What is some people's problem with Spark of Life, exactly? I'm far from a Nicolefag (Much like Rotor I just didn't care much for her pre-reboot) but I've read this arc at least twice and I thought it was pretty interesting and great on its own. My only frustration was that Phage kind of felt like wasted potential and Nicole sort of ended her immediately after going super, but otherwise I actually really liked her here, and her story with Dr. Ellidy.

Because you can get rid of the entire arc and nothing significant changes. We're told Nicole is supposed to be a neural net to save Nikki, but instead of doing anything with that interesting we're immediately told that it means nothing, that Nicole is a separate individual, and that information is completely irrelevant. We're introduced to Phage but aside from learning she's a program under Eggman's control (total shocker right?) we know nothing about her. Ellidy and Sally get into a fight over whether Nicole is a person but that's completely hollow because everyone else we've met so far treats Nicole as a person, so Ellidy just comes across as an uppity curmudgeon. The only thing of note the arc does is introduce the Red Star Rings and Overclocked Nicole but she does nothing to actual earn that upgrade, it's as simple as "Sally inserts a different ring." Most other arcs usually set something up regarding the overarching plot in addition to having their own self-contained plots, but Spark of Life does nothing, no development is made, and it generally just feels like filler.

A number of your complaints are pretty valid, but I don't think it being "filler" is an issue - it's evident that this arc exists just to shed some light on Nicole's origins as of the reboot.

The arc expands on and provides some fine characterization for Nicole and Sally, which I thought was cool. We learn several things, and the way we learn them is interesting enough. Nicole clearly harbors some frustration towards who she once was. Her creator evidently had an entirely different purpose in mind for her. In this arc we gain an insight into the way she sees herself among her friends and the events leading up to her growth, and learn that she became who she was in part because of her care for Sally. And towards the end we see she has some sort of guilt about the whole ordeal.

Backstory isn't "meaningless", and characterization isn't either, because it offers a new perspective in which we may view a character. The character doesn't always need to change, but our perception of them can. In the main series, we've seen Nicole often by Sally's side to comfort her, and there was also a moment where Nicole thanked Sally for reminding her about the greater things in the world. Before this arc we wouldn't have totally understood why they always seemed to stick so close, or why Nicole seems to occasionally "struggle" with her ability to feel, but now we have a much better idea of what makes her tick and her relationship with Sally.

I'm sure a large portion of the frustration with this arc may come from the fact that this is meant to be a reboot, and if anyone has read the preboot comics then they'd know what to expect with Nicole. But from the standpoint in which we are MEANT to view the story (that is, from #252 onwards we know very little about these characters, just that they're in a fighting crew with Sonic), it does its job well in giving insight on the walking talking gameboy who we always see with Sally.

Here's the thing though, we're immediately told in the arc itself that the backstory which is set up by the arc is completely irrelevant because it doesn't change who Nicole is as a person. We got relevant character development in The Light In The Dark. We got Nicole's relevant backstory in her origins issue. There is absolutely nothing in Spark of Life that's relevant to Nicole's characterization or development outside of the arc itself, and that's why it's filler.

The problem there is that Eggman wasn't the only active plot point at the time. The super genesis wave was a lazy resolution, but it did effectively wrap up/end EVERYTHING. If you were to just end the comic instead with Eggman being defeated and sally becoming organic again, you've still got let open and unresolved the following stories:

>Evil Tails and Evil Sally scheming
>Finitivus scheming
>Naughs is still king of Metropolis
Even if they canceled or delayed world's collide, they wouldn't have been able to finish that all up... at least probably.

I feel that if Light In The Dark was expanded to a full 4-part arc it would accomplish everything that Spark Of Life was supposed to do in a better way. You don't need convoluted backstories that just amount to fluff or pages full of flashbacks in order to tell an effective story.

Sonic fans in a nutshell are hard to please.

In fact people in general are getting harder and harder to please. People have become more critical and more cynical. Because of such. Game Qualities/Releases seem to be pushed out faster with more bugs and unfinished products. Before 2004. Games were more or less full products as intended but as the years passed on. Games have become more hollow and more empty as in the case of them being not fully developed to cater to people who enjoy a full entertainment experince.

Tell me /sthg/ does the recent Sonic games fill you with the thought that the titles that have been coming out post 2004 have in fact not felt fully fleshed out and more over underdeveloped?

I could say as early as 1996 that most games too have the feeling of being under developed. Considering the cost and the time put forward onto such projects.

About Sonic, I'm not sure people trashing the new games are fans to begin with. Sonic is an easy ticket of playing the video game decadence expert. "Muh Sonic must be fast and easy and hard and being fast is shallow so Sonic sux after Genesis". Next we'll learn that Sonic CD sucks because time travel is not Sonic.

Gens was good but felt like a nostalgia demo. Lost World felt like some leaked prototype. What the Sonic IP lacks is confidence IMHO, but I think it should just take the Unleashed/Colors/Gen formula and add many characters. And avoid the goofy, randumb-bordering tone. Keep it cartoon-for-10yo-serious.

