How much of a point-and-click game should be written out ahead of time and how much should be written as you go along?

Thanks, looking back at the other video, I actually think mine looks better, I just need the background starfield to fade out when going to galaxy view and it should be a very nice transition.

This is the good basis for my next game that I've had on my mind for a long time now, althugh to be honest I'm not sure if a galaxy map is the best way to do it, but we'll see.
>>
>>162656908
The idea is pretty simple. Split up the world into fluid zones (servers) that overlap so that each entity can be seamlessly transferred between servers (by potentially having it on multiple at once).
>>
>>162656625

That makes sense. I just see people on here like IF YOU AREN'T MAKING PLAYABLE PROGRESS YOU AREN'T MAKING PROGRESS! and I wanted to check if I was crazy for thinking this might be a different situation.
>>
>>162656625
Yeah, all of it. But it also depends. A point 'n' click like Machinarium might be written as you go along, because the story is simple and the rooms don't connect, but something more complex, like your pic, where the whole game is basically one puzzle, you have to figure out everything before the implementation.

Furry will be popular because it combines two of the most things humanity loves most: fur (in the neutral sense) and sex.

Most of the weirdness / stigma around furry is the cosplaying and mental illness, not the anthros themselves. Dressing up in a fursuit is nowhere near actually being an anthro, or fucking one.

If/when technology exists to make realistic anthros (in order of difficulty: VR sex sims, realistic sexdolls, actual genetic modifications), you will see a lot of furry porn, and you will see it consumed by the masses.

http://www.strawpoll.me/11869828

>>162664250
Look at where furry is now: one of the biggest fetishes on the internet. Clearly, if not "natural", there is an appeal somewhere in human biology. Now think about how much bigger that could be if one of the main stigmas associated with it disappeared. Maybe "mainstream" is going too far, but it will clearly get bigger as the tech gets better.
>>
>>162663715
the stigma surrounding furfaggotry is too large for this to happen and it won't change without really drastic changes in the society that would take entire generations and would be only possible with methods that likely would be forbidden before they could be put to use
it took years for homosexualism to get where it is now and even then "faggot" is still a commonly used derogatory word, "coming out of closet" is still a thing and religions still send you to hell for being a homo
not only that; a major difference between homosexualism and furfaggotry is that homosexualism involves nonsexual feelings towards the other party while furfaggotry is for most nothing but a fetish that involves attraction towards things that don't even exist and if it's took any further than that, it turns into zoophilia. also, those who try to take furfaggotry further than just getting off to the porn are the ones who make the whole thing into an laughable autismfest.

so yeah it's not happening

I bet the opposite. There's usually at least one or two people who express that they're intimidated at how quickly others can churn out good-looking pieces, and the extent of help in those threads is usually just "read loomis" (and like we're seeing here, loomis is not very good for beginners)

are the classical elements obsolete? i feel like fire/water/wind/earth just doesn't make sense anymore. on a temperature spectrum ice would be the opposite of fire instead of water and i feel that lightning is left out of the picture. in the five elements, lightning is a sub-element of fire but in nature lightning can be seen in its pure form. and the whole point of having elements is to have some sort of logical circular rps at the end of it and that boggles my mind.

This is the basic gist of it, mobileshit puzzle type thing, the goal being to move all your guys to the end in as few turns as possible, avoiding bombs etc.

has it been done?

My thought was to fill it with different types of obstacles, so that every time you learn the rules of one you meet a new one, or two of them are combined to a different effect.

Been a terrible lazy shit the last few weeks so not much is new since last progress:

-When you get hit you actually explode and become invincible for a while so you can't eat 3 bullets in a row and game over all at once like last build.
-Added bombs, clears screen of bullets, damages everything and makes you invincible for a while.
-Scoring is in, it's so broken that if I didn't have to cut the video to 3mb you'd see me counterstop it in less than 40 seconds.
-Placeholder HUD added with lives/bombs/score/combo_multipler and shit. Cannon cooldown also got a meter indicator next to the ship.

