Oh good I was worried I might run out of goblin teeth.

The two dwarves holding the line there are the Duchess/Militia Commander Fath Spiraloil Rider of Rampages, Captain of the Contested Castles, and Mosus Shieldbloods the Afflicted Confidence of Pack, Fath's longtime protege. Both are macelords wielding artifacts, Fath wielding the platinum mace Rumadiltang created by our first and long-reigning mayor, and Mosus wielding Nakuther, an adamantine morningstar created by our original expedition leader. The makers of both artifacts were transformed into werechameleons and died in battle against a terrible forgotten beast after sequestering themselves in the 3rd cavern. Mosus' little sister is also a titled macelord under Fath's tutelage, and her mother is a spearmaster and Captain of the Diamond Gorges. Both are on their way to reinforce right now.

All in all, this is a very satisfying sight for me.

Anons and Urists, Goblins and Elves, Kobolds and Plump Helmet men... Welcome, WELCOME, to the SECOND DWARF FORTRESS GENERAL GLADIATOR TOURNAMENT. For your pleasure, sixteen stalwart souls shall step onto the gore-slicked stones of our very own arena. Blood shall be spilled, bones shall be broken, and Armok shall be honoured. Out of all the combatants, only one may survive to earn the right to call themselves the Champion of /dfg/. Eternal glory, wealth and a place in the hall of fame are what await this victorious gladiator.

But enough talk! Now is the time for blades to sing, for hammers to break and for the crowd to ROAR.

May Armok have mercy on their souls.

For our first match of the day, we have brains vs brawn.

Buckethead Båx, a goblin equipped with a spear and a large, bucket-shaped helm. When queried as to why he'd chosen such an uncomfortable looking piece of equipment, he merely doffed his helm and explained haughtily, "In this moment, I am euphoric. Not because of any crass muscles. But because, I am enlightened by my intelligence."

Dovregubben, even for a troll, is remarkably slow. What he lacks in brains, however, he more than makes up for in sheer muscle and savagery, often devouring his still-living enemies. At over four times the size of his opponent, one quivers to imagine these two fighting. And yet fight they must!

Place your bets folks, for the games. Have. BEGUN!

Dovregubben initiates the brawl with a punch that strikes surprisingly fast for such a large creature, but as Båx had brilliantly predicted, his cranium is protected by his trusty iron helm. Nonetheless, the blow sends him reeling, the strength behind that troll's fists must be incredible indeed! I expect Båx to have a sore neck in the morning, should he survive this encounter! Still dizzy, the goblin lashes out, and lands a direct blow on the troll's leg. An audible *CRACK* is heard, and many in the crowd cheer as Dovregubben falls to the earth, unable to stand! While his foe is writhing, Båx lands several quick kicks to the prone troll, before jabbing him in the head with his spear. Trolls have thick skulls, however, and Dovregubben merely blinks the blood out of his eyes and reaches for his foe, snarling. Båx deftly stabs the outstretched hand with a cackle, and hops about taunting his foe. Over the course of several minutes, the euphoric goblin scurries around, landing many blows with his spear, which seems so blunt it tends to break bones rather than pierce flesh. Dovregubben, in return, only manages to land glancing blows, which are easily ignored by the goblin. Eventually, Båx stabs at the mouth of the troll, and actually breaks off a tusk. Enraged at the loss of a troll's pride and joy, a roaring Dovregubben makes a final climactic attempt at killing his tormentor, but is put down by a shattering blow to his shoulder. Bones broken, bleeding from a dozen places, and exhausted, the troll succumbs and falls unconcious. Bax grasps his spear and savagely stabs at the troll's head, working on it for almost a full minute until, finally, the skull breaks and Dovregubben is put out of his misery.

Congratulations Buckethead Bax! You are the first gladiator to make it through to the quarter finals! You have 220 points to spend for your next round.

What a fight that was my fellow anons! It appears, at least this time, that brains trumps brawn and sends it packing with a large hole in the skull. We shall see if Båx manages to keep proving his intellect is unmatched against his next opponent.

For our next fight, we have a blushing beauty against a brawny scrapper, but which one shall be the victor?

It's the fighter from down under, the brawler from the bush, the vulgar yet intriguing Restive Win! It is rumoured the name is but a cover, and that this particular kangaroo man is a living legend, come to duke it out against the best we have to offer. Hopefully, we don't disappoint!

A traveler from afar, Annie Mae is fighting in this tournament to save her kidnapped brother. She claims to have been the best swordswoman in her fencing school, and incredibly popular with the boys. Why she included that last part, we aren't sure, but her figure definitely proves it.

Place your bets folks, the second round shall begin shortly

Both combatants step into the arena, at ease and confident. The Horn is blown, and immediately they charge at each other. Annie Mae gets the first strike, a stabbing blow to the stomach which tears through her opponents stingray cloak, and to the crowds delight, causes a crimson spatter of blood to stain the arena floor. Caught off guard by the savageness of such a petite elf (and maybe distracted by her dazzling assets) the kangaroo man misses his jab. Snatching the opportunity, Annie Mae twirls her elven blade and scores a direct hit on Win's head, causing a wash of warm blood to streak down his face! The wrestler is in bad shape already, but shrugging off the pain he curses in a strange accent and charges at Mae. His rock hard body slams into the elf, to whoops from the audience, and he gets a vice-like lock on her leg. Mae, no longer looking as smug, slashes desperately with her sword, and actually severs Win's foot! This does not deter the brawny fighter, and with a loud bellow, he twists the leg in a move that audibly snaps the tendons and pops it out of it's socket. The elf screams in pain, a terrible noise to hear, and starts savagely hacking at her opponent. Win blocks her sword with an arm wrapped in stingray cloak, but before he can do anything else she slices off his other foot! This is too much for Win, and he heaves and retches. Seeing him off guard, Annie Mae punches him, and rolls away from his unbalanced swings. Coming up in a blinding movement, she lunges forward. There is a moment of silence, where neither combatant moves, before Annie Mae collapses to the ground, unable to stand on her damaged leg, and Restive Win slowly topples forward, his head falling cleanly off his shoulders. Covered in blood, vomit and tears, Annie Mae weakly raises her sword, and the crowd screams it's approval.

Congratulations Annie Mae! You have made it to the quarter finals. You have 254 points to spend for next round.

Annie Mae victory theme: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rYcCcbh9_yg

It looks like the power of Annie Mae is too much, even for a legend such as Restive Win, may he rest in peace. Will the elf swordswoman manage to survive more of these frantic, bloody duels and go on to rescue her kidnapped brother? We shall see...

For our next fight, we have a very curious situation indeed. Two animal men, both winged, and both deadly with their respective weapons. Axe and shield, and... Lead minecart?

The roach man Koksal is a noble representative of his people. He is said to be their greatest champion, and a brave warrior. Perhaps he is here to struggle against the unfair prejudices many have against roaches, or perhaps he is here merely to test his mettle.

I WAS RECENTLY LASHED IN HALF is a kea man, with perhaps the strangest (and alarming) name out of all the gladiators. Even more bizarre, he fights with a stolen lead minecart. Armed only with his ludicrously heavy cart, and the quirky, mischievous attitude that all kea's possess, we shall be monitoring with interest what this strange fighter can do.

Place your bets, folks. Such a fight is sure to intriguing, no matter the outcome.

Koksal strides towards his ridiculous looking opponent, a minecart-toting kea man with the most nonthreatening name imaginable. I WAS RECENTLY LASHED IN HALF, on his end, slowly heaves his lead weapon towards the roach man, his green arms straining under the load. With surprising dexterity, the minecart is swung straight at Koksal's face, only to be batted aside by his axe. The two trade blows, Koksal evidently impressed with his opponent. I WAS RECENTLY LASHED IN HALF gets in a powerful blow, crushing one of the roach man's arms, while Koksal himself hacks at a wing, scoring a deep, painful wound. The two combatants pause and reassess each other, Koksal settling himself into a fighter's stance. Perhaps he's taking the kea man more seriously now. A flurry of blows follow at a speed that draws gasps from the audience, however it is the minecart which lands first, crushing Koksal's axe hand into a bloody smear. Unfazed, even as the axe falls to the ground, Koksal strikes using the wagon wheels he wields as shields. The two fight on, but it's clear that the fight is going poorly for the roach man. Chattering angrily, Koksal takes to the skies, baiting the kea man to follow on his wounded wing. The two duel in the air, shields and minecart a blur of movement, with both combatants trading blows. As Koksal weakens due to the rain of heavy blows, I WAS RECENTLY LASHED IN HALF spies an opportunity, and in an incredible display of strength, raises the lead minecart over his own head! Koksal turns to flee, but is struck directly in the back, completely shearing off one of his wings. Unable to remain in the air, the roach man violently crashes to the earth and bursts! I WAS RECENTLY LASHED IN HALF flies back to the ground, exhausted, and stands amidst the innards and ichor to exuberant cheers from the crowd.

Congratulations I WAS RECENTLY LASHED IN HALF, you have made it to the quarterfinals! You have 293 points to spend on the next round.

