Big Ship Edition
Previous thread: >>172018520

The thread is dedicated to all games about building machines and systems out of blocks, in space or otherwise. Also, all these games are ded. Only ded games may join, otherwise they must have their own thread.
Whether or not a game belongs in /egg/ is a case by case matter, however games that would belong in /svgg/, space voxel games general, are automatically considered /egg/

WebM for physicians:
>gitgud.io/nixx/WebMConverter.git

List of currently known and vaguely not dead /egg/ games (this list is not fully inclusive and if you think a game might belong here, feel free to ask):
>Algodoo
>Avorion
>Besiege
>Chode - Children of a Dead Earth
>Empyrion - Galactic Survival
>Factorio
>From the Depths
>GearBlocks
>Garry's mod
>Homebrew - Vehicle Sandbox
>Infinifactory
>Intersteller Rift
>KOHCTPYKTOP: Engineer of the People
>Machinecraft
>REM
>Robocraft
>Robot Arena 2
>Scrap Mechanic
>SHENZEN I/O
>Space Engineers
>SpaceChem
>StarMade
>Skywanderers

Games that are definitely not /egg/:
>Minecraft
>The general that quite literally cannot be named. The Mexican scam artist one. With the shitposters. Fuck off.
>Hearthstone, found in the hearthstone general, /hsg/, not in this general.

Information about these games, such as where to get them if they're not on steam, trailers, /egg/ conquered/hosted servers, and other shit can be found in this pad:

Just stumbled upon this general. Whats a good starter vidya from the OP?
>>
>>172417636
Starter is either spengies if you want to suffer) or abortion (sphess, bu not much depth)
Besiege is also a good starting point.
Machinecraft should come after besiege imho, simpler in some aspects but quite obtuse overall
>>
>>172417914
Abortion isn't even /egg/ people just played it because they wee bored. Machinecraft is closer to a 3d animation playset than an engineering game.
>>
>>172418040
Machinecraft is literally just nip roblox but more complicated, I don't know why people don't realize this.
>>
>>172417636

factorio
those 2 are probably the best to get you hooked in. zachtronics games are good too, but i think they are often not mentioned because ppl leave them after solving all the puzzles (aka. the campaign). i did have some fun in spacechem and it should be cheap now, since it's a few years old

By that logic, diagonal stripes do not exist at all, seeing as any line can be considered a straight stripe on a diagonal surface.

The slash symbol, for example /
Just tilt your screen a bit, then it's a straight stripe on a diagonal surface.

Yes theres very little use of the third dimension

The battles are made to resemble Napoleonic war battles, but in space, hence the limited formations, and narrow battlefields achieved with handwavey explanation for why going any further from the lanes immediately damages the ships for some reason - I never quite got that.

Issue is that it capsizes, not the location of the waterline?
Plenty of ways to solve that.

More weight lower, best done by extending the hull vertically.
Add active stabilization. A set of roll control propellers and a roll PID should help massively.
Just cut the air pumps to 80-90%. That'll make it sit a bit lower and be more stable.
Strange as it may sound, putting some dediblades in the bottom, setting them to 100% always up and full speed reverse will likely straighten your bitch out ASAP.

Pure kinetic railguns are basically useless against anything with even basic shielding.
If your railgun is in the 18 to 180mm range I'd say go with inertially fused frag, if it's larger I'd start mixing in flak and HE.

Also sorta wondering why you have one-turns on laser guided missiles. You do know they'll happily pull as many 180s as it takes if the beam's on target?
>>
>>172507890
>Pure kinetic railguns are basically useless against anything with even basic shielding.
Yeah, I scrapped the railgun because of shields but then I developed a fuckhuge missile rack that fires big enough EMP missiles at a high enough speed and volume to knock out virtually any shielding no matter the countermeasures so I might resurrect it.

>You do know they'll happily pull as many 180s as it takes if the beam's on target?
I did not know this. The descriptions say that the beam can only be detected in a certain radius IIRC though, but FTD descriptions are often wrong.
>>
>>172468201

The irony of "Just use 3d" in space is that 3d doesn't significantly change strategic combat.

