Hold this number and get a PB, say 1 hour.
Ask yourself, is reducing that by 15% (9 minutes) feasible? Congrats you get a 50-51 minute PB, sub 1 hour if you care.
Next 15% would be ~43m, 36, 30, 25...

Granted if you ever could reach 25 you probably would have made a larger leap than 15% at any time.
However, assuming you could consistently cut off 15% every time it would still take 5 runs to halve it (again, assuming you can).

Deminishing returns are deminishing returns.
Also the 15% is arbitrary, but a lot better than specific "sub X" goals unless they're literally right next to your PB.

There are a few exceptions that appear including initial runs (i.e. a 7 hour run becomes 5 because they have a feel of the route) and new stuff being discovered.

In those cases they would still bottom out to a grind fest once one has implemented them.

Just look at OoT Any%, people are still fighting over #1 and it's occasionally being driven lower.
Every time they reset is an unskippable 3 minute cutscene immediately followed by a bunch of overhyped setups and other bullshit.
All to save a few seconds and be #1... or fail and try again.

When you start a "brand new game" there is a forced 3 minute infodump cutscene (read: only for if you care about the plot) before you're dumped into Link's house and gain control.

At this point you can save the game, aka a better starting point, and it is a consistently unaltered state to be in.
Timing could start upon leaving.

Go watch any OoT Any% run for 5 minutes (ff if you want) and you'll see exactly what my gripe with it is.

It's very simple logic actually. What if it were possible to load a save file, complete one mission, and then go back to the starting point and do a speedrun like that? It sure is possible to do that in many free roam games with a save system. It's just not legit.

Real OoT runner here with the inside scoop: The real reason why the intro cutscene is still included in timing is because all of the runners that have been grinding the game for years would be absolutely furious about all the time they wasted watching it if it were no longer required. Everything else said in this thread so far is correct. But I don't think it truly does him justice.

Saying he was an important figure in the SM64 community is actually an understatement. First off, to the best of my knowledge every current top runner of SM64 credits Sig as their inspiration for first wanting to run the game. I don't believe there's a single runner who inspired the next generation quite like this.
But not only was he an inspiration to the runners, for an enormous number of people he was their first introduction to speedrunning. I'm fairly confident in saying he introduced more people to speedrunning than any other single person. With the possible exception of Cosmo no one else is even remotely close. In fact, if you'd asked me this question 2 years ago I would feel fairly confident in saying that he got more people into speedrunning than the GDQ's themselves.

But I think that still doesn't explain just how big Siglemic was. Back when speedrunning was still super super small and hadn't hit the mainstream (no where near what it is even a few years ago let alone now), Siglemic had multiple newspaper articles printed about him. I first found his stream from an article PRINTED (not online) in a national newspaper. I can't for the life of me remember which one (family got multiple at the time), but i found this article from the new york post http://nypost.com/2013/02/04/the-glory-and-heart-of-the-speedrun/ as a bit of proof. I know that wasn't the one because the dates about 8 months too late but it gives you an idea.
And you have to understand, he wasn't popular because he was a great streamer. He had minimal chat interaction choosing to focus on the speedrun, and it wasn't uncommon for him to go entire runs without saying a word. He was just in the right place at the right time.

oot isnt an inherently difficult game. the "tricks" are as easy as most people shitpost about it, as someone who used to run the game.

the reason oot is difficult is because it has been optimized so much that every tiny movement mistake becomes important. the difference between super mario bros 1 difficulty from going for 4:59 to going for 4:56 is enormous, but that doesnt mean the game itself is inherently any harder. its only a function of optimization.

inherently hard games are those that have enormous learning curves for movement and things, such as sm64 or super metroid. a new player will never ever be able to replicate a top players movement in these games. oot on the other hand is extremely easy to replicate in small segments. the only challenging thing is just doing that for 15 minutes without making any mistakes
