I've been playing the Civilization series since the original game came out on the Amiga, bought every one and played them to death until Civ 5.

Really? I heard Sid Meier was kind of a dick in spite of being able to make really good games.

Also, I'm excited for Civ6 mostly because Ed Beach is working on it, just as I was excited when I heard he was working on the Civ5 expansions. Civ4 is still my favorite game of all time, and it would take miracles for Civ6 to surpass it, but Ed Beach has also made some favorite boardgames of mine, so I generally trust what he can do.

Also I'm convinced that the whole Age of Exploration theme and Catherine de Medici for France was his idea, since both of the great board games he made were from around that era

Stopped playing it for good after that piece of shit dropped.
>>
>>151194489
Next patch will let you set rules for the game, essentially meaning you can have all the dlc installed but still 'turn off" certain features if you want
>>
>>151194489
Get CK2+ or HIP. I don't use HIP but I presume it attempts to fix the things the devs destroy, CK2+ is somewhat good with the council and they're not always retarded.
Also if you make a custom ruler, you get instant full control over council by default
The only thing that remains fucked is shattered retreat (just turn it off in defines) and automatic alliance calling and problems establishing them to begin with which is still fucked.

How do we fix Rise of Nations?

And also, Rise of Legends to Steam or GoG when?
>>
>>151204980
my friend and I bought RoN when the remastered edition or whatever was released on steam

we've been playing AoE2 pretty much since it was released, we used to play RoN and Empire Earth back in the day too.

So we played RoN together on moderate difficulty against 2 AI just to get back into the game. I still have fucking PTSD from that match, moderate difficulty my hairy ballsack.
>>
>>151204980
RoN always feels like the ages just go by way too fast. Warfare before the gunpoweder age is basically non-existant because everybodys just racing to get away from melee units.
And then there's always that one chucklefuck with a hundred nukes that triggers Armageddon for shit and giggles.
>>
>>151205412

>>151205418
>RoN always feels like the ages just go by way too fast
this was my problem with it, even tried setting the gameplay speed to slower, but it slowed every aspect of the game (I thought it'd just make techs take longer to research for some reason)
>>151205560
>I can't stand the limit cap
Yeah, needing techs to increase the pop limit was quite irritating, especially after years of playing AoE where you just build houses for pop limit

I still like the game, don't get me wrong. My friend and I still play it every other weekend, but there are definitely some balancing issues.
>>
>>151206304
I was more talking of the ressource cap. The thing is is always blinking and requires you to sink an insane amount of ressources in it to get even more ressources.

And while I do like the game too (especially all the cities-centered mechanisms), I really do prefer its sequel, Rise of Legends.
A shame it's a Microsoft game, it doesn't run on any recent PC.
>>
Yes, thank you game.
I did want to declare war and give the city state zone of control so that it could hide it's citizen in the city next turn.

>If it isn't turn based, it isn't a true 4x. RTS has "real time" in the title for fucks sake.
When the fuck did "eXplore, eXpand, eXploit, and eXterminate" eXpand itself to include "turn based"? The reason real time strategy isn't 4X has nothing to do with the fact that it's 4X but that it usually lacks true diplomacy and depth in its nation administration. By all definitions Paradox Games, if they had a random / obscured map, are 4X. Hell if you get that mod for EU4 that generates an entirely new world it'd be full-out 4X.
>>
>>151214359
Some games have total obscuration fog of war, actually. that isn't the point. The point is, if you know what the map looks like and is shaped like exactly in the game, that isnt exploration, is it?
There is zero exploration in TW, just fog of war. In EU,if you have a halfassed idea of the world map , you can figure out which way to go and find America or the East indies.
Also, all classic and definitive 4x are turn based. Did you know they are based off of old boardgames and wargames? So there's that.
>>
>>151214369
And /4xg/ was dead just not too long ago.

>did you know they are based off old boardgames and wargames?
So is Europa Universalis actually.

>if you know what the map looks like and is shaped like exactly in the game, that isn't exploration is it
Yeah it is actually. Just because you, the player, knows, doesn't mean the nation you're roleplaying as - yes, roleplaying, minmaxers are playing the wrong genre entirely - doesn't.
Also, EU4 has a random map option now.
>>
>>151215256

Irrelevant. People have stuck to the formula. It isn't impossible to make real-time 4x games. Again, imagine EU4 but with the full-world random map. Is that not completely 4X?

