I got basically every other possibility of this gem two times over (as well as many useless bloodtinge scaling gems) before I *finally* found this single gem that I wanted (+31.5% blood with either stamina curse or durability curse). I used up literally 80 bold hunters marks and got 2 million blood echoes solely from sprinting to and killing a shotgun watcher over and over. Was it worth it? Not really, it only makes my evelyn do like 30 more damage than it did with my old gem that I got ages ago.

Funnily enough my friend was watching me run through Old Yharnam last night and we had a conversation about Djura and he brought up this exact point. I don't interact much with zombie media so I hadn't considered it.
Personally I can see both angles. But at the end of the day you have to act in self preservation. I wouldn't attack beasts unless they attacked me, but in that circumstance its kill or be killed. My interpretation of these events after playing the DLC is that the Church hired the Powder Keggers to blow the living shit out of the district that had turned, burning it down and sealing it off to hide the scourge. Djura became especially aware of this and in a moment of self reflection considered he may be no better than a mass murderer. He's so stricken with guilt that he can't perceive his position or the event with clarity and rather than being upset at the church as he rightfully should be, he does the only small and complacent thing he can do while thinking he helps.
You see this a lot in modern politics too, people get angry at those lower down the chain rather than those making the decisions, and justify their positions with pure emotion.

The killing aspect comes out of zeal for the hunt and the expulsion of Vermin, something he would greatly support given his "discovery" of Vermin after devouring a beast. What weapons benefit the most from STR scaling +65 gems? I mean versus just a +27% physical attack gem? I guess if the weapon has a higher base damage, then the STR scaling will make less of a difference compared to a +27% tempering?

I've heard that pushing your stats past 50 makes no difference for weapons scaling, but if you add +65 STR scaling to a weapon that already has an "S" rating in STR, are there diminishing returns? Would it be better to put it in a weapon with a "D" rating?

You can stagger most enemies. With Kirk for example you can just r1 smash against gascan in beastform and you'll stunlock hin until your stamina runs out. Beast cutter is great for cheesing stuff from medium range. Hunters Axe still has the spin to win and high regain. Every build in this game is roughly as strong as the others except that you don't have to farm for offshapes or abyssals on a skl build.

If you have 50 STR and 25 or under SKL it's worth putting one on nearly anything (except maybe Ludwigs Holy Blade, but I'm not sure)

Heavies work wonders on high damage weapons because scaling is a percentage increase. A 100 damage base weapon with 1.00 scaling and 99 STR would do 200 damage, but a 50 damage base weapon with the same scaling would only do 100. This is why the arcane damage on Blades of Mercy is useless. No matter how good the scaling the base is so low you'll never reach meaningful damage.

This is the formula for damage.

{[Base damage + (base damage * STR saturation) * (STR scaling + base damage * SKL saturation * SKL scaling)]* %gem1 * %gem2 * %gem3 * ATK modifier} + flat damage = final attack value before defense.

If a Heavy Abyysal without flat damage gives higher AR than %gems then it's always going to be better. But with flat damage being the only thing making it higher you need to check ATK multipliers and see which ones do worse. If a +65 scaling +15 flat is better by 1-2 AR it's not worth it, because anythibg higher than 1.0x multipler will actually be worse.

It's going to be tough to stay at 98 without making sacrifices leaning towards either physical or arcane, or sacrificing other stats like vitality.
Either 50/25 or 25/50 is viable at that level, but because of the way the weapon works, the first will have stronger physical attacks while the second will have stronger arcane attacks.
25/50 at least lets you use the Wheel, as well as many converted weapons and plenty of hunter tools to boot. I'd go with 25/50 for all that alone.
But if this is for PvE, why stop at 98? You can hit a bit higher if you're worried about co-op and level ranges. Going up to ~120 isn't too bad.

Yeah, 25/50 works for the Tonitrus as well. Early game, a Tonitrus, a Fire Saw Spear, and a Flamesprayer can get you far. You'll get access to good hunter tools later, which are always useful.
