oh yeah, arctan came in handy from my previous player controller but I was having trouble converting it to relative rotation

it just seems weird to me that I have to have those two if statements separated like that for rotation, maybe its just ugly code but the order the variables are updated it determines it needs to stay that way. i'm probably just overthinking, at least it works...

I've changed up the controls a bit. Originally, pressing up would cause you to ollie, then in mid air, pressing up again would slam the skateboard down and make you jump higher. This remains unchanged. When in mid air, pressing down would slam the skateboard down, and pressing it again would slam you onto the skateboard. Now, pressing left does what down previously did, and pressing down slams you and the skateboard onto the ground at the same time. Having to hammer the button twice seemed unnecessary and annoying. (Also I've only managed to get past this part where I die here once over the last half hour.)

Same behavior as R-Type force, also in this game the punches pierce shields.
Example there is a stationary medium enemy in one level which is inmune to hits in the back, you could ignore that with force punches.
Key differences with R-Type force:
- Don't stop enemy bullets.
- Attached is almost hidden in the back of the corgi, shoot comes from corgi mouth.
- Animal Spirit detached align vertically with corgi only if the player don't shoot
- Animal Spirit interacts with Zawarudo and punches hits harder and in a bigger range.
- TODO: make a condition where if a boss is killed by a punch from animal spirit in zawarudo, this explodes in a more cool way.

The idea any type of gameplay is less of a waste of a players time is a giant fucking lie. People will do things that aren't immediately fun in the game to get extra enjoyment later on. Whether that's hours of getting fucking raped in a skill based boss fight or rummaging through trash in fallout 4 is completely irrelevant. Players do it because they want to play the game. Whether they "trick" themselves into thinking its fun (this is the argument "I beat a hard boss" achievement fags will use to defend trying to beat a boss for 3 hours) is irrelevant.

You're promising an experience. If your making a post nuclear survival RPG you are actively robbing players of the experience of rummaging through trash to find that extra bit of comfort later on that they think is playing smart. The parts of fallout 4 where you are powerfisting through super mutants with the "HES HACKING HES WACKIN HES SMACKIN" butcher pete song (below), isn't any less important for bringing the player to that world than the atmospheric parts where your rummaging through a ruined schoolhouse looking for pencil lead.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wY4N5NOAsH0

If you find something tedious in a game you probably just aren't the target demographic. Tens of thousands of players play EVE Online daily and many will swear is the greatest game they've ever played because of how committed it is to being another world. Others will say its shit because it involves literally archiving your enemies private forums for player data, information, and espionage.

Though I will say on the subject of making a modern "treasure chest" type of mechanic. There are ways to get the best of both worlds. In a modern world accounts, codes, files, data, and source code are more valuable than a lot of shit. You don't need to have some faggy hacking minigame either. Drop a blackbook in a desk, or leave notes of an NPC's family around the area and leave it up to the player to try and steal the person's accounts and personal information to get that dank money. You could also just copy mass effect, kotor, etc and have chests.

at what point can you be in prototyping and say "okay this mechanic isn't fun, time to go start a different project"?

Still TODO:
-Tweak the mass and force settings until it feels a bit better and more of a struggle.
-Make checks for when the players hands are too far to be effectively pushing, and auto reset them, or stop the amount of force they emit.
-Make some camera controls that aren't garbage.

Then, just gotta make a few textures, and I can try my hand at giving character modeling and sculpting a real go at it.

I'm still stuck on this question 8 months later
Let me know if you find out
>>
If I put up a game onto Steam, is it possible to remain anonymous with a pen name?

I've produced disgusting fetish driven RPG Maker and HTML story games under a pen name, which have been well received by the people who have played them.

