Don't Hate, Ventilate
Previous jej: >>171305009

The thread is dedicated to all games about building machines and systems out of blocks, in space or otherwise. Also, all these games are ded. Only ded games may join, otherwise they must have their own thread.
Whether or not a game belongs in /egg/ is a case by case matter, however games that would belong in /svgg/, space voxel games general, are automatically considered /egg/

WebM for physicians:
>gitgud.io/nixx/WebMConverter.git

List of currently known and vaguely not as dead /egg/ games (this list is not fully inclusive and if you think a game might belong here, feel free to ask):
>Algodoo
>Avorion
>Besiege
>Chode - Children of Ded Earf
>Empyrion - Galactic Survival
>Factorio
>From the Depths
>Garry's Mod
>GearBlocks
>Homebrew - Vehicle Sandbox
>Infinifactory
>Intersteller Rift
>KOHCTPYKTOP: Engineer of the People
>Machinecraft
>REM
>Robocraft
>Robot Arena 2
>Scrap Mechanic
>SHENZEN I/O
>Space Engineers
>SpaceChem
>StarMade

Games that are definitely not /egg/:
>Minecraft
>The general that quite literally cannot be named. The Mexican scam artist one. With the shitposters. Fuck off.
>Hearthstone, found in the hearthstone general, /hsg/, not in this general.

Information about these games, such as where to get them if they're not on steam, trailers, /egg/ conquered/hosted servers, and other shit can be found in this pad:

guess you could replace the rubber pads on tank tracks with tube rollers?
>>
>>171638657
Not actually rollers, that was the best example of what I'm going for.
Two sets of wheels on either side of the thingies the gears on the treads go into, powered by stronk electric motors.
>>
There's no way in hell you could get any power from the engine to all of those in any manner resembling efficiency. Electric motors would probably be the most feasible if all of those are going to be moving, but you're not going to get any significant torque out of that.

No matter which way you slice this, you're not going to get more speed or traction than wheels or treads.

The major achievement of that thing is the size. The technique is poor, horrible studding, the airplanes are ugly, the AWACS looks insultingly bad, the 75 is a sticker rather than using bricks, the comms stack is literally the same block stacked 20 times, and the dudes running around aren't even properly suited/matched.

But hey, it's a big lego aircraft carrier, so that is kinda cool. Judging from the parts, this was built about 10 to 15 years ago, so some things were a bit more limited, especially in the SNOT department. And, for what it's worth, it's compatible with the general LEGO product line.

5/10, it's big.

no john, you are the robots
this is absolutely amazing, but I don't think we should make them worse, smoothness of movement and "appearing" normal is not the priority. I don't care how it moves, I want to work in different environments without a fault. It is does it well, but in extremly weird "robotic" way, then I'm fine with it
Bigger problem is the lack of proprioception and reactions in robots' programming. Fucking hell, robocoders should be allowed only C and after few years of training they should be introduced to agent-programming, nowadays it's "oh i need a visual tool, or I won't understand what i'm doing"

There is a reason we don't move like we have binary switches for muscles, and it aint aesthetics, sunshine.

I think smooth motion is the key to first emulating, and then surpassing biological nonsense. Otherwise you're wasting an insane amount of effort and energy correcting for over corrections because the movements aren't smooth enough.

Also, when I'm older I want to cut my legs off at the hip and be able to walk again without issue. Janky robotics is not good for the spine.

Hey buddy, they're a lot better if I can just replace an actuator with a pair of pliers and a screwdriver. Right now to replace a knee you need a few hours of surgery and it'll never be anywhere near as good.