I can give it as much text as I like in a single line and it breaks it up. It doesn't like linebreaks at the moment but that won't matter. It's got a technical limit of like 3k characters to stop some infinite loops but that can be increased without issue.

Yes that is true. But I don't see how else to have a character like w that fits in 3 pixels wide.

You really have no choice but to make it look like that.

why is it when you go to the mall, there are guys that want to fight? like, even before I get inside the mall, just in the parking lot, its like that sometimes. It's like I just want to buy some fucking milk and I feel like these faggots want to come at me and fucking fight with me and it's like, excuse me WHO THE FUCK are you?

like, I want to buy some groceries. The store owner wants me to buy groceries. The store workers basically want me to buy some groceries so they still get payed. The mall owner wants that too so that the store keeps paying rent. So who the fuck are these little dumbasses standing in the middle of the walk ways trying to talk to people who walk past and getting agro on me when i want to buy some fucking groceries? And who the fuck are these retards out in the parking lot and the entrance? like hello?

It's a massive WIP. Making my own tools is a pain in the ass, but a bit necessary. I apologize for the long and low quality webm, but it starts by showing my old animation tool with the programmer UI. Only problem is you easily forget what each variable listed does after a few months of not using it, so I decided to try making something more user friendly. It's slow going. At the end is the actual game I'm making it for. All the animations were made in that first animator, then imported as code into GM. There's probably easier ways of doing it.

Because my programming puzzle game allows open solutions, I have to check tens of parameters for each player created level.
I even have to create some kind of compiler to verify solutions and display errors and warnings each time there is a problem.

Of course, a super fast execution mode is needed to test said solutions and check their output result as a win.

Yeah it's supposed to be very small though I agree it's too small at this point, but I'm not really worried about balancing this until I have more enemy types and start making a real stage, then I'll be able to play around with bullet density and speed until I find something that feels right, and use a hitbox adequate to that.

this desu

playtesting is only valuable during the development process when it's focused, unless you're at the final stages of development and need people to report any kind of problems they see. getting feedback on unfinished graphics and sound is redundant because you're going to be changing shit anyways.

the problem with giving normies your game is that even if you say "hey ignore the placeholder graphics and tell me how the game feels" they will ignore you and only focus on the graphics, because they are not playtesters, they are consumers (and also they're cunts because they're your friends)

i only have one friend i let playtest my games, because he's smart and knows to focus on only what i tell him to, not to mention he always gives good feedback. then when the game is almost complete, i start giving it to my dumb friends and see what kind of bugs and non-fun things they can find in THE FINISHED PRODUCT

tl;dr QA needs to be taken more seriously than how

I wanted to have a 2D skeletal animation system, and the only tool available for that in GM that I was aware of when I started this project was Spline I think. Furthermore, it originally started as me messing around just to see if I could make an animation system of my own, and it turned into its own game.
>I know you'll think I'm a massive shitstain for saying this, but.. have you taken a look at Godot? The inbuilt animator is really good and the scripting language has a nice syntax imo.

If you make a huge mistake, you can revert to another version with Github. Github also allows you to branch and collaborate with other people. It also lets you deploy patches to an existing release.

Dropbox doesn't have any of that.
>>
>>162679548
>Open solutions are a bitch. Creating user editors even more. You have my greatest respect.
I didn't think there were so many rules to respect when creating an open solution level (for my game). Of course it's easy when you are the creator, but when you have to make it so anybody can create a level...
>the level must be completed
>you have to verify the level can be completed
>you have to run the solution
>you have to record the solution
>you have to check the solution respects at least 40 design rules

I spent several weeks on the subject, and I think I got the workflow.
>check if the current solution is structurally correct (no errors such as double instances of one-instance-only runes)
>run the current solution and check the output
>if the output results as a win, allow the user to save the solution as an official solution for the level
>check all other potential errors (such as a missing title for the level)
>if everything is ok, allow the user to export the level (as a PNG card or on the server)

Pic related is the screen (WIP) to manage the various DNA: current DNA, starting DNA (the one to start the level with), and various solutions (gold, dark, etc).
>>
>>162681980
for one, the file limit is extremely limiting considering.
second, you have absolutely no way to revert changes like you can with git repos
third, having multiple people work on the code at once is a nightmare using something like dropbox
four, dropbox accounts can be disabled when there's "too much traffic" which could potentially cause you issues late down the road
five, the upload speed is significantly slower than using a repo
six, it has the tedium or making manual backups
seven, if you work on all your files in the dropbox folder itself rather than importing them once in a while as a backup and your account gets shut down, you've lost the entire project, GG, no returns friend.

