I made my first magma piston the other day, it's about 160 levels deep. I feel quite accomplished.

Can a recasting magma piston punch multiple levels at once? I think that will mess up the obsidian cast but I'm not 100% sure.

A couple of questions. Why does everyone hate square tilesets/anything not ascii and therapist? Is it just a sense of trying to feel superior?
>>
>>169261934
nobody actually cares. loud minority
>>
>>169261934
personally i'm frustrated by the fact that there just aren't any good square tilesets. like, square tilesets seem like such a good solution but none of them are good - the aesthetics always end up clashing terribly because no one wants to take the time to really make enough cohesive artwork to cover everything in dorf

despite the fact that the default tileset makes things less aesthetic (can't have pixel perfect symmetrical constructs) i still stick with it because most other things make the game look even worse imo, although i do use external software in order to keep track and manage my dwarfs esp. once the fort reaches 50+
>>
>>169261934
It's not as bad as some vocal people make it seems. Most don't care.
>>
>>169261934
>Why does everyone hate square tilesets
Not everyone hates them, but they look squashed and a bit ugly when you're used to rectangular tilesets.
>anything not ascii
Non-ascii sets are pretty much exclusively hideous. The game just looks like too much of a pile of vomit with anything more detailed than text and numerals.

>>
>>169261934
Square/nonsquare tilesets are skub. That's pretty much all there is to it.

"ASCII" (actually pseudo CP437) is standardized, clear and simple. Whatever pixelart pictures someone drew and then made into a tileset aren't standardized, aren't simple, and very often aren't clear.

The rapist is a crutch that some people don't know how to play without, and isn't updated to work with the current version of DF. Also, some people don't like its aesthetics and/or its effect on immersion. I've never used it and don't know all that much about it so I don't know much more about it beyond that.

Also, I would like to thank you, because somehow your post spurred me to finally try making a tileset. I messed up on my first try, but I think I know what to do now and will probably try fixing it tomorrow. It's nothing fancy and I expect someone else has already done the exact same thing, but I haven't seen an example of it floating around.
>>
>>169266487

I like not using the rapist because it ends up with me unintentionally making a caste system. Since I don't want to fiddle with labors manually too often, generally once a dwarf has his labors set they stay that way for life.
>>
>people don't use therapist

Literally how? Once you get a fort of 60+ dwarfs it is waaaaay too tedious to manage them withouth therapist.
>>
>>169266487
When you are finished with the tileset post it.
>>
>>169267284
I'm using the dfhack labor manger while waiting for the therapist to be updated.
>>
>>169267284
I set and forget, if a dwarf doesn't have a high useful skill or moodable skill he gets a metalworking one (typically armorsmith because I like artifact armor) and then goes into the hauler and unmoodable menial labor class until he gets a mood. There's very little "management" to be done; by the time you have enough dwarfs for them to be "unmanageable" you have enough that you don't really need to manage them.
>>
>>169267284
I don't play with 60+ dwarves since that would kill my fps

I still use (well, used) the therapist though
>>
>>169267284
I've never understood this at all, the only answer I can come up with is that some people were simply crippled by dwarf therapist. I have no problem whatsoever dealing with hundreds of dwarves, I can give them nicknames, custom professions, and it's not as if you have to deal with a lot at once, unless in cases of huge migrant waves.

The game has several tools to control not only labor, but also transit. It seems most simply do not care enough to try and learn it, and would rather run into the same problems over and over again (i.e cave crocodile ate the armorer, 80 idlers).
>>
>idlers
I almost never really have these. My forts are usually busy enough that all the peasants are always either building something, hauling something or sleeping. The only "break time" is when I consciously suspend the work for a while to give them all a break.
>>
>>169267284
>Actually managing my dorfs

I literally just wing it the whole time. I've never checked thoughts or preferences, never checked what jobs their best at, and haven't ever used any in-game vanilla management tools, if they even exist.

