Same way you fight other things. Hit them and don't get hit by them.
>>

The best way to fight beak dogs (or any other animals) is to hit them with weapons until they die.
If you managed to get killed by one, you probably don't have very good equipment, or have low defensive skills.

Annie's manager here.

Gotta say, this is a puzzle. I had an obvious answer to Brunhilda, but figuring out a good answer to Efeye's build has me a little stumped. The answer to Ecstasy was to outskill him, but despite the pretty significant point difference between Annie and Efeye I don't think I can match her(he) in skill.

Just wanted to you let you know, I'm having a lot of fun puzzling this out.

Wearing armor doesn't make you less sneaky as far as I know, but it wouldn't have made a difference. Joint damage has pretty much obsoleted armor. Especially when fighting a larger opponent.

Force translation doesn't care if the originating attack was edged or blunt. Any attack that hits limbs or head is likely to result in debilitating damage to the nearest joint whether it did any damage initially or not, unless the thing that hit you was considerably smaller.

Was just a suggestion. I actually have very little knowledge on how combat mechanics work in DF so i might just be spewing a whole lot a bullshit but it seems logic that if you can't outskill her(him) this time then the next best thing is to win through attrition and being naked probably isn't going to help you do that if you get shanked.

Anyway. I'm rooting for you. Don't let Annie's tournament arc end in tragedy so we can move on to the inevitable beach filler arc.
>>
>>169042093
armor is basically useless with the game mechanics how they currently are.
you might deflect a blade, but you'll take joint damage that will basically disable you.

Yeah that's completely wrong, if it's enough of a hit to do joint damage it would fuck that limb up WAY more and still do joint damage.

>>169042497
Hrm.
>>
>>169045170
It doesn't matter how much more the limb is fucked up. Joint damage to any joint from shoulder wrist will make you drop what the hand is holding. Joint damage to any joint from hip to ankle will make you fall down. The only time that's not the case is in that narrow range of force where the tendon/ligament is bruised rather than torn. A limb hit in that range isn't going to debilitate the limb anyway even if it's uncovered.

>>169045990
Force translation doesn't always equal "you're crippled on that side" though, but if you don't have armor on you get to encounter a whole lot more "and the severed part sails off in an arc" and hits which don't cut it off will still do joint damage.

With armor you're much harder to delimb, can get "but the attack glances away", can get "but the attack is deflected by the armor", and the armor itself is going to soak up some of the momentum even when it doesn't directly prevent all damage, which means: yep, less joint damage.

>so are invasions still unlikely? what was the fix that made it so that invasions and sieges happen a shitload more often? Just change the pop cap of goblin civs/sites or what?
invasions work as they should now, taking time for the armies to actually travel to your fort.

>has the game gotten any harder in the past year?
The game? no, but force now transfers through armor somewhat, meaning you can now take damage even through full adamantine. applies to everyone though, so combat is just more deadly overal.
>>
>>169052620
how would one kill them then? arrows and sneak attacks?

>>169052639
I often get "sieges" which are a dozen goblins getting into the map and then leaving without doing anything, I still haven't figure what that's all about.

Other than that I get sieges quite frequently.
>>
>>169052837
Well, candy blocks damage much better, attacks with crappy enough weapons vs superior material can just get deflected a lot, heavier armor helps soak up momentum though, and the stuff that doesn't get deflected/soaked can get passed up the limb to a joint and do damage, plus the armor can get damaged unless it is artifact quality.

It's like you want Grandpa Marx to rise from the grave, spread his glorious beard like a pair of wings and fly over there to lay the smack down about how the actual socialist revolution was supposed to take place over a timescale of centuries and include a point where technology advances enough to automate most forms of labor in order to free the individual to pursue a life of study and contemplation or craft and construction for it's own sake, rather than at the whims of some capitalist society.

I mean I'm a goblin civ so I figure its the sort of thing they'd do. I mean sure they cooouuuld smooth out the rest of the fort, but then that would remove a factor by which they could compare themselves favorably to their worse-off peers. The nobilityy deliberately keep the rest of the fort in shoddy condition to make their own smooth and opulent rooms look that much more extravagant.

Just started learning how to play this game. Finally just got around to military. We all have iron weapons. We've got plump helmets going with beds for everyone.

But one thing I'm really struggling with is keep track of all of my dworfs and what they're doing. My military just killed some goblin thing and I couldn't keep track of the fight at all. Also, if a dwarf is hurt how do you heal them? Do they get medical assistance with some sort of labor? Also if a dworf is doing a job that I don't want them to do is there a way to prioritize what I want them to do?
>>
>>169050245
I think you may be failing to block "all" of the dragonfire. Maybe being in the cave deflects/funnels multiple dragonfire to you? Testing in open space in arena mode I got "You block the dragonfire" multiple times in a row after one firebreath.
>>
>>169073609
>But one thing I'm really struggling with is keep track of all of my dworfs and what they're doing. My military just killed some goblin thing and I couldn't keep track of the fight at all.
Pause a lot. Don't forget you can view combat logs with [r], and advance time by 1 tick with [,] (or was it [.]? one of the two). But yeah, thats one of the flaws of fortress mode. Not being able to control the speed you see fights at in any intuitive way beyond bashing that manual advance button.
> Also, if a dwarf is hurt how do you heal them? Do they get medical assistance with some sort of labor?
You can designate a zone to be a hospital just as you would designate any other zone. You'll need to slap a few beds in there, a table or two, a traction bench (http://dwarffortresswiki.org/index.php/DF2014:Health_care) and a container to hold the medical supplies in. Once you have a hospital all injured dwarves will flop onto the floor like they were born to play soccer and wait for someone to come whisk them away to the hospital, where they'll wait until someone with the appropriate medical labors enabled fixes them up. You can enable all the medical labors on any dwarf you want, skill level only increases the speed at which they fix your dwarves, not the effectiveness.
>Also if a dworf is doing a job that I don't want them to do is there a way to prioritize what I want them to do?
You can just suspend the job in the units menu, or the [j]obs menu. This overrides everything else until you unsuspend the job.