You can't jump over buildings or whatever if you don't have the supporting structure for it. It'll just break something else. If not your legs, your hips, then your spine, then your neck, then your brain, then your eyes, and so on. Force transfers to the weakest link.

in this field i agree, you are right. if we talk about bionics then imitate as much as you can, but this is robots we are talking about. and in the field of prosthetics there is little problem, just wire it correctly to the flesh, then you are just controlling it. a transition period might be needed to adapt for strength / speed of new limbs, but it's out brain, not controllers in the legs. btw currently there's a prosthetic for a whole leg (1, this is important) that can make almost perfect walking movement (albeit slow), even walking on stairs. 0 connection to nerves, but your healthy leg has a transmitter in the sole and tell other leg what to do
on top of that the fuckers are imagining factories, construction, deep water works made by humanoid robots, where:
a) humanoid form rarely is the best / even useful
b) smooth movements are not always best

I am not against heuristics and fuzzy logic in robots, but making movement smooth or follow fractal paths when it doesn't have to is ridiculous

>>
>>171678971
it's not even that. I wish it was just me.
So I went back into creative and spawned a small fighter with 2 miniguns and a rocket. These are the possibilities:

1. Enemy ship doesn't even shoot back.
2. Enemy ship one-shoots me even while I'm at 300m/s doing a perpendicular fly-by

If I can get close to a ship in spengies and hold the fire button for 2 seconds, that's enough to take out ANY gun turret. 5 seconds and the whole hull is gone

>>171679083
I use both vanilla and modded, but I think the problem is the opposite. The fucking weapons are too overpowered. A spray of bullets disintegrates light armor like it was cardboard

You can shoot anywhere with tiny bullets and in seconds there is a hole 10x10 meters in the hull. It's shit.

I'm just giving up and going back to playing actual games. Fucking abortion was a letdown as well.

Well to replace your spine you'd need to also replace your spinal chord and possibly all of the nerves connected to it, and also ensure that it's made of a material which your muscles can anchor properly to. Tough shit to pull off, at that point it might be easier to replace the entire body rather than trying to make individual implants work with what's already there.
>>
>>171679573
>2. Enemy ship one-shoots me even while I'm at 300m/s doing a perpendicular fly-by
The velocity at which you approach has little to no impact on the accuracy of weapons (yours or your enemy's).
What does matter is acceleration, and I'm assuming you approach at constant velocity.
That translates into zero acceleration, and perfect accuracy.

Still a newbie with Space Engineers and having trouble with building a planet miner. I can't really get anything with thrusters that can overcome gravity with any sort of cargo loaded since large thrusters are too big not to get damaged while drilling. I tried making an oil rig vertical driller thing, but pistons don't go down very far at all.

My other idea was making a medium carrier with large thrusters and using a connector to attach a very small miner parasite ship, but that seems a bit on the complicated side to answer what should be a very simple problem.

Or is the game built more with a space start in mind and moving to planets after you have plenty of resources to fuck around with?

it's not 'built' for anything, it's just a mess of ideas thrown together, but the consensus is: you start on a planet and work to get off it, since it:
is stupid
is round
has harder to mine resources
hasn't got all the resources

the challenge you have to overcome is to exit the gravity well. after that you are a free being, a spaceboud, not hindered by any lack of resources you can freely unleash your creativity on enemies, since pvp is the only thing left for you now

as for the miner: 2-3 large downward thrusters, 2-3 large forward (breaking) thrusters, about 3-5 small in other directions, large cargo, connector, batteries (to taste), lotsa drills, by lotsa i mean those are going to make light of your hole/tunnel, make them wider and higher than the rest of the ship
on top of that rightclick for bigger holes for easier to navigate tunnels/shafts and to avoid stone clogging the cargo

Throughput. With that design you can only have one belt supplying all rows of boilers, instead of, say, one belt supplying each two rows of boilers (the way I've always done it)
I'm not sure how the boilers even fit on the other end there since there's not enough space for them to be lined up.
>>
>>171705906
>amount of poles and pipes to the amount of inserters obviously
That's a peculiar parameter to optimize with respect to, but regardless:
Provide picture of a reference design for comparison.
Note that the discussed build uses 8 power poles and 15 "excess" pipes for five full boiler lines.

>>171706571
As above, provide picture of a reference design for comparison.
One boiler consumes a maximum of 780kW worth of fuel, equivalent to 5.85 coal per minute, and a yellow belt transports a maximum of 800 items/minute.
This means a single yellow belt can provide enough coal for more than 136 boilers, or at least 9 full lines of 14 boilers each.
I really don't understand how where throughput is an issue in the discussed setup.

