Short mini-theory/headcanon:

Sonic/Tails collecting the 6 Chaos Emeralds in Sonic 1/Tails' Adventures gave them a slight upgrade/level up/boost in power.

Sonic & Tails collecting all seven Chaos Emeralds in Sonic 2 gave them both an even greater boost in power, and Sonic gains the ability to go Super. At this point, Sonic is sort of on the exact same level as Knuckles (although whether or not Knuckles can go super as well at this point in time is unknown, possibly not able to).

In Sonic 3 & Knuckles, Sonic & Tails reunite the 7 Chaos Emeralds with the Master Emerald, restoring and reawakening their true power which bonds them together in perfect harmony, and as a result Sonic & Tails are both given an even greater boost in power, putting them above Knuckles (hence why they beat Knuckles relatively easily despite Knuckles punching the super out of Sonic beforehand).

In Knuckles' story of S3:K, Knuckles reunites and restores all the Emeralds like Sonic & Tails did, and gains his own boost in power, putting him on equal standing with Sonic once again.

In all honesty, I miss the Advance series, Battle included.

Advance 1-3 gave us a new take on the Classic formula, with each character having more new moves, and thus new ways to move about the level, and the additions of Boost Mode and the Tag System only expanded on this further. True, the level design overlooked more momentum-based aspects of the classic trilogy to facilitate more platforming-centric level design, but they were still some of the best 2D Sonic titles to date.

I'm really hoping they get ported overseas to the Switch VC.

In Japan, the Sonic Advance series was distributed by Sega. In America, it was THQ. Since THQ went bankrupt, most of their properties have gone to Nordic Games. No one really knows who owns the international publishing/distribution rights for the Sonic Advance series.

Though this is wrong I can see where they're coming from. Romhacks have essentially spoiled us. Mania not only has the burden of being the "new age classic successor" but is also being compared to fan works. Between 1 through 3 & K, 2D Sonic had major additions and crazyness after each game:
>Sonic 1 with decent platforming and speed sections
>Sonic 2 added multiple attempts to getting emeralds in a single stage, spindash, 2P co-op, 2P versus, and Super Sonic as incentive to get all the emeralds
