more background work, it was also suggested to add some kind of better color fade to the scenery and it worked out pretty well in my opinion

CSP has much better workflow for animation.
You make a new canvas and you have a timeline and you can animate frame by frame without messing with layers like photoshop. Even has built-in exports for gif or a sequence of images.

I extracted data from the feedback people sent, using the small survey at the end of each level. Pic related, the closer the values are to 100%, the better.

(it's for my game God is a Cube, which is a puzzle game with currently 51 levels in the alpha https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3VrRv0nVz-g )

I'm gonna give a few explanations to explain why surveying tools (by asking directly people) are great to make your game better.

Checking the data from the last 6 months, it looks like people really like the levels, except for a few levels too difficult (high red spike) or too easy (low red spike). I created a "satisfaction" indicator (bottom chart) by averaging the fun, interest and right difficulty ratings for each level. The overall satisfaction is really good with an average of 87%.

As you can see, the first 21 levels have less good values, mainly due to the fact that developers find those levels boring.
But I added a panel at the start of the game asking people who already know programming to start at level 22. The next version should have better values, by letting only beginners play this part.

Why the 3 curves? It's really important to have more than one factor to judge the gamers satisfaction.
By example, Level 31 is really difficult (123% difficulty) but people find it interesting (100%) and fun (97%).
On the other hand, Level 41 is even more difficult (135% difficulty) and people find it as interesting (100%), but far less fun (80%). Typically, that's the kind of level where I will add a few runes (the solution will be partly completed) so people can more easily find the solution. It should make the difficulty easier and the fun better, while not impacting the interest rating.

On the values themselves, the interest and fun ratings were a simple boolean (fun / not fun) with average values ranging between 0% (not fun) and 100% (fun). Because it wouldn't bear sense to ask people if a level is "too much interesting" or "too much fun".
On the other hand, the difficulty rating needs to check if levels are too easy or too hard, so there are three values (0, 1 and 2) ranging between 0% (no difficulty at all) and 200% (insanely difficult).

The satisfaction is calculated by taking an average between fun (0-100%), interest (0-100%) and how far difficulty is from 100%. Which means that a 150% difficulty (too hard) will be considered as bad as a 50% difficulty (too easy).


Here is the formulae:
((100 - ABS(difficulty-100)) + interest + fun) / 3
>ABS stands for "absolute value", ABS(x) = x, ABS(-x) = x

Examples:

- difficulty 50, interest 98, fun 99
( (100 - ABS(50-100)) + 98 + 99 ) / 3
= ( (100 - ABS(-50)) + 98 + 99 ) / 3
= ( (100 - 50) + 98 + 99 ) / 3
= 82.33% satisfaction

- difficulty 125, interest 98, fun 99
( (100 - ABS(125-100)) + 98 + 99 ) / 3
= ( (100 - ABS(25)) + 98 + 99 ) / 3
= ( (100 - 25) + 98 + 99 ) / 3
= 90.66% satisfaction

In conclusion, when working on a game, rather than just asking "do you like it?", it's far much better to ask several questions, especially because you want to know what could be deceiving for your players.

This kind of survey allows you to find what is wrong in a level or a part of your game (the difficulty? the lack of fun? no interest?), while still allowing you to have a way to know if people are globally satisfied.

Note: I would like to say that putting a survey at the end of each level is an idea I took from Infinifactory (by the guy who made SpaceChem), with its author's blessing.

You can premake the map since in theory you know what every single dungeon is going to look like.

Another thing you can do which is close to what you're doing is instead of making a little green square, why not build walls? Just have different graphics associated for each tile. So if you reach a cross road, it'll blop down a 4 way wall, or if you go north into a hallway it will create 2 vertical white walls, etc..

In theory v.x should equal v.x2 when v.timer hits 1.

However in practice it actually hits v.x2 almost instantly. If I change v.timer to a constant it places the coordinates correctly.

i.e if x = 0, x2 = 100, if I set v.timer to .5 it will be 50.

So what I get is that by the time v.timer finishes updating once, the actual math of moving coordinates is firing hundreds of times. Which doesn't make sense to me.

Using Unreal Engine because I hate Java.
C++ has some issues in so far as memory management, but they can be overcome so long as you remember to use pointers/know how to manage memory properly.
Unity also has a pretty bad reputation due to all of the really low quality indy games that get made on it.
Sure the engine itself is fine and there are a lot of shit games on Unreal too, but the reputation is at least a bit better.
I also don't dislike the physics in it, though a lot of people do and it is better for more realistic games as a default.