>Also, they sperg out if you try and discuss anything but DH and Vicky 2.
That's during American hours. I just posted a CK2 meme and we discuss CK2 and EU4 all the time in Eurohours. The only game that REALLY gets shit on is HoI4.

If you want to into that much detail: We know practically nothing about what ACTUALLY happened at Troy, beyond the fact that there was a siege, which included soldiers (possibley mercenaries) from various cities in what is modern day Greece.

The names Homer uses are at best Hellenized variants, at worst simply made up, and we quite literally have no way of knowing if he didn't just plain invent a bunch of them because he wrote the whole thing down well over 600 years after the fact.

That being said, there were a bunch of small kingdoms along the southern and eastern coast of the Black sea, and it is likely that the Greeks had legends about some of them being matriarchal. There are a bunch of paintings of women in armor on vases, along with various depitctions that fit other parts of what homer wrote.

Now, your guess is as good as mine wether Homer just wrote down a bunch of legends that everyone knew anyway, or wether he had an account of some sort of what really happened and made a story from that, or something in between.

Also, fuck you I need her as my tomboyinsh sporty waifu to complement Cleo's girly-girl attitude
and Dido's kinkyness. You know the preachy ones always like the dirty stuff.
>>
>>151217429
Well yes, I know that there's some basis to it, but then again you have to remember the Greeks and by extension the Romans generally did their utmost to just shit on everyone who wasn't them. In Greek society the stupidest thing anyone could come up with for government was to be listening to a WOMAN, so a society RUN by women was past barbaric and simply stupid.

You don't need to build them right away. In fact I'd recommend avoiding everything except a market and a colosseum when you are hard core expanding. Pop cap your capital at 5 and the rest of your cities at 3 and put all your excess production into settlers, workers, and archers to secure your expanding borders. ONLY build gold and happiness buildings.

If you are picking prime luxury spots then you shouldn't have a problem with happiness and sell excess luxuries and strategic resources to other civs to shore up your economy. When there are no more ideal locations to settle your economy and happiness should be in good enough shape to let some of your core cities grow beyond 3 pop and build more than a colosseum and a market.

If you're not memeing and asking a real question here is the answer:
I looked for this a while ago so it might be incorrect

Civ V's civ placement mechanics have it so civs can't spawn near wonders, wonders have to be at least 11 tiles away from the first settlers civs spawn with. And city states have to be at least 7 tiles away, but there isn't a code that makes city states not spawn near wonders, so that at least 7 and at least 11 tiles away rules can overlap(?) quite often

And that usually gives a reason to conquer those city states

I suppose that falls into the idea of modders doing it because they want to, and devs doing it because they are paid to

at least it looks like Civ VI's team actually care about the game
>>
>>151257010

But I'm shit at RTS because I don't want to go full autistic and calculates how many lumberjacks I should have at the end of the first age, so I can only play with people that are shittier than me.

Or in coop against the AI, but I'm the only person in the world who wants to play the RTS equivalent of PvE.
>>
>>151259790
That really isn't too far down the full autistic track. You clan always play FFAs and shit as well which makes things more even.

Quite a few people are up for compstomps. This is Civ/4Xgen, not RTS gen. Not that RTS should not be discussed here at all, but it's a community who is quite content playing against only the AI.
>>

>You clan always play FFAs and shit as well which makes things more even

>>151259790
mate I love playing against ai. its basically all I do. im not that great at games as well. I actually get stressed out when I play against actual people anymore, so thats all I do. if you ever wanted to play some aoe or any strategy game or whatever, you can add http://steamcommunity.com/id/sitarius/ if you want. though im going back to bed so I wont be able to accept any friend requests for many hours. hopefully wont wake up with too many judgmental replies
>>
>>151260072
I'm here every now and then on and off, several threads ago was probably a couple of weeks ago, it's a slow general where there might be a whole other twenty people here with the original twenty gone the next week. It's also hardly legitimate mainline RTS general or there would be more people here.