So I'm finally working on a "real game," one that I want to end up selling on Steam (not RPG Maker or Twine, I assure you), and I've been wanting to keep it vanilla for the sake of my public reputation, but I can't help but still want to do weird shit with it and I don't people to know that I'm a perverted deviant.
>>
>>168770096
The first one's needed because you're using transform.forward to determine the direction of movement (which is based on your rotation)

What happens if you take the second one out?
What happens if you take
>>
>>168770059
getting others to play helps
but a good question is can you just fuck around in your prototype and have fun? Is it nice to use the mechanics you've got?
>>
>>168770059
If the game isn't at least a little bit fun without juice, then it likely wont be fun with juice.
But it is hard to tell whether it will be good after tweaking it some more, or changing mechanics. So you'll have to decide if you want to keep changing it, or if you want to make something else.
>>
>>168770294
Anonymous to whom
>>
>>168770367
Let's say my real name is "Real McRealton" and I submit the game to Steam under the username "TheFakeNameGuy."

The name you give valve has to match whats on the bank account, so if you REALLY wanted to you could open a business checking account as German Goo Games

But Valve also lets you put in a developer/publisher name, I dont think you have to put your real name anywhere the public can see it

Ask googem though
>>
>>168770502
You know selling a game is a big boy adult thing to do and that people involved in big boy adult things typically want your real name, right? Especially when the government is involved?
>>
>>168770314
>>168770507
what...?
you(s) must be missing from what I explained in the last thread

its all relative to a camera's rotation which follows the player. just using arctan to get rotation from the input like in that video would only work in world space.
>>
>>168770334
>but a good question is can you just fuck around in your prototype and have fun? Is it nice to use the mechanics you've got?

my issue with this is that if you're happy with it, you might not be sure if it's because "hey I got this to work", or if because it's genuinely enjoyable.
>>
>>168770294
I believe it's possible to keep your name private from everyone except Steam who of course needs a real identity for tax purposes and sending you the $.
>>
>>168770502
for normies, hard unless someone takes an interest in finding out who you are. It's not impossible to find out who you are, but as long as you don't attract attention by being a retard/bragging about how you're anonymous/whatever you should be fine
obviously steam etc will have to know
>>

I can't really remember if its entirely appropriate, but if I'm planning to make a lewd game but I'm, well, more of a writer then a coder or an artist...

I've considered using RPGMaker, since it's going to have battles and all, but I always hear a lot of mixed things about it, and my lack of coding knowledge seems to really hamper my attempts.

I know of a few text VN-engines that can - in theory - handle combat, but Twine seems like that's a real clusterfuck, and Ren'py seems more flexible, but the fact its completely lacking any kind of UI and is direct coding makes it... awkward to use.

Are those really my best three options though?
Sorry if this isn't really the place to ask.

first way would be to search the name, since retards usually use the same name everywhere
trawling through the dev's posts to find any tidbits and using those in your search would work too. Especially if the dev has told their usual friends/follows who proceed to shit up the comments with references to his old work/in jokes, etc
if the dev has a unique/noticeable style, and the work is in the same genre you could stumble upon it accidentally and realise it's the same guy
plus the moment anyone finds out it's the same guy it's going to be spammed everywhere since people love that shit, so it won't stay a secret for long

For what it's worth, I believe the code is as efficient as it can be. If you are worried about it running so often you could stick it all in a coroutine and only run it ten times a second or something.

I want to make a morrowind style open world game in UE4, is this possible?
>>
>>168772089
yeah, I'm not too worried about it being efficient its just some of the internal workings of the functions confuse me.

basically I have a static camera a la prerendered era final fantasy games, but it rotates to follow the player as it moves around. so when the camera is rotated to the left, I needed to update the input so that pressing the up arrow still moved the character up on the screen rather than "up" in world space (which would be right if the camera is turned left)

so now basically if you hold down the right arrow the character makes a circular motion around the camera

that lines that I wrote to link the camera rotation to the player's movement is what confuses me, because any sort of edit that I do breaks it

I think its because i'm reusing the same variable (velocity) when I should probably have two, but it works for now and I'm satisfied with that

making a low poly crab. It's only 4 legs because doing the full 8 would be a nightmare animating, and it's just a cute companion in a fantasy world anyway
The leg joints are super simple to save polys, but I figure it won't be a big deal because it'll be tiny on screen and there's enough loops there to keep the meat of the leg intact while moving.

Is there a rule of thumb for what I should do with the "include" feature on Game Maker (2)? I feel like I should embed all the assets... but if that were actually necessary then the IDE would be more conducive for that. When I press "insert included file" I'm expected to look through Windows explorer for the file... as opposed to stuff already imported into the game maker project, like sprites and scripts. I'm just not clear about exactly what a built .exe does or doesn't contain by default.