And so the noble roach man perishes, crushed beneath the great weight of a minecart. His people shall no doubt mourn his death for years to come. None of that matters to the cheerful kea man however, who is chirping happily along without a care in the world! We'll just have to keep an eye on any valuables while he's here...

Due to an error in management, these next fighters were supposed to go before Koksal and LASHED IN HALF, but they're finally getting their time in the spotlight. Two humans, one merely a boy! Is it right to pit this one in the arena, to fight and die for our amusement? Who cares, Armok demands blood!

Ecstasy, also known as Darks, claims to be someone's "OC". We're not sure what he means by this, but from the way he handles his knives down to the spiky blue hair he wears, not to mention his tight fitting raven black leather pants, we get the feeling that he knows what he's doing.

Not much is known about Li. It is assumed he comes from a faraway land, for his garb and tongue are strange. What's more familiar is the sturdy iron armour he wears, and the confident way he handles his long, and very sharp, halberd.

Place your bets folks, its man vs man! Or rather, boy vs man. Let's see who will be quick, and who will be dead.

http://dwarffortresswiki.org/index.php/DF2014:Adventurer_mode#Faction_management

"After you create a mead hall zone you can claim it like you can claim any mead hall, you will get a text popup telling you you are in control now and your title will change to lord, you may then start hiring guards and assigning them to your sites zones. The guards will automatically patrol your site if they are not your companions, or will hang out in the zones you assign them.

Note If they are not your companions they will not build for you.

As with owning a town, you can force the leaders of nearby villages to pay you tribute via the submit and pay tribute demand if you create a site and claim its mead hall. However they are unlikely to submit under non-strenuous circumstances. "

The combat begins, and immediately Ecstasy sprints towards Li, bent almost double and with his arms trailing behind him. Li, mildly embarrassed by the actions of his opponent, brings up his halberd and knocks aside the obvious attack. The two trade blows, Li calmly standing his ground parrying and jabbing while Ecstasy flips around stabbing at his foe with his daggers. However, despite Li's skill with a halberd, Ecstasy spots an opening and slashes the surprised warrior in the foot, causing him to sink to one knee with an expression of shock. With Li on the defensive, the crowd begin to cheer as Ecstasy slowly racks up damage on his enemy. Desperate to strike at his foe, Li lunges forward and tries to skewer the edgy bastard. He does so too slowly, and with a flash of the knife and a spray of crimson blood, Li's halberd drops from his nerveless hands. Many audience members groan, and urge Li to stand back up and pick up his weapon. Li flails at Ecstasy with his good hand in desperation, unable to land even a single blow, as the boy builds up to a bloody finale. The halberdless hallebardier is subjected to a tortuous death of a thousand cuts, bleeding from all over and with many broken bones, he is soon completely unable to stand, much less fight back with any hope. Eventually, Ecstasy stands before his foe, gloating and licking the blood on his knife, with such unbridled edginess some elderly members of the audience need to be escorted out so that they don't suffer heart attacks. Casually bending over, Ecstasy raises Li's head, so that they are eye to eye. He whispers something to the torn and broken man, before punching him square in the face savagely, and reverse his knife to stab it directly into Li's brain. Jerking out the knife, Ecstasy sneers at the corpse, before cutting his own wrists and nonchalantly departing the arena.

Congratulations Ecstasy aka Darks, you have made it to the quarter finals! You have 210 points to spend for the next round.

It seems that the raw speed and dexterity of Ecstasy, combined with the impressive appearance and powerful aura of Extreme Edge, was too much for poor Li to defeat. In any case, it looks as though with every kill, Ecstasy falls even further into the darkness...

Next up is a battle of strength! The powerful polar bear man with the jaws of steel, versus the serving wench of local dwarven tavern, the Leaky Spigot. So far it seems that they key to victory in these fights is simple. Bring a weapon. However, perhaps Whitey's teeth and claws are the only weapons he needs?

Hailing from the far north, Whitey the Pooh is a bit of an odd one. He wandered into the tournament, signed up after asking a lot of strange questions (such as "do we get snacks for competing?"), and got stuck in the bathroom only a few minutes before his scheduled fight... Maybe he'll prove to be more alert on the battlefield.

Brunhilda is a brawny lass, big, busty and bearded, she's a popular one with the locals, and it seems as if she's already accrued a following, despite not having fought at all yet! With a bare chest and her trusty axe, she seems confident in her abilities. "Hopefully I'll get to have a round with that elf girl." She was heard commenting "I'd kill to show that princess how a real braw lassie fights!"

Place your bets, folks. Let's see if at least one of the wrestlers can make it through!

As the bearded Brunhilda steps into the arena, whoops and raucous cheers are heard from the crowd, it looks as though the entire patronage of the Leaky Spigot is gathered here today! Brunhilda smiles and crashes her axe against her shield, before settling into a warrior's stance, baring a mouthful of teeth at her large opponent. Whitey, meanwhile, looks mildly bewildered by the whole affair, he keeps muttering under his breath and looking around. The signal is blasted, and the two combatants rush forward. The warriors strike at each other, neither getting past the other's defence, until Brunhilda scores first blood with a glancing blow to Whitey's hand, that barely cuts through to the fat. These polar bears have thick skin, that's for sure folks! Yet as I say that, the brazen lass bellows a dwarven oath and cleaves the polar bear man's arm right off! Her fans in the audience roar with delight, and begin singing a dwarven battle hymn. Whitey, infuriated, roars himself, and slams into Brunhilda as she is busy flexing for the crowd. Before he can chomp down on her exposed flesh, however, she lifts her shield, and all Whitey gets is a mouthful of copper. As he growls and spits, the busty dwarf hews into his leg, smashing the bone and bloodying her axe once more! With Whitey howling and writhing on the floor, Brunhilda leaps backwards, and prepares a devastating strike. The injured bear, seeing the flashing blade descend, whispers quite audibly: "Oh, bother..."

*Thunk*

Congratulations Brunhilda, you have made it to the quarter finals! You have 222 points to spend.

Once more, the poor unarmed animal men are defeated by a weapon wielding warrior. Maybe this will encourage them to catch up and finally pick up some instruments of war. Brunhilda, as is her fashion, loudly celebrates her victory by partying it up with her tavern friends, and by soundly defeating the loud-mouthed anole man in an arm-wrestling match. Perhaps her celebrations are premature, though. Only Armok knows.

For our next combat, we have a wandering hero, and a dark creature born into savage world. Which will prevail in this, perhaps, symbolic struggle?

The Succ is a lone vigilante, who is reported to have fought bandits and beasts in the name of good, and to protect the weak and innocent with the powers of his Ultimate Succ. What this means, we're excited to find out.

How Hrum managed to find herself in the arena when she can't even talk, much less sign the register, is a mystery. However, there is no denying this frightening goblin's talents in the art of battle. Raised by trolls, it is said she shares their savagery, and some of their... more cannibalistic tendencies.

Coming right up, it's the battle between noble civilisation and the dark savagery of the wild lands, who will survive to represent their respective ideals. Place your bets, folks!

The signal is heard, and the gladiators furiously rush at each other. The Succ hops about, looking for an opening in order to bite down on his foe, but Hrum puts an end to that with a savage blow to one of his feet as he leaps past her. The tick man collapses on the stone floor, and struggles to stand, only to have his arm smeared into the arena by the mace-wielding goblin. It is an uneven fight, and it does not take long for Hrum to leave smears of ichor all over the arena floor, as The Succ rolls about, desperate to stay away from her silvery bringer of death. At last, after many in the audience had given up hope for the dusty wanderer, he spies an opening and leaps! It is in vain however, as his mandibles cannot bite through Hrum's leather armour. Nonetheless, the plucky hero fights to the bitter end, sustaining more and more horrifying injuries, until Hrum contemptuously finishes him off, not with her gore-encrusted mace, but with a powerful blow to the head, causing the unfortunate tick man to collapse and shudder, until he moves no more. His hat, now tattered and squashed, floats to the arena floor, and sadly lands in the blood of the noble vigilante. To everyone's horror, Hrum promptly tears open the body with her claws and teeth, and starts gorging herself on the guts of The Succ. Security is called, and the blood-soaked goblin is escorted out by the two glowering minotaur guards, to weak cheers and boos from the crowd.

Congratulations Hrum, you have made it to the quarterfinals! You have 220 points to spend for the next round.

A sad end indeed for the tick that had vowed to do good, but such is lie in the arena. There is no good or evil, there is no high ideal. There is only death and glory. And for Hrum, it is glory she recieves! That and perhaps some cat guts, if she's good and doesn't scratch the furniture while she stays in the guest rooms.

Onto the next battle! It is one that has been eagerly awaited by many, a duel between the scruffy old mercenary known and admired by many, and the strange mosquito man (woman) who only refers to herself as 'Bane' and constantly makes strange portents and menacing statements.

Edim Stronghammer is also a regular at the Leaky Spigot, spending all his days there drinking his old age away. Despite this, (and despite the fact he's shown up completely naked) his old expertise with the warhammer should make him a fearsome foe indeed.

