You've lost the tumblr audience by lovingly modelling her ass instead of sticking her in baggy pants, and you've lost the 4chan audience by making her a tumblr user. What exactly were you thinking?

I'm very disappointed in myself.

I find it very hard to get into gamedev. This isn't an easy hobby to just jump into, obviously, and there are enough nodev faggots shitting up these threads. But I just want to state that I feel very bad, and feel like I'm letting down everyone by not even trying a serious effort to gamedev.

I have other hobbies I could, and probably should, put more effort towards first. Still feel bad about it. Please enjoy my suffering, peace.

Was mildly confident I could get a system like this to work, through various tutorials and forum questions I've learned a bit about Events and Delegates and got this working in a state that I feel confident I can expand on it.

That's literally 100% of game engine tutorials on YouTube. They develop stuff in earlier episodes, bait people into clicking their vids that only contain them-specific instructions. The Unreal YouTube channel does that, they do stuff NO ONE ELSE DOES and when they post instructions, they can only work with their methods. Say, they are socketing a weapon, they include the gun in the player actor, so the blueprints contain self references that no one else can use unless their gun is in the fucking player actor too.

Left feedback for about half the games, generally the browser games and titles starting with A-L. I'll try to do more but I had to take a trip after demo day and it might have been too long after DD13 to give meaningful feedback. If you have a game I didn't cover reply and I'll try to prioritize it, but no promises (I'll start with the back of the alphabet for DD14, but I'll also try to start feedback earlier)

>>
>>170957827
That's a good question. I've only learned by trial and error.

What I would suggest is looking at the scripting documentation for the slider, and playerprefs. (I'm starting with the very basics here, you might already know what playerprefs is.) You probably have your main menu in a different scene than your playable game, so you will need to be able to save the value of that slider into a file, then load that in the next scene. Use PlayerPrefs.SetFloat("Anythingyouwanthere" , Volslider.value); at some point in your menu, then in your other scene, Musicaudiosource.volume=PlayerPrefs.GetFloat("Anythingyourwanthere);

People are less likely to give money if they can't see constant progress. They want to think their money's going straight towards development, and if they can't see the fruit of that then they'll stop giving money
While trying to improve skills makes perfect sense from your point of view, from their perspective it means progress isn't being made since they can't see any output

Took a few hours, although I did take a break for dinner in the middle. The rotation wasn't hard to correct, most of the sprites came out fine, the more complex sprites I had to fix by hand.

The hardest part was actually the gradient over the whole image, which made it hard to fix all the colors. I eventually gave up on trying to fix the colors.

wall lighting improved.png
500KB, 2059x1535px
You can't tell from this shot, but the lighting has been improved. Before i was trying to set my atmospheric perspective shade and my fire shade by throwing variables into one RGB color. Now the atmospheric shade is back to it's own color (R,G,B where all three are the same fraction of 255, based on how far from the camera a wall is) and this color is then merged with another RGB (where R is a fraction of 255 based on how far a wall is from a fire, and where G and B are both 0). Then this merged color is used as the color blend over the wall sprite. Walls also now can choose from 2 sprites to slightly break patterns. i need to add a few more for this to work better.

I use Blender because I like making my own things. But use Make Human if you're not interested in being an artist or having unique art.
>>
>>170964641
When you have something interesting to show.
>>
>>170964832
Yep. It plays to the game's slapped-together look/comedy strongly and bookends the experience pretty well.

Definitely keep both.
>>
>>170964812
The previous issue was that, as you brought the camera to a wall, it would lighten everything because all the RGB values approached 255, where I forced them to max out. Then as you walked away from fires, they would start to project proper red colors as the atmospheric components started to drop towards zero, and the red component could be represented. All fixed now.

Blender, I only ever tried makehuman once and it was back when I was very new to 3D design and even then I was disappointed with it, it can't really be compared to Blender, it's just a character creator.

no prob. also put some minimum amount of time into making your banner/icon look nice

make sure your recent pictures has some of your work, I click on peoples profiles often and they're like "ARTISTE / I MAKE GAMES" but then they only have meme pictures or reposts

this is all assuming you're an artist or your game has art
>>
I save everything people say about my game.