I just dig holes, make workshops in the holes, and then order stuff to be made in said workshops. It all gets done eventually, so why bother with the details? You can always get more dorfs if one of them goes berserk, and if the fort falls, just make a new one.
>>
>>169270136
*They're best at
>>
>>169266352

>>
>>169270136
The problem with this is that you can end up not being able to do certain things, and your only option is hoping that a migrant with the skill needed to do that comes and it has it on.

What you said sounds like a challenge run, and a tough one at that.
>>
>>169271140
I mean, that's how I play it by default really. I spent years eating raw food until a cook came along.
>>
>>169271190
That's one of the most frustrating ways to play DF I've ever heard, just relying on rng, you must be a masochist.
>>
>>169271405
Well actually yes I am, but that's besides the point. Its just the way I've always played it.
>>
>>169271454
I still don't understand how you can play like that, did you really think that it was the way it was meant to be played? Did you really not check if there was a way of changing jobs? Did you really think the game was just like that?

Honestly I just can't understand, if I was in your position I would just have dismissed the game as rng horseshit.
>>
>>169271719
>did you really think that it was the way it was meant to be played? Did you really not check if there was a way of changing jobs? Did you really think the game was just like that?

Well I did gradually become aware of other options as I kept playing but really I was just too lazy to learn all that and was like "Either the problem will fix itself or everyone will die so its a moot point." And so I am to this day.
>>
>>169271919
Well alright, it still sounds as fun as hammering nails through your balls, but if that's how you want to play.
>>
>>169272160
I guess I'm just fine with not micromanaging. If I see I can't do something, I just shrug and focus on what I can actually do. And inevitably I glance back at the list of units and wouldn't you know it, I have a dude I want now. There you go problem solved. So long as you aren't invaded, getting the dorfs you want is inevitable. Its just a matter of patience.
>>
>>169272249
Sounds more like luck than patience to me, especially if you're playing with a small popcap, since you could hit the cap and still not have dwarves with the skills you want.
>>
>>169272352
Oh no I play with a 100+ pop cap, my computer can handle it.
>>
>>169272412
That's good.

You will still have problems if you play as an extinct civ, so avoid that.
>>
>>169267284
No one forces you to micromanage every single dwarf for optimised production.

Personally, I just add labours to some idle dwarves (with v-p-l, of course) if I feel that the labours aren't being done fast enough. It works just perfectly. Since I don't obsess over optimal performance, it means I can have a more comfy time watching the private lives of my dorfs.

>>
>>169272986
Best to play it safe and take friendly terms. If the RNG hates you, the passing acquaintance might as well develop into a personal grudge. Friendly characters stay friendly forever.
>>

My goal for my current fort is actually to test out if there's a limit to that.

>>169272570

Whyyyyyyy?!? Ok, so how much of a problem do I have here and what can I do about it? I am now in possession of five wagon wood logs and a bunch of other merchant stuff. The depot says that there are no merchants trading right now. They announced that they would be leaving soon, but they hadn't started packing up yet. They've got a bunch of yaks, some are in mortal fear, some aren't, some of them have a couple of items hauled each, some of them have nothing. All of the stuff I sold to the traders is still in the depot, marked [T] in the item view (the view that includes building materials).

And there's no perspective that'd make them "non-squished rectangles", you'd only get squished squares

whether the game gets "finished" or not is irrelevent.

the important ting is that we keep getting more and more interesting features. in fact, it would be a great tragedy if Toady declared the game "finished", since that would bring an end to the addition of new features.

of course, you're just baiting, but my point withstands.

Euclidean space is the space were euclidean geometry holds true. Things like:
"The sum of all three angles on a triangle is 180 degrees", so, basically, anything you learnt in school about geometry was euclidean. Probably not the real definition but you get the idea

Non-euclidean geometry, like that on a sphere instead of on a flat plane, would fuck that up. Triangles adding up to 200 degrees, or shit like that. That's where Cthulhu lives. Banach space must be a generalization grouping euclidean and a number of non-euclidean spaces, maybe some of then are BANAna SHaped

Oh, try this since you can fly:
http://pastebin.com/9BJ80ijX

It'll make you into a ghost, you can still carry shit around and build, and it'll stop people from freaking out if you're a werebeast, which, I mean, a fucking ghostly butterfly man turning into a goddamn ghostly werebeast sounds pretty damn unsettling, but nobody will care.