Bane, the masked mosquito, has an unusual choice of weapons. The scourge is seen by many to be a cruel and dangerous object, and she fights with not one, but two of these fell weapons. Added to her own natural weapons, perhaps she will be a fitting rival to the old dwarf.

Place your bets, folks, for this fight is bound to be interesting.

The gladiators step into the arena, and Edim grins, waving at his friends in the audience, and sends a jovial wink in Brunhilda's direction. Bane stands motionless, faintly buzzing. The fight begins, and right off the bat, Bane scores a dreadful blow on the Stronghammer's right arm, twisting it unnaturally and scoring deep cuts in the flesh. Edim, not to be bested by this mysterious mosquito man (woman), strikes twice, the hammer landing with deadly strength. It glances one of Bane's spindly hands, but lands square on her wing, fracturing the fragile tissue. Bane buzzes angrily and darts away, only to flit behind him and lash him directly in the back. Such a blow, with the full force of a Big Guy, shatters several bones and leaves Edim gasping on the floor. As he struggles to stand, Bane lashes him several more times, each attack leaving terrible wounds in the grizzled dwarf, until finally, unable to wait any longer Bane attacks with the sickening ability native to her race. Viciously stabbing her proboscis into the prone form of Edim, she eagerly sucks out a great spurt of blood and ingests it. Many of the dwarves in the audience are yelling profanities, and Brunhilda is forcefully restrained by security! Edim, roused by the cries, tears the proboscis out of himself, causing a spray of blood to shoot out, and struggles to fight back. It is futile however, as the mosquito woman leaps away, before diving for his neck. Once more, she sucks up a great deal of blood, until Edim pushes her away feebly. Evidently sated for now, the gorged form of Bane resumes lashing until Edim mercifully blacks out. With a final blow, the skull is cracked and dwarf brains are spilled all over the floor. Bane buzzes, satisfied, before kneeling next to the dead dwarf and exclaiming in a dreadfully calm voice: "You now have my permission to die."

Congratulations Bane, you have made it to the quarter finals! You have a whopping 328 points to spend for the next round.

Bane's victory theme: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e4G8IlNYgws

The old dwarf has been laid to rest, but Brunhilda is not satisfied with this. She demands revenge for the desecration of her friend at the hands of Bane, and now has a more serious reason to defeat her next opponent. Bane, on her part, has quietly buzzed back to her chambers, and seems to be scheming about some great plan. Whatever it is, I feel nervous just thinking about it...

Well friends, we have come to the final match of round one. There have been upsets and surprises, oaths made and deaths aplenty. With this final bout, we shall have all of our quarter finalists. So without further ado, here are our gladiators.

Mogwai, the whip wielding psychopathic gremlin, appeared in the arena, signed up, and spent the entire day waiting for his bout by locking himself in a closet with his whip. From this closet came strange noises, and even stranger smells. We haven't had the cleaners go in there yet. We think we might just dump it outside and burn it, to be honest.

Efeye is a dangerous assassin, who has traveled from the far-flung deserts of the south. She (or he, we're not entirely sure) has come to fight, but for what purpose? Perhaps she has a contract on one of the gladiators? Perhaps it's a training exercise mandated by her, or his, guild? In any case, I feel sure that we can expect some interesting techniques.

Place your bets, folks, for the final fight of today.

The horn blows, and the two combatants circle each other, neither willing to take the offensive. Mogwai moves his whip like a snake, flickering and slithering over the ground with small cracking noises, trying to intimidate his larger opponent. Efeye's expression cannot be seen behind her veil however, the desert assassin gives nothing away. suddenly, quick as a scorpion, She (he) dives forward, slashing at the gremlin. While Mogwai dodges the first dagger, his arm, preparing to strike at the elf, is deeply slashed by Efeye's second dagger! The wound looks painful, and Mogwai hisses as he once more cracks his whip. Avoiding the lash with blinding speed, Efeye runs the offending hand right through, such that the dagger is stuck! Panicking, Mogwai lashes out, but the blow is easily dodged, and instead of using his daggers, Efeye heaves his body against the gremlin, who is bowled over. A smear of blood is left on the stone as Mogwai stands unsteadily back up, just in time to be hacked in the foot by Efeye. The poor green creature once more crashes to the earth, unable to stand. In a final, incredible burst of agility, Efeye lunges and with both daggers from opposite ends, cleaves the gremlin from sternum to shoulder bathing the entire arena in a spray of slick blood. With a tiny gurgle from inside the helm, Mogwai's small body shudders, and falls still.
The sexually confused elf stands up, removes the helm, and gently closes the gremlin's eyes, whispering a soft blessing...

Congratulations Efeye, you have made it to the quarter finals! You have 224 points to spend.

God man, where to start?

The graphics are fucked so bad I don't know where to begin explaining everything screwed up with the raws and the mismatch.

There are various other kobold playable mods, in fact the entire mastershit mess is a grab-bag of whatever Meph could stuff in there, and it's all available elsewhere.

After that point, we could start talking about actual helpful solutions.

I put my siege on hold to watch my gladiator kick some ass and go see John Wick 2. I return to watch Fath lead a charge against the squad of archers that have been camped out on the ledge plinking at my dwarves. This is a pretty dangerous situation for my soldiers, a single accurate bolt will move through the whole line of dwarves until one blocks it, fails to dodge, or gets hit. An unlucky dodge could send a dwarf falling to their doom. There are only 4 to 5 tiles of landing area on z-levels below them before the long drop to the lake.

This spearmaster is Olon Kashelzed. He's the grandson of two marksdwarves. One of them was Avuz Rothtun, Relicwebs' very first werechameleon exile, the victim of a different forgotten beast than the one that killed the werechameleons I mentioned earlier, and the first death at Relicwebs. His grandmother and his aunt are both elite marksdwarves and providing fire support at this very moment.
Several years ago Olon put down his adamantine spear and has never picked it up again, and he's never told a soul why. He's a damn good fighter even without it, so i never really worried too much about it. Today it turned out to be a fortuitous decision, because Olon just dodged off the cliff. Rather than fall a few z-levels and slam into one of the ledges below, he grabbed on with his mysteriously-free hand and is beating the shit out of goblins on the z-level above with his shield.

The siege has been broken. Only 79 goblins this time, and no trolls or beak dog roasts. We had two pretty severe injuries. The Captain of The Diamond Gorges got a nasty head wound, lost an ear, and twisted her knee. An axelord got a bruised upper spine and his right wrist and elbow were torn up. They should both make a full recovery.
We also took our first ever prisoner, Stozu Emegngun the goblin bowman, who is so thoroughly mangled that I'll be surprised if he survives.
The siege happened right at the beginning of autumn, and there's just no way I'll be able to clean it up before the caravan arrives. Last time that happened only one wagon imploded and the rest of the merchants traded normally. Hopefully that will be the case again.
Also, teeth were a mistake.

So... freexp then?
>>
>>168869094
I go back and forth between missing the explosions of teeth and being glad I added whichever tag it was that keeps them from exploding everywhere.
>>
>>168870601
The aesthetics of it are nice, but the logistics are awful. Instead of having ~100 corpse dumping jobs from this smallish siege I'm going to have ~1000, and most of them will be teeth. The item count doesn't really bother me, I'm approaching 50k boulders anyway. The problem for Relicwebs is that's the only place merchants can spawn on the whole map, so there's a danger of losing a year's worth of trade if I don't interrupt the whole fort's routine to dump teeth from the mountainside.
There's an embark tile of badlands in the southeast corner of the map, on the other side of the lake, and in the early years of the fort I tried having the depot there, but merchants wouldn't spawn there even if there was no way to access it from elsewhere. No invaders or monsters have ever approached from there either. It's pretty annoying and probably a bug caused by Relicwebs' unusual topography, but we've adapted well enough.
>>
>>168871496
Is there no way at all to control where merchants will spawn? Half my embark is evil and they always come from where the rain is.
>>
>>168866459
Did she survive?
>>
>>168871869
Bridge the entire edge of the map off except the desired directions?

Use dfhack to put empty air tiles on the floors where they could spawn?

Put fortifications around the map like that with dfhack?
>>
>>168871869
Normally there is. If your depot can only be accessed from a given area then merchants will always spawn there. Or at least that's been a consistently observed feature for as long I can remember. That's why I say it's probably a bug in Relicwebs' case that they wouldn't spawn on the southeastern corner when the depot was there.

>>168872326
She did. She landed on the ledge 3z down and was back in the fight after she recovered from her stun. There was a scary moment when a spearmaster dodged off the same spot, landed on her tile, and she dodged south again and down one more z. Another dodge in that direction would've led to a 47z drop.
>>
>>168872882
I don't know why but it feels like you're mocking him.
>>
>>168873189
I don't know if he meant it mockingly or not, but those options would all work to restrict possible merchant spawns. The one option that doesn't require dfhack is a real pain in the ass to implement, though, and won't work if you have any ramps on your border.
>>
>>168873529
Yeah, I wasn't mocking at all, those are the only real options.