But I'm afraid Sega might just try to copy Mario again and again.

I am posting this again to catch some more ideas--the ideas I received last thread were pretty good and have been noted.

/sthg/, I'm making a short 2-5 minute clip and I need some ideas. I used to do stop motion stuff when I was younger (think Wallace & Gromit) and I have nothing to show for it, even though I was really good at it and accumulated a lot of knowledge and skills, also having had a lots of untapped potential. I know it sounds arrogant but I'm just being real here, so hear me out.

I haven't quite decided what I'm making it based on--the plan at the moment is for it to be based on the Sonic 2 ending, with Tails witnessing the Death Egg's destruction and flying up to catch Sonic. Animation-wise, it is doable.

Do any of you have any ideas of a scene from Sonic that I could animate? Preferably something from the classic era or the Archieverse since those are the only ones that I honestly give a shit about. Angel Island fight? Silver Sonic on the comics' Death Egg? Any scene that sticks out in your mind, drop me an idea, or whether the Sonic 2 ending would be fine.

I assure you that this will be high in quality and made with care and attention to detail, spending years working on it day by day, hopefully released for Sonic's 30th Anniversary in 2022.

Future Eggman kills Classic Sonic thus wiping out Current/Future Sonic. Tails/Knuckles lose all memories of him but in lieu of what the Doctor has done. They become the new MC and team up to crush Dr.Eggman once and for all and gain hold of the technology he has to once again right the many wrongs that history (in the game) has done.

Not just that. Shadow is purely on Dr.Eggmans side without any clue to who Sonic is and mainly becomes his right hand henchman due to history wrapping that Eggman has done.
Eggman of the future rewrote history so much to a point that the entire world becomes a dystopia. Leading much into the scene that Crisis City has become but mostly in burning rubble and gigantic robots plaguing the landscape.

TLDR: Sonic gets shafted about 2/5 % of the game and other characters gets to take lead control in game. To do battle with a more Time Warping/controlling Dr.Eggman who figuratively *WIPED OUT* Sonic from Existance and no one but him would know.

I mean to me, not as bad as most people said, but even on it's own, it was a massive downgrade. It was slow and has a few frustrating shits like the hamster wheel and the caveman riddle. I might even said that if it wasn't for the story and characters for getting my attention, I would've quit half-way through. Think something like Sonic and the Black Knight. I'm not saying SatBK is bad, I'm just saying that both gameplays are mediocre that some may hate them or enjoy/tolerate them. They both have stories that are kind of like their saving grace for people who are interested to keep playing. However, I do see some people who also hate SPM's story, so that's one thing to hate the game entirely. Also, think Sonic Chronicles with those problems.

I wish Generations had been like a true big anniversary game.
If they felt a need to make it a nostalgia trip, there should have been a CD level. 3DBlast. Secret Rings, Black Knight, the Advances and Rushes.
There could have been so much more.

One of the things I hated about Chronicles was the lack of branching dialogue and story. Bioware did wonders with that on the Mass Effect series. For example, Sonic can either be his normal nice self or an absolute dick, but being an absolute dick doesn't change Sonic's friends' reactions in the long run. The option might as well not even be there.

Never played it myself, but I used that as an example of "enjoy the story, skip the game" where the story seems to be more interesting or put in more effort than the actual gameplay itself. Sonic Battle might be an example, too, but unlike the others I've mentioned, it's gameplay is pretty fun. However, this doesn't speak for everyone since the story no matter how much effort it's put in might not be everyone's taste since they'll either hate it or just don't care and want to actually play the game.

Sonic Battle is a bit samey though once you gain hold of the Ult Attacks soon enough due to RNG.
The story is alright but its pretty much filler how Emerl had to fight over and over much less some of them have that Get KO once that round is over. shit that is pure frustrating unless you get the right attack cards.

They were uninspired but still better than the Genesis version. I prefer the PC special stages over the Saturn, and being on PC means you can just mod in Genesis music if you want to (I'm fine with the Saturn/PC soundtrack though). Same reason why Generations is best on PC over PS3/360.

I'm late but you're probably totally right and ultimately I would have preferred that route (either that, or have Nicole actually be Nicci, with previously unknown access to her memories). I personally enjoyed Spark of Life and as a whole really liked seeing Nicole's backstory and the exact events leading up to her creation, as well as her musings as she deals with her creator. While you do argue that Light in the Dark accomplished what SoL did already, I don't think it hurts to elaborate on any of Nicole's thoughts at all, which is what Spark of Life did. It was flawed and I definitely get you when I say I understand how it could have been done so much better, with more lasting consequences and the like, but I don't think what we got was awful by any means. Spark of Life simply adds more, and I don't think the "more" it added killed or hurt her character in any way. Definitely needed to be improved, however.