can i fuckin post yet
>>
>>169073609
>one thing I'm really struggling with is keep track of all of my dworfs and what they're doing
Pause the game and press [u] to check what everyone's doing. Don't forget to set [H]otkeys to zoom to important areas. Eventually as the population rises you do sort of lose track of individual dwarves but that's fine as long as people are doing what you want them to do generally. In a fight you can pause and press [,] (1 tick) or [.] (10 ticks) to advance time slowly bit by bit and then check the combat logs periodically.

>if a dwarf is hurt how do you heal them?
make a hospital zone ([i] for zones) containing at least bed(s). You may also need traction benches. And yes they require certain labors (under Healthcare in the labor screen).

>is there a way to prioritize what I want them to do?
You can disable that labor on the dwarf, you can change the priority of jobs on workshops, and you can press [n] at a workshop for "Do task now!" which makes them prioritize it more heavily.

Problem is I'd have to sell everything I had to (probably) match Efeye, so I'd still be at a disadvantage in terms of equipment.

I figured I should just go for what might be most useful against a knife user: protecting the fight-ending vitals. a gladiator can still win a fight with a split open throat, but if they lose their ability to stand or hold a weapon they're a goner.

It's not like you'd actually be able to tell what's behind all those clothes
My theory is that desert elves are rivals to forest elves, and seeing Annie Mae as a menace, they kidnapped and brainwashed her brother into killing Annie Mae, but thought him to be a she because they didn't even know him. I mean, how do you confuse a baby's gender at birth throughout childhood, diaper after diaper? You just gotta check whether there's something hanging or a little hole. It'd make sense for the kidnapers not to bother checking that
Also, I expect all of this to be 100% wrong
>>
>>169095160
i've been thinking of it more that he was never captured at all, he just ran away to live out his dream of being a high-class assassin. then, when he caught wind of annie mae coming to "rescue" him, he assumed the worst: that she had come to slay him. thus, the entering the tournament to kill her.

that leaves plenty of room for a classic anime villain redemption ending, doesn't it?
>>

My first 40.x companion had some weird ass vendetta against any humans we'd come across, possibly killed a dwarf that was travelling home and was hell bent on avenging me after a pack of trans pandamen licked me. I became a bat after that.

Well folks, today marks the last day of the Dwarf Fortress Gladiator Tournament.

We shall finally discover who will earn the title of Champion of /dfg/. The gold and glory, not to mention a place in the Hall of Fame, will all belong to today's victor. Along the way, there have been many upsets. We have lost good friends, witnessed legendary battles, and seen spectacular triumphs. But now, the conclusion is upon us, and I can't help but feel a little melancholic.

And so, let us have a moment where we reflect on all the brave warriors who have fallen so far. Their steadfastness in the face of death, and brazen courage have marked us all. May they feast in the halls of Armok forever more...

.
.
.

Now, let us begin the final battle. Elf versus Elf. Sword versus dagger. The noble fencer versus the sly assassin. We shall witness their victory.

Neither combatant gave us any words, prior to starting the fight. Both chose to remain alone, contemplating the upcoming battle. I myself must agree that the common room has become awfully quiet since the beginning of the tourney, and it does not bode well to dwell on the past. Therefore, we shall move into the Grand Finale without further ado.

Begin.

The horn blows for a final time, and our brave finalists face each other.

"We don't need to fight, Efeye." Says Annie Mae. "Please, just tell me where he is."

The desert elf's eyes narrow into slits, and he remains silent.

"If I have to kill, or even torture you-" Annie Mae is interrupted by the assassin. His voice, raspy from disuse, comes out as little more than a whisper.
"There is no bargain to be had. I'm truly sorry, but you must die. I have no choice."

Grimly, Annie Mae falls silent and prepares herself for the fight of her life.

Faster than the eye can blink, Efeye bounds across the arena, his cloaks swirling about him. Steel sword against iron knives, the gladiators duel, their blades flashing with such frightening speed that sparks fly, but both of the deadly elves are so skilled in their art that neither is able to land the slightest cut.
The very floors and walls are scored, and the stones are slashed deeply by the incredible duel's frenetic clash. The fight continues, locked evenly, until Annie Mae miscalculates ever so slightly, and an iron blade tears into her! She is protected by her cloak from the worst of it, but the force of the blow sends her down, the very tendons in her leg torn! She cries out and scrambles back, and raises her hand just in time to deflect another knife aimed at her heart! Unrelenting in his offense, Efeye flings aside her arm and backhands her, sending the girl reeling back!

With blood trickling down her face, Annie Mae desperately fends off Efeye's frenzied strikes, as he whirls this way and that, raining attacks down upon her! Her cloak proves true, however, and the daggers cannot pierce the enchanted adamantine. Nonetheless, she is battered and flung about, and every desperate swing of her blade is easily parried or avoided by Efeye, who refuses to back down even for a moment.

