I think that that's from gamemaker and that effect thingy is a new feature in it.
>>
>>2758873
shit. you're making me wish I bought into that Gamemaker humblebundle now just for this.

Can this animation creation be exported? The whole gif just fills me with wonder, that it's really that easy to make animated pixel art using those tools.

My very first. Also, you guys who draw sprites, does it takes like 10 years to make sprites for a game or you guys resort to modeling?
>>
>>2759131

That's just a low resolution drawing, not pixel art. Try again
>>
>>2758936
I'm pretty sure that's GameMaker 2, since the closed beta started not long ago. So even if you had bought GM:S from HumbleBundle you wouldn't have been able to profit from this feature.

I personally did buy it from the HumbleBundle a few months ago so I wonder if I'll have a discount for GM:S2. I hope so considering I'll need it for my gamedev endeavors.

>>2759131
Funny enough we've had someone draw a Kirby previous thread too, instead his was actually pixel art. Take a look and compare with yours : >>2719636

me

I downloaded the beta for Gamemaker 2 today and got to play with the sprite animation toolset first hand today and it really is just as easy as it looks. I'm really bad at drawing and I was able to do this (probably not saying much as I know I'm bad at art, but I'm amazed with I can do with this.)

I have some complaints though. They reallllllllly do not want you to export out anything. The image sequence is all there and I can retrieve them, but the frames are labeled strangely so it was a pain in the ass having to put together this gif because I had to manually pick out the frames one by one. Here are some of the filenames:

6e0e42c8-df98-4193-843c-aa8b280d00c9.png

94ee1ab8-1e0c-45e1-bfa7-a4fbea866a10.png

it's bullshit.

Is there a way to do animations like this without using Gamemaker 2?
>>
>>2758847
Is this considering cheating or just a tool for pixel art?
>>
>>2760533
It makes animation easy, that's for sure, but you still have to draw it
>>
>>2760532
As far as I know there wasn't any problem like that in GM:S1 so chances are people will complain and they'll fix it.

I don't want to take over this thread, but tower, path blocks are the most important. Additionally a block to place towers on, and a 'decoration' block (No tower can be placed, and it's not a pathway).
A 'creep'/enemy which walks down the pathway is also important.
I'd like all the blocks to be the same size, and the enemy to be the same size - or smaller

>>
>>2776129
If you want to learn to pixel, start smaller. 1/4-1/2 the current size. this will force you to focus more on individual pixel placement. outline is uneven in thickness, clean it up to 1 pixel and clean up jaggies.

In Gimp, you can scale by using Image > Scale Image, and then selecting "None" for interpolation. It will work best if you scale it to a direct multiple of the image dimensions.

Working from another artist's lineart, trying to improve my pixel art technique. Shading has always been my bane, even with regular art, so that's the part I'm struggling with most--how many colors, how to work with the outlines, et cetera.

Here's one of the sprites I'm most happy with, and here's my thoughts:
I've currently got five shades per color, including the lines, and I can probably cut that down to four/add a highlight tint.
Outlines need to be shaded more intelligently, lighter where the light would be.
Shaded areas in general need to be improved, particularly on the face but just generally with a clearer idea of where the light is going (always been something I've struggled with)
All the colors tend toward red in the shadows but maybe I should try to push them a bit closer.

>>
>>2776945

>pillowshading.png
>>
>>2776950
Yeah, I tried not to, but you get it especially on the face because facial features are just baffling to me. The problem I keep running into is when trying to do Good Shading on faces, it always comes out looking kind of like stubble.
>>
>>2776960

I would suggest trying to shade with just the lineart and two colors for light and shadow first, as if the figure was a 3d model without any textures. You can do it as a multiply layer and add separate flats later on.
>>
>>2776966
I was going back to the flats anyway, so I'll see about giving it a shot. I'd still like a bit more depth to it than three shades, but I can worry about that once I've got the right shapes blocked out, I suppose.

I want to start working on making Windows 98 styled icon substitutes for modern programs and such, I just don't know what settings to use in photoshop before I convert them to .ICO

I think the right size is 32x32, but is there an easier way of say pixelating a modern icon or just converting it to bitmap?
>>
>>2781516
is that joseph
>>
>>2781884
Well you should probably posterize the icons first, to minimize the color palette. Note how a lot of the shading in those icons is done through dithering.

Also, the icons in the screenshot you posted look like they're 48x48.

It's easier to compare against each other when you can see them all at once, though I do play the gif when I'm checking them to see if there's any big differences. I am noticing that I'll have to fix the chest lighting on the last one now.

I got about halfway through the next set, had to start over because I was slipping back into symbols and not actually thinking about where the light would go.

I feel your pain anon.
I'm no pixel artist, but the light should get more intense the closer it is to your light source.
It also serves as a great compositional tool to bring the focal point closer to what's important - your character's face.
And don't put light where it can't reach, like the back of the wings. It might get some reflected light, but that won't be enough for it to appear on a limited palette.