By the time we get to space, adaptive formations will be so critical, that it will take minutes to reorient the fleet to a new attack vector (which took your fleet hours to do, since rotation is far less dV than transversal.)

Your 3d approach has just become 2d again.

You can attack in a vertical pincer, which then is immediately oriented in 2d as a horizontal pincer.

Attacking in more complex formations finally forces a 3d conflict... Which is entirely identical to a non-euclidean 2d conflict, since being above or below the target has no practical advantage on the strategic scale.

That assumes you have enough ships for these arrangements, which are exponentially more expensive to field and inversely thinner due to the massive surface area.

Especially in LOGH, where craft are optimized to fire in formation and commanders permit order of war in good faith that the enemy will similarly maintain their structure, 3d attacks will be of limited use, and typically will be more effective due to confusion and excellent marshalling of ships than any flanking.

Also, it's significantly more durable due to the wall structure, and cooks faster because of the increased surface area exposed to heat.

It's actually rather practical if you don't care about the shape and it wasn't priced as a cooking gimmick.

>>
>>172509995

Actually yes; I ought to go buy my mom a replacement for her old air bake sheets; Drop something on them and you'll collapse the gap.

Even a very high quality pan will warp because it isn't braced dimensionally, the squiggle pan won't.

The problem with the muffin pan is you'll likely sacrifice the chewy, moist section of the brownie to the smaller thermal mass of individual cupcakes.

A large enough cupcake size would prevent this, but it will not have the aesthetic or tactile shape of a traditional brownie.

It's cooking Anon; the moment you get beyond basic competency, it becomes traditions, secrets and superstitions. If you ever wanna start a fight, Ask "Should I sear a steak before or after I bake it?" and watch the knives come out.

>The problem with the muffin pan is you'll likely sacrifice the chewy, moist section of the brownie to the smaller thermal mass of individual cupcakes
The degree of 'chewy moist' of a brownie subsection should be a function of distance to the pan edge.
Thus, to increase the CM of a brownie (as a whole) you need only increase the muffin diameter and height.

Not exactly.
A drip pot will drip hot water on top of the coffee grounds, letting it seep through (top to bottom) gradually as gravity allows.
This is in contrast to a percolator, which uses vapor pressure to force hot water from the bottom chamber through the grounds into the upper chamber.
I have no idea how large an impact these differences have on brewing temperature/pressure and the qualities of the resulting cup.

FYI the big espresso machines you see in coffee bars use vapor too, it gives a denser and more concentrate coffee wich makes it taste better. The coffe from those that use hot water dripping from the top is basically hot water with a little bit of coffee aroma

What you describe would likely not produce anything similar to coffee.
I suspect it'd be colourless, free of caffeine, both bitterness and acidity would probably be nearly absent.

Also, I've used rotary evaporators on multiple occasions, and it's always been a pain to get rid of water.
Boiling off a cup of water at room temperature at 50 mbar could take several hours (depending upon quality of setup), even if the container is submerged in a water bath.

A different proposal for vacuum coffee
>mix finely powdered coffee grounds and low-boiling solvent (ethyl alcohol, dichloromethane, acetone, hexane or what not)

>remove solvent on rotary evaporator without heating

I did make an off-hand point about the end result being literally just coffee grounds suspended in ice or whatever, but considering it was just a joke I didn't really feel like writing to much into why it wouldn't work.

>A different proposal for vacuum coffee
>Create a (probably) crude coffee extract
>Add to water
I mean, sure, taking things more seriously, I guess it might work, though I'm not really qualified to say.

That said though, if we were to repeat processes for long enough, considering cold drip coffee is a thing, simply re-exposing the coffee water to the air to heat up every now and again, while possibly adding more water to compensate for any losses to boiling, would probably still make coffee in the end.

152,000 blocks.

I added an extra turret to the back and also lengthened the stern section. The game actually runs fine so long as I'm not actively placing blocks (which I assume makes it recalculate the centre of mass and centre of drag).

