File too big, so I have to use pomf:
https://u.pomf.is/tamdlv.webm

+ Energy regen works properly now, dodging and sprinting are a more tactical decision(until you get better parts and upgrade your shit etc)
+ Enemy stop shooting from impossible angles
+ Minor AI improvements

Things to do till demo day:
1. Model some proper guns
2. Improve AI - stop enemies from clustering
3. Improve AI - Add new attack, Missile barrage
4. Add equipment and stats to the player
5. Add some kind of rating system(either dmc like or a simple Score)
5. Polish shit

Might have to drop point 4 for DD, depending on how much I have to do next week.

If that's what you want to communicate, you'd want to do something like putting visible seams on the hip and waist joints like so (and maybe the rest of the body), otherwise it's just going to look like a leotard that he takes off at the end of the day.

Then again you could always go full anime and have a cutscene where they explicitly explain that the suit is bonded to the skin and have a minor character wonder out loud if cyborgs have dicks or not. And then blood would shoot out of everyone's noses.

That isn't really intuitive, especially when you're guiding around a big ass sprite. I'd really make the hitbox bigger now if I were you, otherwise you'll probably fuck yourself over later on when you realize that you want to change it and have to redo all the patterns.

Sin Cos and Tan are high-school level math. You should learn it.

Basically this gif.

The wavey line on the side is Sin
The wavey line on the bottom is Cos
The line that fucks off into the sky is Tan

>quadronian
You mean quarternion?

Its a way of describing change in 3d space. So if you want an object rotated in 3d space, you apply a quarternion.

But really, if you don't know something you have Google. Even if you can't understand the wikipedia article on the subject, you'll find something that can teach you this shit if only you'd actually go and look for it.

I'm a musician for a fan project that crosses megaman X and my little pony, they haven't been able to find a sprite tile artist, so they're looking for volunteers that can do this style.

If you're interested in being a tile artist for a retro snes game email me at

[email protected]

And I'll forward it to them or give you their email/skype to speak to them directly if you're up to par.
I can't give much for examples of the work from the game, we also need someone discreet to avoid a cease adn disist warning/order. But here's some OLD version of the loops I made for the game, I have made roughly 28.
https://soundcloud.com/daydreamanatomy/sets/mlpgameproject

And this outdated demo someone played:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3CB1pdsosSc
(all of the art assets are placeholder obviously, the demo level doesn't exist as far as I know.)

Also it's not a reskin or a rom hack, custom engine, built from the ground up, there are some placeholders from the X series. It is fun to play hte in house beta.
>>
How do you make a game and not become hated by the playerbase or your peers?
>>
>>153161445
simple, don't interact with them so you effectively don't exist, at that point they can only hate the game
>>
>>153161445
Just don't do anything terrible

Make it work and run properly, don't lie, release updates, avoid social justice topics.

>>153161207
>Wikipedia page for math
No matter what look for, the wiki page on any concept is the most complicated thing I read about it. I can read any other article and generally grasp it and understand. The wiki page is a completely different beast. I can have a very firm grasp on a topic and go on it's wiki page and still have problems reading it.

Like I just fucking googled, 'addition' and I scroll slightly down and it is being described in sigma notation.
>>
>>153161445
Explain your reasoning when making changes. Avoid introducing bugs post-release.
Be subtle with your nerfs/buffs.
Don't sperg out when someone says they don't like your game.
>>
>>153161445
draw a thick line between your interests, social justice, shitposting, literally everything but your game and your game
become a ghost that shits out a game and keeps everything in private
>>
>>153161445
make sure your game uses monochromatic sillhouette graphics only, has awful mechanics and gameplay and instead relies purely on edginess and shock value to get anyone to play it. Make it a game about a recent tragedies or rape or killing toddlers or raping and killing toddlers. Throw a big drama fit about how you're being persecuted for making a game about social justice and exposing society's hypocrisy and then suck a few dicks to get it favorably reviewed
>>
>>153161445
Don't get defensive and heated over every comment, no matter how stupid. You represent your game and no one cares why you're mad at some cunt.