You can also carry infinite weight as a ghost and don't eat/sleep/etc.

Also how do I spawn a slab? Can't find it in any of the item.txts so don't know what to point createitem at.
>>
>>169326067
Ghostly is pretty easy, and no, removing necro status isn't really something I'd recommend trying, though I could probably do it by fucking around with gm-editor enough.

Just use gui/hack-wish from your unit screen, but createitem SLAB FEATHER:WOOD should make one light enough to carry and possible to destroy later.

Early spring of 132

I fix the sewer system, start with housing, finish the library, finish two temples, make two towers and finish the tavern roof, next is starting with all the other temples

This is the most satisfactory playthrough that I had but invasions have been a joke, the first one was literal just a goblin with her elf slave and the other two were just one squadron each, so I've been thinking about starting a war but the problem is the caravan from the mountainhome doesn't come every year so I have to rely in the human caravan,
I know the logic thing to do is to kill the elfs but I want metals and I don't want to lose the option for animals, what to do?

>have several craftsdwarves making glass pots for the wine
>thinking of expanding the industry into encrusting the pots
>want to get to the point where I'm producing so much blueberry wine in decorated glass pots that I can imagine that my wine is famous throughout the world
>dwarves lives are leisurely enough, save for the field work, wine industry and small militia

>For context, my town (A single isolated city that contains all demon-kind) is constantly plagued by werecreatures and night-trolls.

I'm currently in the process of carving out a subterranean city.

This one is more organic and less planned than my previous attempt (http://mkv25.net/dfma/map-12725-churchguilds). I also aim to have more depth, at the expense of the area.

HOLY FUCK.

I was listening through some of the old Toady interviews I downloaded yesterday, and in one of them, I heard him mention some old game he made named "Loser Ball". That game isn't on any of the "secret" pages on bay12, so of course, I was surprised.

It even has unique artwork and music.

Here's a link to it:

>>169376397
It's fun so far. It's basically Go on a huge board, with up to four players. Out of these four players, you can chose exactly which (if any) will be controlled by the player, and which will be controlled by the computer.

In the interview, Toady said that he was surprised when he got contacted by a group of soldiers stationed in Iraq, who said that they played the shit out of it.

In any case, it's a worth a try. The characters are pretty fun, too. All of them have portraits and some degree of voice acting (so far, I've only heard their voices when I selected them, but they might say something when they win, too.)

That way the views of the city become easier to admire from within, as the view won't be blocked by the highest buidings. Of course, this meant that the highest of the buildings, including the entrance tower, had to be placed in the corner.

I also want the city to look organic, so too much symmetry would ruin it.

You still could make it work if you did it from the center, you put the small buildings in the center and the highest ones to the sides.

If you want to have a more natural shape you can try to create your grant floor uneven, make a part of the town a couple of z-level deeper than the rest. You can also try to made a dwaft-made cave to the side and put a park in there with a lake and shit.

I'm actually think of doing this.

My main source of inspiration was vaporwave cities like pic related, and those almost always have a lot of level differences on the ground floor. I'll probably let the main avenue be the lowest one, and then I let the smaller back alleys get higher and higher in relation to said avenue.

Jesus man, one of my favorite sets of early artifacts was a platinum war hammer named Mengnosing(Lashbrushed), and a steel battle axe named Razotkir(Raptormerge), and I later stole both to use in my adventurers along with a set of steel artifact armor, site had no candy but several clusters of platinum so I was cool with it.

Who was it a couple threads back with an npc they killed and then bumped into again?

Basically if they were important enough to track, if they took part in a festival, wrote a book, killed someone, ruled a site, were kidnapped, held a position, etc. Then the non-histfigs are fillers so marketplaces have merchants, houses that are empty are empty for a reason, to add a general hustle and bustle.

gui/gm-editor is more broadly useful, especially with the adventurer friendly tweaks I put in, though the army teleport is less handy with questport, but it's still nice for stuff like river hopping or pinpoint location edits.