I save the occasional DD fanart, I screenshot comments, agdg replies and Tumblr posts.
I record people talking about my game when I show it in real life and then transcribe the audio for easy searching later.

I collect this data and average it out to find out which aspects of my game are falling behind and try to improve them.

I also build profiles of people who talked about my game, this is specially hard on agdg since everyone is anonymous but by analyzing post times, styles and opinions I have a fairly accurate map of each poster here and their opinions on my game.

My plan is to eventually build a network of data of all people who are my target audience and I will find out what exactly makes them tick and with this I will develop the perfect game.

Depends on what you are interested in, but odds are you'll have to pay for an actual book, or at least a PDF.

Make tools in your editor for what you need right now. Don't worry about designing the perfect editor, it's just a tool to use to develop your game.

When it becomes unwieldy and hard to use, then you can think about the design a little bit and see if you can clean it up.

>>170966119
Understanding why certain conventions exist is something that really only comes from experience. Program how you find appropriate and when the reasons for doing a particular pattern or data structure become apparent you will understand better how to use them - far better than any book or internet tutorial can teach.

It's not much work if you're just making some 2D game with SDL. It's nice to be able to actually understand what your computer is doing when your game is running.

I dedicate 2 days of the week to music, 2 days to art, and 2 days to programming, and sunday to do whatever. Spend the rest of the hours of the day after you return from wagecucking/school on one subject that day, or the whole day if you're a balls out NEET.

I like the style, and I know others do to. I can't stand sameface safe fucking anime meme shit and I find it funny that the same people that would prompt me to adopt that style would also crit somebody for 'pandering' for other styles.

If the game releases one day, the same kinds of comments are going to be made then, after the projects become a lot more personal, so It's better to become hardened to it now rather than later.

You can't force yourself into a certain lifestyle. Motivation doesn't just happen. You need to nourish yourself in the right ways.

If you really, truly want to get into game development, you have to go through the rites of passage like everyone else. This is how everything in life works, by the way.

Don't know what those rites are, or where to even begin? Look at the lifestyles of other developers; really look at them, and understand their stories as much as you can. They all have stories. There are a lot of online resources these days - developer diaries, GDC talks, interviews, and more. Listen to the stories of developers that have made games you're really passionate about, because those are the stories you want to learn from the most.

last batch of moderately-low-effort mostly-inclusive reviews

Black Valentine: Everything was slow and I couldn't get anywhere. The physics seemed to work pretty well though.

Blade of Blood: It's not exactly my kind of thing and it's early days it seems but it's shaping up well. The graphics are pretty readable even like they are, without textures. The controls feel pretty good except I feel like the cooldown for the normal attack and the one-two is a bit long. There were some ledges I couldn't jump onto but I think that was intentional. I couldn't quit the game from the game itself, or get back to the title screen, the "are you sure?" message would just stay up and nothing would happen, I could even back out and keep playing with the message up and the screen dimmed.

NipNip: Walking feels a little slow, but otherwise everything feels good. Everything looks and sounds good too, even though I can tell it's a bit minimal and deliberately simple. People think simple is easy mode, but it's hard to make it look good, and going simple and cartoony like you did can make that easier or harder. It's working out so far.

Umbrella Warriors: The graphics are still great and the game still feels good. I played as the new(?) cat and she(?) feels kind of slow. It seems like the challenge has been ramped up, I played on "spicy" and I got killed a good few times, I'm pretty sure I tried that last time and it was still a pushover. I like the level of challenge that has. Lastly, HOW THE FUCK DOES THIS UI WORK? Hearts don't seem to equal health, I can't figure out what they do stand for, and I had to read a really scrunched up bunch of text to even pick out what goes with the heart symbol. I have no idea what stars mean. I have no idea what most of the little boxes are for. I know one box indicates health but it has no scale and it's not quickly readable and it doesn't stand out. Other than shitty HUD/UI you're fine.