As I said, there is nothing wrong with discussing RTS here, it's close enough, no matter if whichever passing 'consensus' agrees or disagrees to the idea.

Why do you need a clan for FFA?
I assumed you were talking about AoE2, right?

AoE2, Rise of Nations, Supreme Commander, Deadlock 2, AI War, Dominions 4.
Anything that classifies as a RTS.

Either the game doesn't work online, or the guy live in Brazil and wakes up when I go to sleep.
If every game had Starcraft 2's matchmaking where you can just pick "coop quick game" and be send with anyone, it'd be great.
All online games I tried were:
>get everyone together
>pick a game
>pick a map
>pick teams
>start the game after 30 minutes

I finish most of my games in 30 minutes. And that's when I play with the AI.

I do, because they have some really fun undeads.
>zombies are slow but hit like a truck
>mummies are actually fast and hit damn hard too
>skeletons are trash but easy to spam and captains can stack
>liches are trashes because slow, friendly fire, and too expensive
>vampires are okay but a bit too fragile
>werewolves aren't really undead but holy cock-licking whore on a stick they're so fucking awesome
The only beefs I have with the undead in that game is that they use necromancers as workers, that the liches are shit, and that the banshees are bloody fucking awful.
>banshees
>screams loud enough to literally kill people
>in game, they just moan like a retard "oooooooooaaaaaaaaah" and send some white sperm bullet to the enemy's face

Otherwise, pretty solid game. The pathfinding is bad and the AI tends to rush and turtle a lot, but I sometimes like starting a game and play undead while having "Spooky Scary Skeletons" playing in the background.

Oh yeah, there are others factions too.

I'm really liking CBP Persia. It all works so well with the Authority tree for early aggression.

Also I'm really amazed at how useful the Satrap's Court is. It replaces the Courthouse, but can be built in any city, conquered or no, AND puppet cities build it automatically so you can annex them without dissidents or anything.

The garrison happiness bonus makes it easy enough to control the rate at which you approach golden ages too.

Surprisingly great really, their UA seems really shitty but if you can align your golden ages well, it means so much more.

I only wish unmodded did what CBP did and make the Satrap's Court replace the Courthouse instead of the Bank, it's not too OP and it makes more flavour/historical sense since Persia set up Satraps to not be hated and get more money from their conquered peoples.

What's the optimal strategy for Stellaris fleet composition? Should I worry too much about having things like escorts for bigger ships?

Also, is it better to have several small fleets or lump ships together into a small number of large fleets?
>>
>>151305305
You're actually unable to build ring worlds as a player. You can rarely find abandoned ring worlds and colonize them, though. I'm hoping this is something they add in a patch or DLC somewhere down the line.

Also population doesn't work like you're probably used to from other games. Each planet has set number of tiles on it, and each of those tiles can hold a single pop and building.

Stellaris is a pretty new game so, like all Paradox games, it's not perfect. It'll get better once they actually finish the game, though. :^)
>>

It is generally more efficient to make big ships, becasue they survive longer and carry more weapons per nav cap.

One big fleet is the best setup, because the AI will try to force a decisive battle and defense stations are shit without mods.

The best possible ship in the unmodded game is probably a battleship with five lances and four point defense, no shields, maximum number of crystal hitpoint armor and regenerative armor.
Add one of each aura type.

So not only is your taste given priority over that of others, we're also retarded if we disagree?

>>151307018
That's literally not how the game works. The game as it is is bad. Every habitable planet is a number of tiles. The biggest ones are 25 tiles. A ringworld is 12 (?) 25-tile pieces. That's it.
>>
>>151307274
And let's not forget that all worlds under ca. 14 tiles are functionally useless, and only slow down your research because of retarded decisions by the designers.
>>
>>151306371
Depends on where you are in the game. Remember that shields get less effective the bigger a ships healthpool is. I barely ever use them for anything that's bigger than a destroyer. Armor is generally better than shields on Cruiser and Battleships, but crystal-forged plating is far and away the best.
Early on, corvette spam is pretty much your only option. Depending on how hard your you wanna break the game your late-game fleets should be mostly battleships and cruisers with as many large weapon slots as possible. Use Tachyon lances, torpedos and the bombardment computer. Screen these ships with a bunch of corvettes and destroyers armed with shorter range weapons and the attack computers. Throw in a bunch of dedicated Cruiser/Destroyer with point defenses and bombardment computers to fuck over strike craft and the odd missle user.