>I'm not sure how the boilers even fit on the other end there since there's not enough space for them to be lined up.
Usually this kind of boiler->boiler transfer of fuel is done by long-armed inserters, which means the steam engines fit nicely.

Currently, I am debating on how to facilitate transport of goods across the lunar surface, to refurbish/restore an abandoned prospecting camp made from prefab parts, given that there is a nanoprinter that requires base materials already on site, and a power source that requires fuel (fusion, so, helium-3 would be ace).

The thing is.

That isn't even my problem, but the players'. Still, I wonder how I would do it. And then, how I would even mask what I am doing so it's not apparant to outside observers that I am doing that.

Well, they are about an hour's drive from a rather large settlement, which is in turn connected to a space elemvapor, which is in turn conencted to a transport hub above the moon.

The operational word here is: clandestine.

They need to get resources to the camp without anyone knowing - or, at least, not knowing where it goes or that it goes there but doesn't matter to anyone. Dropping into the background of regular operations on the surface so no one has a mind to report about it with any emphasis.

Tunneling takes too long and is a lot of effort.
Fly-over drop-off in reinforced crates is a feasible solution, though. I was thinking about hacking automated transports to not log the additional cargo and make course deviations that show up as triangulation discrepancies in the log. Worst case scenario, the software gets scrubbed and reinstalled.

But then again, I was reading up on military encampments and CIA safe houses all day yesterday to identify core properties of a such a clandestine housing solution and it seems like there'sn't much that applies to lunar surfaces.

Assumption: The Earth is flat
Implied: Modern charts only picture one side
Conclusion: We don't know what is on the other side of the (flat) Earth
Thus we must explore the other side in the name of science.
I suggest a group of great scientists (not NASA, they're lying) conduct a mission to explore said "dark" side.

I kind of want to scratch-build a full canal system with like 10 locks, electric motors to generate the current (the point of those gates is that you use that weird thing in upper right to generate a current and direct the boats with the gates), etc, etc.
>>
>>171760181
That launch velocity curve at the bottom is a good one, the higher off the bottom it is the faster the flak is travelling. High velocity means it'll spread out rapidly, good for tearing radiators off ships. Low velocity means it can't overcome the velocity it inherits from the missile and just travels in a tight cone, which is good for putting a hole through armor.

>tfw I did this in another game over a year
The real problem was the limited budget.
Firepower, sensors and airframe were all set in stone, so I had to remove everything else in order to free money for more propulsion (and to otherwise cut down on drag).
This involved first getting rid of lateral thrust, which really only helped steering at very low speeds - this disadvantage was offset by splitting the main propulsion in two, and moving it outboards, thus allowing it to provide torque.
Then, the aero-based steering was redesigned. Instead of using the rudder as intended, a stabilizing fin was mounted on a turret - significantly reducing drag while improving handling somewhat.
Said redesign was later reverted to some extent: By carefully redistributing existing objects, I could completely do away with stabilizing fins, and by using the cheaper rudder, I could cram in another engine.

All in all, the plane's top speed probably doubled.
Those were the days.

Could be monoprop, which is visible to anyone who isn't blind. Could also be that the torpedo is pushed out by a mechanism that isn't quite visible. Either way it's very obviously being pushed out.

>>
>>171789485
Well there is this thing called commotio cordis, where a sudden strike to the heart disrupts the electrical rhythm of the heart. The blow needs to happen within a short 10-30 millisecond time period for this to occur. Now there exist non contact methods for measuring heart rate, typically using some form of radar. Using this we can build a machine that precisely delivers a blow within this time period. IE we have a pneumatic gun with laser range finder and noncontact heart rate sensor, that fires a golf ball at just the right time.

So there you go, no explosive traces, no poisons, no wounds, all you have to do is recover the golf ball

Well yeah. IF that worked, the gas would be contained inside the casing and you wouldn't have any sort of shockwave from the gas at all, just from the bullet. It'd be a perfect suppressor. No noise aside from a metallic clunk, no flash, nothing. Of course, it'd also provide next to no muzzle velocity since you'd get like two inches of push on many times the mass.

dynamic walking and terrain adaption is trivially easy, hell you don't even need inverse kinematics. All you need is one thing: the ability to control the torque and force of your actuators. This the secret sauce to Boston Dynamic's robots.