It's been a pleasure playing all the entries I played.

Later meaning the ones around 97-00, yah.
As far as a story goes, the current plan is to treat levels/progression like SMW - there's mostly linear level progression done with an overworld and minimal dialogue - but there's still an established goal/objective for why you're doing things.
I wasn't planning on doing a more serious story with VN cutscenes and stuff, reason being I think this kind of platforming genre's a bit faster paced and players don't like being forced to pause and read since it's not what they expect from these games. That's just a baseless assumption though, I haven't done any actual research into it

A guy that likes minecraft, like a lot, and all he does is respond to peoples games with pictures of his minecraft world and posts detailing why their game isn't as good as minecraft and why they should make their game like minecraft.

You've just encountered a new and unique shitpost inspired by agdg, I call it "The ideaguy shitpost"

The problem with programming is that actually a significant part of it is social. Like you can learn algorithms and data structures from books but the way you improve your code and designs are from having people read your code and from mentorship.

???

The way you improve is by writing shitty code and have it pile up to the point of being a tangled mess and realizing there is a cleaner way and rewriting it in the new way.

Don't tell me how to improve my code you fucking faggot. Do I break down your door and open all your jars of mayonnaise and put salt in them to make them taste better? NO! Fuck off, if you're so smart why don't you work for Nasa or Peta you fucking code bitch boy? Because your code is shit ITS FUCKING SHIT. I bet you don't even name your variables using camelcase its called camelcase becasue they look like a camels humps but I bet you didn't even know that because you're a fucking retard. Maybe you should try going to /dpt/ where real people learn to code, or maybe rpg maker general is more your style princess codahonis? Maybe you should learn to paint with all the colors of your shit code (fyi its only various greens and browns) you probably can't even do that though because you suck at art too, you fucking art pussy prince. What game are you even making? "pixel platformer" or "unity cube prototype"? Either one could be finished by anyone that actually can code instead of you... AKA I CAN'T CODE BECAUSE I AM DUMB. If you tried submitting code to an open source project your code would be so shit you would disillusion the entire development team and turn them and the project into proprietary software. Its okay though you made it through the "vim tutor" so you're practically a programming master (this is what retarded faggots actually believe). Maybe you should try reading a book by Bjarne Stroutsrtupper poodle He's a real programmer, unlike you.

Don't ever tell me how code improves again! Because I'm right and you're wrong.

This is agdg and you're giving devs false information with your input so NOT ONLY are you hurting yourself you are hurting others (this makes you practically hitler btw). I bet when you post you imagine yourself as some smug yoshi dinosaur, you green, shell guzzling faggot. I bet you like fat italians riding you every day.

You don't even know how to design games.

I'm right and you're wrong bitch.

I don't know how this happened, but somehow I have 2 knee joints overlapping with each other. Right now I'm trying to apply bone constraints, but it keeps messing up when I increase the chain length to 2. I didn't have this problem with my arms, which are all set up now.

How do I merge 2 joints into 1 in Blender?

Not the original anon you're replying to. What do you mean by knee joint? Can't you just delete one pair and work with another?

IK constraint should be applied to the forearm and calf bones with a chain length of 2 so that it only affects up to the thigh. Again, not sure if knee joint is some sort of special configuration or if you're just referring to two bones connected to form a knee. It also looks like you're using different bone models from the typical octahedral variant?

>Substance Designer
I mostly see this being used for making nice looking tiled textures (bricks, floors, steel panels, roof tiles, etc.), if you need that, then yeah, but only if you're willing to take time to learn to use this. it's node-based

>Substance Painter
Photoshop for 3d models, this includes painting for normal maps, displacement maps, alpha, emissive, etc. it has a lot of procedural effects which make texturing easier, and you can layer your hand-painting on top of that. also takes time to learn

Design and Painter are great pieces of software.