"I. Cannot. Lose." Snarls Efeye from between clenched teeth. "I. Cannot. Let. You. Live!"

In his frenzied attack, Efeye darts forward recklessly, and lands a devastating strike on the gasping elf at his feet... But it was all a feint! Allowing herself to be painfully struck in the arm, Annie Mae takes advantage of the minuscule opening, and slashes at her cloaked enemy with her steel sword.

Screams are heard from the audience, and Efeye's arm is sent flying, Annie Mae's blade having sheared straight through the cloth, flesh and bone of her foe, sending a wash of blood to stain the arena floor. The ruthless assassin does not even spare a glance at the stump of his arm, now gone at the elbow, and uses his remaining dagger to hack three times before his foe can even react!

Annie Mae screams in agony, and her leg parts from her body , a torn bloody ruin. Gritting her teeth and ignoring the blood trickling down from her face, she swings once more, past the dagger, past the cloaks, and parts the meat on Efeye's closest limb like wet tissue. Efeye tumbles to the ground, his right leg falling off in a spray of crimson!

The crowd are roaring, either cheering or calling out in horror at the horrific mutilation of their gladiators. Uncaring for his own condition, Efeye flings himself like a wild beast at Annie Mae, and... Armok above! He plunges his dagger into the side of Annie Mae's head! The blade sticks, but Annie Mae, her face a mask of blood and tears, stares into the eyes of her foe.

In a voice menacing with the fury of a thousand storms, she breathes an oath.

"There is only one reason I fight in this pit of violence and decay. To save my brother. YOU WILL NOT TAKE HIM FROM ME!"

The elven sword smashes into Efeye, who, though protected from harm by his helm, is sent flying back. His dagger dislodging itself with a squelch, blood immediately pours down the side of Annie Mae's head, mixing with the fibre of her cloak and causing the brilliant blue to turn a dark, sickly colour, like a painful bruise. The tip of her ear left behind, she attacks, her eyes overflowing with anger and death.

Recovering, Efeye attacks, his own face contorted with bloodlust. The two trade blows, once more locked in a bloody stalemate, until Efeye deflects his opponents sword, and, tearing the veil from his face chomps down, immobilising her arm! He actually tears into the flesh with his teeth, and blood spurts out as an artery is torn! Annie Mae cries out in pain, and tears her arm away, cradling it against herself. All this reckless exertion has been taxing, and with the blood still pumping from his leg, Efeye grows paler and paler. Still attacking in his berserk state, he tries to finish the fight, but almost every single attack of his is barely avoided or is deflected by the sword or cloak. Twice, he crushes Annie Mae's foot between the stones and his dagger, but nothing can bring the enemy down.

Soon, Efeye is almost a deathly shade of white, and can no longer hold his weapon. He slumps, cradling the bleeding stump of his arm, and wearily looks at Annie Mae, his eyes bleary and unfocused. His face is exposed, revealing the nut-brown skin of the desert elves, and a handsome face marred by gore.

"I've... I've failed. I cannot stop the bleeding." Tears begin rolling down his cheeks, parting the sweat and blood that covers his face. He leans back, whispering. "I'm so sorry, my dear sister..."

Annie Mae crawls over to him, her sword forgotten.
"What are you talking about? Tell me! Where is my brother! You know! I was told you knew!!"

Efeye coughs, and looks at his rival. Eyes full of pity, he tells her...

"He... He was taken. Just like my own sister-" He wheezes, struggling against oblivion. "The... snatchers..."

"What do you mean? Your family was kidnapped too!? Where? Who are the snatchers!?" Annie Mae desperately clasps the dying elf's hands between hers, as though she was cradling his very soul.

"Goblins... I was told... I would only get her back if... If I could kill you…" Efeye smiles, and looks at his mutilated body.

Whispering gently, the tear streaked face of Annie Mae leans in.

"..Who told you this..?"

"..."
"…….Båx..."
"….."

The word escapes with the softest of sighs, and the desert elf's eyes close. He stiffens, his breathing slows, and soon, stops. Efeye has passed into the void.
...Congratulations, Annie Mae. You are the Grand Champion of /dfg/.

Victory: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TbhAaDdQFY0

We have our champion folks. And it looks like we also have a villain.

Was Båx the mastermind behind this whole affair? Did he set the two most dangerous elves in the land against each other? For what purpose? To weaken their armies, perhaps. Or to save himself the risk of fighting both. Either way, he is gone now. After winning the Grand Royale, he vanished, along with all his gear.

Annie Mae has also gone, staying just long enough for the medicinal priests to stitch up her wounds, before she too departed, hunting down the goblin who stole her brother and forced her to kill all those innocent people.

I wonder, shall we ever see them again? It is a story, apart from the Tournament. Or perhaps the Tournament was merely a part in their much larger story. We can only guess at what the future holds.

Annie Mae might be the winner, but there was no glory to be found in battle today.

Dammit. When did this all become so real. It was just supposed to be a fun thing where we'd mash silly characters against each other and see who'd come up on top. Not a depressing massacre.

Sorry friend, I didn't expect it either to be honest. I was planning for it to be like the last tournament, all fun and games, with silly deaths and a cool champ

I never meant for it to be this way...

Anyway, thanks for all the fun guys. I enjoyed doing this a lot, but I'm pretty burned out, so it feels good to fade back into anonymity and throw away the trip.