If you try to set it up so there is only one route from the edge of the map that could accomodate a wagon arriving and heading to your depot those cunts will spawn on the other edge with a "their wagons bypassed your site because they're cuntbags" basically.
>>
>>168873762
Setting up a single route to the depot usually works to restrict merchant spawns. It's not unusual at all for an embark to have areas where merchants could spawn with no path to the depot, but they don't spawn there if the depot is accessible from elsewhere. Getting bypassed by the wagons only happens when there's no wagon-to-depot-accessible area at all for them to enter from. In all the forts I've played since I started Relicwebs has been the only exception to this I've ever seen.
There was semi-famous fort on bay12 whose name escapes me now that was a really great example of how to exploit this mechanic. The fort consisted of a square tower in the center of the embark cut off entirely from the surface and a giant dwarf statue. There was an elevated 3 tile wide bridgeway that led to the edge of the map, and wagons would spawn on the bridge exclusively because it was the only way into the fort. It was a pretty elegant solution. I think invasions spawned on it too, but I might be misremembering that part.

>>
>>168876606
You can place tables next to each other to give the aesthetic impression of a longer table, but mechanically, each table is treated separately and is useless without a chair orthogonally adjacent to it. Having more than one chair orthogonally adjacent to a table(section) does not allow the table(section) to be used by more than one dwarf at a time, though they can use table(sections) which are adjacent to each other if each has its own chair.

Welcome, ladies and gentlemen, to Round 2 of the SECOND DWARF FORTRESS GENERAL GLADIATOR TOURNAMENT!!!

We started with sixteen brave fighters, all willing to risk their lives and prove their worth in order to earn gold, glory, and the right to call themselves Champion of /DFG/. Now, all that remain are eight. These hardy combatants have already shown themselves to be dangerous warriors, a cut above the rest of the rabble that are oh so eager to throw their bodies into the grinder. But they cannot share the prize, so more of them must fight, and more of them must die. Only four shall leave the arena alive today, and we are about to find out who they are. For blood and bone, for fame and fortune, and above all, for Armok, let us see them FIGHT!

Our first battle of the day is between the already famous and popular Annie Mae, the dangerous elf swordswoman on a journey to rescue her kidnapped younger brother, and Buckethead Båx, an intellectual and a scholar first, and a fighter only second.

Annie Mae is already an expert swordswoman, and has not been idle between matches, constantly training and waiting for the day she may defeat her enemies and win the tournament. She still chooses to enter the arena naked, and while we certainly aren't complaining, we wonder why she does so. Perhaps it has to do with some strange elven magic? Regardless, it has not hindered her so far

Buckethead Båx declined to comment on his upcoming fights, only chuckling to himself as he returned to reading Bosa Dawkins "The Armok Delusion". In any case, he certainly seems ready for this fight, with a brand new steel spear, fresh off the caravan. Such a deadly tool in the hands of a skilled warrior is a frightening thought indeed.

Place your bets folks, for the second day of the tournament. Has. BEGUN!

Rate my gobbo fort in progress. I have to say, Its pretty fun playing these guys because the lack of a need for food and water means I can focus exclusively on building stuff. And in addition to that, when the fort is inevitably destroyed by some foul beast, I can reclaim it using a different civ like dorfs or humans and just focus on food since the rest of the fort has been carved out already.

As the first fight begins, it seems like our two combatants are an even match, as neither are able to land any blows on their opponent. Båx's spear is like a striking snake, darting forward and back, seeking the tiniest of openings in the elf girl's defense. Annie Mae on her part fights with the determination of a protagonist in a highly rated Japanese cartoon, it is clear failure is not an option. Suddenly, Båx, having been slashed in the hand by the fencer's blade, flies into a blind rage at this upstart elf! Screeching autistically and no longer euphoric, he grips his spear more like one would a hammer, attacking the elf like a ferocious wild beast! Has he forgotten his own ideals about the merit of intelligence? It certainly looks that way, for his reckless attacks leave a wide opening for Annie Mae to lunge forward, and she scores a deep blow to the side of his neck, just beneath the helm! Cutting through, flesh, fat, and bone, blood pours from the wound in a crimson tide! Even as Båx rears back, clutching at his throat, the elf's blade flashes, and completely shears off one of Båx's arms! Horribly wounded, Båx stumbles away, aghast, only to have Annie Mae strike a third time! The sword plunges deep into Båx's unprotected midsection, and with a motion that parts the flesh from sternum to crotch, the goblin's stinking guts are torn from him, landing on the arena floor in a foul pile. From there it doesn't take long for the fencer to bring Båx to the ground by cutting his legs out from under him. The green gladiator refuses to give up, however, and keeps struggling, even as Annie Mae hacks and slashes at the unfortunate warrior. In a final, powerful swing of her sword, Annie Mae lands the bloody death blow, opening the goblin from the neck down. As blood pools around the corpse, she smiles and wipes the gore from her blade

Congratulations, Annie Mae! You have made it to the semifinals. you have 222 points to spend.

What a gruesome end to the green-skinned philosopher. Perhaps in the next life, he will find happiness. Unless he was right all along, and no such thing exists. If so... well... sucks to be him.

Annie Mae has once more shown her skill with a blade, well done to her and her manager! You are one step closer to completing the Tournament arc of her story.

For our next duel, we have the blue-haired knife fighter himself, Ecstasy (aka Darks) now sole representative for the humans, against the quirky, cheerful, minecart-wielding kea man, I WAS RECENTLY LASHED IN HALF.

Finishing off his last opponent with extreme egde-udice, Ecstasy spent all his time since then brooding in the darkest corner of the arena tavern, making snide comments at whoever passed him by and cleaning his fingernails with a knife. Somehow, he also managed to obtain a wondrous adamantine cloak, rarest and most valuable of materials. Shall this be enough to protect him from the incredible weight of the minecart? Or like so many others, will he find himself kea'd in action?

I WAS RECENTLY LASHED IN HALF has gained a large following amongst the spectators of his last match, both for the incredible way he fights, and due to the loveable shenanigans he gets up to while not fighting, such as stealing shiny things, destroying the furniture, and killing sheep. I might also mention he has a large group of people hoping he doesn't survive this next fight. Mostly sheep farmers.

Place your bets folks, for the second fight of the day will commence shortly.

Sweetheart, isn't it time for you to get back to class before you get detention and make daddy mad enough to start with the belt again?

A mod in df terminology is a change to the raws from the vanilla ones. Tweak mods with a few small changes, full conversion mods which uproot and completely replace everything, and all sorts in between.

A tileset is the little pink and white or clear and white images in the df/data/art folder which the game uses to display objects, buildings, surfaces, creatures, and so forth.

A graphics set can be used to override the vanilla use of letters+some color variation for different animals and the various major races/beasts. You can find those in df/raw/graphics or your df/data/save/region*/raw/graphics folders.

There are other things like utilities and visualizers, dfhack and Armok Vision being two. They're usually in their own folder, though dfhack stuff will usually be in the df/hack folder and the only stuff most people need to ever change will be under the df/hack/scripts, df/hack/scripts/gui, and df/hack/plugins folders.

I'm trying to be clear because you don't seem to understand how things work, and I worry you might be a bit slow given your bitchy behavior in here today.

Recess is over, scoot.

A tileset is an image file located in DF's art folder that the game reads to render its visual interface. Having never used one before, I can see how might have come to the conclusion that it's been used as a colloquialism. Indeed, the term is occasionally misused, so you're not alone fren! Generally it's misuse is connected to a reference to a graphics set. However the term has a specific use in the nomenclature of DF, and people who misuse it in thay way are typically corrected. As you appear to have not used it in that sense either, your usage doesn't qualify as the commonly employed misnomer either. But worry not, pal! We're all anonymous here, and now that you've been enlightened to you misuse of DF nomenclature, you can move forward without having to defend your pride against the wound of your apparently embarassing mistake.

I WAS RECENTLY LASHED IN HALF patiently waits while Ecstasy sprints over in his typical gay anime sprint. As soon as the edgy teen is in range the colourful cart-wielder attacks in an explosive burst of movement! Ecstasy, perhaps expecting the ploy, rolls to the side, allowing the heavy minecart to merely brush past his leg, instead of pulping it into the floor. Standing, he charges, and the two trade blows until the minecart manages to score a glancing blow to Ectsasy's shoulder. Nevertheless, the force behind the minecart causes the arm to twist in a painful looking way, and to gasps of the crowd, Ecstasy drops one of his daggers, unable to grasp it with his wounded arm! Snarling, Ecstasy redoubles his efforts, but is unable to get past the kea man's expert minecart-based defense strategy. In frustration , he changes tactics, and slams bodily into his smaller enemy. The strategy is successful, and as I WAS RECENTLY LASHED IN HALF tumbles away, still tightly gripping his weapon, Ecstasy scores two solid attacks. The kea man, now bleeding from one arm and with only one leg able to support himself, is unable to evade the followup strike to his foot. Crippled and looking more and more desperate, the kea man is nigh helpless against the blindingly fast attacks of the teenage edgelord, and soon Ecstasy, using only his one dagger, reverses it and dashes past the wounded kea man. I WAS RECENTLY LASHED IN HALF stares down at stump where his arm used to be, and many of his fans in the audience groan and wail. Unable to heft his minecart with only one arm, and afflicted by a myriad of agonizing wounds, the poor parrot man falls unconscious. Ecstasy swaggers over and kneels over the prone form of his adversary, before slowly, gruesomely, pushing his dagger into the base of the skull.