If you don't have this, you're fucked

So can one set applied rotor torque in spengies?

you can use easy arguments to control legs individually, in what they do to keep the walker on foot, but in a prebaked situation, you can still use sensors to adapt the feeling of it.
Pistons has unlimited power, but not unlimited strengh in its joints.
With mods, you could solve most of this issues using hinges for sturt connections and smaller connectors as shafts using pistons as actuators.
But after that, for now its just fucking arround with some scripts to make automated controls.
>>

>>
>>171856641
No it wont. I don't remember the exact algorithm, but I have been sitting on the concept for some time. It's all about rates and sequence. Inverse kinematics is the basis for it, and everything is done by varying the target coordinates for each foot in order to either hit the ground, move the tank, or adjust the tanks orientation. Simple math studded with a few derivatives or PID loops, plus some sensors. Or not, but it'll be a little slower if it has to feel for the ground.

>sensors. Or not, but it'll be a little slower if it has to feel for the ground.
will depends of the damage threshold and the reaction time in the movement, so he can absorb the initial impact with 1x1 wheels, then lock it self to the ground with landing gears and use that lock to generate more torque force without slips, and when the leaving the ground sequence starts, unlock the landing gear at the best inertial moment, but this will be just the feet, you also then need to cover various axis.
you can sit and do a fuck ton of rules in various layers using automation scripts in spengos, but you need to test them at hand too, thats why direct control is better.
as for the equilibrium, you can basically cheat, using large grid gyroscopes in a locked rotor head and play with its overrides using a stabilization script, so the chest will allways remain centered, and then the limbs do the moves and only twist it self when you command it.

>>171858814
>> gyroscopes
Here's a redpill for you to swallow, you can apply the same torque a gyroscope would apply at the feet. If you can control actuator torques then this is easy. We want torque about body, we know where foot is, from this we can calculate what the force vector should be at the foot. We can then calculate what the torques at the leg should be to obtain that force vector.

Pic related is the schema of the controller for a biped walker, virtual springs and dampers act like a suspension applying virtual forces on the frame. We translate these virtual forces into actuator torques.

>>171860252

>>
>>171864236
You don't have to 'just' set positions. You can easily set target rates of motion as well, which is a simple matter of setting up a PID loop. You could even use this loop to detect the ground by a change in velocity. The system allows for fully controlled, smooth movements.
>>
>>171866327
Force control is surprisingly robust. If you can't get friction force you are all sorts of screwed. The second we typically solved by putting rubber feet on our robots. The first, for anything except mud, the answer is use a larger force.

For mud, we add another set of legs and make our biped virtual. The force each of the biped legs applies is now translated into the net force for two legs

So, Idk if I'll get back to engineering today... Maybe some CHODE. I'm still on a serious Warband kick. I think what I'll engineer is an efficient system for training recruits into hardened warriors.
>>
>>171873058
Also, thanks for reading my blog
>>
>>171873058
>I think what I'll engineer is an efficient system for training recruits into hardened warriors
>add heroes to party
>get trainer skill on heroes
That's it.
You can now make knights out of recruits in a few days.
Not particularly interesting task, really.
>>
>>171874404
Yeah it's not particularly difficult with the Training skill, but I'm talkin about maximum efficiency. Mixing a band of about half veterans and half recruits and then grinding on bandits has given me the fastest results with all things considered.
>>
>>171874836
>but I'm talkin about maximum efficiency
With respect to what?
If you don't state limits, then villages with high relations might be your best choice.
At 100 relations, you can recruit upwards of 50 maximum rank troops.
While it relies on RNG to get the proper type, it's arguably the fastest and cheapest method - even if there's massive investments involved.
>>
>>171767747
Yeah because you build in the spyware in the case. You made that have spyware in it.
>>
>>171793657
what game
>>
>>171876793
I'm just talking about efficiency in the time it takes to make a recruit into a Nord Huscarl, or equivalent top-tier soldier.