Man, trying to write for my game as a non-english speaker is fucking hell.

Starting phrase :
>Having went off the beaten path to cover more distance, the party eventually comes across what appears to be a small village in the midst of a festival.

Up-next phrase that needs changing
>Its dwellers seem to be joyously celebrating, they put good food on display for all to take and dance near the fire, young and old alike.

Or
>Its dwellers seem to be joyously celebrating by putting up good food on display for all to take and dancing near the fire, young and old alike.

Replace the first comma with a semicolon. That's how you attach two complete sentences while also telling the reader to take them in "consecutively", if that makes sense.

no, you'd have to do it every time something got in the way, and you have to run it for each unit
The pathfinder returns a list of positions for that specific object at that time. If something gets in the way then the path is useless and you have to regenerate it. You can use tricks like only regenerating part of it, making the unit wait until it can keep moving, etc, to save the relatively expensive cost of running the algorithm.

Started getting into animation, yesterday people told me to use circular interpolation, but it makes it look very robotic to me. Is there something I should do, like doubling the keyframes, or is this how animation is supposed to look like I just stared at bezier interpolation for too long?
>>
>>168786471
Not it wouldn't, because you would have to watch through hours of boring game play to get 10 minutes of cinematics. At that point you can just watch some faggot youtuber play it

Sometimes I watch game playthroughs on youtube. Started with saints row since I find the game boring but like the humor and style of the story. Seems way more expedient than anything a developer can cook up.

In blender, if I've got a model with a mirror modifier and an armature, is it possible to mirror the whole thing including the weight painting? I've been looking it up but in classic blender fashion there's a thousand different ways of doing it and all of them outdated
>>
>>168787272
>mirror weight painting
Don't think that it's possible. Or I haven't found a solution for this.

Basically the process would need to both copy the current vertex group, flip them and flip the name all in one go. Considering that they are 3 different actions I don't think there's an automate way of doing it, unless you write your own specific python script for it.
>>
>>168787272
if the armature is symmetric and the bones have proper .L and .R suffixes then it should mirror automatically
>>
>>168787272
If you duplicated flipped, flipped the bone names, then joined your mesh would it work?

How could I make particle effects on the trail like pic related?

Would I have to create ~50 particles, or is there a more efficient way of doing this?

How would I make that faint gold line in the middle of the trail?

I'm using libgdx and java if that helps

I am useless at graphics and animation, I'd rather program it if possible.

Started work on the healthbars again. Currently trying to work out where everything should go. The concentration and dodge stats are just stuck at the top because I can't think of a better position. It's really cluttered but it's all info you need in combat. Any advice?

The last time I was asking aggydaggy about this was in December, and then midway through I got distracted by updating the entire graphics engine and then creating the pictured "happy forest" tileset from scratch. I took the advice of the anon that suggested making the healthbars part of the GUI rather than a 3D object floating over the character's heads, it was a bitch to implement but anon was right in the end, so thanks to whoever that was!

I think my justification for having it that way was that max health gets reduced after combat to whatever the lowest HP you had in combat was, basically to make healing weaker (otherwise the best strat would be to kite the last enemy around while healing in every battle). It does look shitty though, and it's probably not worth cluttering the UI up for.

>Either way, have the numbers centred in the bar, not at the right hand side.

False dichotomy there, you are implying that the idea guys are actually better at design and themes because they lack other skills.

Reality is that when you put your ideas into the game it always looks like shit, you need to implement, polish, and iterate until the game gets decent.

Idea guy ideas sound decent sometimes, but you can never implement what's in your mind 100% and even if you can, it's never as fun/nice as it is in your mind.

P R O G R E S S

The game is now pretty much functional. (!)

Starting/selection screen, (logical) level progression, functional buttons, player lives and failstate. It's all rather crude at the moment, but it works. (When recording the Webm I noticed that the tank selection doesn't always work, gotta figure out why.)

Currently no sound effects whatsoever, I'd like to have basic sounds down before I release a demo. Anyone interested in helping?