Communicate with the community regularly. When something goes wrong, no one wants a dev that is completely silent on the matter leaving everyone to wade around in confusion.

Be vocal about why you changed things.

Don't lie and don't blame a shortcoming of the game all the playerbase or potential players. That makes you a cunt with an inflated ego.
>>
>>153161020

It's hard to tell from the .webm, but all enemy bullets on-screen are turning into homing gems when you destroy an enemy. If you're struck by a bullet outside of your dash, you either lose up to 20 gems (if you had less than that) or your total number divided by 20. They bounce around the screen and disappear unless you pick them up. Essentially the game isn't about destroying the enemy; it's about timing every dash for the most score.

Been working on a introductory dungeon, but here's a room I made with a tougher version of the ranged enemy, that should hopefully teach the player that sometimes they need to use the environment and the enemy AI to their advantage to overcome tough enemies.

Here, if you don't make the enemy step on the conveyor belt he will be fast enough to keep up with you and shoot you, and optionally you can kill it by going around, using the conveyor belt to outrun it, and trapping it inbetween the blocks where its no longer a threat.

Just make a contract that says that all content, code and so on created for the game is either exclusively given to the team. Or non-exclusively licensed for all eternity with no royalties and full right given to modifiy, sell, sublicense or anything else imaginable.

If you're earning thousands of dollars from a patreon then it stands to reason that an exclusive license is acceptable and it would all be like normal work.

I'm having issues with random snapping with my sprite's rotation. Are there just weird math quirks you need to work around as values approach 0?

I'm trying to make it so the sprite looks in the direction it is going towards so I calculate the angle based on movement input. It works fine when I am moving around, but when the sprite slows down it will snap to one of the 8 directions.
>>
>>153165018
That is why you write up contracts. Contracts is not just to protect you, it is the protect all parties from shit like this and so you know exactly what you're getting out of the project.
>>
>>153166867
its not that anon.
as someone who's been in plenty collabs the main reason of faliure is not due to cheating or stealing, its simply spoiled people with unrealistic expectations of themselves and others.
i thought game devs had work integrity, but it seems like they snap at every little obstacle, and pick a fight with everyone for not delivering the perfect note or piece of art.

no one is willing to pull weight but everyone wants to see the game completed
>>
>>153167171
>I'm having issues with random snapping with my sprite's rotation.

If movement input is zero it might be interpreted as facing all directions at once.

Or it could be because you're using eulerangle functions instead of quaternion functions, the latter usually are less prone to go wonky.

Without knowing your code it's hard to tell which.

>Sandler allegedly walked away with half of the studio's savings—as he was allowed to do under the terms of the contract—and demanded that all assets he created for Breeding Season be removed from it.

What type of fucking contract is he writing. He practically asked to be sabotaged writing a contract that heavily favors the artist and leaves himself to get fucked so easily.

try change
>if (movement != Vector2.zero)

into

>if (movement.magnitude > 0.001f)

The axis functions returns floats that as the type name suggests, are floating around 0, but not perfect 0. That means that checking to see if it's vector2.zero fails and it applies rotations based on the almost-zero direction facings.
>>
>>153168071
instead of comparing with Vector2.zero stop setting the rotation when falling under a minimal length:

if (movement.magnitude() > 0.001)
...

my guess is that if movement is too small Atan2 may return only 0, 45°, etc.

Really fucking annoying. Minimize clicks on repeated actions.

To get around it you could put the bed in its own room, with no other interactable objects in it. that way the player won't accidentally trigger the bed.

Or you could have to walk into the bed for half a second (keep holding down wasd) so the player doesn't misclick.

Or if you need to warn the player about unused actions or time or resources that need to be used TODAY, have a UI element show up that tells tham that, but don't require a click to close it. (so not a dialogue box)

I'm not familiar with gamemaker, but if your thing isn't getting destroyed then it means your logic is never triggering inside the condition. If it's got a print message function, stick one in there to make sure the logic is actually going through.