Never ever visit /mämmi/, it's the worst place to be on the entire internet.
Also 80% of Finnish people speak good English and 98% speak some English so if you really just want to come and visit some archeological sites, like all those hundreds of dinky caves, and speak with fellow Finnish archeologists then there is no need to learn Finnish.
Only reason to learn Finnish is if you plan to live here for the rest of your life.
Also if you're interested in Finland I recommend you look into the wikipedia article on our history and also into the Kalevala, our national epic.

I have mixed feelings about the tournament. On the one hand it's fun to make the gladiators, build them up, and pit them against other fighters. On the other hand, turning into an anime simulator and filling it waifus and memes takes all the fun out of it for me. Only one of the meme gladiators had anything to do with DF, and then tourneyanon indulges the f/a/gs and /d/eviants with a babby's-first-jrpg-tier narrative. I liked the first tourney a lot more.
>>
>>169114351

I liked the first more as well, but I didn't dislike this one. I do feel like the next will be pure waifu and meme gladiators though, this one at least had some "serious" competitors.

Biggest issue with the tourney right now is the faggotry it leaves behind, we could do just fine without the waifu sperging.

There are bound to be several universities/institutions in Sverige that offer courses to learn Finnish.

Yeah, probably. I don't think my uni (Gothenburg) offers it, though.
>>
>>169115187
There's nothing wrong with talking about gladiators, I actually enjoy it a lot because it often evolves to skill distribution and tactics, which is interesting and related to dwarf fortress.

How broad Annie's hips are and whether it's a male or female is not related to dwarf fortress, it's an excuse to shitpost.
>>

Then you should find out which do and contact those and contact your university for receiving credit for any courses you complete elsewhere.

There are probably more universities on the western and southern coast like Vaasa that you could try but I'm not sure.

I take it you're that militant anti-meme poster to tried to stir up shit earlier?

I like memes personally, and I will keep using them in the general. As long as it is on-topic (and everything regarding the tourney is on-topic per definition), there's nothing wrong with it.
>>
Reminder that the correct way to play Dwarf Fortress is however you want.
Whether it's square or non-square, both is fine.
Whether it's ASCII, or graphics, both is fine.
Anyone who tells you to play with one or the other only is wrong.
However if you mod the gameplay, such as using Masterwork you're a shitter and should leave.

Well this tourney was pretty fun.

I have a few doubts about point distribution though, mainly that humans have less points than dwarves, elves or goblins. If I remember correctly, there were tests done before that showed humans weren't as good as the other races, I wanted to repeat these tests but make them more in depth.

I made each race fight the other one in 18 sets, each one of the sets had different skills or equipment than the others, here are the results:

http://pastebin.com/rjTeKee1

Now, conclusions, well, I just finished it and I haven't taken a good look at the results, I'll do that later, but I'll leave you the results so you can come up with your own.
>>
>>169117375
IIRC, when unskilled, Elves turned out to be superior to all other races according to those tests. I think it was the same when the fighters were given skills.

Maybe the outcome in the Tourney weren't so unexpected after all. Elves are simply the strongest.
>>
>>169073797
testing in the 1-wide tunnels of the arena I failed to replicate the issue

They have higher agility scores. And kinaesthetic, I think.
From the tests an earlier anon was doing, kin sense has quite an impact.
>>
>>169118047

I have a vague memory of an anon who did tests claiming that kinesthetic sense only had a marginal impact. In his experiments, however, intuition turned out to have a huge impact.

For the record, a lot of the meme characters were just roster fillers. The waifu shit is mostly a joke too (but who can argue with this erection?).

When (if?) there's a 3rd tournament I don't think I'll be submitting any joke/meme/waifu/whatever characters, I already have a couple of ideas for characters.
>>
>>169081550
Huh, seems like Li attacked Bax first.

What I don't understand is, if Li was wearing gauntlets, how did Bax manage to wound him anyway? When he hit the upper arm it makes sense since gauntlets don't protect that part, but as far as I know they do protect hands and lower arms, and yet Bax still managed to hit and wound that part, and not through force translation, or through the armor, in fact, when you strike someone with a weapon, and it goes through their armor, the message that pops us is that you wounded them through their armor, but it doesn't say anything about armor in that case.
>>
>>169119784
Now that I've paid more attention to it, it seems Li was only wearing a gauntlet on his right arm, since when Bax tries to stab him in his right hand the attack is deflected, but when he stabs him in his left hand it isn't.

Not that it matters anyway since Li was dead the moment Bax stabbed him in the left upper arm.

dogs are war trainable
birds lay eggs and breed fast enough for a meat industry

all 4 legged animals get you a lot of meat, bones and almost all of them produce milk

Set 18(steel short sword, steel shield and full steel armor and grand master swordsman, shield user, dodger and armor user skills)

Ok, let's take a look at the results now

Human vs Dwarf: Humans won set 5, 18, and had a draw in set 17.

I'd say humans are worse than dwarves, most of the sets were pretty close though.

Continued in next post
>>
>>169124732
Human vs Elf: Humans won set 2, 4, 5, 6, 12, 15, 18 and there was a draw in set 3.

Seems like Elves aren't that good in unarmed combat, they're much better with a sword. It seems giving human skills balances things out more or less.

Human vs Goblin: Humans won set 8, 9 and there was a drawn in set 2

The sets weren't as close as the dwarf ones. Goblins seem to do great if they wear weapons, a shield and armor.

I think humans are the weakest race.

Dwarf vs Human: see human vs dwarf results

Dwarf vs Elf: The dwarves won set 1, 2, 4, 5, 6, 10, 12, 14, 16, 17, 18 and there was a draw in set 11.

Dwarves seem generally better than elves.

