I liked the riders games. Enjoyed grappling with the mechanics and getting them down. The cutscenes were really well animated and oddy enough gave us some great characterisations for the first time in a long time. And the rogues were well designed apart from generic big guy. I think Jet works really well as an antagonist and he's green which hadn't really been done in the games before which is a good offset to the sonic cast dynamic. Same with Wave, she filled a new role and did it well.

Shame we'll never really see them again, but hopefully we'll get a game with them in? I wish sega would give us a game where we could play as them with like flight mechanics or something, like knuckles gliding but better. They'd make fun playables with a new story aspect.

like imagine a knuckles vs jet race to find an emerald shard, Jet can soar through the sky, but knux can tunnel underground. Plenty of opportunity to ambush and snag pieces off each other with glancing blows and such.

Sonic games were shittier in the mid-late 90s then they were in the 2000s. Even despite 06 and Shadow, we got the Rush and Advance games, SA2 was a better game than SA1, Sonic Heroes and Riders were okay, and Unleashed and the Storybook titles were serviceable.

The late 90s were a desolate time filled with canceled games and shitty spinoffs and nothing good inbetween, the only shining standout being Sonic Adventure 1. The comics were in their darkest times as well post Mecha Madness. 1995-1999 was hell as a Sonic fan.

If I can be honest for a minute. I think the Lost World gameplay style is actually decent.
Sonic moves very springy and exaggerated but controls pretty well. Not only does he have homing attack but he can also do a kick to disable enemies and do a bounce like the Bounce bracelet from SA2. That and his air action is the best he's had in years.
The flip he does is not only floaty but it also allows him to gain height AND distance unlike the double jump from colors and the forward dash from generations. It gives you a lot of midair control.
He also gets the spindash back and it works pretty good, and while it's spammable it's a decent way to go fast and tear through enemies.
Then there's parkour. It's honestly really refreshing to be able to run up walls, run on walls and climb ledges, etc. with sonic. I'd honestly want to see this expanded on. Have stuff like kicking off walls and other mobility. It's one of the things that made mario 64 such a good game so I'm glad to see sonic using skills that allow him more mobility than "Run and jump outside of scripted moments."
Sonic's run button is also a good idea in my opinion. While I DO hate having to hold down a button the entire time, I'd say one of the biggest problems in games like adventure and heroes is that once you hit top speed you start to lose control and if you just wanna move a certain distance with out overshooting or careening off an edge, it's nice to be able to remotely control those two speeds. That said the biggest issue is that sonic takes FOREVER to go fast in this game. Even if you charge your peelout sonic starts at a crawl and builds up speed REALLY slow. Not only that but all the movement in this game is based on momentum which is really counter to how he moves because he's not only quite a bit floaty in this game but also it takes forever to get a running pace. Meaning you end up undershooting a lot of jumps.
But I wouldn't mind another sonic game refining this playstyle.

Drop Dash replaces Sonic 3's insta-shield
The drop dash is activated by pressing and holding the jump button in midair until you land, it speeds you up about as much as a spindash with no charge in Sonic 3.
Spindashing with minimal charge in this game is faster than in Sonic 2 and 3
Elemental shields return with all off their functions intact
Tails and Knuckles are playable, but we haven't seen them in action
Green Hill act 1 had a boss, but studiopolis did not
Eggman nowhere to be seen, but the one boss we have seen carries his glasses, grill, and stache
Sonic 1, 2, 3, and Knuckles are all confirmed to have a level in this game, as well as more
Green Hill is the most tame returning level choice
S3 and S&K are considered seperate games by Taxman, and will each get a level
Returning levels are there to make the settings of the genesis games feel more cohesive. Angel island all felt connected in Sonic 3 but it's easy to forget Sonic 1 and 2 took place on the same island. Presumably, Mania is also on South Island