Doomstacks are really the only viable option, there isn't much point to multiple smaller fleets unless you use wormholes because wormhole generation takes longer the bigger the fleet is you send through.

Scifi is often more unrealistic than fantasy, because scifi pretends it's still 'science' as it works in our world while fantasy just has to remain internally consistent for it to work out. I wasn't arguing against ringworlds, nor was I actually suggesting alternatives. I'm just saying that if they're strong enough to say 'fuck it' to physics in general then why not say fuck it to reality in general and make anime real?
Also, from a mathematical point of view there's no problem with there being higher dimensions and mind uploading isn't technically impossible assuming the brain isn't some unique structure that you can't replicate just by replicating the physical form.

I think there is a significant difference between a material with theoretically impossible tensile strength and Gandalf riding on rainbows at FTL shitting out pixie nanomachines that grant the ability to control the subluminous ether. So I'm of the opinion that it DOES matter if you throw out physics for one tiny way rather than throwing it all out.
>>
>>151313258
I disagree. One is internally consistent as a setting, the other is not.
>>
>>151315191
Ring worlds are theoretically possible, even if the materials don't exist to actually build one.

Ripping a hole in space to the anime dimension is, sadly, not a thing.
>>
>>151315363
According to what, because mathematically there's not an issue presuming that animeland actually exists as a separate 3d space.
Also, personally I think that a story which is honest enough to come out and tell you that "it's magic fuck off" is better than one that pretends to know science. Hell Stellaris has zero-point energy as a viable source.

Internal consistency is king in stories. If they manage to actually follow science then sure it's good, but more often then not it's "quantum flux" / "relativistic cannon" / "hyperlane".
>>
>>151316913
To be clear, I'm not arguing for Stelaris. I'm haven't even played it. Also one or two of the posts you responded to was some other anon. I'm saying your equivocation of all non hard science fiction isn't justified. Changing one aspect of physics and then building on the effects that change has is better than modifying the phase variance every episode.
>>
>>151317689
No, that's fine as long as it's internally consistent. The problem is that I've rarely seen it BE internally consistent.
Also this whole debacle started with someone thinking my joking "I wish they spent more time on animeland" was a serious critique or ringworlds or something
>>
>>151317909
Well then I belive we agree and were simply introduced to ring worlds in different ways.

Have you read Larry Niven's Ringworld? He breaks physics in a lot of ways but he is consistent with those changes. For example, some MIT students went to a science fiction convention and were chanting "RING WORLD ISN'T STABLE" and presented Niven with proof that the ring world as he described it in his book would collide with its star. Niven never planned on doing a sequel but he did one anyway called Ringworld Engineers to fix the problem.

The stories themselves aren't stellar but if you like science fiction that shows the author but a lot of thought into the concepts then you'll enjoy them. I especially like how he handles the psychology of different species.

Something Stellaris lacks.
>>
>>151311020
>internal consistency
Is there a bigger killer of immersion in a book/game/film?
>>
>>151319140
A lot of science fiction lacks it. They all act like humans act more or less. But Niven approaches how different species with radically different minds would approach things on all scales. For example, you might think that a species of herbivores who go catatonic when faced with danger and keeps 99.9% of them too fearful to leave their homeworld would be relatively harmless, but they proactively seek out and neutralize threats like no other. And despite being immensely more powerful than their neighbors they always neutralize threats through indirect means.

Happiness is complicated in CBP. Hover over your happiness icon. It should show you the source of your unhappiness. Let me list a few.

Poverty is caused by a city not producing enough gold.
Crime is caused by a city not having enough defense.
Boredom is caused by a city not having enough culture.
>>
This sci-fi discussion is super gay.
>>
>>151332872

>tfw this picture is the only reason I come in the thread

>>151335154
>And gold is hard to come by earl
Yeah. In vanilla every luxury and their mum produces gold. But CBP diversifies yields such that gold is less common. Sometimes you can end up in a region with very little gold relative to vanilla such that you actually feel the pinch. In those cases you really have to make use of villages (they replace the trading post). Villages get additional yield when they are placed on a road that connects cities to your capital as well as when a trade route passes over them.