Dwarf vs Goblin: Dwarves won set 2, 5, 6, 8, 14, 15, and there was a drawn in set 13

When both are using armor and weapons, the goblins seem to do better that the dwarves.

Elf vs Human: See human vs elf results

Elf vs Dwarf: See dwarf vs elf results

Elf vs Goblin: Elves won set 7, 8, 9, 13, 14, 15

Elves seem to do better in the sets where fighter have weapons and nor armo, while goblins seem to do better in unarmed combat and while using armor.

Goblin vs Human: See Human vs Goblin results

Goblin vs Dwarf: See Human vs Dwarf results

Goblin vs Elf: See Elf vs Goblin results

Mmmh, yes, it seems humans are the weakest race, I wouldn't say elves are the best race though, they don't seem to be better than dwarves or goblins.

I know this is pretty short and not very detailed, but I'm tired and I just wanted to make a quick post with some observations.

Tourneyfag here

To be honest, like I said before I didn't expect the tournament to turn out the way it did. A lot of the memery was due to the gladiators coming in slowly, and needing to fill out the roster. This also turned it into a bit of a waifu fest, not helped by the dominating spree of Annie Mae.

I was personally rooting for Brunhilda but the rng decided she would lose. If a different set of combatants reached the finals, we might have got something else entirely.

I also agree with one particular anon who called me out for being overly dramatic and flamboyant, but I'm just some mook on the internet, not an established (or good) writer.

All in all, I'd be more than pleased if someone else hosted the next tourney, and would happily throw in my own applicant.

But let's save that for a rainy day, a few months or so down the line.
>>
>>169125493
you also move crazy fast in DF tho. + your average open world game is more densely populated than DF
>>
>>169125149
Your results make sense. After the first tourney when we were talking about an attribute point buy system a couple of anons did some pretty extensive attribute trials, and strength, toughness and endurance (attributes which goblins and/or dwarves have more of than elves or humans) are more important than most (or all) other attributes. Humans cost more in tourney because they're larger, and the old tourney doc that was inherited from SA via reddit doesn't account for attributes at all, only size.

I've even seen towns in which 100% of the site area were filled with streets.
>>
>>169126132
I was trying not to be too critical of you personally. You adapted to the environment you found yourself in. Just giving my opinion. I appreciate the work you put into it even if the results weren't to my taste.
On a related note, I don't feel the roster filler gladiators were really necessary. We could have just had a smaller tourney. I was kind of taken aback when anon mentioned he had already entered 4 gladiators before I'd even had a chance enter my only one. It seems contrary to the spirit of the tourney when one guy is a quarter of it. And it's not like we lose anything by not having every slot filled within 24 hours of announcement. I know our community isn't huge, but it doesn't seem unreasonable that we could stick to a one-fighter-per-person policy, even if it means we have to wait a day or two longer to start. No one who cares enough enter a fighter is going to stop playing DF in that time.

I liked the serious tone, even though there were lots of memes. If the next tourney had more gladiators that weren't memes or waifus and with a nice backstory (doesn't have to be serious) it would be nice, I wouldn't mind one or two meme/waifu characters though, just not more than that.

You make a good point, and if there ever is another tourney, I agree that people should be restricted to one, or if absolutely necessary, two applicants. As it was, I guess I got a little impatient, being keen to start writing up. Also, the point system needs some more tweaks to be properly balanced so that we don't get too many instant losses.

I submitted a second but with the idea that it would only be entered as a backup if no other slots could be filled.
I guess it's hard to guage the timescales of everyone on here, but I think in future we could easily get away with a ~2 week registration period.

In the end it's up to the tourney manager as to timescales, so we'll take what we can.

Hey guys I want to play as an ant queen in adventure mode. How hard would it be to mod a reaction that makes me give birth to antmen and such? Like, in order to grow the colony. I could find an abandoned fortress and set up there, and populated with my bug swarm before waging war on the surface dwellers.

Is this doable?

>>169155992

Kinda. You can do it by building a fort with dwarves then bringing animal people adventurers to retire there, but you'll have to be a little lucky for ant people to have been integrated into a civ before or else add the tag [INDIV_CONTROLLABLE] to the ant person raws, but I'm not sure if that'd work. Be sure to take more than one queen and more than one drone, since sentient creatures need to marry regardless of what they are. You'd also be controlling it in fort mode so no luck there until the next version. Either that or you could figure out how Meph did his concubines way back in 34.11 and see if it can be applied to the drones.

You might be able to use DFHack to make yourself give birth (I know there is at least an impregnate command) but the result of that might be unstable in adventure mode.
>>
>>169156423

Pretty sure pathfinding already gets dwarves killed often enough to not warrant such a feature.

>>
>>169158609

Yeah, lots of major mods have buildings like that and IIRC you can use workshops in adventure mode. Again I don't know how well spawnunit or whatever it's called now will behave as expected here but I can't really foresee any problems besides the units you spawn not wanting to join your faction. It does support specifying group allegiance but your adventurer's group might not work in the same way as a "normal" civ or gang.

Actually, I might use this for the custom race I'm working on. On that note, do you think I should make it now or would I be better off making it after the update? Will the next update change civ and creature files to the extent that I'd need to rework the whole creature or what?

The only thing I know for sure will be different is that there will be agent related definitions in the entity raws. The update is still some time away and nothing you've proposed is impossible (difficult, but not impossible) right now, so you'd probably be better off doing the work now then integrating whatever changes come rather than just waiting Armok knows how long for The Toad to do his thing.

