there is no grid, actually. they try to reproduce N times, then die. when they attempt to reproduce, they check to see if there is an open space, if it's open a new one is spawned there. corpses take up space, so setting "decay" to high can reduce the rate that the species expands.

Trying to do some graphics and better obstacle spawning.

I tried to do it like this, I think I did last year too. I can totally see how that works in the real world, but in a game world, particles fly out when you're going fast. I find that it feels unintuitive to have it as a slow down effect.

Hey, how should I be lighting my level.

Pic related is what I have currently. I have one directional light and bunch of point lights which can be seen within screenshot. I want to remove the directional light - since I want this level to be during night time. And I want to illuminate everything I need with point lights - which would essentially embody the colorful billboards, streetlights and lit windows.

Problem is that my level is pretty huge and default point lights only illuminate the most immediate area around themselves. How can I make lights that make walls, buildings and shit and stuff visible and won't just shimmer like mini-suns.

It does, CMD+Q, but it still annoys me as it seems like a forced quit. It's not a necessary thing it's just that most people's first action when trying to quit a game is to press ESC.

Thanks for the keyboard suggestion, I'm thinking about touch screen compatibility but binding it to keys would be no effort at all so I'll do that too.

1MA, the art is not polished yet, it's going to be lowpoly but I will probably replace all those models with similar ones with more detail and better materials.

How is your progress today?

I've made a simple enemy mesh and made animations for hit reaction from various sides. Simple hitbox based attack system is there.

Tricky part will be implementing some sort of navigation system for AI. Since my terrain is runtime generated I can't use default unitys prebaked one. If I won't come up with anything better, a simple system with manualy placed waypoints should work.

Dumpling has not been seen since DDX, if I'm correct, purple rogue dev has not been seen since Spring, Boku retreated to Discord and just occasionally posts here. Only Clarent dev stayed strong. He has fucking balls, just like his main character.

Setting bounciness to a negative number resets it to 0 after you go out of the field
in the webm it's on 0.9 bounciness so theoretically it should be deteriorating, but for some reason bouncy-on-bouncy collisions with velocity generate more velocity.

Woo. Finally have some dynamic particles in my game. Feels nice to not have just statically posed snow on the screen. Also, I'm switching engines from AGS to Visionaire because AGS presently doesn't have useful font scaling at high resolutions -- it just winds up super ugly.

The objects initiate with a force in a random direction. Whenever they're clicked, you get/lose points and the object 'respawns' in a different location with a new force (so clicking on one resets it). It'd be ideal if they maintained that speed always but I can settle for less than that. If you want to be able to see your body and legs in an FPS you have to put the camera a bit in front of the head. You could even model the neck fully and have the camera attached to the face somewhat realistically. You would still probably draw the arms as a viewmodel but you don't have to.

Trickiest part is making sure your clipping planes don't, well, clip part of the player model. This is easy with a separate viewmodel for the arms/weapon but a bit harder with a player model in the environment. You can change the clipping planes of the camera but then you will have to figure out how you want to make the depth test work.

UE4 blueprints noob here.

I want to make a bunch of node thingies.
These nodes would only contain a direction vector, which would point at another node.
For developing purposes, they would have a shape that can show the direction of the vector.

I need those to make some passive AI hovercar traffic. Those hovercars would look up the direction vectors of the closest 3 nodes and take the average of them and move along the resulting vector.

I figure that this would make some nice city traffic.

Maybe I'm misunderstanding but:

Each node could have a variable reference to another node.
Make it public and then you can assign nodes to that variable in the editor.
Your direction vector is (Other node location) - (this node location)

Use an Arrow component to visualise the direction. Set it's rotation with the LookAt node, plugging in the locations of the two respective nodes.
Scale the arrow with the distance between the nodes if you want.

Now, humans will have 3 types of behaviours,
1. just full AI killing zombies and trying not to die
2. following orders by the player, RTS style

How would you handle this last part? make the human monobehaviour into other 3 monobehaviours and switch the active monobehaviour accordingly too?

The DMA controller in the Genesis is fast, but fuck if it's not the most finicky piece of hardware I've ever seen. It freaks out if the data being transferred crosses a 128kb boundary on the ROM. It freaks out if you're transferring data from ROM and the code initializing the DMA wasn't stored in RAM. Sometimes it just drops the upper 2 bytes of the source address if you write the whole address in a single long word, so you have to do two word writes.

It's all stuff you can work around pretty easily, but the documentation only mentions one of those and debugging these was painful.

It's probably because of the FIZZIQS involved having more important emotional or instinctual response than physical. To just sail a boat is trivially easy, and a lot of the fun comes from the mechanical feel of sailing.