For boredom prioritize getting the various guilds. You can have 3 of each for a total of 9. That's 18 culture specialists total.
>>
>>151336143

Also at some point there is a tech that boosts production to mines by one hammer if they have access to fresh water, which is a weird thing that no one would expect unless they read it themselves.
>>
I'm psyched for the Civ6 map that has multiple continents that are still connected by land bridges. It will make the American and English bonuses on their own or other continents respectively more interesting.
>>
So should I focus on building Research Stations early on in Stellaris? Is it worth it? Or should I just focus on Mining Stations and build Research Stations once I have a bigger energy surplus?
>>
>>151339269
In the early game your main concern is minerals.
In the midgame your main concern is energy.
In the lategame your main concern is influence.
Your main concern is never research; because it's an RNG you can never make it a lynchpin of strategy anyway. So only build research when you're already running a massive surplus of the other three.
>>
>>151337653
>tech that boosts production to mines by one hammer if they have access to fresh water
ok that's really good didnt know that. Have three hills with two hammers each next to a river. That tech will help. Knew about the extra food for every 2 adjacent farms. You'd have to be pretty lucky to have 3 decent farms tiles in a triangle, or maybe I've just been unlucky.

Can scouts be garrisoned? Does garrisoning units reduce crime? Crime doesn't seem to go down when I move military units onto a city.

>Can scouts be garrisoned? Does garrisoning units reduce crime? Crime doesn't seem to go down when I move military units onto a city.
Yes and yes. Your happiness only ticks in whole numbers. You can't have half a happiness unit. So unless you putting a unit on a city causes it to tick to another happiness level you won't see the reduction in crime. Also you sometimes have to open up the city for your happiness to visually update.

I don't know if unit strength matters or if there is a way to see which cities have the most crime.
>>
>>151342786
>Also you sometimes have to open up the city for your happiness to visually update.
Ah that could have been it. Seems to have gone down 1 now. Have to manage cities quite differently from each other now depending on their needs. Which is good I guess, more realistic, just slows the game down and quite different from vanilla.

I just checked and there is an economic overview screen when you click on your happiness icon. There is a city breakdown of each city's unhappiness source. This is going to be very helpful. Unhappiness has been killing me lately. It's been a mix of religious division as I spread my religion, going to war with Assyria and a revolution in Tyre cutting off 6 city connections.

The governments. All advanced types have an inherent bonus just for being the active government and a variety of slots for policy cards. Legacy bonuses are accrued through remaining in a particular government for lengths of time, and carry over to whatever government you switch to later.

Policy card slot types: Military (combat related), Economic (non-combat related), Diplomatic (city-states), and Wildcard (has its own but can slot any of the others)

The first time you switch to a specific government, it's a free swap. If you leave a government and later switch back to it, you have a period of Anarchy.

You know what, Fascism is a stupid form too, Democracy actually outlines specifically how the government would work, Fascism is a vague bubble that even the dictionary has trouble defining and Communism is an ideology, not a government. You could theoretically have a communist democracy or a communist dictatorship as easily as a communist oligarchy or republic.

This is not the sort of behaviour that inclines other civs to like you.

This is doubly the case if you literally wipe someone off the map.

Ugh. I finally got out of that happiness slump but I think it is too late. I'm over 10 techs behind multiple civs. Assyria wasted dozens of units and rarely killed any of my pikeman, but now they have ranged musketman and they are using them to full effect to focus fire my Tercios. I've lost more units fighting for Dur-Sharrukin than I lost fighting for Halab, Jinjan, Istakhr, Carchemish, Kaneshi, Imgur-Enlil, and Shubat-Enlil combined. Thosere thighly promoted units I lost too. Chairman Ashurbanipal refuses to talk about peace now Assyria has GATLING GUNS!

It's weird. Happiness doesn't suddenly annihilate your yields like it does in vanilla as soon as you become negative and it doesn't bring your entire empire crumbling down at absurd levels of unhappiness, but if you don't geet it back up quick those bad events can start dragging you down.

