with 400+ km/s of Delta V. This was the destroyer. It was the main support ship throughout the rest of my early game. The guns weren't very useful, but they were just there to harass the enemy while waiting for the torpedoes to cross 10 something kilometers. It also had an AA laser to deal with my squirrel problem. The missiles were pretty much useless, too slow to deal with aircraft and I would keep this thing as far as possible from ships since it could not survive a close-in brawl for long. They were alright for airships I guess.

Putting aside arbitrary weight limit bonuses, bipeds would only have an advantage over wheels if it were some tall Gekko-like thing that could step and hop out of the way of danger. This reflex would need to be automated because there's no way a guy standing at the edge of the arena could coordinate the evasion, especially in free-for-alls. A scanning LIDAR beneath the torso would work for sensing, especially if it can see a few meters out.

If you can manage that, you have something moderately more advanced than the Boston Dynamics bipedal Tachikoma thing. At that point it's too expensive to lose, though.

I've owned Spengies since before multiplayer was introduced, but just started playing it for the first time over the last couple of days.

I decided to start by building a large grid ship in creative to get familiar with the games mechanics. It's probably 90% down now, just a couple of things I want to refit and then getting cameras / sensors / etc installed and everything configured.

Once I have everything working the way it should, I want to take it directly into a PvP fight.

I'm expecting to get completely thrashed or fail in some less than spectacular way because I designed my ship totally blind to the realities of combat in this game, but I want to try.

What do I have to do to get my ship from creative single player into a multiplayer survival server? I assume having any mod-blocks on it is a no-go, unless the server has the same mods installed.

Save it as a blueprint, then load that blueprint into a projector. It will create a holographic version of the ship [make sure it's attached to something though, like the projector itself]. Then you weld up the holographic parts and turn them into real blocks

PvP in Spergies consists of:

1 ) whoever runs out of dakka first takes on ramming maneuvers
2 ) developing completely overkill station-launched weapons that the target has no chance of stopping

Yeah, I know that it's a pretty shit design functionality wise. It always happens with my builds because I tend to just start at the front and build backwards without any kind of plan.

But yes, I usually do empty bulges on either side of the hull (which you can see taking shape in pic) and then thicc interior walls behind these bulges. The turrets are behind this interior bulkhead and are typically pretty survivable.

Is spengies a dying game? Or still growing? If capital combat will never happen and the community is already moving away to other games, I'm not going to waste any more time playing it.

FPS drops are more client-side so if you have a particularly beefy system you should be mostly fine, but server performance gets kicked in the dick. Server simspeed drops dramatically, and client simspeeds drop to match. Even the best of servers are subject to shitting the bed, back when Warbros was running we had a handsome little box getting preferential networking and the serb population still died because of performance issues.

There might be a server like that, but I doubt anyone here plays on it. Pour best bet would possibly be to look into creative servers where people aren't dicks.

The only standard ship types that ever serve any true function are utility welder/grinder ships, industrial-scale miners and ship printers, defensive structures like turret/observation satellites with frequent monitoring perhaps set up a laser antenna and a programming block to get active ammo readings or people approaching your base, and perhaps haulers for large cargoloads or just packing up all your shit for a move.

ShipVShip only works under gentleman's agreement, WMDs only work if you know your target's location, and there is literally no way to stop offline raiding. Spengies is best played as an autism aesthetic buildan game, and is the comfiest in survival with friends, but performance issues have basically driven 95% of this thread away from it.

We hope one day the Marek will be gassed and deliver us from this hell.

Alright, so I'm pretty well equipped to avoid client side issues, but server side seems inescapable. I'll have to start looking around for a server that's close to what I'm after. I was hoping to find a survival mode server, because creative just removes too many mechanics. I'm not a big fan of spending a bunch of time gathering and processing resources or welding, but resource management should be important on the ship scale.

Being able to carry enough ammo, having conveyor systems in place that can deliver ammo to turrets even if some parts of the network take damage, air supply and compartmentalized interior design for damage control, having enough fuel to not run out mid-fight, etc. Remove those considerations and designing a ship becomes far less challenging and interesting.

That was me trying to design a cargo ship capable of carrying full containers from planet-to-planet. For getting up to speed, or for the transition from surface-to-space, Hydros are fine, but they're incredibly bulky and have short flight times. I could actually see them used quite well for a mothership-type build, moving large distances only periodically.

Hey, as long as I make adjustments to my old bots they all still functioned, even after they nerfed literally every single thing about some of them.

The hardest one to accomodate was the single plasma bots I made, but eventually I found ways to thruster about and yet still have room for an array of plasmas.

And the glass megabot was just so great that it was still good after they nerfed glass, nerfed megashields, nerfed megashields again, nerfed wheels, nerfed this, nerfed that.

It's starting to take shape in bits and pieces.

The problem is that the main turret guns don't look like a big enough calibre for the size of the ship.

Last post for a while.

I plan to have it bulge again behind the fifth turret (which is the second high one you can see in this picture - the fourth is almost fully concealed) and that's where the "castle" will go, as well as a pyramid of secondary armament.

I'm going to adjust the secondary broadside you can see here running down the side, it looks too repetitive and doesn't have enough visual interest. I'm not sure what I'm going to do with it though. Maybe increase the height of each second turret and move it back a bit to try and create a sort of up-down-up-down texture instead of just being a line.

Reee, make me start up the game again to answer your questions.

Only two secondaries are on the ship at the moment and I haven't set up their ammo, but IIRC from testing the tower cannons have about 60rpm @ 200mm with 4.5k kinetic damage and 36AP and the quadruple cannons have a 75rpm fire rate @ 100mm with 250 kinetic and 750 HE and 8AP.

