Posted in last thread but then this one got made...

Want to make some simple games this year. Only interested in programming. Friend helping with art/music. Should I just start making simple games with just c++? Like text adventures? Or should I use SDL or SFML from the start? Is it best just to start with something like gamemaker?

Which game is it?
>>
>>167232242
It depends. In an engine like GM you can focus on the game itself, while with a custom made engine (so your own) you have to set up loaders, rendering and many other things.

If you have an artbro, skip text adventures and jump right in to SDL2 or SFML, maybe pick up OpenGL on the way.

You don't unless you have a spare couple hundred thousand dollars just laying around.

If you want to make multiplayer games, focus on trying to make something simple, like a Bomberman clone first.

>>167232846
You're right.

A goal for today will be to have a finished model I can start rigging, even if it ends up looking like a bad Clank rip-off.

My biggest hurdle is definitely going to be programming the platforming physics just how I want them, full of momentum and fluidity like in Super Mario 64.

Did you know? A 750-post AGDG thread lasts on average 18 hours, 15 minutes and 27 seconds.
>>
>>167233392
hey neat, are you doing some agdg scraping/analytics? I started such a project a long time ago but gave up.
>>
>>167232816
I liked SDL2, but I have to admit that the official wiki is kinda dead. SFML seem to be more up to date, and as I've heard it's easier to use OpenGL with that, but I don't have any actual experience with it. Most engine devs here use SDL2, so you have a better chance getting help with that.

At this very moment I use GLFW. It's "only" a window and input library, but for some reason I find it easier to use than SDL.
>>

>>167233464
I downloaded recent threads and wrote a script that iterates over them to learn python. It's not very automatic
>>
>>167233702
Well sounds fun. I was using R so my code probably wouldn't be helpful. It was pretty automated but I got worn out when I started a system of tagging "progress / informative / shitpost" but couldn't figure a way to easily tag and manually grabbing the post numbers was tedious. I wanted to see if I could generate AGDG posts. Punching above my weight in pretty much all regards, since my stats and programming are both pretty weak.

I hope you keep it up!

I think rewarding yourself is the key to success.
If you reward yourself with 2 bigmcs after a run instead of just eating 2 bigmcs randomly, you will always go for the run and eventually feel terrible if you eat one without doing your exercise first.
Obviously this approach also works for gamedeving

Naw man, don't go jogging if you're overweight, especially if you're REALLY overweight. You'll jsut hurt your knees.

Use an exercise bike instead and change your eating habits. That's the only real way for you to lose weight is a lifestyle change like this. It's not fun or easy but it's necessary if you want to be respected again. Just like gamedev.

So let's say I have a big ds_grid of tiles in GameMaker, each tile must hold a potentially infinite amount of variables that can be changed at will.

When you live an active life, it is completely understandable to be tired every once in a while.
Human flesh is weak, but that doesn't mean you can let yourself go!
You don't want to disappoint other anons, your family, friends, relatives and SO, do you, anon?
>>
>>167238419
Two ways to go about it:
1. Use instances. You can assign them variables on the fly and they persist, but this has the disadvantage of an instance holding alot of extra variables you may not need after a point.
2. Use a ds_map per tile. This allows you to manage memory more efficiently, but since checking them involves iterative string comparisons they can be slow as fuck if they have a ton of key/value pairs.

In general though, if you design something with "potentially infinite" anything you need to rethink it.

Some basic collectathon movement staples: climbing poles and swimming.

Poles follow SM64 rules; climb up with forward, slide down with back (and you rotate around while you do), left and right rotate you CCW/CW around the pole, jump the direction your back is facing.

Swimming follows Banjo Kazooie/Mystical Ninja Starring Goemon rules; when you swim, you automatically remain at the surface, until you push the dive button to submerge and gain full 3D movement. In the interests of not making the game awful to control, actual submerged movement will follow Descent rules; you move laterally on a plane determined by your camera orientation (no steer-with-stick and mash jump to move type shit).

Well, use different textures then. Your game looks fun anyway.

New body is coming along well, the slight bumpy look is just the low resolution of the sculpt, obviously the hands are missing because they are a bitch to sculpt.

And it's nowhere near finished and doesn't include clothing or any props the character is going to have.

You have to do the same for every character.

And the environment + props.

And you have to make the actual game.

SCOPE
>>
>>167247506
You can probably recycle most of the body for every female character in the game, though. Just switch up the face and hair mesh a bit, maybe scale some proportions.
>>
do the smoothing groups you apply to a model have any effect on the texturing process? i remember reading about how flat shaded faces can render pixels differently or something

Clothes and scaling should be enough.

I can go read up on the individual bits but how does all of this come together:
-body meshes with sliders for character creation
-separated into parts so you can hide them when putting on armor
-making the armor work with the body scaling

For you guys who use Unity, I noticed it has quite a lot of texturing functionality. I'm also working with Blender and wondering if I should use Blender to apply regular diffuse maps only, and everything else in Unity. Or is it better to finalize my character textures completely in Blender before importing the model to Unity?