New devlog: http://www.bay12games.com/dwarves/

> Alright, I'm ready to move to dwarf mode for this release! The main features will be the ability to send dwarf squads off the map, artifact-based diplomacy with sieging forces and others, and artifact-interested questers and critters coming to the fort.

That'll have to start next month -- in a few days I'll be leaving for GDC. It was healthy for Bay 12 when I went there for the first time last year, so I figured I give it another go. I'll be back on the 4th, so there will be a delay on the monthly report and the Future of the Fortress reply.
>>
>>169173760
Fortress mode (2 months)
Kobold caves etc. (1.5 months)
Bugfixes etc. (1.5 months)
Pre-release testing/prep/misc.(1.5 months)

Sub-total: 6.5 months
Conferences/illness/etc. (1.5x multiplier)

Total: 9.75 months

Today being 2/23 that means approximately 12/16.

Well at least it's this year.
>>
>>169175049
What are the biggest bugs in df as of right now? Passive cave critters? Monster hunters? Stuck dwarves?
>>
>>169175572
Imo the adventure mode AI needs to be unfucked. The biggest bug is probably the wonky AI in adventure mode that produces weird things like people standing still while you behead them. Or people "ambushing" you then running away. Although it seems a little better now.

In fortress mode I guess the biggest bug is probably weapon traps causing crashes when their weapons break, and cave creatures spawning in a cluster clinging to a ceiling above a lake. Also I'd like to see the remelting for infinite metal exploit fixed. Fortress mode isn't as buggy as adventure mode imo.
>>
>>169175842
Also the bug where you can't become the ruler of a non-human site even if you kill the ruler.

And the glacier ice wall bugs.
>>
>>169175842
Also people in adventure mode camps never waking up, and crashes when approaching camps, and vaults being improperly generated.
>>
>>169176002
>vaults being improperly generated.
This.

About the coolest thing that can happen in current adv mode is when you get the message about a gobbo army marching upon your peaceful hometown, BUT you can save everyone if you go to the nearby vault.

Then the immersion gets 100% shattered as you realise that the vault doesn't have a slab due to a retarded bug, and your adventure ends there (although an adventurer strong enough to raid a vault would probably be able to kill off an entire gobbo army on his own).

Even if you do banish/bind the demon would that really affect the war though? My guess is that a goblin lord/lady would replace the demon and the bloodshed would continue as ever.
>>
>>169177296
Dude, have you read the legends entries for the gobbo wars?

Each battle begins with all the goblins getting massacred by the opposing army, then said opposing army gets BTFO by the demon.

As soon as a demon master is gone for a gobbo civ, it's all downhill for them.

That's good to know, thanks. Therapist always took longer to update than DFHack (probably because it's a stand-alone tool which needs to connect with DF externally (but for some reason the dfhack team always was much faster to adjust to simple changes in the memory layout, too)

I think dfhack has a lot more contributors. DT seems to be maintained by a single guy who hasn't been very active in the past 6 months.

Also, the windows version of df uses a new compiler, making things more complicated than just switching to 64bit.

Yeah, fuck those guys, and by extension myself, that'll teach me!

So I'm super fucking proud of this actually, because it is a really difficult thing to get working smoothly and consistently, yet I know there's probably several ways folks could improve the code layout, but dammit it's fucking cool doing it yourself, yanno?

To explain just a bit what the fuck I'm talking about: I had a script you could use to teleport yourself around by picking locations on the quest log map, right?

Well, you had to be in travel mode to do this, which isn't so bad, but sometimes you're stuck in the middle of a dark fort or something and just can't travel at all.

I did have an idea how to set myself into that mode with dfhack, but if you screw it up you can wind up stuck in the northwest corner of the map if it defaults to any of the 0/0 coordinates.

Figured I'd try to force a brief wait, but no quest log while resting, derp.

Then I got the order and shit worked out and studied the dfhack api on timeouts and whatnot, managed to get it where you run the script on foot with the quest log pulled up and initially it fails, but a "Ready to teleport!" message shows in the terminal indicating it worked.

Except sometimes the northwest corner thing happened, so while trying to track that down I ACCIDENTALLY MADE THE SCRIPT WORK RIGHT and then fucked it up and had to figure out what I did.

In short, from the quest screen it starts to push you into travel mode, dismisses the quest log, waits 15 frames, and then pops it back up so it just flickers out briefly, but most importantly you actually get teleported where you want to go first time you run it, which I had accepted I wouldn't even be able to do!

>>
>>169187661
Well, dfhack isn't a mod, more of a utility pack, but it's nice sometimes getting down to a basic just vanilla fort once in a while.

This script though, is something I wanted to do since I started figuring out how to write scripts and figured out I could move my army around in travel mode, so if vanilla is a decent blowjob, this script is a supermodel orgy on top of a ferrari or something, it's cheap and absurd, but it's damn sexy and a lot of fun.

>>169187832
Like I said above, ever had something in game where you thought "it would be so cool if I could do this" but figured even with dfhack and modding you wouldn't be able to get it to work? This was one of mine, that damn quest map tauned me for years with the promise of being able to use it to designate teleports but I never got close until just recently and now I actually completed the script.
>>
>>169187661
You should try dfhack. I wouldn't even consider it non-vanilla. There are features that modify gameplay, but they're disabled by default and nobody forces you to use them. DFHack is mostly UI improvement and bugfixes.