Repostan last night's progress. I wasn't having much luck getting Unity's Animator to switch precisely and instantly to attack/damage animations, so I switched to triggering those animations via code. This let me do a much cleaner 1-2 punch combo thing

Also attach the melee hitbox to the player rather than the weapons, as I was having some wacky issues with scale being out of control due to colliders inheriting shit from the weapon models.

I think the foundation is solid enough that I'm gonna start doing some level building. Any Unityfriends have any suggestions for level building in Unity? Is it basically just going to be modelling walls/houses/streets in Blender and dropping them in, or are there plugins/assets/software that make map building a bit easier? The only experience I really have with that is doing L4D maps in Hammer years ago

I haven't gotten that far in my own game yet. I'm still in the prototyping stage, working with primitives only.

some other info for a quick workflow:
CTRL + D to duplicate is faster than dragging in a new object.
you can change the snap size in Edit -> Snap Settings
If you want an object's "anchor point" to be something other than the center, make an empty gameobject and make the original object its child, with some localposition

how the fuck do people not get frustrated trying to figure out code?
i've been sitting here since february and i still don't have the slightest clue on how to start on it.
>>
>>162687117
Yep, I was using Bools and Triggers, and the issue is it just doesn't seem precise. Using bools/triggers, sometimes attacks just wouldn't start, especially if the player tried to attack while a transition was active. Same thing with shifting into the damage animation. Even though the player should be able to shift instantly into "taking damage" from any state, often times Unity would wait until a transition was finished before changing the state, resulting in a short lag between taking damage, and actually playing the animation. This is with Exit Time unchecked, the transitions time set to next to nothing, and the interruption order set so that it should be able to be interrupted no problem

That is way too highpoly for a PS1-style game. Remember with low poly art it's all about the texture. The model should be as basic as possible, and the texture is what will give it detail. The road railing, road, archway, and all of the tree trunks are too detailed. Most of the things should basically be modeled from cubes or 6 sided cylinders.

Those are interesting variants, and they do exist. What I'm working on is a different paradigm than a cellular automata. Cells are not all updated simultaneously, but in real time. I just tried to incorporate GOL on a whim.

The core mechanism here is that the boxes grow until they fill a space, then die after they've replicated 3 times.

hex-grid game of life is interesting in that it has LESS neighbors than grid based, which has 8.

The trees are either six or seven sided cylinders, the road guard-rail is just a flat plane bent into a four-sided shape. I've been trying to keep it simple, but I didn't want to push it too far. Yeah. I'm still using the Animator to handle non-precise animations (e.g. walking, returning to idle after attacks end, etc.) but I'm using Animator.Play() to trigger my animations now, which is much more familiar to me anyway, since I'm used to Game Maker and just setting sprites/subimages

Kind of a game design questions, but if you were playing a "surival" game where controlled a spaceship of people in a post apocalyptic galactic empire and 75% of the gameplay or threats came from internal issues, and the other 25% was external, how would design the galaxy map?

Making a single static entit where you click neighboring starsystems? and then once your in a system click points of interested?

Real time system with warp lanes at the very edges of a system? (2D)

It shouldn't be complicated at all, no elite dangerous 3d, but be creative.

Basically think StarSector. You have a giant colony ship that you would deploy your pilots from (much smaller) to find any threats, albeit actual combat occasions would be far apart, but they would matter a lot as the most obvious (of fuck we're all gonna die).

External threats would like we need to mine this asteroid for ice/water. Or mining a gas planet for other shit that we lost in that attack. Or theres a comet heading towards us, what do you do? We found a giant black sphere that has no mass floating in deep space, what do we do?