Since it's a mech, adding a small vertical screen shake and a slight delay before you can start moving again after a drop will make the suit feel more weighty, also won't disorient the player because the delay and screen shake occurs simultaneously. Think of the freeze-frame that happens when Link's sword hits enemies in recent Zelda games. Same effect.

Besides that though, can something like this be done in Unity? A physics based, or at least partially physics based animation system?
>>
>>167260395
Well on the one hand, Unity has such a ridiculous number of tutorials, assets and question forums that artists can almost certainly find a solution to any of their coding problems.
UE4 isn't as good in that regard, you might have to be a bit more independent, but in my opinion that's the one thing Unity has over it.

UE4 has blueprints, which as much as AGDG likes to meme are really just programming, and artists who can't program aren't automatically just going to make video games with them.
All of UE4's superior tools for every aspect mean it'll look better, be easier to make look better and be more enjoyable in the process.

Aww, thanks anon.

Just for that, have some more progress: grind rails and ground pounds

Grinding is self-explanatory and literally identical to Mayhem League's grind.

Ground pounding is a bit more interesting; if you tap crouch in midair, you do the frontflip attack that spikes enemies down toward the ground. It's only by holding crouch THROUGH that animation that you actually engage the downward launch of yourself and the subsequent impact.

I'm rapidly approaching feature-completeness for Dixie's core moveset.
Still to do: sliding down too-steep slopes, (maybe) swinging from horizontal bars, reimplementing 2D zones

Still got a fuckton of stuff to do but the campaign framework is more or less there. Just need to link and script dialog around that so the game doesn't give out a lot of dead air.

Probably going to be bumping up HD cockpits sooner or later. Sick of having awesome interior shots ruined by shoddy looking cockpits.

Also added more parameters for the AI so that scripting varying AI difficulties can easily be tweaked by changing a few values in the spawners. Makes for interesting engagements.

That's something along the lines of what I was thinking for the not-so-dumb method. But mine is less involved.

Simply keep track of the number of free tiles (N). Pick a number from 0 to N-1. Go through your map in some order (e.g. left to right, top to bottom) until N free tiles have been passed, then place the unit.

I attempted to make turn around, jump, and fall sprites, so now the character shouldn't be floating initially. I also made some minor edits to the run and idle sprites. Probably work on all the basic movement sprites before I work on attack frames.

The movement speed when turning (on the ground) was slightly modified so turning around in place looked less weird visually, and I had to modify some of the movement variables because movement in general felt 2fast with the resolution change.

My usage/understanding is in the definition of the word. Just because dictionary.com says the primary usage of a word is X doesn't mean that's the most popular usage.

Also, as my [ersonal experience comes from being in the industry I do feel it's more relevant if you haven't been in the industry, working around people who'd definitely be called professionals.

Heck, I'm one myself. I don't consider myself a professional yet because I haven't pushed out a title on my own that I feel competes with my peers, even though I've helped put out titles that have competed, and beaten, bigish studios in the genre I worked in.

I'm sorry but your wrong. I don't care what they say in the industry, but that's not what the word "amateur" primarily means.
>>
>>167266768
3D takes longer to create than 2D. But once a model is done it can be used from any angle or with any lighting.
2D is faster to create, but if you want different angles or lighting you'll usually have to redraw or recolor the sprite.
>>
>>167266787
Ask the word 'literally' what its primary usage vs popular usage is if you'd like a painting of how little people care about how 'wrong' they are. If a usage is popular enough, it will supercede the original intent of the word and become the de facto primary usage.

In any case I'm not arguing over what the primary usage is. I'm arguing that nobody I've spoken to uses that primary usage - they're all using that third definition.

3D

3D decouples the object from its animations; once an object is made, it can be animated easily, and the object can be changed without redoing animations.

If you want to put a logo on a character's T-shirt, with sprite-based art you have to redo every single frame of animation. With 3D it's just a change to the texture.

Literally is an interesting case where the meaning changed because of sarcasm; "I'm gonna kill him" went from hyperbolic exclamation to empty idiom, and adding "literally" helps transform it back into a hyperbolic exclamation. "I'm gonna kill him. No, I am literally going to murder that son of a bitch"

"Literally" is used to make obviously-figurative expressions seem more serious and help rewind the euphemism treadmill, even if the expressions remain figurative.

Nobody who uses "literally" in a figurative sense is CONFUSED about the meaning of the word. They KNOW what it means, and that's the point. No different from saying "I'm going to kill him. That isn't sarcasm, I mean it." It's just exaggeration.

Everything has both a manual entry and an API entry. Between those, you should be able to figure out what anything does. If you have no idea how games work behind-the-scenes, maybe invest in some general (engine-agnostic) resources. Other than that, just start trying to do things, and if something really basic seems like you can only do it in a convoluted way, you're probably not using the engine as intended. I ran into those sorts of issues a couple of times starting out because I had never used an entity-component system for anything before.