If it's not, start running tests on it mentally. From what I can see without thinking about it too hard, the conditional will only ever be true if image_speed is more than zero, because it will never be = to image_number and < image_number at the same time.
>>

That seems like the worst of both worlds. It forces the player to wait 3 seconds if they do want to sleep, but the automatic timer can also cause some players to sleep if they don't want to.

The other solutions I proposed don't involve a dialogue at all, but only a separation of the bed from the rest of the house, so you can only misclick if you are in the bedroom. Since the bedroom only has a bed, you shouldn't misclick.

The popup I was talking about, warning the player about unused actions, would be along the bottom or side of the screen, not a popup in the middle requiring a clickthrough. So the user can see it, read it, and go to bed if they want to ignore it.

Requiring the player to walk into the bed (hold up) for 3 seconds will also minimize misclicks without a dialogue. Make sure to have a loading bar or circle for the 3 seconds if you do that.

All those solutions were aimed at avoiding a dialogue popup. If you want a dialogue popup, just use one and don't mix it with these ideas. I'm biased towards click efficiency rather than 100% safety, though, unlike this anon >>153173145.

The art looks nice, but I would wonder what the purpose of it is and how regularly you have to sleep.

If something cool happens to the outside world while you sleep then I can understand having a lengthy animation to increase the drama.
If nothing happens and it's just another day in your adventure or survival game, then I can see it being a tedious mechanic with or without the sleep mechanic, unless you're going for some ultra realistic survival game where you can be attacked while sleeping and lack of sleep effects your performance, but there's some sort of risk-reward scenario for holding off on sleep.

I guess the point I'm getting at is why do you have a sleep mechanic that isn't camouflage for a save mechanic? Seems pretty strange.

what if it's a harvest moon-like game? I'm very concerned with the pace of the game. I'd like to slow it down as much as I can without it feeling too slow, if you know what I mean. I don't want the primary motivator for any of the mechanics to be "bad stress" as in monsters are coming to get you and you will lose or whatever. Does that make a difference?
>>
>>153175073
yeah, skippable is good. you can do skippable different ways, though. Do you want to force the player to walk to the bed, do whatever dialogue is there, then wait 5 seconds or press enter every night? Maybe you do. That kind of waiting period can be used as a lull in the gameplay loop and let the player think about what they did that day. Usually that is accomplished by a long walk, which you might already have when you return home.

Maybe you could have the player "dream" about what they did that day by scrolling relevant icons past the sleeping player. You might be able to use screencaps too, idk what engine you're on.

Bottom line is, decide if you want to be kind to the player and let them skip, or force them to think about their day
>>

Ok, thanks! This is a nice perspective. I suppose this kind of pacing is going to be best adjusted when I start getting playtesters in. Hopefully soon. Thanks again!

I know this will come across as an insane thing to say when we have things like Unity but, I still believe with all my heart ZZT is the best place to start if you're fresh to game development.

Freedom to be able to create virtually anything you want (Unity) can be overwhelming if you're beginning in game development and likewise limitations (ZZT) can be freeing and much less frustrating if you're a newb in game dev.

I just figured it out! I repeatedly shot into explosion, and it gave me random numbers which corresponded to phase of animation. And when the phase was within Image_index - 2 it disappeared.

I tried your code but I think it, too, only runs when bullet hits the explosion. So it only checks animation phase when collision occurs, not from animation loop itself.

A game structure where you have a distant goal and you run into roadblocks which requires you to take a detour. These detours take you to different areas, each of which with its own optional mini-objectives, some of which affect the ending or future mini-objectives. You cannot go back to previous zones after passing a roadblock.

I'm revamping the skiing mechanic of my skiing game to be more like actual skiing like in Zineth but I'm having trouble making it work.

The rules are:
1.Align the player to the ground so he looks up/down when on a hill.
2.Using A-D rotates the player's transform, then projects the velocity on the new forward vector to make the player steer like he's skiing.
3.While in the air, do the same as rule 2 but while keeping the downward velocity from gravity.