If I place anything that makes the ship longer the game will hang for 5-10 minutes. Anything else just makes it hang for a half-second.

The centre of drag indicator is bugging the fuck out.
>>
>>172517228
What's happening is that your ship now uses more memory that From The Depths can access at once. And enlarging the bounding box means FtD has to reallocate memory for your ship. So now FtD is running at hard drive speed instead of RAM speed.
You'll get fuckawful lagspikes whenever you extend it from now on, but if you just prefab a length 64 metal beam and slap however much length, height, and width you'll need in right now it should be mostly fine afterwards. Though you'll likely need to let it sit for an hour or so per prefab.
>>
>>172517228

That's good to know. Cheers senpai, it actually makes a lot of sense.

I did figure out the prefab trick just through trial and error, but expanding it before that was like pulling teeth.

So I'm guessing FtD allocates a certain amount of memory to itself and when I go over that with my ship it has to allocate more, but only allocates exactly how much more it needs? That seems dumb.

Fun fact: if you make your EMP missiles big enough and the enemy ships are small enough you can knock out their AI without even really damaging the ship. A bank of 20 12-block EMP cruise missiles can knock out Godly designs in one volley by EMPing the AI.

>not sure if coffee extract dissolved in water would work
It'd still be coffee in some meaning of the word, that's for sure.
Using a soxhlet extractor would likely yield a more potent extract, or at the very least require less solvent.
Primary concern is the solubility of the coffee extract and the actual taste of the resulting cup.

As for the whole icicle coffee thing, I still don't understand the point of the vacuum.
In all likelihood, you'll only really distill off the more volatile compounds - such as those responsible for the smell of coffee.
Get rid of the colour too, and you may just end up with a cup of coffee, which at first glance appears to be hot water.

It doesn't make sense to >re-exposing the coffee water to the air to heat up every now and again
Study attached image regarding the operation of a rotary evaporator. 10 is a round-bottom flask (containing the coffeecicle) attached to 30, which allows it to rotate.
Anything boiled off would pass through 30 into 40 (a cold trap, to be filled with dry ice and either acetone or propyl alcohol) where it condenses and falls into 50 for collection.
Note that the entire setup can be raised or lowered, so that 10 can be partially submerged into 20, a container for water or oil which may include a heating mechanism and thermostat.

Hey lads. I've just gotten into From The Depths, I've played about 50 hours. I've got how to build missiles and other stuff. Basically, the boat "works" but the gun is utter trash. It does almost no damage, low rate of fire, and a low muzzle velocity.

Can anyone provide me with pointers for building and AA/Anti Light Boat advanced cannon designs?

Is the low rate of fire from the loaders having to reload, or the barrels having to cool down? For the former, more autoloaders [use belt-fed ones if you can]. For the latter, more barrels
Use sabot body/head pieces and/or lodsa gunpowder to make the shots faster
And learn to use the longer slopes to make your vehicles my hydro/aerodynamic, it really really really helps

It's mostly below deck. Above deck is armour, gimbal IR/Camera, and a few other bits and bobs.
>>172583189
Usually it's from reloading, but I'm stuck on how many autoloaders I can jam into the thing if I want it to be able to turn 360 (though the conning tower gets in the way of it being able to shoot anything directly behind it). I've tried using sabot, but the max muzzle velocity I can get is 700m/s~ by which point it's not doing enough damage to reliably put holes in something like a Shrike.
I'm planning on rebuilding the Frigate/Corvette once I've built a destroyer. I tried another turret shroud (pic related), and the Destroyer will likely end up inheriting the design.
>>
>>172583740
Post what the actual gun looks like underneath
If you can't fit more loaders, then switch to belt-fed ones with a bunch of inputs attached
>>
>>172584089
I'm not playing right at this minute and I ended up scrapping the gun after experimenting with various different barrel/ammo configuration, but the clearance I have is basically 3x3x3, maybe stretching that to 3y/5x/5z.