Advfort is awesome for shit like building windows and digging/smoothing walls for your comfy campsite though.

Pretty much any wild cavern creature you manage to catch a breeding pair of will make good livestock. Cave crocs and elk birds stand out as MVPs. Crundles, bugbats and hungry heads are notable exceptions, they're junk animals that will clog up your cage traps. They're good for skilling up your animal trainers, though.

I will never understand the argument that ascii is "unambiguous." I always use either the meph or obsidian tilesets and I have no difficulty telling what things are. If anything it's more ambiguous in ascii. In ascii if I see an "O" walking around I think "I guess the name of that animal starts with an O better click on it to see what it is (if I've never seen it before or don't remember what that color is etc.). In a tileset I see a picture of an ostrich and immediately know what it is whether I've seen it before or not. As for therapist it does make manually assigning labors a lot easier but that's rarely a necessity autolabor gets the job done unless you have a very specific plan in mind. Speaking of which I really wish there were better job priority. Like marking wall construction as a "do now" task and shit like that

Nah, the only unambiguous graphics set is CLA: a capital G with the impression of a certain type of face and body in dark grey is obviously a Gorilla, a capital H with seven heads is obviously a Hydra, a little c with pointy ears is a cat, that shit just comes across effortlessly in ways which you can't emulate with any of the smaller tile size graphics. Spacefox makes use of the big head/little body aesthetic to get across a lot of information, but it still requires a large amount of interpretation and familiarity. Some of the phoebus tiles were completely baffling to me, as were obsidian, while gemset made use of the larger tilesizes and a specific effort to use clear contrasts and bright colors so the tiles present the right information, but it still struggles to compare to the simple and clean aesthetic of the CLA creature letters.

The combination of [character] and [colour] is unique in almost every case.

It's not ambiguous once you learn it. The difference is that you only have to learn it once. With pixel art sets, you have to relearn everything every time you change sets, since all artists have their own arbitrary way of drawing every single animal.

I like my comfyset, because it only has graphics for the five main races. To me, this is the perfect compromise between ascii and pixel art.

Apparently everyone you talk to in adventure mode becomes a historical figure if they weren't already. The descendants of historical figures are also always historical figures. All (I think) dwarves who set foot in your fortress in fortress mode become historical figures, but strangely, invaders don't. All position holders in all civs and sites are historical figures, and if there aren't any available the game makes some out of the abstract populations. Any creature who kills a historical figures becomes one. That's all the methods I know of, but there might be more.

That's pretty much what I meant. I use the default CP437 tileset. When I look at screenshots taken in an ascii-based tileset I can tell what I'm looking at about as well as when I'm playing. When I look at a screenshot with more pixelartish tilesets I often have to put effort into figuring out what I'm looking at and often still can't, at least without putting more effort into it than I'm willing to. CP437 is the same in everyone's screenshots, whereas the various pixelartish sets are all different to one degree or another.

>>
>>169451046
Shortswords are a good, boring choice for a military.
>>
>>169451046
I usually make battle axes, swords, and warhammers mixed nowadays. When I was more cautious I used to make one squad of edged (sword and battleaxe) for general killing, and then blunt squad to fight any FBs that had poison blood. And then a marksdwarf squad for any FB with deadly fumes, webbers, etc.
>>
>>169451046
Axes and/or hammers, pikes for tough fuckers if you don't have steel or adamantine.
>>
>>169451046
Almost every weapon has a niche where it's the best at what it does, and almost every weapon will kill almost everything in the right hands. That said, I find spears to be the most versatile. They're very effective at killing things inside every other weapon's niche, and they excel in an area that no other (native vanilla) weapons do, namely killing really big things.

>>
>>169456838
>Adventure mode is really kinda short on motivations to do things once you get down to it. Hopefully the next update will fix that.

Actually I'm going to continue this line of thought because of just how much the next update will change adventure mode. Here are some hypothetical questions and answers regarding why the adventure mode character does things.

