Repostin' for the new bread.

What's the comfiest modern 3D map editor for indoor scenes?

I specify "modern" because obviously the answer would be any Doom wad editor otherwise

You left out half the OP. Fuck off.
>>
Aggy, give me a very small scope idea and I'll make it over the weekend.

Not like Snake tier. Closer to Asteroids or Tetris. I've made all 3 of those, tho, so none of them.

Is it normal to produce a map as basically one huge mesh? Think of a map the size of a Thief 2 level... surely it's broken up? If it is, how? Room boundaries? How are you supposed to assign textures from an atlas?
>>
Oh, boy, a new thread already. Let me leave my message here once again.

When was the last time you've taken a good rest, /agdg/? Just casually reading a book, watching a film, playing a board game with your friends? Remember to take care of your mental health. That game doesn't worth it if you burn out or have a mental break down in the process.

Take care! Have some rest on this fine weekend!

how about: shooting them rotates them so you could line them up and clear them out tetris style. they fall upwards or something. the shapes that if you don't clear up, they turn into enemies in the jumbled mess of shapes they were last in
>>
>>168708912
Let me phrase it another way... when you use an editor for an old game like Quake or Half-Life or Thief, you build geometry by performing boolean logic with "brushes". You can assign textures to the resultant n-gons without having to explicitly unwrap anything. Then you press "compile" and it builds a result the game can use, defined in terms of triangles and UV coords and all the rest of it.

What I'm asking is what that output really looks like. Is it one huge mesh? Is it a few dozen meshes split up arbitrarily? Is it one mesh per texture/texture atlas? Does it include a per-triangle texture ID along with the UV coords so the game can use multiple textures/texture atlases in VRAM? I've tried to look this stuff up without much success.

does anyone know why Unity won't let my character get on the damn ground?

>>168708471
any way is ok, basically the idea with huge meshes is to reduce the draw calls I think.

Read on how to optimize art for game engines, but I could be wrong.

if you're using unity look up some information regarding that.

But i think chunks is the standart approach regarding a 3D level.

do you remember GTA 3 or driver 2?

apart from >>168691123 ?

Well, I am concentrating on the combat part right now, but later on (and this will be far off in the future), the game will have a life sim/RPG side to it like Persona 3 or 4.

Your character is suffering from high-blood pressure, and have 1 in-game year left to live, at the end of which, you face the final boss.

I don't know how extensive I can make the life sim part. Maybe it'll end up as just some sort of digital board game on top, where things just happens in menus, or maybe I could make it elaborate enough that you explore a 3d world (unlikely though).

Since the idea is that you're a superhero, you need to live your normal life, but maintain a secret identity. I want it to have a romance sub-plot in the same vein of the Tobey Maguire Spider-Man movies, but I highly doubt I can pull it off.
>>

>>
>>168708471
>>168709708
You definitely want to break up the meshes.

Using huge meshes might reduce draw calls but it also means no LoD and no culling, which will heavily outweigh any performance benefit of fewer calls.
UE4 has a feature called hierarchical LoDs, which allow you to combine meshes into one big one when they are far away, but they become separate when you get closer. That seems like a clever idea.

I'm a programmer more than I'm anything else so if I do go ahead with a hobby 3D game, a lot of the fun for me will be in doing my own renderer.

Also, I have a unique style in mind that would be hard to achieve with typical renderers. I would be using a software rasterizer (already started on that part).

>>
>>168710328
It kind of does. I still need to render large textured meshes in a halfware efficient manner.

>>168710491
Self taught. I'm not writing it in the crazy awesome low-level ways classic software 3D was done. It will basically do brute force zbuffered projection and texture mapped rasterization. I'll be lucky if it even has basic lighting effects by the time I'm done, and it will certainly be very inefficient. I'm not 90s John Carmack, I'm under no illusions here.
>>
>>168711008 (Me)
I inserted the word "zbuffered" in the wrong place here. Just mentioning that in case you think I don't know what zbuffering is, because you seem to be somewhat on the offensive anon. There are plenty of hobby 3D engines out there.

any one got tips on making my own programming language that i can make my own engine in
>>
>>168711008
bro, I joined this year my local college to study software engineering, I'm lucky is software engineering with a focus on computer graphics.

Half my degree is basically math, and I got BTFO just starting to study calculus.

Try to get into a college, it will teach you shit you don't think is usefull but all the math you can learn in college will make you better than most indies, if not all.

If you're american, a programmer degree is not a waste of time, very easy to find a 80k job.