I averaged like 30 unhappiness for dozens of turns and even got up to 50 for a time and I got an event that shut down every last aspect of every last city for 5 turns and spawned a barb unit next to every single one of my cities. All I could do was wait as they pillaged my tiles and then meandered next to my cities where they suicided and took my science, food, culture, and gold with them.

Presents well, has some really good polish in some areas for Paradox games(multiplayer is actually functional). It lacks immersion, depth and gameplay. Not much happens for large blocks of time. When things do happen they're not very interesting. Everything is very similar to everything else, even your polar opposite defined ethos don't change very much.

It's hard to see how much DLC and mods can actually fix until you're playing them.

>>
>>151364708
It seems very much like the framework for a game; just not much actual content in it.

In most Paradox games there's no victory conditions, so the fact that Stellaris doesn't have scientific, diplomatic, or economic "victories" isn't so bad; but the problem is there's not really any way to accomplish ANYTHING by diplomatic, economic, or scientific means. The only way to advance is relentless war, which means everyone is obliged to play the same way in every game.

In most Paradox games you have to pay as much, if not more, attention to your domestic enemies as your foreign enemies: civil wars and uprisings are often your greatest threat. In Stellaris there's almost no domestic threats; you might get a slave revolt every 100 years if you go hard communism, but they're trivial to suppress. Which, as >>151364879 says, means there's just nothing happening for long periods of time and no chance of you losing your lead if you start snowballing to victory.

The features that are in the game seem shallow and underdifferentiated. Leaders have personal traits, but they make almost no difference and don't alter your strategy in the slightest. Different species have different traits, but they make almost no difference and don't change your strategy in the slightest. Techs pop up randomly, so you can't research tactically and they won't changeyour strategy in the slightest.

It's a playable game, but just kinda boring. On the plus side, Paradox has a good track record of improving flat releases with free updates over time, so I am hopeful that it may one day become a good game. But at present I really have to force myself to play it and would not reccomend a buy.

UA-after a declaration of war, all military units fight at double strength and have +2 movement for 10 turns or until you capture a city. if multiple declarations of war occur within the 10 turns, the bonus is refreshed but not extended
UB-warrior's guild-replaces armory, 200 production cost, 2g maintenance;+20%xp for units trained in that city, and any unit garrisoned in that city will contribute 1/4th of its combat strength to local happiness
UU-mercenary band-replaces longswordsman, 25 combat strength, 3 movement; gain gold when attacking cities and increased gold and healing from razing improvements
>>
>>151376183
Generally ethos conversion isn't even really worth it. There's no such thing as rebellions other than slave ones, and the yield detriment from ruling over wrong ethoses is barely anything.

So with the caveat made that your problem is not a very important one, the answer is collectivist, purely because they get the Frontier Commisars tech which gives -20% ethos divergance galaxy-wide.

I thought the UI and mechanics were poorly explained and the lack of a faction identity with armies (as well as the combat) was lacking.

I dont like how these devs continuously homogenise factions by putting in a bunch of 'mercenary' races that you have to take. I want a fucking pure faction and I want that pure faction to be viable.

This is why Stellaris is so great and their new endless space game will likely flop in competition.

I've mentioned it before, but I just don't like the way the game feels. It's too slow. You accomplish so little per turn that there's no sense of scale. By the end of the game, your cities and armies aren't that big. You haven't built much. It doesn't feel like an accomplishment. It doesn't feel like you have an empire.

Turning up the game length doesn't fix this, since it increases build times as well as the number of turns, so you literally just accomplish the same shit, but it takes longer.

I felt this was part of the problem with Beyond Earth, too. Cultural expansion into tiles and the production of tile improvements are both so slow that by the end of the game - when you're supposed to be technomaster of the world - your territory is still a scrappy patchwork of underdeveloped wilderness. Games don't take very long in real time either, compared to Civ V. As you say, it doesn't feel like you're an empire.

I can't pin down quite how Civ did it right and both those games did it wrong, though. Maybe it's just literally that everything takes so long to build. You never really hit your stride; you just struggle from one turn to the next.

For all it's flaws, this is one of the things I REALLY love about Stellaris.

By mid-game, and especially into the end-game, you have HUGE fleets with hundreds of systems under your control, producing and consuming absurd amounts of raw materials. You feel like a badass sci-fi super-race, and it's amazing.