Yeah, there's not much you can do since so much of world-gen is unpacked at that point, for what it's worth I did go around and investigate all the stuff I could find that might help there but if you get close enough that you might conceivably be able to re-start world-gen it's gonna crash instantly the moment you breathe at it.

Also learned that while you CAN questport out of a dark fortress if you didn't try to travel and just went quest log > port out, should you try to demonstrate the "you cannot travel until you leave this site" message while, say, explaining what the script is, it doesn't work once that message has popped up. Gotta track down the site flag or something to disable that.
>>
>>169176227
The other problem is that if you have more than 50 years of history and go to the dark tower for an epic confrontation with the demon Lord the game shits itself with lag from the 10000 goblins, trolls and beakdogs living there

So, I'm fairly new to Dwarf Fortress and I got a bunch of questions.

I'm not really a fan of the whole digging underground thing.
Can I just build a fort out of the wood and stone I get?
Do trees grow back?
How do I aquire more seeds for my farms?
Can I still build forts in "Aquafier" lands?
>>
>>169192507
Yes you can.

Yes they do, but it's gonna take some time, trees give a lot more of wood now so you probably won't run out of wood, probably.

Gather plants or buy them from trade caravans.

Yes, you just have to be careful to not open it and cause a flooding.

If you're expecting it, they're a source of infinite water, power, mixed with magma it's all the obsidian you could want.

If you're not expecting it, they're a matter of "wait, where did all this water come from, why is everyone drowning? STOP DROWNING YOU COWARDS, FIGHT BACK, KICK THAT WATER IN THE NUTS" before the fort falls.

Also, same tip I give everyone: take lots of screenshots early on, you can get rid of shit later if you want, but you'll wish you had some of your earlier noobie stuff saved at some point, always fun sharing them here too.

Good plan, but things can climb too. You can hit tab twice to get rid of the little useless minimap on the far right, and there are lots of tilesets and graphics sets out there to choose from. If the ascii is still too confusing I'd check out CLA, it has the nice cozy ascii aesthetic with the clever creature tiles.

They can use the ramp to get up top and build the floor, then remove the ramp and put up a wall to seal the hole.

You can also use ramps from the outside to finish the top, or a staircase+additional story(s) if you want.

The demons who "pour out" when you breach hell aren't "ordinary" demons, but a hardcoded wave of invaders.

The ordinary demons are far less aggressive. They're more like stupid cavern animals. Of course, they'll eventually try to leave hell to explore the rest of the map, and of course they'll ferociously attack any other creature that they find, but they aren't set on destroying your fort like the first wave is.

That doesn't sound very different from fort mode. Demons act like and spawn in like normal wildlife groups in fort mode beyond the initial breach wave. A hoary marmot monster acts just like a hoary marmot. Until it sees another creature, at least. But usually they'll just wander in and back out like a wild animal if they don't see anything to kill.

Well let me teach you something.

You don't need the starter pack if you want to use tilesets or dfhack, in fact, you don't need it for anything, and right now it uses an outdated version(43.03), and not the current one (43.05).

I recommend downloading the 43.05 version and then installing the tilesets and utilities you are using right now.

You know you should really inform yourself before you start to play, it even says it's outdated in the OP.

It isn't too hard to copy over the files you need.

Basically a df folder should have:
data (art/init/save/etc are what matters, just grab the whole folder though), libs (Dwarf_Fortress executable, a couple of graphics links/libraries, and possibly a png library), raw (graphics, interaction examples, objects, you NEED the objects folder to play, and graphics are where you put the different critter/unit tiles), and optionally a dfhack-config folder, hack folder, manipulator folder, plus your operating systems df/dfhack scripts, a possible g_libs folder I think, and a dfhack.init file.

With all those in a folder you should be able to open a terminal (or whatever you call it on windows, command prompt? does dfhack come with a terminal emulator there?) and navigate to that folder/start up df or dfhack.

here's the correct sentence, non-english-anon

"Why isn't the kitchen being built?

while "built" alone can be correct, it's not more appropriate in this context than "being built"

take note that "being built" isn't the same as "building," and that "being build" isn't correct

You seem sorta new to DF, so just wanted to give you a tip in case you didn't know in regards to labors. DFHack has a really great labor management utility that gives you a quick and nifty oversight over all the dwarves, their skills and what labors are assigned to them.

It's found under u (Unit list) -> l (Manage labors) if you have DFHack installed. I only found out about it the other day and man, it's made things so much easier. Just wanted to let you know in case you didn't know, y'know?

You're clearly autistic, so you probably don't comprehend the general flow of human conversation on the same intuitive basis a non-autistic person will, and this might be a tough concept for you to understand, but your input is not always needed or desired. Through social intelligence you can often gauge where certain comments, remarks and utterances are appropriate based on the emotional and social response they will garner. You clearly have a lessened affinity for this. Just try to understand it was not the time or place to offer grammatical advice.

Went to shit I guess, I still visit this site because I like shitposting, and sometimes, but only sometimes, you can have a good discussion.

You could try finding a new chan, but if what you want is to have a constant discussion of DF, I haven't found a better place than this, in other chans it's just simply single threads, there can be very interesting discussions in them though. I haven't checked if there's a /dfg/ in infinitychan, maybe there is, not sure if it's better than this one though.

Yeah, I totally get it dude, I'm a tard bro, I've had this from the other side, I speak a surprising amount of spanish, the more I'm around native speakers the faster I pick it back up, and then you get the time I was working on a house with a bunch of mexican dudes and we were all joking and derping around, one of them asked if I had seen their tool belt and I say "esta en la cochina" and he looks at me for a second and just explodes into laughter, I'm laughing from him being so tickled by it but can't really see why it is funny, I said "in the kitchen" right?