Congratulations Ecstasy, aka, Darks! You have made it to the semi-finals. You have 210 points to spend.

It is a bitter drink to swallow for many of his fans, but the unfortunate bird man has finally gone to join the great kea in the sky. Much to the relief of sheep farmers and furniture artisans everywhere.

Ecstasy, through smart strategy and an unrelenting desire to do really, really edgy things, you have succeeded in defeating the much loved I WAS RECENTLY LASHED IN HALF. You also have 220 points to spend on the next round, not just 210. The adamantine cloak was a clever solution to the lead minecart.

Our next fight is a classic. Goblin versus Dwarf. We've seen both these lovely ladies fight, and each one is a fearsome fighter. There will be tension in the audience today, as a large group of goblins have travelled from the dark fortress to see this fight. Security will have to be extra cautious...

Brunhilda. You all know her, the proud, bearded serving wench of the Leaky Spigot. Popular for her jovial temperament, entertaining fighting style, and really large... uh... axe. She's come equipped to this fight more seriously, after hearing what she would be facing, and has customized a mail shirt so that it doesn't interfere with her bet. Protecting everything but her chest, Brunhilda is armed, armoured, and ready.

Hrum the goblin, raised by trolls, has also decided to imitate these "civilised" warriors, and don an interesting set of armour gifted to her by the newly arrived goblins. Resplendent in her black bronze gear, she looks as though she's hungry, not just for a nice, bloody fight, but perhaps for a taste of what makes her brawny opponent so strong.

Place your bets folks, mountainhome or dark fortress? Axe, or mace? Greenskins or Beardies. LETS HAVE IT!!

possible combat theme: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s5nF7qY5ZEk

A long, deep horn sounds and the duelists immediately attack each other with equal ferocity. As the two warriors remember the atrocities committed in the many wars between these two peoples, a dark hatred born of deep-seated suffering, dating back to time immemorial, seems to gleam in the eyes of our gladiators. After a brief, frantic bout of back and forth exchanges, each combatant giving it their all, it is Brunhilda who draws first blood! Landing a minor blow on Hrum's hand, which only barely manages to break through the black bronze gauntlet and bloody the flesh. The fighting continues with renewed savagery, but due to the fighter's skills and their protective armour, it takes nearly a full minute until... yes... finally! Hrum lands a devastating strike on her opponents shoulder. While Brunhilda's armour protects her from most of the damage, the blow still manages to send her reeling back, and many of the dwarves in the audience start shouting and stamping as the copper shield drops with a clang from her nerveless fingers. Cursing in dwarven, Brunhilda charges at the smirking goblin, and strikes once! Twice! Thrice! On the fourth blow, Brunhilda twists her arm and sends the blade of her axe square into the foot of her foe. Removing it with a squelching sound just in time to parry the silver mace, she grins manically as Hrum howls, and attacks in a frenzy of berserk rage...

By Armok ladies and gentlemen, this fight is unlike any I've ever seen! Both warriors fight back and forth, neither gaining any significant advantage. It looks for all the world as if the two champions will fight ever on, neither besting the other, not until Armok unmakes the universe on his glowing anvil and we are all cast into the void. The dwarf, with a grim smile and a sharp axe, against the snarling, serrated teeth and blunt mace of the goblin. A bloody spray here, a blow to the gut there, until... YES! It seems that Brunhilda has managed to hew straight through Hrum's chain armour! Suddenly looking nervous, Hrum is put on the defensive, backing away from her laughing rival. The dwarves in the crowd are cheering themselves hoarse, while on the opposite end the goblins are jeering and screaming at their champion. Booming a dwarven battle chant, Brunhilda swings her axe, and Hrum, breathing heavily, desperately parries. Each time a little slower, a little weaker, until, with a mighty blow, Hrum's arm is sheared off and leaves a fine red mist as it spins through the air! Weaponless, Hrum screams and attacks with her serrated teeth, attempting to reach the throat of her foe. It is futile however, and Brunhilda swings her axe, violently bringing the goblin to the floor, unable to walk. She laughs as she swings again, and a bloody nub is all thats left of Hrum's ear. In a final gambit, the goblin champion flings herself at the dwarf, but the Brazen, Buxom Beauty sidesteps, and with the strength of the entire dwarven people brings her axe down, decapitating Hrum.

As the head bounces on the stones of the arena, a massive, deafening cheer erupts from the spectators.

Congratulations Brunhilda, that was an excellent fight! You have made it to the semi finals, and have 200 points to spend.

That was one of the greatest fights I have ever witnessed in the arena, well fought both Brunhilda and Hrum! For a long time, it looked as though the fight could have gone either way, but never bank on a dwarf to fail when her back is against the wall!

Well done Brunhilda, you have 278 points to spend on your next round (I don't know why the accountants keep making mistakes on the point allocations). You have proved a mighty fighter indeed, and I am sure a grand celebration awaits you at the Leaky Spigot.

For our final fight of the day, we have Bane, the slayer of Edim Sronghammer and bloodsucking schemer, against the wily and agile elf assassin, Efeye. It is clear that whoever of the two survives, they will have a tough road ahead of them against all these incredible warriors. But that is why they do this, isn't it? To fight, and even bleed for the chance to win such an event.

Bane has proven to be a frightening foe to go up against, from the vicious weaponry she chooses to fight with, to the intimidating iron mask she wears at all times. Not to mention her vile abilities to suck the blood straight out of any opponent. Also equipped with an adamantine cloak, will she fare as well as Ecstasy, and, after killing her foe, begin the next step of her master plan?

Efeye is still confused about what gender he/she really is, but don't let that distract you from the incredible speed and sharp knives they wield with utter mastery. Not wasting any time in her last fight, Efeye calmly outmaneuvered her little foe, and successfully defeated one of the most feared weapons in the arena. Will she do so again? or is it time for this elf to go back to the desert?

Place your bets folks, for the final of today's battles. It's bound to be a good one.

Bane vs Efeye.gif
1MB, 154x250px
>>168917389
The fight begins and immediately Bane speeds forward, propelling herself with a buzz of her wings only for Efeye to dive underneath her foe and hew off one of Bane's spindly feet! In a muffled voice Bane calls out to her enemy:

"We both know that I now have to kill you. You'll just have to imagine the fire!"

What follows is an incredible display of immense skill on both combatants part. Bane savagely lashes with her scourges at the elf, but every single blow is either evaded or blocked. Likewise, Efeye is unable to get past the storm of bronze, and Bane's cloak provides an unbreakable barrier against her blades. Back and forth, the twirling vortex of death dances, each combatant dead even, until eventually Bane recklessly dives from above! It almost looks like a smile flickers beneath the veil, as Efeye once more dives beneath her foe and severs Bane's leg in a jet of ichor! Undeterred, Bane presses the attack, now forced to rely only on her wings. The buzzing grows louder as neither fighter backs down, and the battle grows still more intense. The slightest error on either warrior's part shall surely mean their death! And so it goes, with Bane slightly overextending once more, Efeye plunges her dagger into an outstretched hand, and, leaving it in there, slips past Bane's guard, burying her other dagger deeply in the mosquito woman's remaining leg! Yanking both daggers out in a spray of gore, Efeye renews the pressure. It is clear now that Bane is badly wounded, and suffers more and more debilitating wounds until, finally, she lands a hit! Raking the flesh of Efeye's exposed foot, her triumph is short lived. Knowing she cannot pierce the magically woven adamantine, the assassin brilliantly bites down on her smaller enemy's torso and shakes it around! The cloak is no defense against the violent movement, and Bane collapses to the earth, her torso gushing ichor.

Congratulations, Efeye, You have made it to the semifinals! You have 246 points to spend.

And so the Mosquito man (woman) falls. Brought down by the twin daggers, we shall never know what kind of machiavellian plan she had prepared, and perhaps, it is a relief that we shall be spared such a thing.

Well done Efeye, you have defeated the terrifying Bane, and done so with your usual cold, calculated attitude. Your next opponent will be the stronk and burly Brunhilda, may you and your manager plan wisely for tomorrow.

That concludes day two of the /dfg/ Gladiator Tournament. Tomorrow we shall only have two fights for the semifinals, so I'll include the battle royale in the same day. The last day will be all about the grand final.

Thanks everyone, today was a ton of fun. It felt pretty good to see everyone so excited for the fights, and making wagers and stuff. Keen for tomorrow.

>>

That's probably something that mostly developed through the fighting, thanks to the great flavour added by Tourneyanon.

All the silly mooks that died early hardly got to develop any personalities.
>>
>>168927679
>>168928086
The best example is Brunhilda.

She was originally just a meme characters by some fag with a bearded lady fetish. Her original bio just says "she has big boobs and beard lol".