Being self taugh will hurt you in the end.
Also, you will meet chicks in college.

I was like you until I decided to go to college to study CS, plus I could get the drawing and music classes.

1. I don't wanna. More fun to write software 3D, even it it's stupid and slow.
2. Regardless of whether I use hardware or software rast, I still need to decide how to generate/split/store level mesh info.

>>168711354
Thank you for the life advice anon. I do understand that a formal CS education has advantages. In fact, I recently came across a Quora post called something like "Which skills do self-taught programmers commonly lack?". I looked over the answers and ordered a couple of books as a result.

I currently support myself with freelance work writing business logic webapps and I don't really want to juggle that with higher education.

I'm sorry about that.

did you learn good math in your glorified unity degree?
>>
>>168711474
If you're in America you can't just casually go to college to improve your indie gamedev hobby. You'd go $40k into debt to just like make game.

I mean, not that getting a Computer Science degree is a BAD decision - far from it...
>>

>>
>>168711843
>Regardless of whether I use hardware or software rast, I still need to decide how to generate/split/store level mesh info.
If there's no multitexturing the most efficient way is to probably split by texture.
>>
>>168711843
>>168711860
If you're american, you should check what classes do harvard or MIT teaches to their CS people.
then use that information to self study all the classes.

>>
>>168711289
You seem to be conflating your goals here.

Writing your own language is pretty cool.

Writing your own game engine is pretty cool.

Don't try to do both things at once. When it comes time to debug you will have no idea whether the bugs are coming from your engine code or your actual programming language's code generation / standard library / runtime.
>>
>>168712351
so i should focus on making the os first

Think Doom, but while taking it to a whole new level.
These flying fuckers can't really do anything to the ungodly OP snails, so they are wary of them while trying to fend off the player or other threats.
When I'm finished I will be able to easily implement more complex behaviors which could turn it into a pokemon game.

Your art looks pretty good anon, keep it up.
About enemy behaviour, I wouldn't over engineer it, the players only see the output, they don't know if you have an AI system behind the scenes making everything move or if it's just 3 nested ifs.

There's a GDC talk about this a game dev team spent months on a super AI that avoided the player and went offscreen to do shit only to try to ambush from a different side. After they released the game they started reading forums, and the players perception was that the enemy just disappeared and reappeared behind a door.

There's also one about some small game about fighting rockets or something. Players were stumped by the great and difficult AI, but the dev just made it follow the player while respecting turn rate and velocity.

Players are schmucks.

>>168717319
dumb games attract dumb players who are best served by dumb AI.

I can agree on that, but it's not really that complicated. It's more like defining general rules to the game setting.
Like you can hold the snail to defend from the flying enemies. An enemy becomes an ally and it turns out there are no actual enemies, but rather something that feels like real creatures in existing ecosystem.

Don't make it a responsibility of either party. Not that either of the three choices affect performance. If you want to optimize collisions then you have to use more than one phase of checking with techniques like spatial partitioning and using simpler collision volumes first before using the precise ones.

For some reason they usually leave /agdg/ after the release.

According to my knowledge, the leaving is often often caused by some guy who gets super jealous of the dev's success, finds a spot where he can insult him to death, and trolls him out of this place. Example is Aviary Attorney.

In other cases the dev just simply gets silent and never say a word again, like VA-11 HALL-A devs.

They were right. It took you over 1 year to get to 1000. This is not good at all for anyone with living expenses. Pricing it adequately would have given you more sales, which would have boosted you to the front page for quite a while, and this would have acted as a multiplier effect.

Workforce and recruits are resources to be shipped around. Full on totalitarian state or bust.

>I think I saw you are using Godot?
Correct. Using the 2.2 version one has to compile from the git.

>Has it been hard to get where you're at with this game?
It didn't feel especially hard to me. I know that sounds like arrogant bragging, but what I mean is that with the skills and knowledge I have gathered so far, I didn't have a hard time applying those. The current dev time is 6 days / ~40 hours, but those were not like actual working hours with hard focus, but with 4chan open and all that distracting stuff. Effective dev time may be half of that.