You are right about the village thing, though I don't have the funds to support huge bands yet.

Children of a Dead Earth

It's dope shit
>>
>tfw realizing I wasted so much time on muh bus shit I dindu circuits and trains
>>
>>171877676
But see, the problem is still poorly defined.
When speaking of time, is it ingame time or the time you must spend at the keyboard?
If it's only the former, then training camps might be the fastest way, as using them is instantaneous. (if I recall correctly).

Secondly, how many troops are we talking about?
*A* recruit implies one, but I'd imagine you're more interested in a full war party from scratch, which might be anywhere between 50 and 200, depending on character build and renown.
As the number of recruits increases, I'd lean more towards using Training - which affects every single soldier in the party.

However, acquring a high-quality band of troops is one thing, as you also need to maintain them - meaning you need to deal with attrition.
Given that fresh recruits become scarce during wartime (other lords raiding, hostile villages not volunteering, distance to friendly territory), it's paramount to minimize your own casualties.
Aside from picking your fights (scouting and pathfinding are nice) and leading the troops properly, it's absolutely vital that your party has a medic (reduces casualties directly, surgery being most important) and tactics (means you'll have more troops in the fight).
Leadership is important for the same reasons as tactics, while it also lets you have quality troops in the actual battle, letting your cherries safely gulp up post-battle XP.

M&B Warband would be a fun game if high-quality troops weren't such instant-win free cards.
Once a few months have passed, AI lords are usually stuck in a perpetual cycle of spawning with recruits/footmen and then getting curbstomped.
If you're lucky, the political landscape might result in one lord getting most of a faction's holdings, and with it the money to bring up massive armies - but that's RNG.

Not if its in Disruption mode. Reflection it will. I honestly don't think it matters either way.
>>
>>171897027
I thought that maybe it would be more effective to layer a Disrupt shield over a Reflect shield, but since the shot is disrupted in a random direction there's a slight chance that it might be deflected at such an angle that it hits the Reflect shield at a slightly flatter angle. That might be a risk worth taking, though

I kind of like that they're two blocks, you can use them on their own and create some nice effects
I'd still like 'solid' ones that come in a single piece, though, as well as half-blocks
>and dont mesh with the grid textures
Now this is annoying
>>
>>171898549
It Depends (TM).
A disrupt over the reflect is better than double reflect when you've got a bad but not awful angle of incidence (See *1) or when you're dealing with a really slow shell (See *2).
A disrupt way the hell out there is good against 0-degree inertial fuses.

*1: Two shields at different angles are generally much better than two that are parallel. Angle is the god-king of shield functionality. A good angle beats everything, and having more shields at more angles is the best way to ensure a good angle. Sometimes though you just have the one way to make shit fit.
*2: Why the fuck are you getting hit by slow shells?

Besides which I can't actually build spaceships in Solidworks.

Well, I probably could. But I don't want to.

I'd just like to interject for a moment. What you’re referring to as Warbros, is in fact, /egg/Warbros, or as I’ve recently taken to calling it, /egg/ plus Warbros. Warbros is not a clan of dead astronauts unto itself, but rather another free addition of a fully dead /egg/ system made useful by the /egg/men, autists and broken coding components comprising a full thread as defined by CLANG.
Many dead game players are a modified version of the /egg/, without realizing it. Through a peculiar turn of events, the version of /egg/ which is widely used today is often called “Warbros”, and many of its users are not aware that it is basically the /egg/ system, developed by the /egg/ thread, formerly /svgg/. There really is a Warbros, and these people are using it, but it is just a clan that happens to be part of the thread they use.
Warbros is the clan: the group in the system that allocates the autist resources to the other games that you run. The clan is an essential part of the thread, but useless in the thread by itself; in /egg/ it can only function in the context of a completely dead thread. Warbros is normally used in combination with the /egg/ thread: the whole system is basically /egg/ with Warbros added, or /egg/Warbros. All the so-called "Warbros” engineering games distributions are really distributions of /egg/Warbros.