Well no, apparently I said something along the lines of "it's in the hoggish/dirty" and to make it funnier, I made it feminine when it's actually a masculine word: cochino, while kitchen is cocina.

you really think that? every time I look around other places I see nothing but vitriol towards correction of grammar, as if it's some kind of personal attack.
no, nothing you post must "be part of 4chan culture," but this is one of the only places on the internet where good things can happen for the sake of goodness, rather than a proposition to suppose one identity is greater than another identity. no commotion should arise from an uncomplicated, non-opinionated correction of grammar that has nothing to do with anything else. no one should be offended. this should not even still be discussed

The fuck has dorf fort done to my brain? I tried a game today called Oxygen Not Included. Basically, 2D space survival sim where you manage your colonists and resources. You start off underground and have to keep digging and looking for resources to survive, cause you're constantly running out, especially oxygen.

Anyway, things started going to shit and I noticed a lot of my colonists were vomiting from the stress and crapping on the floor, cause the shitter's clogged. To the point where the lower levels of my base had turned into a septic tank. And do you know what my first thought was when I saw that? "Hey, I bet if I hooked this up to a filter I could turn it into drinkable water and then turn that into oxygen to breathe and hydrogen to generate power. I could sustain this place on nothing but dirt and vomit".

Such a cheerful and silly little game and here I am planning on how to turn it into an endless cycle of torment, where if my colonists ever experience joy they'll slowly suffocate, mired in their own vomit and feces.

Ah, for fucks sake, it's 1AM, I'm slightly drunk and I just watched 9 people suffocate on their own farts, pardon me from phrasing it in a way that sounds less edgy or 12-yearold-y. What I meant to say that at the time it seemed like a very dwarf-y idea. Mostly cause I recall some anon came up with a similar thing in DF, except everything was powered by goblin and cat blood. I think it was some brainstorming in what you could do in DF if all liquids flowed instead of just water and magma.

If your niche is fighting an uphill battle, while a literal river of liquid shit is pouring down the hill, then yes. It fills the niche. It's kind of like Don't Starve, cause you never really get those comfy moment wher eyou just sit back, look at your colony or for whatever and go "Damn, that's nice". It's pretty much constant panic and searching for resources, because you're always short on SOMETHING. As it is right now, it's not very fun. For starters, you have no reason to ever expand. If you just keep the 3 dipshits you start the game with, it's much easier, because they'll eventually build all the shit you want, except they don't need much oxygen. You can see everything there is to see in 4-5 hours.

This is already in to some extent. Some human civs will generate with metal masks for armor and some won't, and some civs only have low boots, not high. Small town by Swedish (colloquial) definitions would have a population of about 1000-15000 people. Being any larger than that would make it considered as a smaller city.

They're well worth the effort, I set up a 10~ z impulse elevator when I found a solid spire of candy sticking up into the caverns down at the far southeast edge of the embark, so I tried to set it up where they would fill it up and just shove it up the ramp and wait for it to come back, but had never really tried to mix a longer cart route with a tall ramp so I didn't think to disable the ride option for some reason, so I go to check for the cart coming up to the smelters... nothing.

Hmmm, start scrolling back along the route, don't see them, hit the hotkey back to the base of the ramp and they aren't there either so I start tracing back up the route when I notice blood along the walls and a few teeth here and there, then I see it.

Used to be. Not so much right now. Still not middleclass by any definition, but I've got a car, a roof over my head and a guitar and make enough to not worry about how I'll last the month's so I'd say I'm pretty good.

Neither, there's this weird shit, where about 60-70 years ago people with money would get together and build apartment buildings with their own cash. As a result, they're nicer and the people who built them own them, instead of paying rent. In theory, at least. In practice, there isn't a single 90 degree corner in the whole apartment (I checked), the insulation's shit, I can hear the people upstairs fucking and those above them arguing, the pipes are shit, the wiring occasionally catches fire and in the event of a fire or earthquake everyone who doesn't live on the first floor is going to die. But, I don't have to pay rent, so all is good. Before you ask, I went to a university in a different city, shortly after my parents moved to a less shit city and bought a house there, then I came back and ended up living alone. I didn't move out of my parent's house, they just moved their house.

targeting would be a better buff, bow/xbow weapons were never made to fast, throwing/slinging weapons were

throw/similar should remain as is, fast, but without targeting
xbow/bow/darts should be as slow as they are, but should be able to target, and target accurately at that,

it's purely a matter of speed, not skill or anything. setting to max swim speed at a lower level will get you alot faster than a normal swim speed on a higher skill level

I have the perfect setup for defending this fort from goblins. In this world the dwarfs are getting their ass kicked by the goblins and this fort is the last of The Hammer of Vines, the 2nd dwarven civilization. This is called the gsp, or goblin space program. Its a bunch of drawbridges linked to one lever, the only way into the fort. one 20 or 30 goblins are sprinting toward the heart of my fortress the lever is pulled and the drawbridges are closed, sending the goblins flying.

Well, higher swimming skill grants a higher swim speed, so if it's purely a matter of speed then it's also a matter of skill. But that's not really what I'm asking, I worded the question poorly.

I'd like to know how long a creature can remain underwater without drowning to death, whether or not that's influenced by swimming skill or any attributes, whether or not movement or movement speed affects the speed of drowning. I'm designing a thing and this information would be useful for tuning it.