>Do you have much gamedev experience?
>How did you learn to do it?
I have no finished game, although I familiarised myself with the engine through a prototype I threw in last demo day. That was really valuable, because I got to know the little kinks and the general workflow.
Before that it was just throwing out ideas, starting new projects, making a menu for them, abandoning them again; the usual nodev cycle. Before I started with Godot I used GameMaker for a bit. The biggest project in that was a world generation akin to Dwarf Fortress' overworld (although of course way less detailed) so I knew how to make different grids interact with each other and generally learn about cellular automata. With that I made a tilemap editor where I implemented chunk-loading and manipulating so GM would stop shitting the bed at 60x60 maps. I feel that these exercises were very beneficial to what I'm doing now.
Overall I also tend to build my gamedev vocabulary in my downtime, meaning watching / reading tutorials, design patterns, pseudo code for algorithms etc. While I haven't used everything I read, I'm glad to have something on the backburner so to say.

Basic button functionality is in, next is main menu / between-mission menus.

The enemies have 4 attack modes: random, direct, lead and bounce.
Direct attacks target the player's current position.
Leading the targets manages to hit the player if they continue to move linearly.
Bouncing bullets from walls can hit a stationary player rather accurately, currently the enemies can calculate 1 bounce but I think I'll add an enemy that can calculate double bounces.

Well you made a game about shooting children for attention and then cried when you received it. I would consider you one of the most deranged. Let's reword it.

Not even the most derange individuals besides yourself would consider you a success.

I think the fact that you have to come to agdg and ask people for (You)s congratulating you on your flop games is enough indication of that. >>168718065

this is what people that think i priced too high based on their GUT dont get.
Whip the Vote has had price cuts through sales, the sales had basically no effect, getting the same frequency of sales as when not on sale (some people even paywhatyouwanted it more expensive when on sale). people interested in a congress simulator aren't waiting for a drop in price since they have so few options in the first place, they buy it as soon as they find it.
i probably could've charged more, $12 is fair for a game that was not going to sell a ton in any case.

I think googum is a motivation for me.

yes, I'm a brown sad piece of shit with 27 year old, going to be 28 in march.

But since july from the last month my life has changed for the better.

I was going to be just like googum in some years, but then my life changed, I decided to seek help from others and stop wasting my limited time.

I started to workout, lost my bellyfat, entered college to study CS, and even lost my virginity to a whore (that still counts, right?).

I am gratefull I fixed my life and I wont end up as googum.

i simply meant that i know (linked to in some way) hundreds of devs and know of (no link) hundreds more and yet in all of those financial success is a super minority where i can only come up with a couple and the one i know (and thus could ask) had no explanation. so its not something you can plan towards effectively so is terrible business was the point.

Maybe someone here has tried this or has better Vector Math intuition.

I have a character pushing a sphere, the character (the diamond shape) casts a ray (the pink line), which hits the sphere and moves and rotates an object to be oriented the same as the surface normal where the ray hits.

I'm trying to add a force at that location and in the direction of the inverse of the normal, plus some extra force in the global 'up' axis (Z in my drawing).