Same reason most racing games that are popular default to Automatic transmission, or are ONLY in Auto (future racers, especially). Manual is great for control, but a lot of the fun people report is in actually feeling your clutch slip through your pedal, the satisfying click of the shifter, etc.

A lot of the fun of sailing, at least small boat sailing (rather than whole ships with large crews) is taking in lines by hand and letting them slip slowly to optimize your sail position, shifting your own weight against the boat or even sidejacking, watching the yardarm swing over you, etc.

It's probably very possible to make a good sailing game, but then again, driving games are mostly along the lines of Forza Horizon or F-Zero, and not My Summer Car.

Sailing is pretty expensive where I live, plus there aren't any rivers nearby so I'd have to travel pretty far to do it.

I disagree, the mechanical aspects of sailing can be reduced to very simple controls, probably entirely using the wheel. What really makes it feel good is sound and color. If you can hear the wood bending and see the sky turn grey when a storm hits and waves break against your ship it doesn't matter how fine or realistic your control over the ship is.

sailboats don't have a throttle, they have the length of the line between the deck and the yardarm of your sail**. There's a rudder, but even sailing a power boat, you'd know that where your rudder is pointed is not necessarily where you're going to go. There's a lot of counter-steering involved in properly piloting a small boat.

If you're in a crazy storm, it should be all the more reason to have control over the position of your sail. ">muh gamefeel" and ~Juice~ in general isn't just sights and sounds, it's feedback from systems.

To bring it back to racers, good juice in a racer is the engine noise actually pitching up as you redline. It's an intensely satisfying sound, but it also means stuff, there's relation between it and what's actually happening with your wheels. Tire screeching is similar, it's fun to hear, but it also lets you know what's going on. Neither should exist without the firs thing that is going on to go on. If engine pitch or tire squealing was just a function of sheer speed, it'd be pointless and maybe even annoying.

Well, you don't have to go full simulator, but if it's sail powered and not thruster-powered, you may as well reflect that

if it were me, I'd have normal turning controls, but instead of a traditional throttle like in every other vehicle game, have a control for the maximum angle of the sail. since, y'know, that is kinda the important part of sailing. sails aren't automatic, they don't swivel freely, they still need to be controlled to get any power out of them.

The problem is that, after I have 10 of those bars out, the game slows down like hell. and the profiler says that it's that line that's using 50% of the processing power.

been avoiding this thread out of worry over the future of my project. but now talking seems like a good idea. let's talk.

I have the mechanics and other implementation details worked out down to algorithms in pseudocode. I also have SHIT creativity and can't nearly think of anything less generic than "a world full of objects and NPCs that behave under these mechanics". I need a background and a conflict.

genre is role-playing I guess. the best I've tried is Vampire TM Bloodlines, but even then it's not enough for inspiration. cartoon movies like The Lion King are more inspiring.

The last quarter of the game is having the ability to change horses to escape the castle. You have a dream that lets you know how to escape.

Changing the sliders to outnumber the AI is one clear goal that could be added. I worry about using that as the goal, since some sliders have a clear superior option if your goal is maximum growth (GROW and REACH should always be maxed, for example).

I like the idea of the player aiming to maximize the biodiversity of the entire system. I can measure the percent that each species takes up. The loss state would be if one species is >50% of the biomass. Therefore they want to AVOID the massively OP high growth species.

There are some other systems that I can add to massively increase the possibilty space, with almost no cost:
>mobile individuals (think animals instead of plants
>overcrowding mechanics (like the game of life)
>evolution as the species expands
>immortal individuals
>environmental obstacles
>different growth rates in arid/wet and hot/cold environments
>they actually eat eachother
>directional expansion - seek / avoid high density

fight is done for the most part. just tweaking here and there and spritework left. if you hate screenshake, sorry. its only once during the midpoint when the boss gets angry
need to adjust the scythe bounce you it'll only go in the direction you hit it but thats easy

You just have to load the level (the same way you load a normal level in your game), and when the player finishes the level, you flag it as an ok-level.
And if the player dies (or quit the level), he should have to try again.

My system is quite complex (because my programming puzzle game is a kind of a mod of the original god game), so I had to put a kind of a hook into my playing-to-win and palying-to-lose transitions, to avoid displaying the winning / loosing window and just go back to the level editor (with corresponding winning or losing flag).

How do you even make spell effects and such in 3D? In 2D it's much simpler because every animation is done the same way but in 3D you have all those different techniques for different things, characters are modeled this way props are modeled that way, machines are animated differently than organics.