Then the Tourneyfag made up her greater backstory, with the comfy Leaky Spigot, and how she was close friends with the other dwarf that died, and so on. She went from being a silly meme character to being a cool character with a decent story.

What are y'all currently doing in adventure mode? I'm having fun playing a demonic trap who's turned into an alcoholic from seeing so many of his friends die. Now he just sort of lives in an abandoned house at the south end of town and brews his own shitty beer to get drunk off of. From time to time, he takes breaks from wallowing in his misery to try and help the city with a problem. The last big thing he did was kill the tyrannical vampire leader who ruled his civ for centuries. At first he was content to let it be, but the thing kept feeding on the townsfolk and the whole city was gonna become a ghost town, so he rallied the local mercs and they stormed the castle.

I wish living in a city had more depth to it though. Like I'd love to be a shop owner or something.

Currently looking into starting a new adventurer that goes around to different taverns entertaining the patrons.

Fighting goblins can only entertain a man for so long.

what setting do I change at adv world gen to make more towers?
>>
>>168960828
age
>>
>>168960990
what about number of secrets what does that do
>>
>>168960828
Number of secrets and number of entities.

One anon was doing extensive research on towers some time ago, and in the end he was getting more than 10 towers per world.
You could look for that in the archives.
>>
>>168961171
alright I'll look for it

thanks mate
>>
>>168961123
I think that makes it more likely over time for necromancers to crop up, but ultimately you're never going to get a young world with many necromancers. You gotta go past like 500 years before they start becoming more plentiful.

I generated a giant evil desert world where humanity has scattered across the entire continent and there's only one dwarven nation left. My Lord sent me to kill this gorlak, who according to Legends has done absolutely nothing wrong. What a rough world this is.
>>
>>168961171
>>168961327
That was me, but it's been probably 2 years now, so you probably won't find the research in the archives. I can give the gist of the results, though.

The biggest limit on tower generation is the number of civs. Every human and dwarf civ has the chance to gen with a death god. Every death god has the chance of gifting a slab to a mortal obsessed with their own mortality. While civs will sometimes have more than one death god, the gods will never give more than one slab. So more civs=more death gods=more necromancers.
The next limit is the number of secrets. It's pretty self-explanatory. Each slab contains a secret, and once they've all been handed out no more towers. If you're playing with anything close to a default worldgen you're all but guaranteed to have more secrets than gods of death in any size world.
So if you want a ton of towers increase the number of civs a lot. A whole lot. Doing 80-100 civs in small worlds was enough to reach the default secret cap in less than 50 years of worldgen IIRC. I don't have the numbers anymore, but that should give you an idea of the kinds of ranges you should be looking at.

Did you increase the number of titans as well? I thought a huge amount of beasts would hold civilizations down.
>>
>>168963827
No, that's with the default beast counts. Having a ton of civs in small/smaller/pocket worlds (and probably in larger worlds too, but I didn't test with them because worldgen takes too long) will cause the age to change really early to reflect whichever beast or beasts get a killing spree first. Something to do with the relative power of each civ being so low because they have so many competitors. Toady broke age changes in a .40 update, so this is one of the only ways to see them reliably during worldgen now.

noob here

it's winter and apparently my food stores were shit, so brewing is going slowly (not enough plump helmets for booze and food)

and now two dwarves have dropped dead of thirst because all my water sources are frozen

i tried making a furnace right next to the ice in the hopes that something would kick in and melt the ice so i'd have some water, but it didn't work

how can I deal with this situation so my fortress doesn't croak atm?

how can I avoid this in the future even in times of famine?

I'd like to address this before I hit the tavern tonight. First of all, I just got out of the depot with my bitch Sazir. She's 190 pounds, 4'3", and has the beard and face of a goddess. You know how I pulled her? By being the alpha miner. Something you treefuckers don't know shit about. All you know about is being stinky hippies, while I'm out there in the club dropping goblets and vomiting on my bitch every night with the finest plump wines in the country.

Did I rub beards with my bitch just a minute ago? Yea, it was clutch, and that bitch would never cheat on a greek god looking specimen like myself, I give it to her so good. Don't believe me? Ask your girlfriend. Know what I'm saying? Face, pussy.

I am the most attractive dorf any of you will ever have the privilege of being amongst. I bench 440 pounds now and do 2.5 sit-ups a day. My abs are hard as shit to find and my beard is the size of a small child. When I walk down the street I can smell your girlfriend's pussy getting wet. She wants to fucks with a real boss, not a chump change coward like yourself. Just playin, you ain't even got a girl. All you got is tree bark. You hump that shit, imma be playing with my girls beard in the club.
>>
>>168973410
Did you read the wiki quickstart? With that many plots you can feed a thousand dwarves. Farms are infamous for producing too much, if you have a capable planter and a few plots your fort is set for a long time.

Water should always be the last resort, your dwarves should always have booze available.
>>

I saw Urist at the trade depot in Assaultvirgins yesterday. I told him how cool it was to meet a stunted little being in person, but I didn’t want to be a douche and bother him and ask him for autographs or anything.

He said, “Oh, like you’re doing now?”

I was taken aback, and all I could say was “huh?” but he kept cutting me off and going “oh? ooh? oooh?” and closing his hand shut in front of my face. I walked away and continued with my shopping, and I heard him vomit as I walked off. When I came to pay for my stuff up front I saw him trying to walk out the doors with like fifteen plump helmets in his hands without paying.

The dwarf at the depot was very nice about it and professional, and was like “Sir, with your trade goods such as they are, I can't fathom you getting all these items” At first he kept pretending to be tired and not hear him, but eventually turned back around and brought them to the depot.

When he took the mushrooms and started weighting them, he stopped him and told him to weight them each individually “to prevent any elven infetterence,” and then turned around and winked at me. I don’t even think that’s a word. After he scanned each plump helmet and put them in a bag and started to say the price, he kept interrupting him by barfing really loudly.

Welcome, ladies and gentlemen, to the third day of the official Dwarf Fortress General Gladiator Tournament!!!

Yesterday we witnessed some truly spectacular fights, and our four semifinalists have proven themselves the best of the best. Each and every one of them has struggled mightily to reach this point, and they will struggle still, to reach the illustrious beacon that is the famre, fortune and eternal glory that awaits, as Champion of /DFG/. We all have our favourite champions, and hope and pray to Armok that they may survive another bloody round in our very own arena. Armok cares not, however, for who wins or loses. Armok cares only for one thing...

BLOOD!!!

And it is for Armok to command, and it is for us to obey, therefore let these foolish tongues fall silent, and make way for the song of steel! The cry of arms! The wail of widows! Let the battles… COMMENCE!!

Our first duel features two agile and very, very skilled gladiators. Human against Elf.

Annie Mae, the fiercely talented and determined elf swordswoman, who has travelled far and struggled long to reach the coveted position at the end of this tournament. She believes that it will aid her in the recovery of her kidnapped brother, who was spirited away mere hours after she graduated from the illustrious Finarfin's Elven School of Fencing Finesse with the highest honours. Perhaps it will help, and perhaps it won't, but whatever her goals, she has performed well so far. Slayer of the wrestling legend Restive Win, defeated by her in the first round, and slicer of the steel-speared goblin Buckethead Båx, her achievements have gained her a large following amongst the tourney spectators.
When interviewed about her upcoming match, she calmly responded that she was doing her duty in order to save her family, and that whatever happened, she was going to rescue her beloved Otouto.

Ecstasy (aka, Darks) is still a mystery to a lot of us. The young man appeared in the arena, signed the register, and despite acting and dressing like a petty street thug, proved his worth in two consecutive matches, callously slicing up fellow human halberdier Li, and brutally stabbing to death the beloved kea man, I WAS RECENTLY LASHED IN HALF. Perhaps he is in it for the glory. Perhaps he is in it for the chance to kill. Whatever his desires are, we shall certainly spectate this match with great enthusiasm.
When asked how he felt coming into the fight against Annie Mae, he smirked, leaned into the reporter and sneered "I just want you to know, elf, that this is nothing personnel. Kid."

The horn blows, deep and booming, and the battle commences. Our two brave champions begin their ritual of death, bounding with great leaps towards each other, weapons at the ready. They clash with a shriek of metal, Ecstasy laughs maniacally as he twirls his daggers, the blue blade glinting like a spark of electricity as it flashes back and forth, clashing against the comparatively dull iron sword of Annie Mae. The unsmiling elf flits about, easily keeping pace with her dark and edgy foe. The adamantine cloaks flutter about our gladiators, the magical cloth undulating like rippling water, and with a dextrous riposte, it is Annie Mae who lands the first strike, as her sword clips one of Ecstasy's fingers. It is but a scratch, however, and he licks the blood from his hand, smiling through bared teeth, before pressing the attack with a snarl. None of his blows can bypass the elf's guard, despite his strikes coming faster and faster, and he throws himself recklessly at Annie Mae, his lips contorted into a sneer. Nimbly stepping back, she slices him deeply in the foot, and Ecstasy stumbles to the ground, unable to stand. Leaving a spattering of blood, Ecstasy viciously stabs at the elf, who counters with a blindingly fast strike of her sword. Managing to raise a cloak-covered arm just in time, Ecstasy blocks the attack, causing his forearm to be slammed aside, and the crowd begins shouting as the copper dagger clatters to the stone floor! With his adamantine dagger held close, he tries to go on the offensive again, but only suffers another jab to his foot. With one of his feet now hanging only by a thin strip of flesh, Ecstasy shields himself with his cloak as he retreats.