For a small number of both where everything is contiguous, I'd say so. In terms of algorithmic complexity, it isn't - n^2 as opposed to maintaining a set of added vertices and not adding the vertex if it already appears in the set which would be n log n.

Not him, but let's not pretend our memories are with us forever. There's no such thing as 'ascension'. Your brain just stops working when you die, and you lose all your memories and experiences with it, because they're physically-based. You don't get to keep them when you get to heaven because there is no heaven. So shitting on exercise and nutrition is fine, but then turning around and discussing equally-pointless shit like 'ascension' or philosophy is just hypocritical.

It's all pointless in the end. The only thing that really matters is posting progress in /agdg/ until you finish your game.

the art doesn't really bother me

main thing I really love is the colonial pressure economy, really elegant way to manage things indirectly, and keeps you from just colonizing everything you see, truly inspirational, I've been wanting to try and do a 4x myself

the things I don't like is, well basically everything else to be honest, I feel like the ship designer is overly indepth, and only detracts from the strategy aspect, like molyneux said "two games in one". You can just hit autogenerate I guess, but because long diagonal stacks are really powerful it can really change things.

similarly, the card diplomacy, interesting way of determining how you can interact with other empires, but having this whole third game, card game sitting on an entirely different screen that you have to regularly switch over to and monitor, just kinda annoying

but the good bits far outweigh any negatives

If you liked those parts a lot, I'd recommend you check out Ceaser IV to see if you like it. It's what inspired (or rather the Villa structure iirc) SR2's economy system.

SR1's econ was built off of considerations on Space Empires IV (as was the ship designer). SR2 was just our attempt to make designing ships a little more 'building various practical designs' and less 'here are your parts - learn how to build good ships that don't kill themselves'.

I've been reworking the shortcut structure in the game. Trying to make it more intuitive. Now, a shortcut generally intersects the primary path you go through, so if you just go the way you're used to you'll see the shortcut open and use it. I was having a problem of people getting lost and not knowing where to go, this should alleviate that problem a lot. While still retaining discoverability and the need to understand how things fit together.

I only dev on weekends, is that enough?
>>
>>167292661
How long do you dev on weekends? Anything under a couple of hours is probably not going to get you anywhere.
>>
>>167292661
lol no though if you can dev for 16 hours straight both days you should come close

Need to host own server
Shitty text chat
No infinite history
Looks worse
Can't have it on any os/browser/phone combination

I hate the botnet too, but every other product is inferior, including Slack which is actually the closest one.

Since the new semester started, I'm in the same boat anon.

If you are focused and keep your scope reasonable, I don't see why you couldn't make meaningful progress towards your goals as a weekend warrior.

IRC:
>Hang on, lemme post an example.
>OK, over to my browser...
>On to imgur.com...
>OK, where'd I put my saved screenshot... ah, there it is. Upload my file. ... OK, it's uploaded.
>Grab the link and paste it into the IRC.
>Oh, the discussion has already moved on.

Discord:
>Hang on, lemme post an example.
>Snip-tool drag and drop
>Ctrl+V in chat, hit enter.
>Image uploads, is displayed immediately.

IRC was not built to solve the same problem Discord was.

Oh, don't get me wrong, these theads are also complete shit. The format conditions posters a bit more for the better, but we still get a million shitposters.
There's a reason why most successful devs leave AGDG, it's a waste of time unless you're an absolute beginner or shilling.
>>
>>167293519
Are you talking about the pre-pounce sprite that the npc on the right stays stuck in?

It looks fine. It's more how a bear might stand up to appear bigger though, a cat would do the on all fours with an arched back, tail straight up type thing if you wanted to change it.

aggy daggy is for idle chat and having something to alt tab to while devving. It's not exactly a community to rely on for massive amounts of help, just maybe answer a specific question and to have a noncommital place to show progress.
>>
>>167293824
Unlike the Discord which is like this thread except with 95% less thread-shitting. Also I thought most devs leave because of anons getting jealous and harassing/trolling them constantly.

I find that hard to believe since 95% of discord users start drama and thread-shitting here.
>>
>>167294167
1: You have absolutely zero proof of that.
2: Your post. It wouldn't exist on Discord.
3: You haven't been on Discord so how would you even know.

I'm looking at both, and in none of them in the past hours have I found any information that was actually valuable to me. At best I see come cool screenshots/videos from other devs.

How about instead of shitposting about who is shitposting or not shitposting you stop shitposting and start making a video game?
>>
>shitposters constantly fucking with the thread
>discord users claim they're shitpost-free
Riddle me this: if the shitposters aren't from the Discord and looking to make the thread look bad in comparison or, less cynically, reserving their shitposting for the thread since they can't just stop shitposting altogether, why don't the shitposters attack the Discord as well? Surely the comparatively pristine Discord would be a juicy target.

Because they'd get banned. And being banned is no fun.

Unlike 4chan where they can just rotate IPs and come back on, they have to go make an account, set up blah blah, and so forth.

Don't believe the Discord is drama-free? Join the Discord. Look at it yourself. You don't need to take anyone's word -- you can just go and see yourself.