About to make some top/down game prototype in NES/Gameboy style, so 16x16 sprites for the characters in the same vein as Link's Awakening or the first few Pokémon games. On top of my head there's also Survival Kids.

Aside from those said games, do you guys have any ideas of games which I could study and inspire myself from? I realized such tiny sprites are in the end much harder than doing something like 24x24 or 32x32, so the more stuff I can gather the better. Additional thoughts and comments are also welcome.

Pixel art is one of the times when it's imperative that you start out by copying and studying how the process works.
This is just a shitty drawing with a square brush tool and some basic moving parts.
It's more to it, but it's not difficult once you know what you're doing.
If you want to start somewhere start by looking up pixel art tutorials, then make objects not people or characters.
Once you learn how to make a static image then you can try some two frame animation.

I need other opinions than my own! It definitely isn't done yet, and the colors certainly need change, but it's getting there. What should I adjust/delete/add/whatever? Does it need more colors? Give me whatever it needs to get better. When i'm through with my soldier, I'll make alternate versions of him, and animate a few basic attacks, walking cycle and perhaps some other stuff.

Also, his left arm, as well as the shield (yes, that's a shield), isn't something I've begun working on.
>>
>>2797322
It's all a bit dark. Needs more contrast/highlights. I also wouldn't recommend working on a white background, it can affect your color choices. Try medium gray. Forms are a little tough to make out, especially on the helmet. Worry about establishing forms before grit and detail

>>
>>2797345
I disagree to this.

I've seen many, many good pixel artists who suck at standard digital art. Actually most of them are bad at this, but are on the opposite pretty good at making anything in pixel art.

With that said I of course agree that fundamentals are needed, still you can very well only pixel art regularly and become good at it as long as you study how others do it.
>>
>>2797789
>I've seen many, many good pixel artists who suck at standard digital art
show me one pixel artist who isn't proficient at drawing. fundamentals, as you say, are necessary, and they are more easily learned with drawing than with pixel art, as pixel art just adds its own set of obstacles in order to make the grid work.
>>
>>2797782

is not the same thing as "good". What I meant is, although they know their fundamentals and although there isn't strictly anything wrong with them, their digital drawings suck.

Looks like we're on the same page anyway.

>>2797798
You won't really get anywhere as an artist if you ever hope to show your stuff to people out there if you can't handle a comment like his. He wasn't even rude by /ic/'s standard, if anything he took the time to comment to help you. Don't be so fragile.
>>
>>2797798
No. You can either care about improving or you can care about how people pussyfoot around telling you what they think. If you want the latter, then take your shitty pixel art and fuck off.
>>
>>2797802
I definitely need to work on the aspect of myself taking everything a little too personal. However, I do stand by, and believe, that constructive critizism can be shared with others in a more civil manner. While he may not be rude by some standard, it's important to realize that some people are slightly more fragile than others. I know that I sound like a huge pussy, but please, bear with me.
>>
>>2797813
>I do stand by, and believe, that constructive critizism can be shared with others in a more civil manner
No it won't just because you wish so, and this wouldn't even be in your best interest either, as anon just stated. If you want people to be politically correct then go to /r/Pixelart
>but please, bear with me.
No I won't because this is something you need to sort out yourself, being lax with you isn't helping you, all the opposite.

This is how 4chan will be, no matter the board you go to. If you can't handle it then go back to an username-ego-based website.
>>

of course it could be more civil. on a site that isn't 4chan. fragile people have no place here. now stop being a huge pussy and move on.

That's like saying to be a good sculptor you need to be a painter. Fundamental wise they are connected but when it comes to the practice of both it's a whole different game.
Creating value with color pencils is not the same as creating value in pixel art. The tools are different, the approach is different, and you would have to learn that aspect in that realm of art work.

That's actually pretty good.
You kept it simple which is good when first animating.
One thing i noticed was there are two dark pixels left over from that front leg moving forward.
You can see it at the sprite size but when you zoom in it's very obvious. But that's just me being meticulous.

It isn't even a matter of growing a thick skin, this IRL would be unacceptable desu, its more a matter of knowing where you are. This here is nothing and should be treated as nothing.

How badly done is this? First piece, haven't read any tutorials, just went with my gut.
>>
>>2801233
I can tell where you were trying to shade the light coming from, but it doesn't make a whole lot of sense when looked at as a whole. The shape of the tree feels blob-like, which is partially the silhouette and partially the shading.

I'd suggest looking at references of trees of the type you're going for as you're working to get a sense of the shape and where you'll see light and dark.

Also, go and read some tutorials already, because there's some pretty basic stuff going on with the lines. Since pixel art is restricted to a grid, you've got to be extra-careful about the shapes that your lines imply, and I can see some hard corners on the leaves that probably shouldn't be there.