You're full-bore, 1000-fleet, infinite resources, and five-deep-into-the-repeating-techs when you've still got only like 15% of the galaxy, and then there's nothing else to do for the rest of the game except rolling DoWs with everyone on your borders in sequence

No, I agree. As it stands, wars are just brawn vs brawn. There's several reasons for this.

First is that the AI likes to death-ball. Splitting up your fleet is pointless, because then they'll just take out each of your smaller fleets with ease.

The AI can get away with this because there's really no down-side to it. There's never really a reason to separate fleets in the first place. There's no time where it's super important for you to attack more than one place (or defend more than one place) simultaneously. Attacking planets may give you war score, but it doesn't really have much strategic benefit beyond that. Planets are mostly replaceable, and that's lame. And of course there's no kind of supply chain or physical trade, so there's no way to strategically cripple the enemy. The optimal strategy to win a war is to just cruise around with all your ships, beat the enemy's fleet with your bigger fleet, and then nuke a few planets until they surrender.

Part of the problem is that player has *too much* freedom, as weird as that sounds. You're always free to take the optimal choice, as is the AI. Of course, when you have the option to take the optimal choice, there's really no choice to be made at all.

Restricting tech trees would do a lot to help with this. That way, you could see more interesting weapon match ups, but that alone wouldn't be enough. Honestly the game just needs far more resource management. Possibly more infrastructure related to resource management on/around planets. That way, gunning for an enemy's planet would be a useful strategic choice. Espionage would also be cool. Being able to contact a dissenting faction within the enemy's empire and saying "hey, I'll support your independence or make you a protectorate if you rebel right now, and bring some planets with you" would be excellent.

Hopefully the address some of this in a future DLC.

This is why hyperlane only pvp is the best, there are actual areas of importance and a random system might because beyond important since it's the only major crossroads, it also makes the allow movement treaty a far more strategic choice since you can't just wormhole across and an entire empire.
>>

Actually, I find wormholes to be more interesting. Since they take so long to wind up with larger fleets, splitting fleets actually becomes a somewhat viable strategic choice.

I meant "resource management" literally in the sense of strategic resources, yes, although I see now you were more talking about them in the abstract sense that as a player you should actually decide what your economy is geared up to do, as opposed to just being a big bucket that fills up with red and yellow mana.

I can't remember what the dev notes said and I can't check 'cos b&, but the general impression I got was that they want to make strategic resources super-duper "You definately want to make your grand strategic planning be about securing some" important. Even if the implementation is shit, I at least approve of the premise.
>>
>>151390598
>as opposed to just being a big bucket that fills up with red and yellow mana.
Basically this, yeah. There's no strategic choices to be made with that system. At best, you can take out a few mining stations and then oooh noooooo I've lost like 5 whole minerals per day! A well-placed and well-timed attack should be able to deal significant, if not temporary, damage to the enemy.

>and I can't check 'cos b&
lol

>they want to make strategic resources super-duper "You definately want to make your grand strategic planning be about securing some" important. Even if the implementation is shit, I at least approve of the premise.
Yeah. In the last dev diary, the talked about how they want to separate strategic resources into global and planet-specific resources. E.g., terraforming gases would be global, and bentharian stone would be local. The bentharian would be used only on the specific planet where it was found. This isn't a *wholly* awful idea. But, they also said they want to make it so you only need 1 of a resource to get it's effects. This is the opposite of strategic. If I only need 1, I can just mine lots and then not give a fuck if the enemy destroys one of my mining stations.

So now you have no ability centralise all your Betharian planets on one core world with the "Hazardous Weather +20% energy" modifier, that you use as your powerhouse, to maximise benefit from the Overcharge Capacity edict?

Did no-one tell them that this is the OPPOSITE of making things more strategic?

Although ti could work if the the local bonuses are (a) more rare,. and (b) like, ridiculous. Betharian stone, +100 energy on that tile, something like that. A couple Stellaris questions, first does the map size or type really matter at all? I know if you play on a galaxy with arms and you use warp travel you can't get to any of the other arms until you upgrade your warp drives but is that it?

They really need to unfuck the combat.