There is still a whole lot to do:
>Fix memory leaks
>Add scoring system
>Proper main menu
>Any kind of settings
>Gamepad support
>SOUNDS / MUSIC
>Level editing
>Selectable perks / countermeasures / ammo types
And so on.

But I haven't been this close to having a playable game in years. Gotta try running the game on my other PC, runs fine on my shit-tier laptop but there are some visual problems on my desktop due to using surfaces (which this game realies heavily on).

Let's play a game, /agdg/!

Steam puts out an announcement:
From now on, they ask every developer to prove that each software and asset which was used to create the game was owned in a legal way. If this can not be proven, then the game won't get on Steam.

you can transform sprites pretty easily in a lot of engines and afaik a lot of games that had "realistic" shadows did that back in the day with mode 7 or whatever

but if you're making a meme pixel game where each "pixel" is actually about an inch wide, you'll get mixels with that method

Dude.

Easy trail, have a sprite copy of your weapon that fades away over 3 frames, and make an object with that sprite that deletes itself after animation end, spawn that object under your weapon with a timer every 2 frames.

Boom, weapon trail.

There are dozens of other ways too, that's just the laziest.

You're asking how long it would take to become a professional skill level in mulltiple fields that require seperate skillsets and years of practice.

If you really wanted to know you would be on google searching for college course summaries and researching how long other professionals have studied their respective field.

I say RESPECTIVE field, because nearly nobody masters it all, everyone has a single field of study they excel in, and maybe a few other things they are great at too.

Jack of all trades is rare in real life, set your goals lower or you'll never reach them.

Think about it: some spend their entire life only on ONE of those disciplines, and still only manages to be mediocre at best.

professional = someone expected to behave professionally (that means, responsible and can deliver what is promissed in the deadline) and also of what is expected in the industry among it's other professionals.

being paid while doing substandart amateur work doesn't make you a professional.

being paid while being of amateur quality means you're a paid amateur, not a professional.

by example:

googum is an amateur developer that gets paid.
The guy that made Super meat boys are professionals.

things that make you a professional are: having "professional" qualifications for your industry (no such thing in gamedev), owning/operating/working for a registered business of the industry.

Needs more shading in the upper part. Near the waist it looks almost completely flat. The legs also look pretty flat but it's more okay there since they're so narrow.

well it isnt, its off-white to brown. maybe you'll go with the fabric color if it's dark. but it's also ridiculously simple to dye. to think that linen producers in those times didnt dye their linens en masse is just dumb because literally no one is going to buy white pants. balls out swinging looks better than white pants.

>>
Don't forget to subscribe to gogem's youtube channel where he steals agdg progress posts and stuffs them in his videos without asking permission. He happily bragged to us that he's releasing another on the 23rd and it will be "chock full of progress webms that I did not ask permission for or cite as sources". You may or may not want to file a copyright claim on his video if it contains your game without permission. Or just give it a good old fashioned thumbs down. Totally up to you I am not advocating anything.

If this is supposed to be a right-facing sprite, or even 45 degree between right- and front-facing, then shading is not enough. You also need to change the shape of the lower body to make it clear that one leg is further back than the other.

It was really common to use old fruits/berries and flowers/grasses to dye cheap clothing.

Even poor people wanted to try and look a bit fancy. Chances are nearly everyone had at least one set of not covered in horse-crap clothes for formal occasions like church, parades, events like festivals, weddings, etc

To be honest I'm not a historian or anything, but I can only assume people would be expected to try and look nice occasionally, and natural dyes can be found for free

I might have misunderstood this but if you're looking for something to edit midis I don't think Audacity's what you want

http://wiki.audacityteam.org/wiki/Midi
> Audio files recorded or rendered from MIDI no longer contain the notation information that the MIDI had. They become essentially a recording of those notes being played at one given time.

Today I learned it can convert midi to audio though

While you can't really see it here, I've added an adjustment to the way jumping is handled. Because jumping and double jumping are the same button, I made it so the player won't double jump, and instead it will queue up a normal ground jump if they are closed enough to the ground. Then when they touch the ground a split second later, they start the jump. The biggest reason the player doesn't want to accidentally double jump is because the double jump slams the skateboard to the ground, because the bunny hopped off of it in mid air.