Unity has an AddForceAtPosition and an AddRelativeForce method, the first one applies the force Vector in terms of global coordinates, and the second one applies it in terms of local coordinates. I think I'm trying to combine a global upward force, with a local normal force in the same function and that's whats messing me up.

~~~~~After typing this out this far I know what to do, which is to split what I'm trying to do in one go into it's global and local components. Still, I'm pretty sure messing with the cross or dot product of the direction vectors is where my initial goal lies.
He hasn't actually done anything his entire campaign that could be considered him losing his temper or acting foolishly. All he's done is call shit straight, even when he wasn't running for president you can look at his history of firing people that act stupid and blow deals over personal reasons. He's made it pretty clear that he'd still like to get along with Russia, have open trade with other countries, have allies etc. Doing it as part of some world organization is bullshit though, you should only make trades and deals on a deal to deal basis.
The idea of a world government is fucking retarded and you are right about the fact that the Americans that voted for Trump would rather burn the whole thing down than get reduced to losing our freedom as a people and a nation to the whims of a world government.
Hell as a people we don't even like widespread federal regulation over individual states rights.
Honestly. I was working on a furry porn text game. It was really easy to code and implement, I even had a simple and effective combat system.
The main problem was I was shit at writing porn so I stopped the project.
If you can write well, and you are willing to cover EVERY fetish possible, and willing to take commissioned requests for monsters, scenes, rapes, battles, bad ends (Which is where the player ends up in a situation where they become a game over sex slave, shit like that were their game ends in some sort of overly extreme sex situation) then you can make good reliable income through patreon.
All your game needs is some exploration, combat with win/lose sex scenes, and character transformation
If we don't have prespective then it doesnt make sense and a bit crappy, altough more playable. If the sprites were drawn from top view there wouldn't be a problem. Can you guys think of a solution where we have the sprites from the side, have perspective and have a proper gameplay? Or did I just start shitty from the beginning.
Yes they coach patreons to say very low pressure things like "it's okay if you withdraw your donations at some point don't feel obligated to stay with me forever!" and "I will be okay but if you can help that would be really great". First NPC is meshed, rigged, and I've started animating (with the most important animation!)
This is Subcommander Fiste, the guy who will teach you the moves you need to advance through stages (his former business partner, Mr. Fischer, runs the armory where you access unlocked weapons, and will sell you the moves you don't NEED to advance, like perfect dodges, bullet time, combo+, etc.)
Fiste is designed a bit like Bottles the Mole, in that when you see his red-star flag and you press interact, he will pop out and start talking; accordingly, his actor class will actually be a child of the dialogue-capable object, just with an animated skeleton attached.
I wanted to get that done today too but this took longer than I thought to make; on the other hand, banging out an NPC in a day like this is still pretty good time. Re-rigging Dixie worked well, and the best part is that Fiste is even MORE universalized than Dixie so transforming him into other NPCs will be an even quicker process than transforming Dixie into him.
Astute observers will notice he has Dixie's eyes; this is placeholder, I don't have any male eye shapes drawn yet.
REALLY astute observers will win bonus points for knowing the inspiration for his design.
Maybe play some side scrolling beat-em-ups, to get an idea of what connects and what doesn't in your second scenario.
If the collisions for bullet detection are only on the torso and head of the enemies does it work good enough?
What are you using to display text on the screen and on your tiles? Specifically in monogame. I'm also using monogame 3.5 with VS 2015 but I've just started with it.
Also I'm trying to figure out how to get a sprite from a spritesheet after loading it in. Like
Texture2D spriteSheet = //loading in the texture image
how would I access a 32x32 chunk from spriteSheet?
1. Specifically in my engine I was using two spritebatch.begin calls, one with my camera matrix to draw the game, and one with the screen bounds to draw the UI. You can also use surfaces, which I would do if I were working on the game today.
2. Spritebatch.draw takes in a sourcerect parameter that you can supply to draw only a portion of a texture2d.
3. Use the dev version of Monogame 3.6. It's less fucky with retina displays.
>>
>>168746336
Beat em ups use the second way. It works for those because they are more of a melee combat, but in my game there are many bullets being shot. Your guy constantly moves right.
Do you mean first way of collision? 'If it looks like overlaping it hits'. If you mean that; I have been testing the game like that for a while. I got used to it. But I still feel like it gives it a crappy flash game vibe.
>>
>>168746986
What is the vibe you are looking to get from your game, that will differentiate it from the flash games?
The other way I'm thinking to do collisions is have your bullets store its position in the up-down direction, and tell that to the enemy collider, and if it's within some range then it hits them, else it passes by. (which I think is sort of just the hardcoded version of using collisions so actually it might not change anything, hmm)
me. in the future. only it's not 100% 3d. making 2d sprites out of models, using a shader to make them look like old hand drawn CRPG's.
but I am using a 3d engine, and I may have to actually move the sprites in 3 dimensions for cheaper z-sorting (unreal only lets you sort transparent sprites manually and there's more overhead using transparent sprites, all others are sorted by distance to camera)
>>
>>168747350
Good thinking. and I did try it! I tried laser sight. Didn't help much. And also I put shadow of bullet to indicate actual place of bulllet. (Not shadow but a light) Which made it look like there are two bullets lol!
The scene can become crowded with bullets. I'm guessing I started all wrong from the beginning. The genre and the view style doesn't match I think.