1. Why does he wander the world
Current version:
>Because everyone stays where they are and thus the only way to continually find adventure is to actively look for it.
>Because I enjoy travelling

Next version:
>Because I have an artifact everyone is looking for and I have to stay one step ahead of them or they will kill me to death
>Because I am looking for an artifact and want to steal/discover it.

2. Why stay in one place?
Current version:
>There really isn't a reason to permanently stay in one area as of now as you will eventually exhaust all given content in a current area via killing everything that needs killing or finishing whatever site you were building, and even then it won't be attacked.

Next version:
>I need to stay to guard the artifacts in my site.
>I need to stay and guard the artifacts in my lord's site.
>Adventurers and monsters will come to me looking for stuff to take so there is a constant stream of content even when stationary.

3. Why build a site?
Current version:
>Because I have nothing else to do.
>Because I like building.

Next version:
>Because people are going to come to steal all my stuff and I need a place to put it.
>Because I need a place to house all the armed guards that look after my stuff.
>Because I need a place to hide in after I steal someone else's stuff.

Like for real, the next update is a fucking game changer in terms of adding a motivation to do certain things.
>>
>>169457584
I'd just like to point out that we don't really know how common agents or artifact disputes will be. Presumably they won't be rare per se, but I doubt you'll be able to describe them as a "constant stream of content".
>>
>>169458072
Oh, I worded that wrong.
I don't mean to imply something like "things will always be happening" but more like "If you wait long enough, statistically something will probably happen", as opposed to the current "After you clear out the local bandits/monsters nothing will happen ever." Maybe it won't be frequent, but there will always be that looming sense that conflict could happen at any given time, even if, for example, you don't leave your lord's castle for months at a time. This is currently lacking in the present version.

>>
>>169458450
Well, he's what we know from the dev blog
>People will be able to recognize you have an artifact if they see you holding it.
>They will be able to tell other NPCs
>Other NPCs will able to ask these NPCs when and where they last saw the artifact, and head in that direction.
>NPCs looking for the artifact may be willing to kill in order to gain it.

It seems perfectly feasible from what I can tell.
>>
>>169458580
There is and there always has been.
>>
>>169458450
>>169458585
Unfortunately there's a difference between "NPC knows you have an artifact and is coming to kill you and take it" and literally having an enemy show up at your door trying to kill you, and there's a further difference between that and an actual meaningful encounter (as opposed to just an "ambush" that happens on your site by another faceless mook).

As we've seen for years, just because things are supposedly "happening" in the game doesn't mean they'll be able to interact with the player in a meaningful way.
>>
>>169458585
That's really fucking cool. And imagine you could head to a new town with your artifact and assume a new identity and then some visitor comes and recognizes you and then suddenly everyone draws their weapons and surrounds you. I just hope it's programmed well enough so that the dialogue successfully telegraphs what's happening to you.

While the encounter itself may not vary from traditional ambushes, as far as I can tell you will still be tracked from place to place if you have a thing the party or civ wants, which is the main additional feature. Even if it still lacks some character the basic features I described in my previous post remain true, as far as I know.

The dwarfs of Inkscribed arrived in the flat beachside tundra in the early spring, and they quickly set up a pen for their geese to roost and begin production of food. A small lodging was dug out of the earth for the dwarfs to seek shelter from the snow that fell constantly upon the fortress.

And then they stayed in that hole forever because the overseer noticed the framerate was already a third of what it should be and he forgot to backup the world before saving.

I don't think amphibiousness or aquaticity are defined based on breathing. After all aren't otters, manatees, narwhals, whales, dolphins, porpoises, etc. said to be aquatic mammals? Sea turtles are certainly either amphibious or aquatic, I should think.

>After all aren't otters, manatees, narwhals, whales, dolphins, porpoises, etc. said to be aquatic mammals
aquatic may have been the wrong word to throw in there, since being aquatic and a mammal/reptile isn't mutually exclusive. almost all the animals you mentioned are aquatic (as in they live in the water almost exclusively) except for otters and sea turtles, which are amphibious (as in they only mostly live in or around water) mammals and reptiles respectively.