For some reason, the code I used for rule 1 works but only when facing south. If the player is looking north, it's gonna rotate the player in all kinds of weird ways so that it faces somewhere south while aligned to the ground's normal. The worst thing is this code works perfectly in another project. I guess it's a notation thing with Unity's rotations but I don't know where to start looking. Here's the code:

ray.origin = transform.position;
if (Physics.Raycast (ray, out hit,15, groundMask)) {
axis = Vector3.Cross(-transform.up,-hit.normal);
if(axis != Vector3.zero)
{
angle = Mathf.Atan2(axis.magnitude), Vector3.Dot(-transform.up,-hit.normal));
transform.Rotate(axis,angle);
}
transform.position=new Vector3(transform.position.x,hit.point.y+hit.normal.y*2.8f,transform.position.z);
}

>payroll
I didn't know he was the co-creator, I concede on this point.

>right to art
Even if he was a lazy sack of shit, you don't give someone full rights to the art. That is just something you just don't do. It means at any point, even after the project is done he can choose to not want to be associated with the project and disallow them to use his art.

Also just because he is lazy and the project is going nowhere, does not mean that he has permission to take funds from the patreon to support his game, even if he was the co-creator.

The funds are going specifically to breeding season. Not a game that is like breeding season from the co-creator. He should've just left and started his own patreon to get funds.

Also not allowing them to use or buy the art for breeding season is a cunt move regardless of how lazy HBomb is.

then I add this to step event:
if is_hit = true
{
if (image_index >= image_number - 1) && (image_index < image_number)
{
image_speed = 0;

}

I expect animation to stop after one loop, but it throws an error about how variable is not defined before it is read on line 1 of step. If I define it in step is_hit = false first, then it keeps looping.

So the sideways sprite is off compared to the front and back. The arms swing to and fro, her hips and breasts are shaking back and forth, and there are 4(?) frames as her feet take turns moving forward and her arms swing. Compare that to the very stationary arms and stiff torso that only alternates between two frames and you can tell a clear difference in how the two are handled. You are likely keeping this minimalist, but if your forward and backwards cycles are 4 frames so should your sideways walk?

I got tired of my level's current music so I went and made a 'new' one to replace it. Even just swapping out the instruments and adding an extra layer of harmonies or something was refreshing. It was basically 'Like New'.

Or try out a new style/copy someone else's.

There's a + and - button for each of the 6 stats. I probably could have just dynamically created/bound them all dynamically in the construct event, but well, too late now. At first I tried to make each stat its own widget, but then I had alignment problems as they're currently in a grid layout taking up 4 columns per stat. It could definitely be a lot better.

Well the unix networking book says that the port protocols are the same on all machines since they are based on the same IPv6/4 protocols.

You just need to change a part of the the id you want your program to work on machines with different file systems.

And that's involves simply modifying the socek protocol from AI_UNIX to IA_INET and now all you ports can now in to cross platforming.

Good luck mate.

Implement those parts of your work into a personal GDD and choose when you're going to work on them.
The stages you select should be thought of before doing anything as these are the most important parts in development.
Don't forget to have fun with your GDD though, implementing these stages are supposed to be exciting not a drag.

arrow keys + ctrl/shift/enter/backspace/delete lets me play a game with 1 hand on keyboard, freeing up a hand for mouse

WASD does the same thing with Q/E/Z/X/C/etc, but arrow keys are objectively superior for movement having been designed explicitly for navigation and not being touch-identical to surrounding keys

what other keys could an arrow key setup reach with 1 hand without moving your hand over? not all keyboards will have a keypad.

Here's the way I did it.

1) Download LMMS (it's free and open source)
2) Download Audacity (it's also free and open source)
3) Pick one or more instruments in LMMS and arrange the notes so that they play a sound at the same time or slightly off so that they merge into each other
4) Export it as a .wav file.
5) Open that .wav file in Audacity
6) Add 'filters' and other effects at random (I don't know what most of them do.. I just pick something, move the bars around and hope for the best)
7) If it sounds good I will export it as a .wav file again.
8) Put it in my game.
9) Done.

Basically just grab a sound or record something yourself, or use a default instrument/sound as a base, add stuff to it so that it doesn't sound the same, then call it your own and put it in your game. If you're taking someone else's sound make sure you read their copyright notices to see if you're allowed to use it.