After the poll got posted I kind of want to make a construction game.

What do you consider a 'good' construction game?

I feel like I would want to make it like you own a construction company, bid on job offerings. Then the job site is a series of minigames to clear the plot, survey the land, dig the foundation, set posts, pour concrete etc.

I've realized I'm pretty bad at making 3D landscapes/city levels. I tend to make things very flat and a looking pretty boring.

So I was wonder if anyone knows of a game or editor or something that lets me easily "sculpt" out my level using some very simple tools and some basic building shapes? Away from all the more complex tools that take a lot of fiddling to get right.
>>
>>168813828
actually, I've created my own point in triangle function before, which returns true or false. However, I'd like to know how far into the shape a point is on a line parallel to the base. It was very easy to do with rectangular FOVs.
>>
This might sound stupid, but Is there a way to make a compact function which applies the same mathematical procedure to a single number, in order to make a cyclical sequence of numbers that goes to a limit and returns to one? Like if I wanted numbers 1-4

f(1) = 2
f(2) = 3
f(3) = 4
f(4) = 1

to make a sequence 1, 2, 3, 4, 1, 2, 3, 4.

Trying to make an elegant procedure to iterate through an animation cycle.

I'm not sure that would work to well since it would get boring quite quick.

Something that could be neat would be to either have like a few things you need to complete like:
>a room that is at least 20x20 tiles
>a fireplace
>a garage the size of 5x5
>a pool

And so on and allow the player to make the construction their own. Sort of Minecraft but with rules. Allow for a bit of creativity but don't make it the only focus on the game. Sort of like Lionhead's The Movies. Where if you want you don't have to be creative and make your own movies, but if you want to you can put in the extra effort and make it your own.

Also, don't skimp on the Tycoon elements. That's what will keep people playing.

- being the weirdo at school, the boy that everyone bullies.
- sometimes being above average intelligence.

- sudden emotional bursts.
- shit you wanna do suddenly like punching people.
- talking alone a lot.

A lot of devs just use the built in ones. They can look decent but they have a bad wrap because retards slap them in without tweaking any settings
Failing that there's a lot of resources for making your own but unity's documentation isn't half as good for shaders as it is for their regular code

Thanks for the replies, but that wasn't quite what I wanted (though I probably didn't make myself clear enough.)

I meant is there a way to make such a series by applying one mathematical operation to each iteration, without using boolean analysis, in the same way {2, 4, 6, 8...} is made by applying +2 to each iteration? My interest is more for mathematical curiosity than for function.

He made himself out to be some sort of "community leader" here years ago, because he made an edgy flash game about a school shooting which got a bit of attention.
Since then, he's been trying to educate everyone. He makes videos about "how to be a gamedev". He always talk about art as if he's Leonardo himself, despite being completely shit at drawing. He keeps shitting out menu simulators and pretending that he's a successful indie dev, despite being over 30 and living with his parents to survive. He used to "educate" everyone about marketing, yet hasn't made money on any of the crap he has tried to sell.
His a dried up shell of a man, and now he just shitposts here every day, reminiscing about some perceived "past glory" which he never actually had.
He is the most insufferable little shit out of all the autismal manchildren here.

Shitposts with 0-3 layers of irony.
Best known games are the one about the Sandy Hook Massacre and Social Interaction Trainer.
The thread remembers him for the former, his GUI borefests about politics, the incredibly bad received Restricted Rock Paper Scissors, eccentric art style, and his YESDEV series on YT. What is usually associated with his name in agdg though is his enormous desire for controversial shitposts.

Requesting help with tick/delta seconds (in UE4).

So I'm trying to factor in frame rate for every single function that applies a force on a pawn. Basically, I'm multiplying the applied force in each of these functions by (Get World Delta Seconds * idealFrameRate) [idealFrameRate currently set to 120 because that's the framerate I had before I implemented this -- I'll factor it out later].

For some reason when I'm down to about 40-50 frames (or below) in the editor it gets seriously jittery and forces seem to apply by huge amounts. Can anyone tell me what might be wrong with this method?

The game is entirely physics based. Pawn is controlled by AddForce and AddTorque.