I had a charged system like Nero's sword in DMC4 where I have my hitboxes make a reference to my player character to get the charge level and then add extra damage based on that amount, but sometimes it wouldn't actually do the correct amount of damage.
I fixed it, but that's one example of the memory management in Unreal Engine being wonky due to C++.

-Added a cape, which is still kind of wonky
-Added movement to the sword when the player moves so it doesn't look weird
-Lowered the brightness of the sun since people were complaining about it so much
-Added little black "poof" when the enemy dies
-Slightly altered sword when attacking. It moves upwards a bit before it slashes down. Small change but it makes it look quite better imo.

In general the game seems slow and floaty, and the way the sword attack just kind of nudges isn't good. Right now, nothing has weight or speed and it feels a bit like playing a Super Metroid suitless run when you get to anywhere with water.

huh. I never really looked at it to being akin to having low grav on...I guess I can speed up the animations of everything and up the gravity for the player model, along with a quick progression in speed when the player starts moving. Outside of that I'm not sure how I would make everything not seem underwater.

And yeah I'm not sure what to do with the sword attack. Since it's not attached to his arm (since he doesn't have an arm), I'm not sure how to make it not boring. I tried to make some animations where it would do some neat attacks, but the sword needs to stay close to the main character or you can just kill enemies at a distance with no danger to yourself, so it limits it to short range attacks which don't look very fancy.

From what I've seen it seems relatively stable, and most of the problems will likely be with the new features, rather than the whole editor going (not a guarantee though)

Patches come up fairly frequently but aren't necessary unless they fix a specific problem you have.

If you have a wacom, you should be able to draw by hovering the pen. Also, magnetic fields son, they're like magic, but magic that you can predict and use in practical applications.

Doing a Hyper Sonic / modern 2D Castlevania afterimage effect is confusing to me.

I copy the current location of my player to a variable every frame, easy enough, but for the effect to work I need to be constantly displaying a clone of the character based on where he was, say, 0.5 seconds ago. This is the part that is screwing with me.

Can somebody help me wrap my mind around how I'd turn "player current location" data into "where the player was X-amount of time ago"-data?

That explanation doesn't really work with the look of your character. When I think "so cybered that they don't have a dick anymore" I think something like pic related.
Your guy looks like he could be wearing power-armor and a jump suit over a completely normal body.
You've absolutely nailed the megaman look, so I'm not going to tell you to give him cyber eyes or legs that are held on by exposed hydraulics and conduit. Maybe you want to consider change his/her backstory or face a bit?

I did consider a face mask, and a poncho, and a helmet, but settled on scars. The eyes are cybernetic and do the red pupil terminator thing. Think of Killy, but whereas Killy is an android that could pass as a human, Lake is a human that could pass as an android.

If you really think you have a good idea, pay money to get a team, prototype your project. Showcase your prototype to get more money either by loan, kickstarter, patreon, or similar.

Use the additional money to fund your employees who create your game.

You're not going to find any willing to work for free especially to a person who has nothing to show for it. Your past work is your portfolio, your resume. If you have nothing you are literally asking to be employed in a CEO's position with literally a blank paper as your resume.

Work on smaller projects to get your foot in the door and more importantly understand scope. Also if you want to work on a serious project, avoid artist whose work has never been featured in a completed, no matter how shitty.

People who are not getting paid have no obligation to continue working other than passion, if half way through they get bored they will flake on you leaving you with unfinished art. Depending on their art style and the game you will not be able to find a replacement that can draw similarly enough so you'd either have to leave the clashing art style or literally trash all of it making it wasted work.

The opposite is also true for all other positions. Artists, do not work for programmers who only have an idea, they'll flake you too when their prototype isn't as fun as they imagined in the shower.

You're falling into the trap of "it needs to be unique". This is a meme, nothing more, nothing less. For an example I used with someone else, google images "flower drawing". There are all those different drawings of flowers by different people.You might even like some of those drawings, and If someone told you to draw a flower, yours wouldn't look exactly like any of them. There isn't one definitive flower drawing that is perfect and the rest are cheap knockoffs.

This is gamedev and why simple projects that have been done a gorillion times are not doomed to failure, or a waste of time. Do something simple that isn't the game of your dreams to build up your experience and who knows, someone might like it.