Because today we have the technology to properly pinpoint disorders. It was ALWAYS autism or depression, but we just didn't know any better back then. But now we do.

If you think about it, a lot of society's problems originated from mental health issues. Why do people commit suicide? Because depression. Why do we have wars? Because autism.

It's like how everyone used to celebrate Columbus day because we just thought he sailed the ocean blue in 1492, but really what he did was was enslave, torture, and murder lots of innocent natives, so now we don't celebrate it anymore. We used to be ignorant. Now we are less ignorant. Tomorrow let's aim to be not ignorant.

You squished her. Do you have a limitation on the sprite size for the character, or just found it easier to do that way? You could also be following an existing game's style and using that as a guideline? If you aren't constrained to a grid system or a sprite size limitation, do yourself a favor and make the design decision now about sizes. Will all the party members be walking, or do they just need icons for when they fight? Will you have to animate that golem lifting its arms and bringing them back down for the attack? Or will he move forward like a pokemon in first gen using tackle? Is the overworld sprite going to be the same as the battle sprite?

I like the woman's design, but squishing takes away details that was a bit less charming than the stretched form. The golem looks like malphite or blitzcrank in League of Legends, or the yellow demon from mega man. I wonder if it's got a fat round body, or a flat body with the head awkwardly sticking out. Cat is good. Green elf with goggles? I could take or leave. Overall you've got the color spectrum covered nicely and they're distinct enough from one another. Experiment with sprite sizes before you do the hard work. If it turns out you have to scrap the yellow demon because you can't animate him at his current size but you finished designing the other three, you'll not be happy.
>>
>>153193938

The sprites are all 32x32 max, and they follow the leader in the overworld. Only walking sprites are needed since battles won't show them, so each character only needs 6 frames (7 if I need to draw them "laying down"). Each of them have 4 colors max because of NES limitations.
I will use the default NES palette and resolution for the game and try to keep it pixel perfect. I'll still add VNish portraits but they will be obviously low res to fit the NES limits.

Follow the style as much as you want to keep the aesthetic, but don't be afraid to cheat if you aren't working on anything with those actual limitations. You said it's meant to be silly and fun, so get design stuff done but make sure you can get the game to actually work as intended.

>Mars rover wheels

fucktarded comparison, there was a need to design specific wheels and think about them very carefully, getting them wrong or not reliable enough would mean the end of the rover

3D engines all have common features done almost the same way: hierarchical scene of nodes, rendering passes and composition, skeletal animation, ... rewriting one from scratch + eventually an editor means spending weeks rewriting code which has been written thousands of times

if you want to learn and/or work on a 3D engine, contribute to one of the existing engines (ex. Ogre3D and Ogitor for true FOSS), you won't waste hundreds of hours learning to avoid basic design mistakes and it will be a better learning experience than starting from scratch and getting nowhere. and if you truly have an idea that may improve the basic design of engines, starting from an existing codebase will save hundreds of manhours

I couldn't possibly give less of a fuck about your namefag drama. Just post progress or respond to progress.

I would much rather have rotate run the discord than vine and the rest of the steamchat though desu.

What is the best approach to textures for a game that you plan to be a commercial product? Should a developer ALWAYS get an artist for textures, or is it fine to take from and credit some of the folks and open game art (depending on the license)?

tl;dr give a programmer advice on where to or how to get textures for minimal cost or for free

Do I:
>keep working on this pretty straightforward turn-based RPG, which has most of the basics set up already
OR
>revive a moderately original RTS I started long enough ago that I'd have to start from scratch

The RPG seems like the story and characters would be more fun, but the RTS has more interesting gameplay. I usually have more fun with story stuff, though.
>>
>>153206652
if you want it to look good, you should find a custom artist

if you just want to prototype, there should be enough stuff with cc0 or cca licenses

I'm assuming it was a joke since the morph into animals meme has been done to death, usually poorly

It's cool that you're a tranny and everything, but focus on posting progress instead of attention whoring.
