The Japanese under the agdg logo is wrong. It should be ただゲームを作るのが好き, not ただのゲームを作るが好き

ただ (just) isn't a noun or a verb. There is no reason for the particle の to go after it. の belongs after 作る because 作る (to make) is the action you are doing, and to make that the subject you have to treat it like a noun by putting の after it.

Fuck google translate.

Haven't devved in a while, but I really want to get back into it. Every time I come up with an idea, I realize there's something preventing me from making it.
What kind of 2D game can I make with minimal AI programming, and a simple, minimalist art style?

That's a nice topic.

How do for strategy / management games? I feel like doing it the 4X way is the only valid option, meaning a tick for enabling disabling, then a pop-up for every new content the player engages.

Not sure what you mean via 4x.
Personally I just like the game being open from the go, and hoover for information on buildings/etc. Then having a separate tutorial where you get a feel of the game, but doesn't necessarily take you all the way thought, instead the UI has a button to show you a few graphs on things like resources chains / units / etc.
Basically, include the "wiki" inside the game so players can consult it when needed, and don't have them in an incredibly slow tutorial that covers it all. A campaing is a somehwat decent way of showing individual things too, but you end up having to produce a lot of content which isn't too exciting.
>>
How to make MMO lol?
>>
>>167295932
>Not sure what you mean via 4x.
Several 4X space games have used the same approach to tutorials lately. You start a normal game, tick or untick "Tutorial" and when you click on a menu you haven't clicked before, a pop-up opens to tell you what you see.

>include the "wiki" inside the game so players can consult it when needed
That's actually not a bad idea. Beats having a browser open on monitor 2. Stronghold did this quite well.

How do I make a timescale variable in game maker?

I can't find any good resources on it

I know the basics (make a global variable that starts at 1 and multiply every time-based thing by it) but I don't know how to tailor around that in terms of alarms and loops that wouldn't work without absolutes and I'm sure there are resources out there that explain the thing as a whole

What's the least boring way for a retard to learn maths from the beginning? Well, not at the very beginning but pretty close to it. For example, I have no idea what functions and I've also forgotten basic stuff like sin/cos/tan. I also struggle with some pre-algebra concepts.

Even though I've finished games despite not knowing that stuff, I feel like my ideas are being limited by this even though Unity helps me avoid a lot of it. I want to get up to a pre-university level, at least.

I was voicing my complaint because I considered offering conversions in my text. Must have lost my mind for a second.
Analog clocks in yuroland are just as retarded, the 12 hour scale is inherently flawed. In the night, we say it's 0:18, but when the sun is shining, it's 12:18. Meaning the clock goes from 0:00-12:59, to then move to 1:00-11:59.
Whoever voted against 0:00-23:59 being a global standard deserves to be shot.

>>
>>167311446
yes, all units regenerate by moving. they have a max HP, and regenerate up to that.

hands have 3hp, and move 2 per turn (therefore regenerate 2 per turn). this sets up a neat system where 2 hands can never kill each other. dps is important, not total damage.

the theory is, when there are more obstacles and units, close combat will prevent you from always moving to the max length.

We had a system that would take in form applications, but the catch was the user can submit one way after it was created, like days or even weeks. So we had to have two different timestamps in the dB: a creation date and a submission date since our clients had a fucking seizure if we didn't.

Now try to query that data when the time frame is on a different timezone then the one the submission was created.

I see. My recommendation is to ditch the collision shape and attach a script to the sword.
In the script you do

func _ready():
add_shape(shape, matrix32) # To find these values, experiment with the collisionshape node
set_shape_as_trigger(0, true)

and you should be fine.

A question: What's the easiest way to remove non-manifold areas and loose/extra faces on a model that's supposed to be watertight?

I've noticed Blender often makes extra faces inside my model when I use tools like extrude, scale or bevel. It might be because I've been using right-click to cancel extrusions and shit but the faces get extended anyway?

Yeah, I do have some experience with Max from about 4 years ago, and I can tell it's slowly coming back to me, just look at that model.

I started working from top and downwards, and I can clearly see a difference in the quality of my work across the model.

I'd say 3D takes more time and work, and 2D takes more raw talent and practice.

Of course it's all depending on what you make, so It's really apples and oranges anyway.

if you don't join it, it won't export as a single object

you can select isolated sub-objects with alt+L in edit mode

weight painting for mechanicals is extremely easy, just select the part you want and give it 100% weight to the corresponding bone all over, no need for anything automatic here

probably you'd have to setup in contextually-appropriate locations, or build a location yourself? Like to use a cage trap, first you'd have to find a high place to drop the cage off of, then you need to lure another monster over to use as bait, then you'd need to lure the actual monster you want to capture. Or maybe make some really crazy traps, like you need to have a virgin sacrifice to open an altar to the netherworld and summon demons to grab the monster for you.

Depends on what your game actually is.

Real talk, I pop in one every month or two, do a little shitposting, catch up on games that seem cool / aren't dead yet, and then fuck off to do whatever.

It's fun, and helps to gauge where everybody else is at. It always yields replies from overly sensitive devs who take these threads way too seriously / expect unfettered and unconditional validation for their hard work, which is silly went put into perspective.

If a dev ever wonders while people shitpost in these threads, just remember that you're an easy target that pumps out interesting and easily digestible content that they have zero reason to react positively to.

Track tracking coming along nicely. It dynamically traces out a spline for the train & carriages to follow.

Still not sure what I'm doing with the 'mission' structure. Train games seem to be all about time constraint and frantic track building, but that isn't very comfy.

Read what you type before you post.
Getting good at one thing doesn't magically make that thing easier. And for the records I know how to make low poly characters and this is why I can tell that you're bullshitting everyone.