I've never liked the results I got from Bitmap2Material. You need strong lighting to get a good normal map but strong lighting will destroy your albedo/diffuse. Somewhere inbetween produces crap results too.

Better to get a good albedo and make the normal yourself in Zbrush/mudbox.

Following an IK Rigging Tutorial for a Minecraft Character. I did the arms just fine, but having an issue with the legs that's driving me mad. Refer to my webm.

I actually did end up recreating the legs, and I'm having the same problem. As you can see at the start of the webm, I can manipulate anything just fine, but once I link the upper leg to the abdomen as a parent, it disconnects the upper leg from the lower leg, creating 2 separate knee joints. Any time I add more chain lengths while there are 2 knee joints, the leg goes crazy.

How do I get into gamedev with literally no talent?
I don't know how to do absolutely anything, my only perk in life and anything I ever did was speak/translate fluently in 5 different languages and studying them in deep.

What do I do, where do I start.
Programming, 3d modeling?

How do I become a game director who just tells people what to in a studio.
Do I need to make a game idea portfolio or something, that just seems retarded.

How does it usually happen, most of them usually start as some nobody staff like a programmer or something and then suddenly you hear - "hey that "insert.jap29" made a game! or they're just extremely rich billionaire conglomerate company owners if we're talking western companies.

It just seems so weird.

But if not that then how the fuck do you become a director in a game company.

All I need to do to make a movie is to submit a screenplay I can write in a few weeks and get a pass.

But with this I don't think I can go to square or atlus and say "hey can I have the pres. here I got a nice script ova' here let him check it out".

You fucking WISH.
You have to either
a) actually study cinematography and get some solid connections in the field, then you can try working as some asitant to actuall screen writer and THEn you will MAYBE get a chance to write your own script that makes it into actual movie
b) make it big with something else (book/game), so that they know they can make a bank off the story, you won't be involved in the development, except maybe as someone to talk out the details, but you will have your name in the credits somewhere and get royalties

You should take a 30 minute break from the screen (and from sitting) every 40 minutes if you want to keep your spine, eyes, brain and entire organism in check instead of burying it.

>+ Learning about Arrays
I'm utterly amazed of how much you've done without knowing shit.
>>
>>171000063
By which I mean you can't make the content without using the software you weren't licensed to use. It still results in theft.

>>171000228
I've seen companies get their shit kicked in by Adobe for using their software without proper licensing. Trust me, you don't want to pay for it later when they come for their pound of flesh.

Unless you don't want to be successful, that is. If you're not worth their time they're probably not going to come after you -- but if you want to attach an anchor to what could be something that opens up a new business and potentially drown yourself on what may be one of your only big successes in life, you're welcome to do so.

Meanwhile, I'll be over here using Blender for free and not needing to ever worry about that sort of crap while I also toodle around in ZBrush 4R7 which I own a license to, along with all the other software I use with the purchased licensing - because I intend to be successful and I'm not going to let something stupid like that kill my business.
>>
>>171000376
>I'm utterly amazed of how much you've done without knowing shit.

I never needed to learn about arrays because I never needed to store a bunch of information that needed to be brought up later. First time making a game where I'm going to have a save file, so Im pretty much forced to learn about it.

You're smarter than all those people they spend lots of money on who are paid to find people like you who think they can dodge people like them. I can tell because all arrogant people who think they can't be caught are the ones who are never caught.

I'm sure those folks at Adobe will appreciate your arrogance as they collect their checks after you get either (effectively) blackmailed or bombed.

The 'deal' is that you pay for all the years/months you used the software at a hiked rate - or they take you to court and sue it out of you while also getting you to pay their lawyer fees.

You're not entitled to a fair deal. If you accept the settlement, it was a fair deal enough for you to take it.

Question for GM users - Has anyone ever messed with saving/loading using data structures? I'm trying to make a pretty simple save/load system, that can just recall objects, their coordinates, and a "state" variable.

For example, if you cut a tree down, the game should be able to save and recall that there is a tree, its x/y, and whether it is cut or not.