Internal threats are like, fire in district, or if you collected an alien artifact, which company would get it to study? What about this new weapon? Do we take it apart for a possibly new power source, or put it on a mech for a pilot to use? Theres a habitable planet nearby, do we let people colonize it, possibly leading to more benefits later, or most likely them getting wiped out, or not?

Basically I imaged dividing the game in 4 parts.

Important Characters - These are people like the heads of imortant families, leaders of Organizations, Ace Pilots, Genius Researchers, and other people of note. Like a person randomly born with physic powers become an important person.

Organizations - There are things like Companies, Worker Unions, Powerful Families, political organizations (pacifists, democrats, liberal, etc), and military branches. Organizations are made of Important characters, basically leaders of organizations will act try and bring important characters to their organization.

And last is Pop Groups, these are largely statistic and number driven like "we have 30k citizens who want to leave the ship", or "we 50k citizens who hate the Nov family and are rioting in their district"

Lastly you have assets which are just basically things or less important groups. A research stations, a military force, an highly advance artifact, anything that can be used really

two different populations:

red expands slowly, but often. the dead ones stay around for a while, decaying and taking up space. this forces the species to expand forward in waves

in contrast, yellow expands slightly farther with each child, but not often. it's dead decay quickly, so the overall population does not expand in one direction

I'm also the guy that made pic related.

So in terms of gamepaly I would imagine it would have a menu based option for internal things, with a top down interface of the ship (think Europa 4 maybe? Really not sure how this would go).

Basically the player should be able to solve his issues using the ship or his assets. Or maybe get other groups to use their assets.

Like if the comet coming towards is is too strong, and the ship has no missles to knock it out, you could basically drain the power of some of the residential districts to increase the power of the shields to survive, or get that General Motors to use a missile of their own to knock it away, but now you owe them.

Or if there is a riot in the district of someone you like, you can choose to send your person forces to help (gaining you favor with the organization, and hate with the pop group).

Hell you could just send your single ultra powerful mech maid to defend him as well.

I'm not sure on the interface with events like these however, how should it look? How much interactiveness should be going on. Should i just have options pop up and you choose? Or make it open ended enough that just introducing the comet or riot would naturally produce these options?

Should the character be selecting his "HQ" clicking "Send out phsyic" and then manually ordering his phsyic to go defend against the rioters in top down 2D internal of the ship?

oh sorry i think you meant in more specific details.

i have a target coordinated and use
x = lerp(x, target_x, 0.01);
y = lerp(y, target_y, 0.01);

0.01 is an arbitrary number and if you lerp your current position by an arbitrary amount instead of your starting position by an increasing amount, youll either never reach your goal or reach your engine's point limit. if you do it my way which is technically wrong, just use a point_distance to make sure you're close enough to the goal position.

you could present it as a war room interface, where all your heads of factions each give you an option, then you choose.

maybe they can overlap? so you have 3 options, and your 8 heads of faction are split on what to do. maybe 5 of them all support one of the options. then you gain/lose influence with factions this way.

as far as assets go, you could unlock new options depending on what assets you have.

then the whole game would be a series of events, and you choose from the presented options each time.

is that what you're aiming for? or do you want a crunchier micromanagement sim?

okay i finally fixed it. I almost had to write my own bmp -> fnt loader, but then I looked in the existing loading code, and saw that it doesnt care what the colours are, only what the palete indexes are (0 for sprite sheet borders, 255 for transparent background, and 1 for font body). So I used GIMP to re-arrange the palette of the 8bit bitmaps and now it f*ing works.

but then some other part is broken.

There would be way more organizations than could reasoably fit in a war room.

Maybe political factions only?

Also I'm worried about this limiting what the player can do. If we can give him enough systems he should be able to solve the issue using them. Like if the comment is coming, what I said are the obvious choices, but what about just deploying a bunch of mechs and phsyciall running them into the side of the comet until it's off course?