Why are there no formations?
Why can't I set ships to behave as 'escort', 'flanker', 'long range support', 'frontline' etc., and have fleet formations that places ships of specific roles in specific positions?

The game has the mechiancs in place to do this. They are just not using those mechanics.
There are a bunch of different ship AI behaviours that all result in the two wedge-shaped fleets blobbing up while shooting each other.

And the strategic resources would be the perfect place to have some logistics, freighters moving the specail ores o your shipyards, tankers moving the fuel, etc.
Instead we get fucking nothing and they want to reduce that to be even less meaningful?
Good job, paraducks.

>first does the map size or type really matter at all?
It's purely a question of how long you want the game to last. Hueg map = takes you longer to get to 40% of colonised worlds and "win". No other major differences

> Also what's the weapon/armor set up?
Start with missiles.
Research space torpedos as soon as you get the opportunity
Run torpedos in every weapons slot on every ship until you get particle lances, at which point switch to lances + torpedos.
For defence, just run a 1:1 mix of shields and armour. Maybe put one point defence gun on there when you get to cruisers and battleships

> ai always has longer range weapons than me and theirs do more damage
There is a rock-paper-scissors thing that goes on in that shields beat lasers, armour bears kinetic weapons, and point defence beats missiles. But the AI never builds point defence (which is why you run missiles, see above). If you're being outclassed it might just be because by chance the person you're fighting has the correct combination to beat you. Follow the instructions above and you should be fine.
>>
>>151395072
No, what I mean is that we can just, like, take normal units, but turn them into ships instead.
>catapults
>just make slow but fragile ships that shoot one giant torpedo with a AoE but have almost no defense, being literally a giant floating canon

>calvary
>makes light-armored ships with short-ranged weapons

>elite cavalry
>beefier ships that boards other ships, causing them to panic and/or be captured

>infantry
>your usual corvette

>heroes/commanders
>mothership/flagship

>medic
>repair/salvager ships

It's not that hard, in fact. Just pick normal battles and put them in space.

I'd strategic it up with "terrain".

If your ships are in the asteroid belt when battle starts, they get an evasion and defense buff.
If they're real close to a habitable planet, they get, I dunno, some sort of aerobraking maneuverability buff
Gas giant? Charge up weapons from the magnetosphere, firing rate buff.
Actual inhabited world with pops? "Fighting for their families" morale buff.
World with a highly developed station? "Local battlenet", general offense and defense buff depending on station's modules.

Of course the problem with all this is that if it's still deathball + deathball combat, it's all still going to come down to who has the bigger deathball, unless the buffs are huge +50% region ones.

Now that they've changed it so you can negotiate alliances-of-convenience for just one war's duration, no.
If it's early game and you want to take down a neighbor, bringing in a third party for the duration of the fight can be exceptionally useful. But formal alliances cost influence and massively interfere with your freedom of action; they're nowhere near worth it.

EUIV at least has the advantage that in a big lategame war you will undoubtedly be obliged to fight on multiple continents at once, and supply limits prohibit you from just rolling around with one giant stack.
But I accept that supply limit just obliges you to split your one deathball into 10 pieces and walk around with it like that, until such time as the enemy joins battle at which point everyone piles back into the deathball like a fucking 16th century Megatron. It's not 'organic' anti-deathballing, by any means.

Actually, I think what might work is debuffs for larger fleets, with that debuff being lessened based on the skill of your Admiral. I mean you have to be really lacking in self esteem to change "Disagreee" to fucking "Respectfully disagree"

I really don't understand this, it just seems fake to me. I laugh everytime I see "respectfully disagree"

In England we used to call each other all kinds of shit and have tons of bantz until the anti-fun police came along to ruin everything
>>
>>151414026
In France we used to call each other faggot and all its variants (sodomite, pédé, enculé, enfoiré, taré).
Now the LGBT police made everything illegal.

I agree, and I won't let them live this down.
Just like the other dude who said "nigga please, I know what I'm doing" when told his city placement was shit.

Earth operates because photosynthetic plants conveert sunlight into chemical energy. Virtually all non-photosynthetic life on Earth operates by burning those chemicals, fungus included. Where is the chemical energy that the fungus on fungal planets consumes coming from if not from sunlight?