I just slapped 4 auto loaders each with 3 racks attached and 2 belt feds onto it. I'm fairly sure I could fit more autoloaders on, I'm just not sure how I'd go about doing that.
>>
>>172584795
Yeah, that's below the size I'd say is necessary to make a decent rapid-fire gun.
It's all but sure to either fire too slow to feel right, deal trash for damage, or need more space.

You could make a decent, if small CRAM turret with that space, but if you're set on AA I'd suggest a small two-axis piercing PAC.
>>
>>172585341
That makes sense, thanks.

And yeah, I'm pretty set on AA. It sounds silly, but the destroyer won't have AA for doctrinal reasons, and the next thing up would be a cruiser.

You think things are bad NOW?
The current fuckwit doing dev work in place of Nick "Do my job for me" Smart is planning to buff shields, then add impenetrable shields.
>>
>>172595603
I've not used much of shields. If they're OP I might end up using more though. Currently I've just got a few strength 3s set up along the side and front.

Missiles seem really, really strong too. I've got a rack of missiles with 2 frags and a EMP and they took maybe 30 mins to set up and tweak, and they gut any ship (in a similar weight category) in one or two volleys quite easy.
>>
>>172596381
Missiles are strong, but atleast there are countermeasure options, flares ,ir decoy, LAMS.
Shields are cheap as shit in rp and power, and basically render anything below 1400 block rail guns and big damage lasers/PACs redundant.
>>
>>172596219
Impenetrable shields that take damage and can be brought down with continuous fire
>>
>>172598390
In a game where you have literally no control over relative position, so you'll just ping off three dozen different shields for two hours before one ship or another accidently rams an island.
>>
>>172598752
Or, y'know, just wait until they run out of gas without a Fuel Bowser to back them up
>>
>>172599068
Yeah, real fucking exciting.
"This is my new airship! It can survive long enough to kill the enemy, because the enemy runs out of gas first! Unless there's two fights in a row, in which case it loses!"

I'm afraid that's what small craft will have to resort to, though.
>>
>>172599270
Then use more small craft. A bunch of 'em. Overwhelm the enemy defenses and take down their shields. Disruptor warheads are getting a buff too, in case you missed it. Just have a big gun that fires those and fuck up whatever shields get in the way
Or just play on non-Godly difficulty, that works too
>>

>>

>>
>>172599669
Disruptors are useless against anything with layered shielding and self-repair.
The only reason they'll be half-decent in campaign is because most things had their repair bots ripped out.

And using more small craft isn't an option until there's a way to make the AI stop fucking ramming friendly craft.
>>
>>172599669
>Then use more small craft.
Let's say the opposing enemy ship is using 100% of the battle block limit.
What this means is that even if your fleet is ten times as large, you would still be outclassed in terms of sheer number of blocks.
That's of course ignoring the plain tedium of having to build spawning this many small craft in the first place.
>>
>>172595603

>>172600980

>>172600646
Sheer number of blocks isn't a be-all, end-all metric. Onyx Watch ships are huge, going by your logic they'd be totally unbeatable
All it takes is one lucky or powerful shot to cripple a weapon or crucial system. You don't need to destroy almost every block of the enemy like Robocuck, a big ship may have its weapons stripped off well before it gets too damaged and despawns
>>
>>172601276
>Use more gun
Very difficult on small craft

>Use lasers
Impossible on small craft
Also, they're adding impenetrable anti-energy shields.

>Use PACs
They're adding impenetrable anti-energy shields.

>Use steam engines
The PPV difference isn't that big compared to riptides. More energy also helps derpshields more than it helps weapons.

>Use torpedoes
Sonar decoys are OP, pls nerf.
Lua torpedoes do do fairly well though.
>>

>The PPV difference isn't that big compared to riptides
Didn't know that, I don't fuck with steam engines myself even though I'm shit at fuel engines

But really though, why are you set on using only small craft? You'd be better off with a mixed force of different machines of different sizes
>>

I find 250mm to be the bare minimum to get the job done, you can belt feed and still get a shaped charge/inertial and decent muzzle velocity.
They really are bare minimum though, and feel distinctly underwhelming.
I think i'm gonna muck about with 250s at 2/4m shell lengths to see if I can make a more satifying smallish shield buster.
250 is also nice because of double barrel at max guage increasers.