I think with dark lines it looks a bit better for me. Overall 10/10, would bang
>>
>>2801720

It looks well rounded overall to me. Increasing the difference between the colors would help them stand out better at small resolutions .
>>
>>2801720
the dark outline looks good with your shading, but it depends on the background

you could also experiment with larger areas of flat color and no outline

To those who are more or less content with their current skills in pixel art, what was the biggest thing that has helped you along the way? Something that made it click, or something that you wish you had known sooner?
>>
>>2803185
The most important general skill is knowing how to draw. The most important thing I learned specific to pixel art was clusters. Knowing how to make clusters click removes banding and noise and allows you to express the most you can in the smallest amount of space.

Learning some amount of color theory tends to be really useful, as is heavily referencing other games when you're stuck on stuff.

Really, though, you're just going to have to do a ton of pixel art before you're at a decent level, no matter what path you take to doing it.
>>
I have been usin GraphicsGale for spriting, but now that I'm trying to animate, it's starting to suck.

- I have to add layers every time I make a new frame
- General lack of options, for example, can't reference a frame, need to make a copy, and if I change the original, need to manually copy over
- The undocked windows get out of place every startup

What should I be using?

Going through the thread, I notice the spriters more than the pixel artists because I am a former spriter.

If you are a spriter and want an edit/constructive criticism just respond to this post and I'll do my best regardless of whether i think you have potential or not.

Ok so you,>>2801720 are doing everything right, but I'd like for you to consider the following:

What does it mean for a sprite to be successful? In the old days it meant it had to be able to run on simple hardware like a NES or GBC. Keep that in mind when you make sprites, this is art with a purpose. Just because you CAN use 3 brown shades doesn't mean you have to, if you can accomplish the same effect with less colors, why not do so?

Next, i recommend stealing the palettes from actual game sprites. 99.99% of the time the professional's got it more right than you because they have already gotten their work on a game. Why reinvent the wheel ? Games with simple but elegant palettes include: Disgaea, FFTA, Advance Wars, Pokemon GBC games, Zelda ALTTP;

When I put misty's Gold/silver sprite next to yours, one could say its a more successful sprite. its smaller, more elegant, it uses the same color in multiple places (this should be your mantra) but most of all its an easier read.

Save yours and this sprite as a 16 color bitmap in paint, which is something you should do to test what colors truly are necessary, and viola!

everything else, trust your own judgement.
Good luck in your endeavors.
>>
>>2804006

At first glance I thought of the same artist that >>2803977 mentions. There's such a weird disconnect with the upper body and dress vs the legs that it looks like you copied and pasted some other legs instead of drawing the whole body in the first place. I can't really imagine what she looks like underneath. Also your stroke has AA. If you're using something like Blending Options then I don't think you can avoid that but selecting the area and then right clicking > Stroke should keep it clean.

This isn't what I would suggest the final product to look like as I roughly shaped out things without detail but hopefully it suffices as a comparison. Look into colour palettes, study multiple artists and don't skip over anatomy. There are a ton of tutorials covering nearly anything you would want so you just need to go looking.

I'm confused about this part, please point out what you mean on the drawing if possible.

Legs did feel out of place indeed, especially her right leg and the part stuck to the skirt. I'm guilty of having sketched her without drawing the hips or anything like that and directly blocking head+torso+skirt+legs, I'll take this as a lesson to not attempt shortcuts anymore. Your redraw feels much more pleasing and logical to the eye. Thanks.
>>

Googling has been less than successful for me. How'd you go about getting the palette from those games?

There's something odd about your tree but not necessarily in a bad way, I like it.

The texture for the trunk isn't good at all though, considering how much your leaves pop out you'll need something with some sort of presence as well to make everything match.

Instead of your outline being just white 1px it has some slightly transparent white pixels on the edge of that. Compare yours to the one you were inspired by. It might just come down to taste but I see most people doing a stroke with no anti aliasing.

Also I just had another look at it in Photoshop and you have just under 40 colours. In pixel art you should try to aim for a low amount and not have unneeded or extremely similar colours. I reduced the colours to show how similar they can be even though the amount of colours are greatly reduced. I did it through Photoshop so some colours might look weird. Doing it yourself would give you better control.
You can practice how to get the best use out of colours by finding limited palettes that already exist online and then making your own.
>>
>>2805141
>it has some slightly transparent white pixels on the edge of that
Oh I see, that, well I did it on purpose as a final touch. Don't really ask me why, I was just experimenting, and after going through C.'s work I believe (s)he was doing the same thing for pretty much all of their work. I think regarding that it depends on the piece, and I don't think I have enough experience doing these sorts of illustration pieces to know when it's a good idea or not to do it.

I didn't realize I had been using that many colors, I'll be careful next time and try to study / make palette during the sketching phase. Well I originally had but adding colors as I progressed without really keeping count.

Thanks again for your time.