Although Africans deserve the shit-talk, claiming Primitive Technology has 'beaten' them is simply unfair if not outright false.
Frankly, the guy is well-nourished both in terms of food and knowledge - he's clearly read up on this topic.
Secondly, he is not making new developments, but rather recreating based on written documents, which're likely inaccessible to the mud-cake bakers.
Finally, the Africans are still somewhat close if not ahead, as I've yet to see PT create iron tools.

Armored skeletons and the likes sound good in a science fiction setting, but sadly IRL they would be a pain in the ass to maintain and you still need someone who would know how to maintain it readily available because you sure can't just leave that armor to rust by the roadside because sand got some bearing stuck solid or something. Also all that electronic in a single shell, don't need much more than a lot of static or bad weather to fuck things up, and lets be honest they sure won't be 100% waterproof, especially with all the moving parts required to be able to move around without the armor being a clunky piece of shit.

If they are ever deployed on the terrain, it will be for very limited support purposes and little else.

Aesthetic question: every screenshot I see has a gaudy multicolored nebula in the skybox. I hate space games where there's no *space* in space and it's chock full of asteroids and shit. For example: No Man's Sky. Space was every color *except* black!

Does Avorion have properly dark, lonely stretches between zones of activity, where you can stare out into the inky void at the small clump of pixels representing your destination?

>shiny armor

>>
>>171985862

True that, also the flesh has the advantage of softening the trauma upon the skeleton from continuous usage, helping in furthering the longevity of the skeleton. Also the flesh between the bones themselves allow for a more effective repartition of the kinetic trauma brought by direct physical contact. The body is one hell of a machine.

For some reason, this make me ponder about something : Were the giants insect of the carboniferous era really goddamn loud? Like we know how small insects tend to make a lot of sound despite their size, with one like the Cicada being especially loud, I can't imagine what kind of racket it a dog-sized one would cause.

If you can hit a target with a conventional projectile weapon, then the laser is completely redundant.
>>
>>171988823
I mean, a laser is a lot more precise than any kinetic.

Lasers seem ideal for targeting exposed systems. Drone and missile sensors, for example, maybe radiators, maybe engines.
>>
>>171988981
>I mean, a laser is a lot more precise than any kinetic
Exactly; and considering the distances involved, any hit could be considered a perfect hit.
So if the less accurate kinetic weapon can land a perfect hit, why bother with the more accurate one?
Even more so, why would you set up a highly accurate weapon that relies on the hit from a less accurate one?

Either way, the proposed "ink gun" is fucking retarded.

Maybe going up against five fleet carriers to test the limits of my drone defense system was a bad idea.

There's several hundred dead Stinger and Hellfire drones drifting towards my ship.
>>
>>171990117
>Sorry, you lost me.

No wonder, you seem to get tangled on the different lines of text. My choice of phrasing and shorthanded explanations probably don't help.

Regardless, I'll space the lines out further, lest you fuck it up again.

Considering the distances, velocities and target sizes of (remotely plausible) space combat, it will be practically impossible to target individual subsystems.

This leads to a scenario where a projectile either hits or not, and hitting something like a specific sensor array will come down to plain chance.

Given that the less accurate kinetic weapon can hit the target (land a "perfect hit") what advantage would there be to an even more accurate weapon (such as a laser)?

How would I go about making a bipedal 'Walker' vehicle in FTD with 3 joints each leg (Hip, knee, and ankle) and how would I get it to stay upright without putting jets/spinners fucking everywhere? I wanna make MECHS even though they're impractical. I assume I'd need to use lua to control the spinners since acbs are so limited for something involving multiple spinners connected to eachother?

What is it with nuclear stuff and really really really really dumb mistakes?
I've never heard of that level of idiocy, like the one with the screwdriver, or the bucket, happening in other industries.

What are some of the most mechanically interesting things you've made, /egg/? Be it interesting from a gameplay mechanics standpoint, or engineering complexity standpoint.

From the depths here. Has anyone found a genuine use for particle cannons? They seem inferior to lasers in terms of energy cost to damage and space usage

I would argue with this but there's that one nip who carried radioactive shit in an open bucket.
The one they kept alive while he was slowly dissolving.