Sackbattles. A name name too gloriously for the cell of hedonism that is my current fort. It's in it's eighth year, and the Mountainhome of my Civilization (yay) but aside from the occasional soft-skinned forgotten beast, nothing really happens.
All my dwarves do is eat and drink, steadily supplied by my three legendary cooks that regularly pump out monstrosities like pic related. I have about 5000 prepared meals stockpiled for my fort's population of 214 + 98 Citizens and Visitors, with a fluctuating level of booze around 1000. Booze used to be the biggest shortage, but an overhaul of my booze industry has allowed the river spirits to flow like, uh, rivers. Now, evermore does the floor of grand hall the Syrup of Flashing flood with vomit, blood and teeth from barfights
Now the shortage has moved on towards Coal-- I went on a huge steel armour and noble-bedroom-furnishings binge, exhausting all o the trees. The recent discovery of magma, however, should revitalize the metal industry, provided I can access it. This discovery has given an otherwise sleepy Sackbattles a new drive-- to exploit this Armok-given resource to its fullest potential. Small scale tests, mostly of water pumping, have been set up to test machines, which I've largely ignored until now: my eventual goal will be a pump-stack. Other going ons include my military, who despite really having not purpose, number half my population. About 40% Markdwarves and 60% Melee. Recently, all of my Fortress Guard, all human mercenaries, aside from my Duke who commands it, have reached legendary statues in their fighting and weapon abilities. Eight years of existence has allowed scholars to into their work, pondering the mechanics of the wheel and axle, trade maps, and a human village named Boygroups, by the way of an expose titled "Boygrounps Uncovered", authored by Sackbattle's very own Duke.

Really, monotony is killing this fort, but hopefully a magma mishap will end it gloriously

Infra Arcana and brogue are pretty good, DDA is good if you want some survival post-apocalyptic gameplay with zombies and monsters and shit, it has some shit features though, like dirty clothes, I'd recommend disabling them. URW is good if you want survival gameplay in iron age finland, if I remember correctly it's been on development longer than DF. If you want something more grindy, well, you have *bands, the hot one right one is PCB. I find *bands boring but you should give them a try anyway. There's also Elona, it has a kind of anime style and it's different from most roguelikes. Technocally it's only a roguelile if you play on Inferno mode, which is the only difficulty with permadeath, but I can't imagine playing it like that, you could lose literally hundreds of hours of progress to a dumb mistake or something you couldn't have known, I'd just select one of the other difficulties and play it as a jrpg.

For more info go ask /rlg/, if you want more info on Elona you should go to the general on /jp/ instead though.

I've just started a new fort and I can't choose the details anymore when building things, is this a bug?

are you sure that you can't choose it?

maybe the text just turned glitchy due to truetype fuckery.

I've added some level differences on the ground of my subterranean city.

The highest level is the periphery of the city. This is also where I place the memorials for all dead dorfs. It's also a good spot for overlooking the other streets.

Do you seriously think Toady cares about that

One level down, we have the alleys leading down from the periphery.

It's not that bad, considering his age. Be easy on the Toad.

And on the lowest level, we have the main "avenue" as well as the street that runs parallell to it, and of course the alleys which connect them.

I'm sure that its a really nice fort but I just can't stand that tileset. Especially the way the dwarves look. Maybe it's the colour scheme too, I don't know.

>tfw hairline is receeding on the sides, even though you're only 22
haha, at least I'll look mature, r-right? combined with my short height, it will show my surroundings that I'm to smart too be attractive.
>>
>>169488004
Yes I'm sure, btw I fixed by installing a new tileset.

>Can any American in the thread explain this behaviour?
It's not an American thing. It's a young male thing. Humans are tribal by nature, and those perceived as being part of the outgroup are valid targets for harassment by young men with an excess of testosterone and free time. When done in a group, this type of behavior strengthens social bonds and reinforces tribal identity. In western societies it rarely escalates to physical violence unless police are involved.