Obviously, but all things equal, more blocks means more trouble.
If we're rolling with the assumption that the opposition is using shitty age of sail OW ships, then it's moot to discuss effective design doctrines.
Assuming the opponent is retarded makes you a physician.

why isn't there a red light when exiting wars, just as there is a blue one when entering it?
unrelated: wsg has spess thread right now
>>
>>172657776
warp, goddamnit
>>
>>172657776
Anon.. the red shift is right behind you
>>
>>172658667
I guess, but when exiting warp speeds you are slowing down to sublight speeds, the deceleration wouldn't give out a red? at least in our eyes, that would accomodate to tons of blue? (technically orange is the contrasting colour, but nah)
>>
>>172659440
Nein. Even exiting warp, if you're looking forward, the light is still going faster than normal until you are stopped. It just gets less blue.

Unless you turn around and exit warp in reverse.
>>
>>172659440
Nope. Blueshift is caused by relative speed. The light gets compacted because you're moving into it.
Redshift is similar, but the light's getting stretched because you're moving away from it.

You'd see blueshift ahead of you, no shift to your sides, redshift behind you.
Though it's worth noting that at "warp" speeds the blueshift is so intense that visible light becomes invisible and you start seeing things that were in the radio spectrum.

>>172660109
Nein yourself, the light is never going faster or slower. It's just that you're moving relatively faster or slower to the source of that light so you get a doppler effect.
>>
>>172660402
oddly enough, I was considering a follow-up post explaining that I didn't mean the light was actually going faster, but that the frequency appears higher.. Thanks for doin it for me, I guess.

>>
>>172660867
No problem.

Learned something today too. I intuitively expected that FTL would break the doppler equations, but it works just fine if you plug in values > C so long as they're sensible directions (IE, not trying to look at a wave behind you that you're outrunning). Which I should have realized anyways, given that it works fine for sound and supersonic objects.

Planet side or in space? I would say they would be effective to a degree, but if it's in space throwing a bunch of shrapnel near yourself isn't an amazing idea. Anti-missile or anti-drone missiles would probably be better suited even if it's at a higher cost. If you've got the FCS to track and fire at all these things with a gun, you may as well use a laser from x1000 the distance to do the job.

>>
>>172680583
ya no don't let drones or missiles get that close to you in CHODE. If some stragglers do, then a projectile weapon CAN finish them off. Lasers deactivate missiles and drones from way farther though. I prefer to intercept with nukes or flak missiles before it even gets to that point though.

By all means, try it out though, man. I'm not a pro at this.
>>
I guess it depends on your build, a bit
>>
>>172681061
Ok. I tried it and it's terrible. It suffers from the classic problem of all your guns focus firing on a single target.

I do have a potential use for flak though: knock out concealed radiators by detonating behind the enemy craft.

After a short while I've deemed it a steaming pile of shit. It was apparently it's prime or near it, I fear how shite it has to be now.

Here's the torpedo bay(s).

They're set to automatically open if there's an enemy below 30m, and then close when no enemies are present.

If you're wondering what the flat bit which I'm standing on will be for in the other picture, it's going to be a railgun mount.

Unlikely. If there's one thing everyone knows about ponyfags it's that they cannot resist injecting their ponyfaggotry into everything at every opportunity and I've seen close to zero ponyfaggotry over there.

remfaggot is a rare exception he's managed to keep his pony obsession in check somehow and only posted it once or twice.

You'd be surprised how similar this sort of behavior to /pol/. Like the horsefuckers, /pol/ is ever so eager to inject politics into every conversation.
I'm not even talking about the obviously political threads that pop up every other day.