Struck again and again by Annie Mae's sword, he lashes out angrily. Annie Mae slips past the clumsy attack, and actually cuts off Ecstasy's foot! Screaming in pain, Ecstasy can only raise his arm to deflect the next blow, which slices deeply into his flesh. The audience are screaming and cheering, as the flashing blue dagger falls to the earth, leaving the young human defenceless. Glaring at his opponent with tears in his eyes, Ecstasy lunges at her, trying to grapple his weaker foe. Annie Mae easily avoids him, and actually slaps him on the rear with the flat of her blade, sending the boy tumbling forward, his pride (and backside) stinging.
"I've bested you, Ecstasy. Surrender, and you won't have to die." murmurs the elf, her large, pitying eyes focused on the injured human before her.
"You underestimate my power!" Spits Ecstasy vehemently. "I hate you!"
In a final, futile attempt, the wounded boy attacks, half-blinded by tears and pain.
"So be it." the elf whispers sadly.
Over the course of several minutes, Ecstasy is left bleeding from over a dozen wounds, Annie Mae attacking with terrible speed from all sides, slashing at any exposed flesh unprotected by the cloak, while Ecstasy weakly lurches after her. It feels like an age passes until, at long last, he falls to the floor in a gently lapping pool of his own blood, breathing out a final, drawn out sigh. As the audience cheer at her victory, Annie Mae only stares down mournfully at the body, and gently whispers something to the still form of the boy.

Congratulations, Annie Mae. You have made it to the finals. You have 302 points to spend for the next round.

Annie Mae victory theme: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rYcCcbh9_yg
Ecstasy may have been an edgelord, but he truly went out giving it his all. For that, long may he be remembered. We have no information about the boy's family, and none have come to claim his body, so he shall be buried in the catacombs of the arena, where all those who have fallen in battle may find their final rest.

Well done Annie Mae, you have made it to the finals, and shall face your greatest foe yet. Although victorious, our champion does not look as though she has won, and retreated back to her quarters as soon as she left the arena. Hopefully, your brother, somewhere, will hear and know of your tremendous efforts and sacrifices to save him.

Our next fight is the time honoured rivalry between the tall, slender elves, and squat, burly dwarves.

On one side, Brunhilda, the champion of the dwarves. The tournament has been a taxing affair for her, as full of loss as victory. Unable to avenge her fall friend Edim, She has marked Efeye as the thief, for stealing Bane's life while it rightfully belonged to the dwarf's axe. Since her last fight, she has been training ferociously, and refuses all drink and pleasure until her foe lies dead, headless and bloody.

The mysterious and frightening assassin Efeye is the other fighter to grace the arena. Her motivations as obscure as her gender, this androgynous elf fights for some unfathomable reason. All we know is that she desires above all to reach the final fight. But against who? and why? We tried to interview about these questions we had, but were utterly unable to find her, until she appeared in the arena, ready for her bout with Brunhilda.

Place your bets folks, for this shall be the last fight before the battle royale.

The horn sounds, and the fight begins. Elf against Dwarf, axe against knife, speed versus strength. They clash together in a cacophony of violence. Both combatants battle on, bringing their blades together again and again. The armour of each combatant does it's work, and for several minutes, they struggle against each other, neither finding an opportunity to break their foe. Brunhilda is red in the face, her white teeth clearly visible, grinding together behind her beard, while Efeye's eyes are mere slits, narrowed in intense concentration. The crowd are silent, for once, staring transfixed at the fight raging in the arena, the only sounds being the CLANG of iron against iron. Roaring with bloodlust, Brunhilda swings her axe at a speed hitherto unseen, and catches Efeye off guard! The blow is aimed directly at the assassin's bare feet, and with a spray of blood Efeye falls, unable to stand. Yet even as the dwarves in the crowd cheer, Efeye takes advantage of Brunhilda's recovery by lashing out with her dagger and actually knocking Brunhilda straight off her feet, to land awkwardly on her leg. The heavy weight of a fully armoured dwarf proves too much, and Brunhilda struggles to rise. Now, with both gladiators on the ground, the fighting becomes bloodier and bloodier. Sweat and crimson droplets fly about, as the combatants each accrue numerous wounds. Suddenly, Efeye slips in a puddle of blood! Surpised and off balance, she is caught flailing for stability, and Brunhilda takes advantage by lunging and bringing her axe down with awesome strength! The elf screams hoarsely, the first noise we've heard from her today, and her left hand splatters on the floor, blood spurting from the stump it used to connect to! Panting, Brunhilda leans back, and roars her triumph into the sky, to loud cheering from the spectators.

She celebrates too soon, however, and in a blur of motion, her axe suddenly falls from her hand, followed by a wash of warm blood. She stares at her foe, who glares back with blazing eyes. Her stump cradled against her torso, Efeye flicks the blood off her second dagger, and readies herself for death or victory. For the first time, hesitation flickers in the eyes of our dwarven champion, but she brushes it away and ,attacks, aiming to crush the elf beneath her shield. Despite her best efforts, Brunhilda is steadily weakened, as Efeye hacks and jabs. Brunhilda fights back, landing several strikes, but such an ungainly object is no replacement for her axe, and Efeye shrugs off the blows with the determination to win at all costs. Lunging to bite her foe and tear her to pieces, Brunhilda is sent reeling with a savage jab of the elven dagger. Her beautiful beard slashed up, and with a profusely bleeding lip, Brunhilda flies into a rage, beating at her foe over and over again, but unable to land a solid blow! Efeye, backing up, seems to be losing ground until, with an uncannily fast roll, she leaps and plunges her dagger straight into the back of Brunhilda's neck! Not even iron mail can offer protection from such a blow, and her spine shatters with a terrible noise. Falling on her back, the dwarves in the crowd scream and openly weep as Brunhilda is brutally raked in the face by Efeye's nails, scoring bloody furrows and tearing out great clumps of hair! Bloodied, broken, exhausted, and pushed beyond her farthest limits, Brunhilda falls unconscious. Quickly, Efeye begins coldly dismantling her helpless foe, breaking several limbs with a number of holds, until finally she places her arm around Brunhilda's neck, and, almost gently, twists until a soft popping noise is heard. Letting the corpse slip to the floor, Efeye kneels next to the still form of Brunhilda, oblivious to the soft cries and hushed murmurs of the audience, and gently closes the dwarf's eyes.

Brunhilda's theme of loss: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F9hagVL-__c

Well fought, Brunhilda. You proved the worth of dwarven fighting over and over. Your defeat is no shame, and you may rest easily, knowing your ancestors smile upon you. There will be many tears shed at the Leaky Spigot tonight, and not a single dwarf that was present for your battle shall ever forget. Return to the stone, and be at peace.

Congratulations, Efeye. Through tenacity, dextrous cunning, and sheer willpower, you have defeated your dwarven enemy in a spectacular reversal. Do not think that your fight is over, however. You will be going up against Annie Mae, the only other elf in this tournament, and master swordswoman. But, perhaps you already know this, and that is why you entered the arena in the first place? I suddenly feel very concerned, for both parties involved in this gruesome game of death.

And so concludes the semifinals of the second Dwarf Fortress Gladiator Tournament. There will be a brief intermission, before the battle royale begins. All the gladiators who have fallen so far, including those who have just perished, will return and fight once more. Resurrected by the Blood-Priests of holy Armok, they are given a semblance of life, until all but one has returned to dust. The vanquishing conqueror who triumphs in this bloodbath will be blessed by the Holy Crimson Pope himself, and receive their full vitality once more.

Prepare yourselves, my brave spectators. Be still my beating heart. May Armok guide his chosen to victory.

Ladies and gentlemen of /dfg/. We have arrived at the thrilling conclusion of today's events.

The BATTLE ROYALE!!

All fourteen of the unfortunate souls who perished in the blood soaked stones of our arena have a chance to snatch back the life they lost, and so return back to their families, friends, or misery-filled lives. Arranged in a newly-built arena, they shall battle in a grand melee, to see which one of them is the best brawler of the fallen. And so the bodies shall pile high, the organs shall be flung about, and blood shall run in rivers of glorious red! Truly, Armok shall grant his blessing upon anyone who pleases him so, and Armok's rewards are mighty indeed!

Now, words must make way for sword. For spear. For lash and hammer.

Let the games...

BEGIN!!

The terrible, blackened skeleton of the former Champion hauls itself into the arena and bellows with a breath, thick and foul with sulfur! He has returned to wreak terrible vengeance on any being who disputes his title as Champion, and not magma nor death can cheat him of his rightful place!

He was old before many of them were even born, and this legendary Minotaur will prove it to them that no Champion of /DFG/ goes meekly to their death. by the fire in his eyes and the bones with which he shall break them, these gladiators shall know the wrath of STEN!!!

