Little GTA(1/2)-style car mechanic. Blue blocks to give you an anchor as to the position of the car in the world

Controls:

Up Arrow - Forward
Down Arrow - Backward
Left arrow - steer left
right arrow - steer right
space - brake

Tell me how you guys feel about how it steers/controls. I'm thinking of making the fulcrum of the steering a bit closer to the center of the car (not at the center though. Fulcrum must be in the rear)

Doing some clean up scripting, changed the way item tooltips are handled - originally it created a new object every time it moused over. Now it uses the same tooltip object but just disables it when you leave the slot and activates it and changes the info when you mouse over a new one.

This is a change that is completely unnoticable from the players perspective - outside of fixing a very rare bug that sometimes led to the tooltip not unloading correctly.

What's the appropriate way to deal with on button being used in multiple contexts? For example, "E" is my goto "use" button. The psuedocode is like

You can easily screw up performance in 2d by ending up with too many drawcalls due to how you've structured your code. A 2D game can easily put out 500 drawcalls per frame in a scenario like this, which means that old computers would perform pretty poorly.

Call/response is really just 'here's a key for interpreting what I'm about to tell you and giving me a response. Here's my call- what's your response?'

You're trying to have a conversation through a mutually shared cipher.
One side gives you 'a call' and you use the cipher to interpret it and give an according response.

From your spoiler I can see it was more of a reduction puzzle, where you eliminate options until you're left with a singular answer. However, reduction puzzles don't really work until the solver sees what you're going for and can be easily mistaken as more of a cipher than a reduction puzzle which is what happened here.

I presumed you were giving me an answer key to interpret what the top row of flowers but really you were just using that row as the needed contrast to provide the correct answer. Categorizing the puzzle for the solver in some fashion will help a lot of people come to that answer a lot faster.

Personally I don't like puzzles that obfuscate what their intended solution path is - it ought be obvious and if it can't be obvious, should be in some way explained. For me the fun isn't in the 'what sort of puzzle is this', it's 'how does I resolve this, knowing how the thing works'.

I have a 2d character walking through a 2d room in a house similar to castlevania.

You could always use an array or ds_grid to store room id's. If your engine is flexible enough, some of the data structures can be shuffled, making randomizing the rooms easier.

Just assume the player's position is a cell in that grid, depending on what room he's in, and if the player exits through the East door, it checks what room ID is stored in the next room over in the grid.

That wasent me that posted the song, the last one was suppose to be inspired by the witness where the puzzle gets increasingly more complex as you go on and now at the end there is a flower with two elements you have to match instead of one. Tangentially related: I love The Witness but the open-endedness of the map caused the progression to be pretty wonky sometimes, I had no idea how to solve some of the puzzles with new mechanics because I apparently didn't follow the "right" progression where those new mechanics are actually explained so I ended up bruteforcing them since they weren't intuitive at all.

Been inspired after demo day, thanks for all the feedback everyone.

And since some fags called me a whodev, here's some --[PROGRESS]--

-Changed movement, there's no more astroid acc/dec, movement is much more responsive allowing more interactive dodging.
-Enemy bullet speeds slowed down when slowmotion isnt triggered, allowing easier build up of energy
-Enemy grenade enlarged 3x, making them big explosive green balls
-Fixed a bug with the animated HUD
-More screenshake when player takes damage
-Started on enemy 3, a shotgun guy. See webm for shooting animation

basically the problem you're having is that your character joints are feedback looping they're restraints. you need to mess with your mass, spring, and damper values until it stops spazzing. if you can avoid going crazy with linear joint values that helps a lot as well as reaching any linear limit can set off a chain reaction of spazz.

I've shown it few posts ago. I usually post about once a week. Basic premise is that the time flows only when you close your eyes. Your eyes get tired, so you blink at regular intervals (of course you can blink on demand earlier). The idea is that certain actions, presence of enemies, some items, they can affect how often you have to blink - forcing the player to think fast and react.

I want the whole game to be centered around the mechanic, making blinking something akin to a turn. World-wise I want to contain the whole game in a big mansion, you come in for some reason, discover that time is fucked up, have to collect keys and solve puzzles all resident evil style to get out / solve the mystery / fight the spooky monsters / whatever, I didn't think that far into the future.

And no, surprisingly this was not inspired by doctor who.

By using mixels tastefully. Everything, including the camera, doesn't lock to a pixel-perfect position while in motion, but when they stop they slowly lerp to the closest rounded coordinate. You can see for example as the blood falls it always lands exactly aligned, but as it's falling it's not always aligned.

Programmer here. Those black outlines you see are likely for dick sucking purposes. There is an RGB value that acts as a way of telling the game to suck my dicj When the renderer gets gets that color value, it gets all hot and bothered OOOHHH ANON I WANNA SUCK YOUR DICJ and well, essentially I am being led on by the game and there's nothing I can do about it.

2 items under the obj_item_parent parent

obj_solid, obj_player and obj_item_parent all collide with eachother

when the player picks up an item ( it holds it to the side of him), it cant move because it collides with the item
so i turned off collision with the item parent while holding an item
but now as expected i cant collide with the other items under the obj_item_parent

how can i structure this better? i think having a parent item for collisions will save me a ton of code meaning i can add items without worrying about rewriting collisions each time.

the last collision block of code i set the picked up items variable to 0, then tried to check if the variable of the meeting object's "colliding" is anything but 0, but its still not colliding with the other item objects.

Move the duplicated code into variables before doing the tests. Maybe even move the more complicated tests into their own function with a snappy name so you know exactly what it does.

I am trying to remove the duplication, but I am running into an issue in that I have no idea what any of your variables mean and I don't have comments on what each thing is doing.

Try and use nice descriptive names for variables so that it is obvious what is going on. 'offset', 'pdir' and 'hspd' are kind of opaque, don't you think?

every object has an hspd and vspd, which is how they move.

pdir is the players direction, 1 is facing right and -1 is facing left

offset is what i use to change the collision for the item thats picked up.

obj_player.offset = round(point_distance(obj_player.x,obj_player.y,obj_player.itemholding.x,obj_player.itemholding.y));

so if the item is 32x32, the player will not collide 32 pixels longer in whatever direction the player is facing.

now that i think about it though, this seems like a pretty bad way to do it. perhaps i could keep the items collision, but remove the "collide with player" flag. of course maybe this will just produce the same issue i'm having now.

Untextured test of environment tile mesh stuff, to try and get a sense of space in the game.

I'm happy with it? I feel a finished version with more tiles to randomly chose from could work/look cosy, especially with more props and trees.

It is good idea to give these things longer names. The only time I would use shortened names like this is if it were a really maths heavy algorithm, which this is not.

Here is some ideas on how to remove some duplication, but without knowing intent, this is as far as I can get. The thing with these problems is you want to compartmentalise the things you are doing into functions so that you can reason about what is going on in english, rather than fighting with the syntax. Do you see?