>>168747440
I meant not having perspective made it look very amateurish. Because the angle of drawn sprites didn't match the collisions. It's like paperdolls.
Art guy just started to draw and I didn't think ahead of time. The one solution I can think of is, to juice, add features, make the player so occupied with not trying to get hit, so they won't complain about the weird perspective.
Let that be a lesson to us all. Think before you start a project! We are too deep in this to stop now. We'll publish it the way it is. If it works it works. Bad thing is I can't think of a way to fix it in the second game either, if we even make one.
>>
>>168741875
it's kinda hard answering how much you can build before you notice some lag, but atm without any optimization, about 4000 units of track?
collisions are check the normal way against a simplified collision mesh, I don't think is going to be much of a problem performance wise as collisions are only checked on the server, but I guess we'll see one there are more train flying around.
>>168743995
I was considering having the player control the track for a while, but seeing as you drive the train / carts in a multiplayer setting it didn't make much scene have one player control the track. also since there are different weapons/stats on different trains, I couldn't think of a way to make it look/feel good to control.
the track not spawning ahead of the train looks quite odd right now I know, but I'm gonna try to add some visual fluff to make it look better later down the line.
right now I just want to get a quick and dirty prototype up and running to test tech to see how much of the original idea has to be scoped down.
That looks really nice actually, good job. The only thing I'd add later would be some sort of way to filter shit in your inventory.
The programming way to do it (or at least modern UI way) would be to have like filters based on equipment type/typing whatever. Which would be like SkyUI skyrim style sorting.
Honestly a way I always though was cool and more fitting for a game trying to be somewhat realistic (as most traditional roguelikes try and do) would be to have certain equipment pieces give bag slots and then have some sort of tiled or tabbed window inventory management based on the bags.
>backpack
>belt-pouch
>Bandolier
>Having a feat called "packrat" that gives you an extra slot for every piece of equitable armor/clothing on its own tab as a separate 'bag'
I made a lot of gameplay assumptions by that webm, sorry, just throwing feedback out there.
WHY THE FUCK IS THERE A LOCK ON IN A FIRST PERSON GAME
>>
>>168751120
Aye no problem man. Your choice is probably the right choice for fun/player retention/profit and arguably a better game. I definitely tend to have ideas/design preference that isn't the most popular in the room.
Like in regards to that specific case its like. Yeah you can definitely do that and make management easier and more controllable. You can make it faster with immediate results. Both methods provide space for the player to store stuff, one is just objectively faster and cleaner.
The part of me that wants to make games thinks its just exploitable design space for more autism and immersion.
Exploring dungeons I'd think
>carry a cart/wagon filled with chests or use some sort of levitating cart or whatever
>set it up at the start of the dungeon
>cast alarm/camouflage/protection spells on that area
>make repeated trips into the dungeon gradually carrying shit back
switch out your armor/gear based on parts that come up in the dungeon. If you have to cross an underground river you should head back and drop off your medium or heavy armor that could drown you if you fall in the water and wear leather and shit. You can also drop your bags for more movement/speed mid fight. Bags and shit could also get damaged in fights.
Then again most people look and say
>ideaguying
>taking away from the fun parts of your game like combat/story to have more autism
>lol none of that sounds fun
I generally believe people (especially in rpgs) have been complaining about "unfun" things causing them to be removed and then realising when they do the game isn't as enchanting, there isn't as much to do, and its generally not as fun to play even though its mechanically a more fair, balanced, and better designed game on paper.
bad designs and unfun gameplay sometimes actually make a game more fun and add to its charm/player investment/enjoyment.
That's definitely fair. One of my biggest inspirations is something like Elona which definitely isn't super user friendly. Like you said, devs should probably give more credit to the player, especially for rpgs or rogue-likes. The main thing I love about R's is how open the design space is but currently I'm spending hours just getting basic shit in. I'm definitely putting your suggestions on my ideas/brainstorm list though. It never hurts to have more things to pull from later on.
wizards & witches are the IN thing right now
when doing hand painted stuff I try to make the details really large. I would blow up that bat pin to at least 1.5 the size, things that are too small just become noise otherwise
The original plan was a swordfighting game about three witches using silly things as weapons. A French witch (her) using a big needle as a rapier, a German witch using a broom like a longsword, and an English witch using something I haven't decided on yet as a sidesword.
I actually have a question about this. Let's say I release a game with my own name, no LLC. And some obscure patent troll contacts me claiming I've broken their patent, or some other bullshit.
Can I just say "oops, sorry, I didn't know it existed, I'll delete my game". And then delete my game forever? The thing is I don't plan on releasing any big time games, so I'm not against them being taken down, I'd rather just not deal with any legal bullshit like that.
I am a beginning programmer so forgive me if this is stupid.
In Unity I have objects strewn around that are tagged as collectibles.
In my player character I have a script that makes these collectibles get destroyed when I touch them.
http://pastebin.com/FbFMfEU1
However this script just destroys anything that has a tag. Does it have something to do with layers?
Can a game be successful and fun simply due to juiciness?
The main mechanic/gameplay is pretty juicy, and everything else in the game is made to exploit that juiciness and make it even better
However the actual gameplay is mediocre
After 2 days I realized I was never initializing the health correctly, so all of them had the lowest health, and not the health I set for them to have.