Also how would you abstract a city interface? I thought about doing something like you see with my galaxy map, except, instead you would zoom out to see the whole ship and you would zoom in to districts which had buidings/people and other stuff. We would have a general pop controller, and all people would look like a non animated 2D character (side view in a top down world) except imortant characters would have a name tag or something.

you have to think about the systems required to implement running mechs into the side of a comet. If your guiding philosophy is "give players all the tools they need", you end up designing a lot of extra systems. It will have the side effect of making the game opaque and complicated to new players. It could be interface hell. see DF or SS13

OTOH if your philosophy is to give the player a lot of interesting events, you can just think of them and add them. text is cheap! You basically only need one system, to influence the factions / organizations.

to solve the specific problem of too many leaders, only show a portion of them for each decision.

Win ME in VMWare

you can download VMWare workstation trial version from their website

then search google for a text serial

then disable udpates and add the serial and have full VMWare workstation

the VMWare guest tools install on Win95/98/ME now and give good graphics, sound, mouse integration, and drag and drop file sharing through the VM window.

yeah the VMWare tools in Win9x is pretty big, VirtualBox Guest additions require Win2k or WinXP or something.

I don't know I used to use virtual box and it was okay. The good thing about virtual box is you can use vhdx as the hdd image.

Then you can double click the vhdx in windows and mount it as a drive, letting you copy files into the VM manually.

There's no shortage of libraries for physics. Saving isn't difficult if you do ECS right (minimal to no references between objects). The small time you'll save using GM instead will be dwarfed by the time you waste having to work around it.
>>
>>162702069
And that's why you just use GameMaker normally instead of falling for the ECS meme.
The joke had a nice run but it's not funny anymore.
>>
>>162701541
I'm looping through the tiles to see which one the player collides with. Then I check if it is a sloped tile. If so, I do what that guide says:
>if taller edge of slope is closer, we are colliding
>end there for horizontal collisions
>for vertical collisions, there is one more step: get height value to stop at
>do this by interpolating player's position relative to platform he's on
You can see the code for that last part in the tutorial, mine is very similar to it. I think there might be something wrong, though, since the interpolation is supposed to return a number between 0 and 1, but sometimes it's negative.
I can post my code, it's pretty ugly right now, though. I wanted to actually get it working before cleaning up a little.

How does someone even go about designing a system like Dwarf Fortress or SS13?

How do you get that level of complexity where cats can walk on beer, lick their paws, and get drunk.
>>
>>162702489
you start with a small idea and core system, and keep adding shit

and is that an actual thing in DF now?

for that specific interaction, there would be a body parts system, used originally for combat. so there is a "hands" body part. then that hand can have a liquid on it, or a weapon in it. after that it's a simple if, then to get a cat drunk
>>
>>162702284

Is the one or two (you)s you get for every 50 times you post really worth it?
>>
>>162702164
Where did the entity touch you anon.
>>
>>162702489
>Dwarf Fortress
It's not actually that complex. The actions that agents in the game can take are fairly limited, and stuff like "cats can walk on beer, lick their paws, and get drunk" is as simple as making it so that objects can become made of whatever substance, and then follow proper interaction rules for that substance, e.g. licking a cat that has rolled in beer will make you drunk because the cat is now flagged as being "made of" beer and causing appropriate effects.

It just seems more complex than it is because it uses ASCII graphics and the input methods range from "byzantine but functional" to "outright and intentionally awful"

Honestly, the most impressive part of it is the fluid dynamics, but it's tile-based so even then it's kinda meh.

>SS13?
Massive iteration and collaboration. SS13 started off as incredibly simple and incredibly unstable. It's been over 10 years since, and dozens if not hundreds of different people have been adding to it over that time.
>>
>>162702489

>Nothing happens in a game without it being told to do so.
that is incredibly reductive.

the point of those LOL SO COMPLEXE games is that there's a few simple behaviours that can all interact with things in tandem

e.g. you code in that blood pools are slippery, and NPCs bleed when they're hurt. so you can end up with situations where a guy gets gored with an axe but then the attacker slips in the resulting gush of blood. it seems a lot more complex than it really is because "he gored a guy and slipped on the guy he gored!" is so silly but it's actually just two fairly mundane reactions going off in sequence

SS13 is a good example of this, horrible doom foams are usually just lots of simpler chemical reactions going off at once, big explosions with stuff getting sucked out into space is just the atmos engine working as intended after a lot of indoor tiles got deleted, etc. even the phenomenon of "Space Wind" some servers have is just a side-effect of atmos working exactly as intended but falling into a feedback loop

I see no reason why you would take this joy away from the player. Besides, it must be a shit ton of resources and development time to find an algorithm which checks this.