Missiles are either
Short range AA: short thruster, 2 fuel, 2 fins, frag, HE, infra-red seeker
Extreme long range: Variable thruster @ speed 500 and zero ramp time, 3 fins, 4 fuel, a one-turn, 4 HE, 2 frag, and a laser designator receiver
Torpedo: 3 propellers, 3 fuel tanks, a one turn, 9 HE, a ballast tank, and a sonar. Torpedoes each have one ejector.

From left to right (intended role):
Tower cannon (mincing ships with sheer volume of fire)
Quadruple cannon (anti-small and gutting ships that have had their armour blown off)
Short range AA (guess)
Torpedo rack (making castle ships sink)
Long range missile (for declawing bad guys (especially planes) before they get close enough to hurt me back). I will be putting huge banks of these on the ship as well outside of the piddly little two I put on the front basically just for aesthetics.

And in the back, my hueg gun, with 3 times 15,000 kinetic and 25,000 HE @ 4rpm. I could have made it smaller but why bother when you can just make the ship bigger?

I can't speak for most zippy fast mover makers, but mine trend towards sniping from 2 km with lasers. Ain't no outranging that with kinetics.


I'm actually fairly proud of how I managed to make stock AI keep the port side to the enemy and always maintain range against anything that's not clocking it at 150m/s+.

What is the biggest ship you've ever made in chode? This thing carries 2'200'000 drones. It's out of date though, the drones have gotten lighter since then so it could carry more, and I completely phased out my beloved micro-drone line that I've been using since I first started in favor of laser armored missiles and laser point defense drones.

I honestly just send an equal amount of missiles to intercept. You get so many for that mission that it's entirely viable to intercept everything they throw at you and still have a surplus to just chuck into their orbit for RIP time.

It is a fucking pain though because they will try to change course tp evade intercept, so you wind up having to recalculate after every turn pass.

I suppose. If you're talking about Iron-age energy, stack some solar panels and Dont-Worry-About-It until you get titanium.

Otherwise, idk. I build really small, lean ships where everything under hull panels is generation/engines/shields. It's good to set your engines and shields up and then generate roughly twice what is needed for that.

I generally don't even fuck with batteries, and instead use that space and resource for more generation than I'd ever need.

If you aren't around enough titanium to build enough generation, just move toward the center until it becomes more common. The difficulty increase this type of thing would cause is negligible at this point unless you're playing on fuckin European Extreme. When I start new games, I go >Solar panel wafers until I find titanium for power and a minimal integrity field> acquire a titanium mining turret> Jump until I hit naonite for shields, and THEN worry about finalizing a build. But that is a bit risky and rushed.

As far as thrusters, that's basically it, yeah. Normal thrusters are omnidirectional but also have less efficiency in a single axis. Directional, per last time I played the game, worked bi-directionally (so forward/back, or up/down) and have more efficiency for their size if you're only using them for that specific axis.

It's advisable to use directional thrusters placed specifically for roll/pitch/yaw/braking, instead of fuckloads of omnidirectional thrusters.

Resource rarity is pretty much solely calculated based on your distance to the center. SOmetimes you get lucky and find more rare resources farther out, but if you just move closer to the center, your chances go up every time.

Up to 75k blocks now. I think I might add two more turrets to the back to make it longer in the direction of the arrow, or otherwise the "castle bulge" (the bit inside the red box) will be too close to the stern and it will look too back-heavy. I'm also going to redo the bits circled in red to make them look more bulgy and less angular.

The superstructure on top of the red box is going to be a pyramid of turrets, but I didn't realise quite how large that space was going to be so I could potentially fit in some main-gun sized turrets there as well, probably an additional six turrets, three on each side. They wouldn't be identical to the ones that I've already got, but they should be similar in capability. They might have reduced traverse depending on how much I need to squeeze them in though.

Depending on how the castle turns out I might make the stern turrets just a continuous step down from highest to higher to high to medium to low, instead of what I did in the front where it goes low medium high medium high.

Eh.

It's starting to get pretty laggy, but only while I'm actually building. If I'm not placing blocks it runs fine.

In reality, code is only as powerful as the actuators it controls. Those actuators are made available through engineering tasks other than programming. Tasks like circuit design and power supply design could have interesting equivalents in magic. However, most of /tg/ either has some CS background or wishes they did. Of course they'd latch onto programming.

Yeah and I imagine there would be a lot of issues in games where some players had shitty toasty CPUs that couldn't handle the bigger machines brought by other players

But fuck it would be so cool. You'd be able to test your machines against something stronger than some dumb AI soldiers armed with bow and arrow, and considering how differently all my planes perform (in acceleration, turnrate, etc) I think air combat would be really fun

Also I don't know how they could prevent people from using machines made using mods that let you punch any ridiculous number in the thrust value of a flying block or the explosive charge of firework rockets, since those are saved straight to the .bsg file which is what the game would load in a multiplayer session. And I gotta admit the majority of my planes rely on that kind of stuff

Yeah but if you let people do whatever it would turn into a shitfest of overpowered bullshit

The rockets on this plane can destroy or disable the target in one hit but they also have fairly limited range and speed the plane can even outrun them once it reaches around 690 kph so I have to shoot from the right distance and at the right angle that will bring the rockets as close as possible to the target when they explode, since they don't explode on contact and they have a pretty significant drop. I'd say that would be a fair weapon to use in a multiplayer match, but you could make much more OP stuff if you wanted. Hell if any and all mods were allowed you could even have tracking missiles.