You're a retard for even comparing the two. One is a tv show about neon cartoon pones watched by little girls and fucked up failures and the other is politics, the stuff that runs the world.
>>
>>172746185
It's not my fault they both exhibit the same sort of behavior.
Besides, politics is a tv reality show, though you can't always change the channel. Busyness runs the world, politics is just a show they put on for our distraction.
>>
>>172743031
They should keep the merge and just rename the board to /si/-self improvement
>>
>>172746561
except it's not the same sort of behavior. You're comparing trivial degenerate garbage that no sane person wants to know about with world-altering events and policies that most people have at least a passing interest in.
>>
>>172746746
Hiroshimoot should just merge all the boards into one single board.
All of them.
One board.
Even /zz/ and /fk/.
>>
>>172746797
No, we're comparing ponyfags to /pol/ users. You're confusing the subject with the people involved.
>>
>>172746797
Slow down there Mr. Serious Business.
I'm comparing the behavior of one kind of retards with that of a different kind of retards. And so far, it looks very similar.
I'm not talking about comparing actual politics and fucking kids' show.
Although both are a kind of a tv show. One just happens to have much cuter characters.

>world-altering events and policies that most people have at least a passing interest in
>implying everything wasn't decided months ago
>implying your votes matter at all
>implying it's not just a minor tussle between the 1%
>>
>>172747408
>>172747498
You two are fucking retarded. There's a reason the news reports politics and not the latest MLP episode.

Politics leaks into everything because it's an influential topic of interest that people care about because it affects them.

Brony bullshit escapes containment because the people involved are insufferable faggots who can't shut the fuck up about their utterly irrelevant tv show that nobody cares about.

I don't expect you to understand because news flash, bronies are mentally ill.
>>
>>172747952
What part of they're talking about the userbase and not the topic do you not get?
/pol/ is filled with newfags with no sense of tact, or anything, who someone of ANY political ideology would think are retarded.
/mlp/ is /mlp/, of course.
>>
>>172748480
>There isn't a single person using /mlp/ regularly who wouldn't be better off killing themselves
wew
spewing dem hot opinions, huh?
>>
>>172748898
It's closer to fact than opinion. Grown adults who are obsessed with a show for little girls clearly aren't quite right in the head and should do everyone a favor and eliminate themselves from the gene pool. It's on the same tier as people who steal used diapers out of other peoples garbage then heat them up in a microwave and wear them.
>>
>>172749170
so
why havent you done it yet?
>>
Guys could you stop arguing about politics and ponies and help me make a bote that doesn't look like arse.
>>
>>172749217
I don't own a microwave, ovens are better
>>
>>172749293
Add more function to it. The form will follow.
>>
>>172749423
Well, my concern with that is that after adding the PACs to the destroyer, it now looks somehow even worse. I'm going to rebuild the pacs to try and make them less long and thin.
>>
>>172749916
Aesthetics can't be taught in a few imageboard posts. You're just not applying yourself. The bridge is a fuckign box ffs.
>>
>>172749916
I'd show you my PAC destroyer, however, we're at image limit.
>>
>>172750196
I was going to stretch the bridge over the railgun, which is going to go on the flat area infront of the bridge, but I can't stretch it out and make it look good. I also wanted to do a tiered bridge, but It'd end up being a bit too tall, so I stretched out a raised area at the back instead. I'll probably try rounding out the front of the bridge.
>>
>>172750603
A tiered bridge makes sense since you can't see where the fuck you're going atm

So I figured this was the right place to ask.
Why is Pistons still dogshit in Space Engineers?
I guess it's a step forward that it no longer crashes the game when you combine multiple pistons to the same block, but now it just breaks off instead.

I don't know. I'm too lazy to make a new ded.

The "developers" want the game to die so they can move onto something else.

I refuse to accept.
>>
>>172755897
You know it's true. Space engineers only makes sense from the perspective of insiders trying to sabotage it.
It's just not possible for developers to be this incompetent.

If it was politics that was leaking instead of /pol/shit you'd have a point. But it's not politics, it's trumpism, national socialism apologetics and "boy do I hate niggers." They can't shut the fuck up about niggers. That's the difference between political discussion and /pol/shit.