Even thou I use Tortoise SVN at work, I fail to set it up at home to function as smoothly as there.

Setting up a new repo with GitHub's desktop client is kind of a hassle (especially when the repo is at GitLab), and once it fucked up the code so much because of a conflict that I just rage quit.

So, the question is: how do I get gud at version control?

Well Github's client was only designed to be used with Github.
You could give TortoiseGit a try since you're already used to the UI. SourceTree is the other popular client.

The VR audience is still extremely niche. And if better, more usable controls that facilitate actual decent games aren't established, it'll go the way of the Kinect, for essentially the same reason: trying to market to casuals (who have the attention span of mayflies) with a niche, expensive product that serves as a brief novelty experience rather than a general improvement in gaming quality-of-life.

A lerp is a lerp. Lerping from 0 to max works exactly the same as lerping from max to 0, only in reverse. Alternatively, lerp not by value, but by (1 - value), which also does exactly the same, but in reverse.

I have a question /vg/ how do you process the npc locations?

Lets say I have a world where there's hundreds/thosands of NPC in it. They move around dynamically based on surroundings. Now I would want them to only be visually present when I'm near them, however how do I go about continuously updating their location and efficiently? I'm think of 2 AI managers, one, highly dynamic and interactive, other is a dumb AI that manages the movement when they fade out/are not active.

From what I can think of, the best way to do is to have the NPC data have starting point and have a range of roaming area, i.e 50 yards. Then every x seconds, the NPC x,y is updated randomly within the 50 yards of starting area. Ofcourse the starting area could change when the NPC is interactive.

What do you think?

Could be useful for a low-overhead interaction simulation. If after random spread of (all or a percentage) of NPCs two of them are "touching", they spread information, or diseases, or rumours, or generate wealth, or simply sexy times happen and one of them has a chance to get pregnant.

Densely populated areas have a higher rate of interaction. NPCs with a bigger range or quicker updates get more interactions than those with smaller range and slower updates. Players can influence population density, seed the areas with specific NPCs meant to influence the population and so on.

Alright, I need to do an inventory, what type do you guys prefer for a homeless simulator?

One where you play inventory tetris? one that's really simple?

I don't want to take away from the immersion though, so maybe like a "doom style" where you hit 1 2 3 4 5 for 5 slots, but then I have to setup actions and simplify everything, how does that sound?

I'm going to cut a majority of this on screen crap out, I'm well aware it's clutter, I need it for testing.

I dunno. The less extreme your pose the easier it is to model, proportion, weight and animate I found. The reason you move the arm out a bit is it is easier to weight with it away from the body and it can help with having the shoulder deform a bit more natural. Otherwise I would have that neutral pose as well.

since you are doing such an innovative game, then you need an innovative inventory system
hobos like pockets
make your inventory based on pockets. player can upgrade their gear by getting coats with more pockets

take the item tetris and turn it into pocket tetris
>place items wherever you want
>have pocket blocks of varying sizes scattered all over the inventory space
>player then has to cover all items with pocket blocks

now you have an inventory minigame where one doesn't try to fit items into inventory, but instead one tries to fit the inventory around the items

You're going to have to be more specific than that
Messing around with the velocity settings doesn't fix it, and clamping the max translation speed is just a cheap hack that doesn't solve the root of the problem
This is with a physics material that's got bounciness set to 0.9 so theoretically it should be deteriorating but it's doing the opposite

that killbeam right on the edge of screen transition is bad design. You are a bad designer. Of course you can see it in advance, and need to remember it's there, but it's unclear when it's on or off or if it's even cycling off-screen. That makes it bad.