At the moment I have a code that iterates through all of the objects that need saved, writes their information to a row in a ds_grid, then increases the grid height by 1 for the next entry. It then uses ds_grid_write() to output that as a string.

I'm running into some trouble reading that string back in, however, as I'm not sure how I'm supposed to tell the game how big of a grid it needs to read that data back in, since you must create a grid to store the data you're reading back in. If I could figure that out, I think this save/load would work pretty well.

Any suggestions or advice? I see most people recommending using ds_maps for saving, but I don't see how that would work since it only supports key/value pairs, so I'm not sure how you would use that to save an object with multiple keys (x, y, state, etc.)

Well, first of all... no. I have Clickteam Fusion 2.5, and as long as I have the sprites, I can fucking develop movement and proper animation to go along with it. Undertale has that issue sometimes, animation doesn't appear correctly, I also have GM:S and I have first hand experience with GM:S not loading animations on-time. Clickteam Fusion has no problem with that, Along with it having built in functions to help stop and end other animations and bring them to a halt. They're called animation directions, and if you are trying to get your character to start another animation, but you don't want it to just jolt into animation pose, the animation directions are for you. You can create a perfectly loopable walk cycle for your walking animation, and make a new direction frame for your still frame. This new direction can be a single frame of the character going from still to walking. Then, you can setup in the event editor that when *insert button* is pressed, the character animation switches direction, and it'll play the animation (real easy to blend this way by only having a single frame for in-between animations, but you can have more frames) and then after the animation plays (if it is one frame, that'll be basically no time at all) it'll switch to the walking animation. Then, you can set it to where if *button* is pressed, the character moves in a certain direction. Perfect movement and animation.

That isn't the same as free though. Even though the software has been abandoned the company that owns the IP for it hasn't abandoned it. Not in terms of money, no. He's talking out his butt.

It's only illegal if they coerce him to sign it or it has things like 'kill this dude as well, kill yourself, go steal from this store' etc. Threatening to sue him if he doesn't settle is not coercion. Trying to settle for a high price isn't coercion. If anything, that's 'the cost of doing business' in that arena.

A court isn't going to overturn or object to any settlement those lawyers are going to offer - especially if they tell the court 'we're suing now for what we asked for then'.

Any idea guys here?
How do you go about developing an idea.

Do you just write down small tidbits you come up with and hoard a ton of them or try to expand on it while the trail is still hot on your mind.

I keep hopping over to notepad to write down things but never go through with actually finishing the thought and then I just forget whatever the fuck I was thinking about.

How do I stop doing that, it's annoying.
motivation is hard

I usually can remember my ideas so I don't need to write them down immediately.
If I want to take quick notes I write down keywords to help me remember, it's usually enough.
>Plumber, princess, turtles.
When I want to flesh it out I actually write paragraphs in detail. This helps me see mistakes and come up with more things and also allows me to send my ideas to other people in a way they can understand.

I've spent most of my time at work today daydreaming/developing the setting of my RPG, what has transpired in it's world, and why it is the way it is, so it would make some sense logically, to the player.

Haven't written a single word yet, but when I do I'll do a timeline and race and faction descriptions for starts, then I'll start mapping out points of interest and writing in more detail about things that will directly effect gameplay.

The most important thing is to not have a single list of entities. That way you don't end up iterating through the whole thing for operations that most entities don't implement, and you can reduce the amount of dynamic dispatch (virtual method calls) you use.

Your leg bones are backwards anon, the base of the upper leg bone should be up in the hip area, with the tip going down to the knee, which should be connected to the lower leg bone.

If you switch your view from b-bones back to octahedral the thicker part of the bone is the base.

Should be base of upper leg bone at the hip, base of lower leg bone at the knee, base of foot bone at the ankle.

Then your IK foot bone should be disconnected from the mesh, Deform toggled off. And placed sticking out from the ankle (usually pointing backwards, as in opposite direction the character is facing)