If you really think that the workflow to get something good with just a few poly is easy then you're wrong.
If you think that texturing a low-poly model is easy then you're still wrong.
And if you think that rigging a low-poly model correctly to get good deformations despite the low topology is easy then you're even more wrong.

Obviously Red should be used for damage and green for healing, that's pretty common. So in this instance maybe orange/yellow is used for damage but a powerful attack gets red damage numbers because it's more potent.

As for size scaling on number I think that's an interesting thought but might be a bit too distracting. Especially if you get to endgame and everyone's doing big amounts of damage seeing huge numbers for every attack might get old.

Instead you could do a formulaic thing where high amounts of damage (such as from a special attack or critical hit) gets big but based on your level. So at level 1 if you hit someone with 45 damage it gets huge, but at level 80 and you're doing 3000 damage an attack it only gets big if you do some crazy 6000 damage attack.

Another idea is to just boost the size or appearance of critical strike damage numbers. Damage numbers normally just appear and like fly away or go up, but a critical strike like fades in and 'slams' into the game world, making it seem really awesome.

I don't know, just some thoughts.

Designed the stock footsoldier enemy for my game; the "Dixie Goomba", if you will. I call him "Little Skull".

You will knock an absolute shitload of these things around the walls like racquetballs, so I didn't want him to be too busy-looking. He actually sort of looks like a baseball or golf ball, which is fitting.

My current plan is to do like Nier Automata and make all subsequent enemy designs riffs on this fundamental one, with the main skull body repurposed as heads, hands, arms, feet, etc., on larger enemies.

They may also get little costumes on a per-level basis, I haven't really decided how that's gonna work yet.

ironically i wanted to do similiar art to yours. that was going to be the setting of mine, robots left behind on a post human earth modifying themselves over hundreds of years with some trying to escape the limitations humans set on their ability to become aware. i'm pretty bad at 3d modeling currently so im probably not going to bother.

but basically none of it is animation. is uses contracting config joints and torque to move and keep itself upright like toribash. for you your best bet is probably something like puppet maser IK which creates some really great psuedo physics based movement without any of the inherent slugishness the systems i'm doing usually have. i actually don't know anything about animation.

Ideas are important but they don't mean anything if you can't implement them. Most of my ideas are driven 50% by what I think will be fun and 50% what I think will be easy to develop quickly.

Repurposed enemies into larger enemies is an interesting aesthetic, but it also lets me recycle enemy assets as I build bigger enemies by copy-pasting parts together. Also robots are the easiest things in the world to rig and skin because they're 100% rigid.

So there's a part of it that's ideaguying and there's a part of it that's programmer art. It's sort of equal parts of both.

Eh... kinda?

Not really.

I mean, I get how you would draw that connection, but I'm going for something more like Nier: Automata's Machine Lifeforms (pic related)

The larger enemies have five or six heads, and a "torso" that's just a stack of 4 or 5 torsos welded together. It looks like someone is quickly repurposing common materials into a variety of enemies but also makes the actual implementation very copy-pastable.

It makes sense in Nier Automata because of the nature of their creation, therefore you also have to make it make sense within your games context to allow it to no be seen as lazy.

>>167346710
I mean, they're robots. At this point in the writing process, they're mostly designed to gather field samples and quarantine individuals against their will

If you think about any combat robot that exists, 100:1 odds it's going to feature a whole lot of repurposed and recyclable assets because when you design something to take a beating you make it easy to repair and replace. you avoid specialized parts because they're more expensive to procure; the more pieces you can get in bulk, the better off you are.

On the other hand, I could also quote the great Grant Kirkhope, speaking about a weasel in DK64 wearing a welding mask on his forehead that he could never actually fit over his snout:

"Well. It's fucking make-believe, innit?"

This is a game in the tradition of Banjo-Kazooie; if you think too hard about it none of it will make the tiniest bit of sense.
>>

Oh, so that's your concept of fucked up, an edgy story with a regular shooting game.
Just from the videos I can tell how shit that game is, you probably get bored after playing it for 15 minutes.

When you said 4chan fucked up I thought you were referring to child rape and shit.
Your game example seems like something a soccer mom would be upset about.

>>167345182
Yeah, I did have something in mind being in between "fully" physics based movement, and premade animations.

So most of the movement is keyframe animated, but at the same time everything has a sort of "real" physics movement to it

Also that it makes character limbs avoid clipping through scenery and stuff like that.
>>
>>167347142
Glad you took the time to pay lipservice to kirkhope but it really doesn't have much to do with using your fictional universe to explain or excuse design decisions that might otherwise be construed as low-effort and boring.

Get off your back foot, you'll get real criticism when we see how you iterate on your theme.

>>
>>167347556
But they ARE low-effort. I've made my peace with that. Hopefully they turn out to be something interesting, but the most important thing is that they be done quickly and with a minimum of effort.

Mayhem League died because I committed too much effort to detail in asset creation; too many minor tweaks, esoteric functions and small changes that prevented things from being recycled effectively. A big part of my promise to myself with Dixie was that I wouldn't repeat that same mistake, and that I would take conscious steps to make as many things reusable as possible to avoid getting sucked into an inescapable pit of asset creation that one man couldn't possibly hope to claw out of on his own.

no, it was a mock up character design i made in gmod out of simple shapes because i didn't know how to use blender and im a terrible 2d artist. i just wanted to get a basic idea of what i wanted my characters to look like. i forgot anything source here is meme status, my apologies AGDG.

Holy shit, I can't believe I've never heard of this.

MMLclone dev here. I was juggling the idea of having enemies drop parts a'la Monster Hunter and having those generic parts used with special parts found in ruins/shops to make and upgrade equipment. Naturally I would make drop chances high so there would be no grinding - I always thought it was weird that all you took from reaverbots was the refractor shards. Do you think this would be too far of a departure from the series?
