I am an Empire Sim fanatic and can't think of what alternative you are referring to. If you instigate a peasant uprising it would still fundamentally be a siege with either a peasant force to boost your numbers or a weakening of the fortifications before the siege.

Marshal quests are terrible too. Half the time I scout out territories only then go on a treasure hunt on a Marshall that changed objectives or worst essentially got routed. I am always at a financial net negative whenever I purchase cattle for the Marshall as well.

I still do Marshall quests so I can slowly build up relations with my future vassals but I've become increasingly prone to refusal. There aren't any real negatives for doing so actually.

This is a pretty standard list m8. The only notable cons I can think of is a lack of a true Native+ module (which is typically one of the Diplomacys) and lack of Suvarnabhumi Mahayuth (which makes sense as it is a module that was released long after the height of Warband's popularity and still feels a little unfinished).

Considering that Floris isn't #1 I am rather impressed actually. PoP should be #1 despite /mbg/'s hate for the mod simply because it was among the first "complete" modules that goes back to original M&B. Furthermore it was never intended to have mass appeal in the first place due to the module advertising itself as "hardcore" (although ironically it is actually one of the easier mods now).

Floris was always a clusterfuck that was endlessly shilled as basically a replacement to Native.

I'm a bit surprised that Warsword but I guess any Warhammer mod is going to be top ten by default.

Floris with all of it's features enabled is one of the least Native mods out there. Especially when you consider even fundamental game play elements like weapon animations being changed for the worst, as many features of the module.. Floris with it's features enabled is among the worst "base line" for Warband a new player can have, only mods like The Last Days can compete here.

I get it actually. It feels kind of like a cheat when you're running around with a tier 5 to 7 army together with 10 surgery. Barely any of your troops ever get killed because they're so strong and most lords have a tier 1-4 core army, so they're easily wiped aside. Go with heavily armoured Nord infantry or Rhodok fucking everything and it's 2-3 troopers killed per large battle.

At that point you've already won the game, except for the most lopsided battles.

to be fair only very few mods change the meta of amassing top tiers and steamrolling the game
1257 sort of does because of the scale of the mod and top tiers can still be murdered by lower tiers thanks to the way the mod is balanced
VC does due to a mix of the above and much slower troop level progression
caribbean sort of does because it's almost like a standardized army of no upgrades due to the recruitment system, where you enlist men for their role specifically and they don't upgrade

Its a bit of a shame too since Sengoku was pretty dynamic as far as their warlords are concerned. Yoshimoto had famed mounted archers that are completely gone. Nobunaga was a techno-fanatic that had among the earliest historically documented Ironclad Warships and first documented usage of volley fire. Takeda Shingen should be giving players a taste of their own medicine with Cavalry swarms. The setting even has a multiple "LuBu" figures in Uesugi Kenshin (God of War, even defeated Nobunaga), Tadakatsu Honda (reportedly never harmed in battle), and Yukimura Sanada (personally wounding Tokugawa in his final moments). Gekokujo doesn't even any Ninja shenanigans going around.

That said Gekokujo gets points for simply being a very stable and technically thorough total conversion.

Silverstag ironically enough wasn't mentioned, even though it's basically Floris without the troop progression. It keeps the unique troops, hell, even expands them, but doesn't allow you to upgrade a tier 1 peasant to a tier 7 heavily armoured crossbowman.

Native actually has a larger equipment variety than most mods actually, especially if you ignore aesthetics and focus on functionality. Most mods either have a sub-set of Native's equipment for the setting (Brytenwalda, TLD, technically even mods like 1257AD). This is doubly so if you ignore aesthetics and equipment redundancies in function.

That is part of the reason why Native remains a solid starting module. Many mods will basically try to re-envision a particular element of Warband's gameplay or put a hyper emphasis on a sub-set of the gameplay that Native Warband offers.

if by towns you mean villages then it's pretty hard to do since you'd have to constantly patrol your village
best you can do is have a cavalry army/pathfinding and build a watch tower so you know if enemies are nearby your village and can quickly respond

Constantly attack isolated Lords to prevent a Marshal force from raiding your village.

If a Marshal force does attack your village; and you cannot handle them, try to scare them off by besieging a castle/town.

You can use your villages as bait to engage the enemy forces dismounted, which is particularly good if you are Rhodok/Nord. If you do this you may want to place farmers in their own troop tier as you will want to kill them off ASAP due to weakening your overall army composition. This is assuming your army is large enough for this to be a factor of course.

The main advantage of staying with a single faction troops isn't really morale penalty but morale bonuses (assuming you are fighting for that faction of course).

You only get morale penalties with faction troops if you are actively killing troops of the same faction. If the faction is wiped out or you simply are not at war with them it is not a big deal. Even if you are at war with them it takes a while before it gets really terrible.

I still prefer staying with one faction in Native overall just because it is easier to localize all recruitment to choice villages in close proximity and Rhodok has everything you will ever need.

For me right now the morale penalty for my Nord troops are -10, bit less for my Rhodoks. I've had that penalty drop really low while rekting Vaegirs though. I had two Vaegir Guards in my party for a bit, but they got -23 morale, so I dropped them. As long I keep food variety and fights up, it's no issue.

Note also that this playthrough is my first time playing the game in a year.

Firstly put damage at 100% if you haven't already.

Nothing wrong doing this. The "Freelancer" mod was essentially created with this in mind, although I think the module has some subtle flaws that make it unusable for veterans. You can join a faction as a Mercenary and join in on lord battles as well.

Once you get more experienced with the game you will likely start to feel the limitations of what an individual can do. Most obviously perhaps being sieges and battles against Lords with elite troops. There is also nothing exclusive about being engaging in personal combat and having an army. You can build your army to compliment your front line escapades.

The Buddhist Monks at the time had a lot of political sway and essentially treated themselves as above the law. For example they actively plotted political assassinations and militarized criminals that they gave sanctuary to.

My guess is that Nobunaga did it to both assert his authority and set precedence. Especially to the Missionaries of what would happen if they tried to push their luck. My guess is that Nobunaga was always a genius and got the moniker due to lashing out against traditional Japanese culture and values in obnoxious ways up until Hirate Masahide committed seppeku.

He would still do so later on but he somehow turned into an illustration of his influence and power rather than childish flailing. Although oddly he also became obsessed with Japanese tea ceremony, to the point that Matsunaga Hisahide blew up his tea cup set and his head (skull cups) just to spite Nobunaga.

If there is another Sengoku mod hopefully they embrace the eccentricities of the factions. When I played Total War: Shogun 2 and saw Nobunaga being treated as a generic Japanese lord I blew an aneurysm. Gekokujo is unfortunately similar in all the factions being essentially homogeneous.