Will the undead Minotaur return to his former glory and snatch his life back? Do any of the newer gladiators stand a single chance to come back from the dead? How on earth does one kill that which is already dead?

The gods care not. They care only for one thing.

In the north of the arena, Li and Dovregubben trade blows savagely, both desperate to fight their way back to life. The troll swings his fists again and again, but is completely unable to hit the nimble halberdier! Li, in his calculated manner, systematically brings the troll to his knees, slicing and stabbing with deadly precision into the stony flesh of his foe. A crack of the blade, and Dovregubben, for the second time in this tournament, loses a tusk. Bleeding, broken-tusked and with his guts half hanging out, the troll's tiny eyes roll into it's skull and he collapses face first. Wasting no time, Li decapitates the troll, sending Dovregubben's head rolling. Li casts about for a new foe, and sprints off blade at the ready.

To the east of the battle, The Succ and Mogwai are engaged in a darting, dodging duel. Both of the small warriors dance nimbly around each other, unable to deliver any serious blows, until with a crack of the lash, The Succ is sent crashing to the stones mid leap! As he tries to stagger back up, Mogwai viciously lashes at him, each blow of the whip driving him further back into the ground, until with a final, terrible blow, tick man brains are splattered all over the ground. Looking about, Mogwai spots a golden opportunity, and scurries off...

Not far off, Bane is fighting in an extremely violent and gory one-on-one with Hurm! Bane seems to be struggling, as the goblin macewoman lands several destructive strikes, pulping limbs with every hit. Bane, now only able to hold onto one scourge, lands a desperate blow onto Hrum's mace arm, and the weapon skitters away! The situation reversed, Bane literally lashes all of Hrum's armour off in a bloody mist, and knocks her unconscious! Putting all her strength into the blow, she lashes the goblin's face off, and claims victory over her first foe...

The blow-by-blow is still entertaining and helps clear up a lot of detail, like I only know Bax got me and Brun because they were the only combatants right there, least I think Bax did Brun in, a lot of the details are harder to identify, like who re-dead'D Stenbones?

To the south, Edim goes straight for the champion Minotaur, and does well, quickly fracturing a number of bones and even breaking off small chunks, heedless of the terrible wounds Sten's horns are inflicting upon him. He fights in a berserk rage, until, tired of this foolish midget's attacks Sten rears back and savagely headbutts him, knocking the old dwarf out cold. Sten falls on the unconscious dwarf and tears into him with relish, ripping and tearing, until he finally cracks the dwarf's skull and splatters his grey matter all over the stones in a gory wave.

Further away, Båx dances around whitey, slashing and stabbing at him while cackling and evading his blows. The poor, flustered bear man stumbles about swiping drunkenly at his nimble foe, until he falls to the ground with a torn leg muscle. Båx strikes quickly, and Whitey the Pooh is stabbed deeply in the chest, and literally has his heart torn up. The wound is terrible to behold, but the bear still fights on even as his blood gushes out uncontrollably. After a surprising amount of time, he bleeds to death, and Båx goes to find more victims, leaving the haemorrhageing bear where he lies.

To the west, a truly incredible sight can be seen! Brunhilda has entered one of the incredibly famed dwarven Martial Trances, and is currently fighting Restive Win, Ecstasy and Koksal all at once! For over an entire minute, she skillfully parries every blow thrown her way, her eyes rolled back into her skull so that only the whites can be seen. Moving more with natural instinct than any learned skill, Brunhilda moves as though she were fighting against three old men! With a sudden, violent roar, she flings herself into Ecstasy, bodyslamming into the ground and smashing him ferociously. She uses the sudden breathing room to turn on the terrified Koksal, and with unnatural speed, tears the roach man to pieces, cleaving him with a blow that bisects him from the waist! Covered in ichor, she snarls like a beast and begins tearing at Ecstasy, even using her teeth as weapons, to shake the poor human about with superdwarven strength. Finishing the boy with a powerful decapitating strike, she spins on the spot, and, seemingly without even looking, swings her axe at the Kea man who was sneaking up behind her. The axe blade parts the flesh like paper, and bird innards spill onto the floor. The bird man blanches, but not for long, as a second strike sends I WAS RECENTLY LASHED IN HALF to the floor, headless.

The last fighter in the west, Restive Win, stares in horror as the utterly blood-soaked, berserk dwarf advances upon him. He raises his fists, crosses his chest in a silent prayer, and steps forward. Needless to say, after wiping the blood from her eyes, Brunhilda stares out across the battlefield, searching for her next opponent.

With over half the gladiators dead, an incredibly violent melee erupts in the southeast corner of the Arena. Buckethead Båx, Sten, Li, Mogwai and Bane are all embroiled in a terrible clash, of such brutality and gore I have never seen in this arena before.

Sten, completely ignoring the injuries he sustained from his fight with Edim, charges after Båx, and roaring in fury, swings his terrible horns this way and that, trying to turn the goblin into a red smear. The nimble spearman dodges about and chips away at the blackened bone, fighting with the frantic desperation of one who has his life on the line. Surprisingly, Li joins the fray, his halberd still stained in the cyan blood of trolls. Together, they force the Minotaur back, and it looks as though Sten might be on the verge of defeat! However, Båx is not the kind of goblin to let such an opportunity pass, and literally stabs Li in the back! Horribly wounded, Li is beset on two sides by both the enraged undead Minotaur, and the sneaky jabbing of Båx. Out of nowhere, Brunhilda slams into Li, pushing him away from the melee, and actually takes the Minotaur on alone!

Båx, having been attacked from behind by Mogwai, the furtive gremlin lasher, gleefully teaches the foolish whip-wielder not to make light of goblinkind. Charging, Båx sends Mogwai crashing to the floor, and brutally makes sure he stays there, by impaling his leg, and rendering his whip arm impotent with a bloody flick of the spear. The terrified gremlin scurries back screaming, only to make the mistake of bumping into Brunhilda's legs. Mogwai looks up, just in time to see the axe swing down to remove his head...
>>
>>169030731

Båx is forced once more to protect his rear, as a tired and bleeding bane, missing hands, limbs and even her proboscis, lashes him in he back! The wound is easily shrugged off however, and Buckethead Båx makes short work of the mosquito woman. He wields the spear in a blur, and Mosquito juices fly everywhere, as Bane is rapidly dismembered and reduced to a weakly struggling wreck. Bringing his spear down to smite his opponent, Båx shears away a huge chunk of Bane's lower body, ending the unfortunate masked warrior instantly.

Left alone for a second and spying a horribly mutilated Li, Sten gallops over and inflicts terrible, gushing wounds on the human, chomping at the flesh and savagely goring the screaming man's body. Distracted by this delicious morsel in front of him, Sten Ignores the sudden reappearance of Brunhilda hacking at him, and so it takes a moment to register when his head is sent flying, cleanly separated from his body by a dwarven axe. The twisted, cracked skull seems to shudder for a moment, and lies still, the burning flames in it's sockets extinguished. Sten has finally been laid to rest!

In the arena when you add a glove or gauntlet or boot you get one glove or gauntlet or boot.

Last time I checked when you add them in an embark profile you get a pair, just like if you specify in the military screen "helm, body armor, gauntlets, leg armor, boots" they'll wear a helm, breastplate, two gauntlets, greaves, and a pair of boots, but if you specify the items directly you have to select each glove/shoe.

Using walls as magma casts is actually pretty common for those who build with obsidian.

Staring at the lifeless skeleton of Sten, Brunhilda turns to look at Li. The human is curled into a ball, his mutilated and ravaged body weeping blood. His halberd, forgotten, lies several paces away. There is no hope for this traveller from afar, and moving closer, Brunhilda delivers the gift of mercy, ending the warrior's suffering.

Båx turns to see that the only living beings left in the arena are Brunhilda and himself. Seeing the droop of her shoulders and the sweat running in rivulets down her face, Båx moves in for the kill. The two blades clash, the noise ringing clearly in the comparative silence of the gore-slicked battlefield. Back and forth, the two opponents move, though it is clear that Brunhilda is unsteady on her feet. Exhausted after the incredible display of skill and endurance from before, her blows come more slowly, weaker. Her blade is dull, her arms heavy, her armour cracked. Båx eventually wears her down, and strikes her directly in the leg. Sagging, with blood running down her leg. Brunhilda struggles on, even unto the end. It is no use, however, and Båx lands another strike, sending the axe dropping from the torn muscles of her arm.

Shaking her head, Brunhilda lurches forward, again bringing her shield up over her head, as she had done in the past against her hated elven foe. Too slowly, however, and she is brought back to the earth heavily. Båx jeers, and as the dwarf lays there, a small stream of tears well up in her eyes. Unable to rise again, Brunhilda, perhaps mercifully, blacks out.

As the green-skinned gladiator pulls the spear out of her body, a weak cheer resounds from the goblins in the audience. The rest of the spectators, perhaps having had more than their fill of death, remain silent. Båx grins, and walks out of the arena.

Alive.
